Hi Bondies!

Caroline Stanley

Welcome to Week 6. Things have been a bit strange around campus lately - the weather is strange, the mood has been strange, classes have been strange, and I’ve felt a little odd too. I have a confession: people keep asking me where I’ve been the past few weeks because BUSA elections might change. they haven’t seen me. I keep talking about This is not the most exciting thing about Scope today but it is something you how busy I’ve been but really; I have absoshould think about. Why? DILEMMA

By Anonymous

I was 8 years old when my sister first tried to commit suicide. She took a whole lot of pills while in her room one afternoon. It knocked her out, but she woke the next day and was ok. I didn’t find this out until very recently when the same sort of thing took a hold of me. Everyone was so used to my sister displaying ‘typical teenage tendencies’ and hiding away all the time. No one noticed her attempt at all; no one noticed her absence for that long night of pain. No one at all - not even my mother.

she was to be around, she had needed help - not contempt.

Here’s some food for thought. The guy who you’ve been chastising because he’s ‘dropped off the map’, goes home every night to an abusive family. The girl who has suddenly become more aggressive is dealing with a family tragedy. The guy who used to be the life of the party, who you assume is simply changing, has actually begun to sink in to a darker hole than ever before. You wouldn’t know any of it, it’s all too easy to close your eyes and have a The funniest thing about it was normal human reaction to all of that my sister didn’t really show these things- to become offended, signs of wanting to harm herself, or angry, or to simply cut someshe hid in her room most of the one from your life because they time, was incredibly angry, but aren’t as fun as they used to be. simply seemed like an irritable In cases I have seen, worse stilland undesirable teen. ok, despite what they have done. Mental illness takes form in many ways. Sadly though, we usually only associate things like depression with self-harm or evident sadness. It’s becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society that while mental illness is gaining the recognition it deserves, most still know nothing about the way it appears in some people. It’s very easy to forget that someone may need your help when he or she has become difficult to be around. I encourage all of those reading this to have a think and realise that sometimes not everything is as clear as it seems. People that you think would tell you everything, won’t. People, who are usually loud, aren’t just running off to focus on their studies. Someone who is quiet, who now becomes loud and crazy, isn’t just doing it because it’s a welcome change. The signs of what’s going on inside will never be as clear as you assume. We associate different forms of mental illness with stereotypical symptoms and it seems that to have such symptoms is ok, but if you are unfortunate to have any others, you may face a downward spiral that is simply exasperated by those around you. If they are creative, their works may take a different form- they may be of a more depressed nature, or may start displaying peculiar qualities. Remember that someone may be reluctant to talk about what has been going on at first, as it may be very personal. You need to focus on their feelings, rather than the cause itself. Often someone with these feelings may not even know what the cause is, and will be unable to speak to you about it. They may be ashamed or embarrassed and may act negatively at first. You will need to be tactful in your approach. People with conditions are often in denial, do not know what is going on with themselves, or are under a lot of pressure. They often do not want to go to a doctor or be forced in to a solution. The best thing you can do is to be a friend and encourage them to help themselves and admit to a plan of action to improve their life. Remember that while someone is in the throes of a condition, they may do many things that they don’t have complete control over. We are all capable of doing something and in a situation like this; the best thing to practice is forgiveness.

Bond Model UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE

By Rachel Young

On Friday 8th BUUNSA hosted the Bond Model United Nations Conference (BMUNC) with its largest delegation to date; 45 eager and well dressed Bondies. Outside it may have been raining, but inside the room was hot with debate, thinly veiled insults, and a bare footed Israel who pretended that his nation cared about international law. The topic that caused so much raucous: establishing criteria for humanitarian intervention. The responsibility to protect is one of the more contentious global issues in the world right now. It proved to be the perfect platform for a bunch of self confessed international relations enthusiasts (note: its not nerdy if you’re wearing a sharp suit) to get their MUN on. As Bond is sending its largest ever delegation to the World Model United Nations in Week 10, things got serious pretty fast as we all tried to prove who could (pretend) to know the most about R2P. Things got kicked off with a blatant Israeli Holocaust jab at Germany. Luckily for us, the representative for Her Majesty’s Government Connor McBain retained some class and decorum, rising above the petty banter (the English like to get things done). As the representative for France (je suis la

meilleure) lets just say I got a lot of heat; we French do love to invade and restore the proper order (I stick by my story that unilaterally entering Mali was perfectly legal). Syria’s Matt Jones clung to his sovereignty and demanded those pesky terrorists irritating his sweet land be annihilated. Eoin Coffey as Ireland managed to bring the kind of comfort to the room that only such a well-built man can, and Maddie Donovan as the great United States showed us how a well-dressed woman can command a room. Another new addition to BMUNC was the live twitter feed (official hashtag #BMUNC) which gave Bondies the opportunity to comment on the debate. Of course, a group of suited up young people trying to get their opinions across on the internet got interesting (#sometooinappropriateforScope). We even got a #bmunctroll halfway through debate. Looks like its not just Hilary Clinton who can harness the power of the Internet. Here are some of my top picks:

As a large majority of the Bondies participating were losing their MUN virginity, so to speak, we had some minor hiccups. Props go out to all the students who did their first time MUN. Whether you were more adept in subtly slipping over the rows of tables to get at your allies during unmoderated caucus, or whether you could poker face bluff in-depth knowledge on R2P case law, everyone did a fantastic job.

By Georgina Chao I have been fantasising about the day I would graduate for a long ass time now. Not because I thought I was going to be Valedictorian (have you seen my GPA?) or because I was so excited to get a job (I have to work?) and definitely not because I hated Bond and couldn’t wait to leave (Queen B never wants to leave). But I have always wanted to tell everyone I have encountered, exactly what I thought of them to their face, and it seemed like the last day was the most appropriate time to do so before I could run, really fast, far away.

Bond. Somehow, we are still a wolf pack and the thing that is most daunting about leaving the bubble and entering the real world is doing it without them by my side. I made plenty of mistakes. I started assignments too late, I cared too much about what people thought, I didn’t start my templates until the day before the exam, I kissed the same boy too many times and another one not enough, I didn’t keep secrets, I didn’t tell the truth,

I was 17 years old when my parents first moved me into A Block and I was naïve as hell. My advice - make mistakes. Woah. Just when you thought I was about to launch into some ‘world is your oyster’ dribble…

... I ate too many Café Bond croissants, I Facebook stalked too many bitches ... and I drank a little too much. I also had such a ripper of a time that I forgot to work out what I wanted to do with my life (sozzy GDO). But without all these ‘oops I did it again’ blunders, my time at Bond wouldn’t be mine. So just make yours, yours and you will regret nothing. Congratulations to our graduating class! I hope you look back on the few/many years when you called the Gold Coast home with the same emotion that I do. We did it. And now it is time for us to make our new family proud.

Film Review: Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines By Dylan Hans

Paris “Spazz ma paz” Faint game review DmC: Devil May Cry

This is a prejudicial review. Despite the negativity that the overused Wrong Turn movies received, I have been a loyal and pleased fan – up until number 5. Unfortunately, in what is hopefully the last chapter of this series, disgusting screenwriting and a massively restrictive budget ruin a film with potential. A slight warning that this review will contain spoilers. Before I absolutely crucify this film, its good sides need to be acknowledged. First and foremost, Bloodline’s sex and gore scenes are top notch. Seeing 3 inbred mutants impale a man’s knees with sledge hammers was right up there with a rural homage to the Ancient greek torture method of the brazen bull. In the narrowest sense of a slasher, this film scores pretty damn well. Also, the largely British cast wasn’t too shabby. Unfortunately, as a film, Wrong Turn 5 is a classic stuff-up resulting in a profitable franchise going too far. Evidently, create Declan O’Leary, who also wrote For centuries, scholars and philosophers have been searching for an answer to the question, “what is a badass?” Many alternatives have been offered these past few decades, for example: Arnold Scwarznegger getting to his chopper, Uma Thurman killing Bill and of course Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking people to the face.

this film, believed that the franchise was enough to sell the film, regardless of the utter stupidity of his screenwriting. For example, the viewer clearly sees hundreds, if not thousands, of young teenagers going wild in the streets of the small town where the film is set. Somehow, just because the power goes out, not a single one of these teens, other than our victims, happen to notice the gang of cannibals terrorising the cardboardcut-out town with several gun battles and probably five consecutive minutes of screaming. It’s just stupid and ignorant to believe, as a director and screenwriter, that these blatant flaws would be overlooked.A Doug Bradley, best known for his portrayal of the classic horror figure, Pinhead, features in the film as an obvious selling point. While he suits the role well, the character he plays is repetitive at best and largely annoying. Furthermore, the hillbillies have lost their creepiness. With the leading cannibal, Three-Finger, having no response or displays beyond laughter, it is very difficult to take this movie seriously. Ultimately, it’s not scary and it’s not creative. This is a film to watch with a group of friends who can find humour in cheap, nasty horror.

He also appears to have swapped his classy red leather overcoat to a lengthy hobo-jacket; which I still reckon he pulls off equally well. Despite this controversial change in Dante’s sense of fashion, his fighting style is just as awesome as it ever, and he still remains a wisecracking, demon-slaying machine. Men, you will love this game for its brutal and extremely satisfying combat, and for its intricate yet explosive level design. Women, you will love this game for all the same reasons plus one; Dante is one hot piece of ass that definitely isn’t shy about it.
