Having30activelocalsthroughoutIndonesia,CIMSAisaffiliatedwiththe InternationalFederationofMedicalStudents'Associations(IFMSA),themost prominentstudentorganizationintheworldwithrecognitionfromtheUnited Nations.Withthemissiontoempowermedicalstudentstoactivelylearnandcreate, planstrategies,andexecutemovementstoimprovethenation'shealthandwellbeing,CIMSAcontinuesitsstruggletocreateahealthier,moresecure,andmore prosperousIndonesiawithequalopportunitiesineducationandhealth,andalsoto improvelivesandreachprosperityandsocialjustice.

StandingCommitteeonProfessionalExchange(SCOPE) is oneofthesix(6)standingcommitteesoftheCenterfor IndonesianMedicalStudents'Activities(CIMSA)thatengagesin thefieldofprofessionalexchangeandhas17localsspreadin variousfacultiesofmedicinethroughoutIndonesia.Twonational officersleadSCOPECIMSA;NationalExchangeOfficerfor Incoming(NEO-In)andNationalExchangeOfficerforOutgoing (NEO-Out),aswellasmaintainednationallybytheNational ExchangeCommittee.

SCOPEisastandingcommitteefocusingon incominghostingandoutgoing sending,exchangepromotions,globalhealthawareness,andcultural understanding. SCOPECIMSAisaffiliatedwithIFMSAanddevelopsgood cooperationwithvariousstakeholdersandrelevantexternalpartiestofacilitate studentexchange.SCOPECIMSAalsoorganizesvariousprojectsasaformof characterdevelopmentforthemembersofSCOPEitselfandconductsjointactivities withinCIMSAtoimprovethenation'shealth.

Medicaleducationisbecoming highlyadvancedandequally challenging.Afirmgraspoftheoretical knowledgeanditsproper implementationinmedicalpracticeis necessarytoexcelhere.Student exchangeopportunitiesoverseas enablestudentstobroadentheir perspectivesandbenefitfromrich interculturallearning. Thestudent exchangeprogramwascreatedto providemedicalstudentswithglobal exchangeopportunities,awareness ofglobalhealthissues,andan opportunitytoexchangeideasand networkwithstudentsworldwide.

Manystudieshaveestablishedthe meritsandhavemade recommendationsforsuchprograms. Attheendoftheprogram, most participantsnotedthattheexposure notonlyimprovedtheirclinical diagnosticandcommunicationskills butalsochangedworldviews, increasedculturalsensitivity, enhancedcommunity,social,and publichealthawareness,and appropriateresourceutilization. They alsoexperiencedashiftincareer choices,reducedtheirdependenceon laboratoryandotherprocedures,and improvedtheirunderstandingofthe opportunitiesandchallengesof workinginareaswithdifferent resources.

Interestinincorporatingglobal healthissuesinmedicaleducationhas beengrowingoverthepastdecades, reflectingtheincreasingroleofcultural competenciesandglobalizationin medicine.Muchofthisisdrivenby medicalstudents,whoexpect longitudinalandhigh-qualityglobal healthteaching.Asareaction,more andmoremedicalschoolsinEurope nowincludeglobalhealthintheir curricula.Whilesuchelectivesareoften veryvaluable,theyprovidesignificant challenges.Manyelectiveprograms havebeencriticizedforlackofethical standards,oftenpromptingstudentsto performproceduresanddelivercarefor whichtheyneedtobeappropriately trained.

TheInternationalFederationof MedicalStudentsAssociations(IFMSA) andCenterforIndonesianMedical Students'Activities(CIMSA)runthe

clinicalrotationdoneabroad.Besides academicsupport,theIFMSA professionalexchangeprogramalso seeksfinancial,educational,orlogistics assistancetoincreaseitsaccessibility andreachtomoremedicalstudents.

Thefactthat,sinceitsfoundation,it hasturnedintothemostextensive student-runexchangeprogramacross theworld,sendingmorethan13000 studentsannuallyinanexchange, demonstratestheincreasedinterestof medicalstudentsinlearningabout differenthealthsystemsandtheirwish tobecomemoreawareofthehealth needsofvariouspopulationsand communities.

IFMSAGeneralAssembliesare amongthemostsignificantyouth-led eventsaroundtheworld.TheGAis heldtwiceayear,onceinMarchand onceinAugust. Thisyear,from1st-7th March2023,theMarchMeetingare heldasafullyphysicaleventinTallinn, Estonia.OurtwoNEOshadachanceto attendtheGA.Thesessionsinthe MarchMeetingincludethestanding committeesessions,theregional sessions,theplenarysessions,training, themainthemeevents,andthesocial programs.Thisquickflashbackwillgive youaquickpeekintothosesessions.

TheGAisfirststartedwithPlenary SimulationandPlenarySession.The nextsessionistheopeningceremony whichisthefirstsocialprogram.The standingcommitteesessionsareheld thenextday.TheSCOPESessions Teamhasprepareditadequately,and wediscussedmanyissuesinthese sessionsthatarerelevanttowhatwe facedailyasexchangeorganizers.The SCsessionstartedwithspeeddating gameswhicharealotoffun.Next,we gotachancetodiscusstechnicalissues suchasSCOPE,IFMSA,andthe exchangedatabase.Wealsohavea SmallWorkingGroups(SWG)sessions.

Besidesthediscussionandtraining, thereisalsotheexchangesfairwhichis superfun. ExchangesFairisthe exhibitionwherethehardworkand thegloryoftheNMOsarereflected. TheNMOcanpromoteitsexchange

programandraisethestandardsto thehighestlevelsintermsof AcademicQualityandSocial Program. Itisthemostcelebratoryand festiveeventofexchanges.Itis guaranteedtobetheunforgettable highlightoftheMarchMeetingfor SCOPEmembers!

Thisyearwehad1regionalsessions inTheGA.Thefirstregionalsessionwas heldontheseconddayofthemeeting. OurRegionalDirector,ShiSienWoon, introducedustotheAsia-Pacific InternationalTeam.Thesessionmostly consistsofadoptingtheAsia-Pacific RegionalTeam'sreportanddiscussing changesintheAsia-PacificRegion's Regulations.Thesessionsendedwith ustakinggrouppictures.

IFMSAMarchMeetingwassuchan incredibleexperienceforSCOPE memberstoattend.The7most delightfuldaysarefullofus advocatingforpressingglobalissues, gettinginvolvedinthedecisionmakingprocess,training opportunitiesforself-skills development,havinglotsoffunand entertainment,assembling friendshipsthatwilllastfora lifetime,anddiscoveringawhole newworldthatisthrilledtohave usinit!

WhenIarrivedinIndonesia,the contactpersonwasveryhelpfuland gaveusallthenecessaryinformation. Also,shepickedmeupfromthetrain stationwhenIarrivedinmalang.

Theboardinghousewasfine,andit hadmanyfacilitiessuchasakitchen, freewifi,aniceplacetoeat,andthe roomwasnice.

Theboardinghouseisabout3.5km fromthehospital,cleanandsafe. Thehealthsystemissimilartothe Egyptianone.

Themedicaleducationsystemin Indonesiaisamazingandvery organized. WhatIlovedthemost aboutIndonesiaisthatthereis mushollaeverywhere,whichhelpedme toprayintime. IlovedmyIndonesian experienceverymuch,andIlearned alot.Ilovedtheverywelcoming people.Theyhelpedusallthetime.I lovedthenatureandthelandscapes here.

Myexchangestoryhasnotbeenless thanarollercoaster.Astoryseasoned withplentyofuncertaintyand challenges,fromdealingwithvisa rejectiontoattendingonlineclasses from2AMbecauseofthe5hourstime differencebetweenFranceand WesternIndonesia. Still,fromthis exchange,Ilearnedthatit'salways exhilaratingwhenyougatherjust enoughcouragetogothroughwith it.Seekingdiscomfortisabout steppingoutsideourcomfortzoneto accomplishincrediblethingswe wouldhaveotherwisechosennotto do.

IarrivedinParisafter24hoursof flightandtransitinDubai.Itookthe traintomynewhome,ClermontFerrand,a10-minutewalkfromGarede ParisBercytoGaredeLyon.WhenI arrived,Imetakindwomanwhospoke EnglishandtoldmeIhad6minutesto gettherebeforeImissedmytrain. Thankfully,Iarrivedoneminutebefore mytrainleftandgotinthecoach exactlybeforeitwent.WhenIarrivedin Clermont-Ferrand,itwasquitethe contrastfromParis,withParisbeingbig, bustling,andpackedwithtourists.At thesametime,Clermontisavery sereneandquietsmallcity.Itcouldbe moretouristylikeParisandaperfectly goodcitytolivein.

IwasstationedinEstaingHospital, theobstetrics&pediatricsdepartment oftheCentreHospitalierUniversitaire deClermont-Ferrand(CHUClermont Ferrand).Ididrotationsinallthree levelsofthecareunitintheir department,learningphysical examinations,growthcharts,ECGs,and clinicalknowledge.Ilearned neonatologyfrommyuniversitycourse, butapplyingittoreal-lifecasesgave themaclearerunderstanding.Mario andIspenttimeinClermont-Ferrand, challengingourselvesandsharingour Indonesianculture.Weprepared IndomieGorengfortheincomingsand Clermontmedicalstudentsatthe NationalFoodandDrinkParty(NFDP). Wealsolearnedmanydifferentcultures fromtheClermontoisandfellow exchangestudentsfromalloverthe world.Storiesofstrugglesduringthe internshipandfunontheweekends bondedus.

I'mforevergratefulfor participatinginthisexchangeand learningandgrowingfromit.This exchangehasn'tjustimprovedmy medicalknowledgeandskilland mademegrowintoabetterhuman being. Everycultureandtraditionis beautifulinitsownuniquewaywhen wechoosetoexperienceitwithan openmind.Isawandsharedhow friendshipscanstillbemadedespite languagebarriers.Thebottomline, differencesarenothingtobeafraid of. SCOREandSCOPECIMSA-BEMKM FKUnandheldseveraltalkshowsand trainingtopromotetheIFMSA exchangeprogram.Thefirstdaywas kickedoffbytraining“Exchange101” givenbyeachstandingcommittee representativethatmanagesthe outgoingselection,ArianaSafitriPutri asNEO-OutandFitriAnnisaHerdianas NOREAssistantforOutgoingCIMSA Indonesia.Thetrainingwasfullof informationthatparticipantsoftenask regardingtheSCOREandSCOPE exchangeprograms.Afterthat,wehad dr.GilangDwiPutra,aformerexchange studentforSCOREandSCOPE, share hisexperienceandtipsforbeinga prospectiveexchangestudent.He mentionedseveralkeypointsto increaseourprobabilityofbeing chosenasthemedicalexchange studentfromIndonesia. Thefirstday wasclosedwithacountriesexpowhere webrieflyexplainedexchange conditionsin6countries,followedbya sharingsessionfrom4former outgoingsfromFrance,Turkey,Poland, andHungaryas2formeroutgoings fromJapanandSlovakiawere, unfortunately,unabletoattendour event.

DaytwostartedwithtwoIndonesian medicalstudentsinNewcastle,United Kingdom,sharingtheiracademic journeyandtheirstruggletoovercome theculturalshock.Astheycurrently researchmaster’sdegrees,theyhave quiteacomprehensivepointofviewon bothIndonesianandUKeducation

systemsrelatedtomedicineand research. ThenextsessionwasMiss Hasrigivingfreelecturesasthe representativeofLBLIAPadang.We hadfunansweringherquestion aboutoneofourworstnightmares, whichisgrammar.Shewasso generous; herpracticaltipsprepared ustotakeTOEFL. Thisyear’sexchange fairwasclosedwithupdatesfromNEOInandNOREofPortugal,andNOREof Slovakiaaswehadfuntalkingwith themandlisteningtotheircountries’ joyousexchangeexperiences.

Theeventwentgreat,withminorto noproblemsencountered. Wehope thisactivitymayimpactmedical studentsatWestSumatratobecome curiousandinvolvedintheIFMSA exchangeprogramasoutgoing students.

EXPRESSION

ExchangeFairSCOPEandSCOREInThisSeason

ExchangeFairEXPRESSION (ExchangeFairSCOPEandSCOREIn ThisSeason)isanactivitycollaboration fromSCOPEandSCORECIMSAFK UNS.Itwasheldfrom16thApril2022 until29thApril2023.EF: EXPRESSION'spurposeistopromote medicalstudentexchangeinresearch exchangeorprofessionalexchangeso thatitcanallowallthemedicalstudents inIndonesiatoparticipateinthis exchangeprogram.

Thisactivity'sgoalwastoincrease theknowledgeofatleast30 participantsaboutresearchexchange andprofessionalexchangetoabout 20%in2daysfromtheresultofthe pretestandposttestafterthe activitywasover. Thisseriesofevents beginswithpre-activitytraining.We uploadedbingooneachofour Instagramstories;inthebingo,wecan expressourdesiretogotowhat countryisourdestinationforstudent exchange.Thenfromthe16thofApril tothe29thofApril,itcontinuedwith themainevent. Onday1,therewas trainingdeliveredbyNEOOUTand NAFO,aswellastalk,showswith speakersfromLPDPawardeesat Harvard,andonday2,theactivity washeldintheAuditoriumofFK UNS,withseveralactivities,namely thepresentationofmaterialfrom LEOandLORECIMSAFKUNS,atalk showwithPPI,andcontinuedwith EXPOorexhibitionwhichmedical studentscouldattend.

Afterthisactivity,itwasshownthat therewasanincreaseinparticipants' knowledgeby9.6%aboutmedical studentexchangeinresearchexchange orinprofessionalbusiness.Bydoing thisactivity,wehopetohelpIndonesian medicalstudentsunderstandmoreand thenbeinterestedintakingpartinthe studentexchangeprogram.

“GettingtoKnowGlobalHealthMental Issues:HowMillennialsDealwithIt.” ThiseventwasheldintheHallofthe FacultyofMedicine,SyiahKuala UniversityeventonSaturday,April15, 2023,andconsistedofapanel discussion,talkshow,andFGD(Focus GroupDiscussion).Thiseventstartedat 14.00WIBandwasattendedby33 participants.

Thefirstseriesofeventswasa discussionbydr.SubhanRio Pamungkas,Sp.KJ(K)asthe representativeforIDIBandaAceh,dr. ZulfaZahra,Sp.KJasalectureratthe FacultyofMedicine,UniversityofSyiah Kuala,andNs.SriDahlia,S.Kep,M.Kep astherepresentativeforHealthOffice BandaAceh.Thethreespeakers expressedtheiropinionsanddiscussed thementalhealthsituationinIndonesia aftertheCOVID-19pandemic,which wasguidedbyM.ImamAuliaasthe moderatordiscussionpanel.Thenext seriesofeventswasthetalkshowand sharingsessionhostedbyZhafran Trashadi,theLEO-InofCIMSAFKUSK 2022-2023.Thespeakersarefrom IFMSAChile,namelyMatíasFuentes (NEO-InIFMSAChile)&IgnaciaGarcía Valdés(NEO-OutIFMSAChile).The speakersgavetheiropinionregarding

gavetheiropinionregardingthe relationshipbetweenthe3rdgoalof SDGsandglobalmentalhealthandthe stateofmentalhealthintheircountry andhowtopreventit.Thelastevent wasFGD(FocusGroupDiscussion),in whichparticipantsweredividedinto5 groups.Eachgroupgetsascenario relatedtomentalillness,andthe participantsdiscusstodeterminethe diagnosis,symptoms,treatment,and preventionofthediseaseaccordingto thescenarioobtained.Afterconducting thediscussion,theparticipants presentedtheresultsoftheir conversation.ThisFGDwasguidedby SriMulyaFitriasthemoderator.The activitiesinthiseventwereconducted byRiskaAyuni,theMasterof Ceremony.

ThemaingoaloftheSCALLOPS eventistoincreaseparticipants’ knowledgeandunderstandingof mentalhealthproblemsormental disorders,theirpotentialtobecome aglobalthreat,theirintegrationwith SGDspointnumber3,andaimsto enableparticipantstounderstand therolethatcanbeplayedto preventmentalhealthproblemsor disordersfromoccursmentally.Itis hopedthatparticipantsunderstand moreaboutmentalhealthdisorders andcanimplementthisknowledgein everydaylifeandshareitwith others.

Ihadspentfourfun-andadventurousyearsinCIMSAandIFMSA whenIfirstdecidedtotakepartasa memberwiththeideaofactinglocally andthusmakingaglobalimpact.Iwas electedasUNS’sLocalExchange Officerandafirst-timertohost15++ incomingstudentsworldwideinthe Summerof2018!Thosewere experiencesIhaveneverforgotten.I amhonoredtobeelectedNational ExchangeOfficerforIncominginthe followingyearsandrepresentSCOPE CIMSAIndonesiainIFMSA.Iwaspart ofIndonesia’s2020MarchMeeting DelegationinRwanda,Africa representingSCOPECIMSAIndonesia attheExchangeFair(ps.Itwasonlya1daydifferencebetweenthelastdayof themeetingandtheannouncementof theCOVID-19pandemic,huh?).Igot helpedalotduringmyactiveyearsin CIMSAthroughtheLocalExchange Committee(shout-outtoDevi,Nasya Yuda,Abi,Hana,andShaniya),NECtar (shout-outtoDwi,Alex,Sany,Hana, Velia,Anela,Intan,Alya,KakNadya, andKakSylvie)andLEOs!

Nowthatmytenurehadended,I wasstillactivelytakingpartasatrainer inlocal,national,andinternational

training.Itisalwaysnicetoshare experiencesandknowledgewith others.

Whatmotivatesyoutobeactivein CIMSAandIFMSA?

Atfirst,ItookpartinCIMSAbecause ofthehomesicknessofhavingstudied awayfromHomeandthefearof missingoutonmypeergroup,who choseCIMSAfirmlyinthefirstplace. Turnedoutitwasmorethanthat. This organization’smotto,“Empowering MedicalStudentsandImproving Nation’sHealth,”hasapowerful message. Thewidescopeofworksuits thehealthissuesweoftenface, deliveredinthemostexcitingways throughtheStandingCommittee.I alwaysthoughtthatonlylearninginthe lecturehallwasinsufficienttomeetthe future. Ihavegrownandprosperedin anenvironmentwheremyfriends andIweretaughtthatsoftskillsare equaltoformaleducation andthus wereothervaluesthatCIMSAcanoffer.

Canyoutellusaboutyourexchange experiencewithSCOPE?

Sure!Myinternationalmeetingwasa nerve-wrackingexperience.Istill rememberitwaslateFebruary2020 whentheworldwasstruckbythenews ofaviralrespiratoryinfectionthat posedarisktobecameaPandemic. ManyNMOsweredrawnbacktoattend themeetingduetoincreasedcasesof COVID-19intheircountries.Theother twodelegateswerehavingalotof discussionswithourDean,the Embassy,andeventheairlinesince manycountriesclosedtheirborders. Afteralong-waiteddebate,wedecided togotoAfrica!Thetripswere unforgettable;weusedanN-95mask duringthe24++hoursflight,cleaned ourhandswithhandsanitizerevery15 mins,andeventookturnseatingsowe didn’topenourmaskstogether.The hostcountryappliesaruletohavean oropharyngealswabforattendeesfrom

EastAsiaandanisolationmodefor24 to48hours.

ItwasthebestdecisionIhaveever taken.Theexperiencewasworththe risk.Thechancetomeetandexpose myselfinternationallybroadenedmy skill.Iwasbeyondproudtorepresent SCOPECIMSAIndonesia,especiallyat ExchangeFair,whereIintroducedthe ExchangeSysteminIndonesiato others!Onaspecialnote,itwasreallya heartwarmingsession,particularlyto meetmanypeopleIonlymetthrough exchangingthousandsofemailsasit wasourmaincommunicationasNEOs.

Ishavinganinternational exchangebeneficial?Ifyes,whydo youthinkitdoes?
