Desk

A desk at SCI-Arc is more than a desk . . . It’s a sacred space where creations are made and brought to life. A desk here has many usages such as a dinner table, work space, storage, model making space, area for critic, and a place for fellow students to gather together. It’s more than a desk . . .

Dedicated to the long nights, maxicure manicures, frantic submissions, and the friends who are there every step of the way. . .

“My desk has not been the very best hideaway. Since I face directly the corridor, I would usually have eye contact with everyone one passing by. Just at the left side of my table, through the entrance to the studio I could stare directly to the street. This window made my place rather bright throughout the morning. I had my back towards the studio so that everyone would always see what I am doing. I probably would not call it especially cozy, but it was definitely really lively and what kept me awake and social.” _ Martin

“I love working next to the windows and seeing all the dogs nearby. I feel more connected to the area around school and am still able to have a quiet area to work without distractions.” _ Ian
“I love sitting in the back of the space because it’s a great place to focus, and a nice little place for friends to gather within the studio. I also liked syncing my PC colors with Ian’s so our desks look cohesive.” _ Ben

“I took a piece of my friends model in my class and I have got displayed on my desk and it sort of creates a sculpture and I love it and then I found a moai statue on the floor and I attached a ballon of the same color to create a totem like the ones of our model.” _ Emmanuel

“I think the thing I love about my desk the most is that it was at the entrance of the thesis pit so I could wave hi to everyone in the hallway and my friends would come visit me all the time.” _ Miho

“The thing I loved most about my desk was it being in the corner of the studio. It was the best spot to get some work done on busy days.” _ Jack

“The thing I love most about my desk is the wall behind me to which i can paste all sorts of things.” _ Caroline

“The best thing about my desk was it being right next to the window so I always had a nice view while working.” _ Tara

“The thing I love the most about my desk are the checklists that Tara and never checked.” _ Emma

“What I love most about my desk are all the scratches, sketches, notes, and modifications made over the semester. Just looking at all of the marks and objects lying around you can see how raw and vulnerable the space is and develop a pretty strong understanding of who I am.” _ Alex

“The thing I love the most about my desk is that it’s right next to a pony wall dividing the hallway and the studio so as people walk down the hallway they stop to say hello or see what I’m working on.” _ Sophia

“My desk at SCI-Arc is my bedroom. I have a little workshop where I get to be productive and creative, sometimes my friends come over and give feedback on what they think of what I’m doing and sometimes I’m sleeping for a few minutes to get back to work fresh. Being an artist takes a lot of unknown processes to discover and imagine the future of architecture and environment possible around human being. To reflect how we think and perceive the world and how we respond to that.” _ Shayar

“What I love about my desk is how at every stage of production it looks entirely different, if there’s a sewing machine on the table or under it- the buildup of residual superglue, things stuck to my cutting mat, or yarn strewn about the floor underneath. As the semester goes on it constantly changes but gets increasingly chaotic which is usually my favorite part to look back on once the project concludes and it’s time to tidy it up again.” _ Nihan

“The thing I love the best about my desk space this semester is the fact that I get 2 of them! Finally having enough space to store all the things I’ve accumulated over the years AND still having enough left over space to lay out my yoga mat and relax … the best thing imaginable! Also, I like to collect little trinkets and display them on my desk so it looks cute. So for example, I have little sonny angels to keep me company on long nights.” _ Olivia
