Caroline Stanley Hi Bondies! Welcome to Week 10. YAY a month left of semester!!!! Time to go heads down thumbs up for those last few pesky assessments and get ready for exams!
With nearly every sporting facility in the University shut down due to weather, construction or exams it has been a rough semester for sport here at Bond. In light of this, clubs are still battling to host their competitions and run their social programs.
It’s that time of semester when people start letting simple things fall by the wayside; exercise, good eating habits, sleeping patterns, positive thinking ... their sanity ... and so I would like to There is some light at the end of the tunnel though; both AFL and remind everyone of a few things that Rugby fields look to be open at the end of the week full time dependent on weather. Gen Y: Not so lazy after all? The days of lazy young Australians may be over, writes Anita Nielsen, as an investigation into Gen Y shows they’re harder working than their stereotype beholds.

Gen Y will feel the brunt of precarious working conditions, which have now become almost normative. “This means insecurity, few safeguards, few opGen Y is born between the early 1980’s to mid 1990’s. It’s the generation of social media, music festivals and illegal downloading. The word ‘like’ is scattered through every spoken sentence, nevertheless, research shows they seem to be rejecting their ‘lazy’ stereotype. Every weekday, Elise wakes to freshly pressed laundry and a breakfast of seasonal fruits and roasted muesli. As the sun rises, she laughs with her sisters, waves goodbye to her mum, and leaves her five-bedroom home to style hair at the local salon. Her routine is similar to many young Australians, working full-time and living at home with parents well into their late 20’s.
Elise enjoys the comforts of home and is grateful for the quality time she has with her family. “It’s easier living at home because I don’t pay as much rent as I would living on my own, and my food is generally paid for,” admits Elise. “I would really struggle on my current salary.” ABC Reporter Eleanor Hall says a report tracking Australia’s social trends has found the lives of 21-year-olds is a lot different from common perception. “The researchers spoke to hundreds of young Australians, and found they value travel over material goods, and they only stay at home longer because they can’t afford to leave,” states Hall. Rebecca Huntley, author of ‘The World According to Gen Y’, agrees 21-year-olds aren’t content with just leeching off their parents. “It tends to be the stereotype of our young Australians, they’re kind of happy to stay at home forever and get mum and dad to pay for everything. And there was no evidence in this research that that was the case,” says Huntley. Huntley wonders if Generation Y will be the first to turn its back on the Australian dream of home ownership.“I’m interested to see whether they are at the forefront of reshaping our obsession with home ownership and particularly having to have a house,” stated Huntley.
qualified education, Gen Y is looking at a starting salary anywhere between $40,000$60,000 and they are expecting more.
According to Hays Recruiting Agency, “Gen Y believe work-life balance is a given and an employer should provide them with ongoing learning and development, career progression, mentoring and strong leadership.” “Gen Y believes their worth is above the market average, perhaps because they are very aware that skills shortages exist in the market.” Director of Hays Recruiting Agency Nick Deligiannis, says people are misguided about the attitudes of many Gen Y’s. “We have a generation of young professionals who are highly creative, well educated and technologically advanced,” he says. “They want to be challenged.” Wyn agrees that Gen Y expects quality work, “Gen Y seeks opportunities to keep on learning, flexible options, plenty of chances to learn about different parts of the organisations – and travel.”
Sam leaves the office just after dusk. He slips into swimmers and dives into the deep-water mass of the local pool. Elise’s uncertainty of being able to own a home is likened to As he kicks, each splash releases his nerves and reinforces many young Gen Y, and she is concerned it will be a long an innate drive to succeed. to time. “It’s important for a workplace to give freedom with direction, the more freedom you provide someone the more conducive it is to their activity.” “I love what I do, and more freedom with time is good for my productivity. I will apply myself if I am there by choice, rather than force,” claims Sam. “Due to regular staff development days which focus on individuals and the direction of the company, I’m going to work to do a job I chose to do.”
Employment Services Specialist, Kylie Pamenter says Gen Y has a confidence in their own abilities; a hunger to succeed and they are always looking to better themselves and their skills. “The students I’m working with are very up to date with what they will have to do when they enter the workforce, yet they are also aware that they will be working long hours and starting at the bottom,” states Pamenter. “They are looking for supported working environments and companies that will offer them room to grow.” Gen Y has all of these expectations, although employment is competitive and they may have to take what they get. With the GFC and downturn in business, many employers have had to cut the numbers of available positions. However, in Pamenter’s recruitment experience there is always work out there. “This is where networking and developing an employment strategy is vital. It is now becoming more important to be graduating with a degree,” she says. “This is what employers want.” It seems living standards could suffer, as Gen Y invest more time and money into education, and enter the workforce later. This delays housing affordability, parenting – settling down. But this is what employers’ demand, people who are highly educated. Elise feels lucky with her workplace as she has a “great team, and set hours,” so she can enjoy leisure time. Yet until she’s earning more money, she sees herself living at home for a while longer. Sam is optimistic, even though he is uncertain in facing the challenges of managing affordability with lifestyle. “It seems to have a good job you need to live near the city, yet to have a decent home, you need to live in the outer suburbs – and then you need to factor in family and friends, so I don’t want to live too far away,” concedes Sam. “There’s also finishing Uni and paying back the massive debt when you start earning money, as well as my wishes to travel before I settle down, because we are part of such a global community. It all costs money.”
[THIN]SPIRATION By Chanel Heeren Have you ever noticed the amount of times the words “thinspiration” and “thinspo” appear when scrolling through your Instagram news-feed? I see countless numbers of users uploading photos of models and wanting to look like them. It’s okay to set personal goals for yourself but where does the line get drawn when it becomes more than just a motivation? Eating disorders and negative body image are major concerns facing many Australian adolescents and teens today. There is also a large amount of negative eating habits, self-harm and body images on social media pages that are becoming extremely disturbing. Around one in five Australian teenage girls will experience a form of eating disorder, and it is believed anorexia is the third most chronic illness in women. When Instagram was first created in 2010 its purpose was to allow users to take and share photos using a smart phone device, much similar to a photo blog on the go. The revolution has now created a new generation and culture that involves applying colored filters to photos that users find interesting and share them with their followers. In late 2012, the popularity of the app grew to around 100 million active accounts worldwide. However, there seems to be a certain dark side that is affecting many young users. “Thinspiration” and “thinspo” accounts and hash-tags have all created a new norm that idolises images of thin, unattainable images of models. The images of extremely thin women on the social networking app allows users to come together and encourage each other to lose weight and promote their distorted eating habits. The users that embrace in the “thinspo” lifestyle believe it’s a choice and not an illness. I know from experience, when browsing Instagram, I’ve come across a large number of “thin-
spo” accounts displaying eating plans and work out routines along with images of thin models that encourage their followers to set weight loss goals. Due to the rise in popularity of the app, there have also been a number of businesses that have joined the social media craze to promote tea detoxes and eating plans, and even boot camps and challenges. Professor Psychologist Marika Tiggemann from Flinders University says that the amount of time spent engaged in the Internet, in particular social media, could significantly impact negative body image. “A couple of studies have now shown that time spent on the Internet, especially social media, is severely related to negative body image. This makes sense as there are a lot of appearance-focused sites, clothes, magazines and celebrity pages that specify in proana and thinspo.” Professor Tiggemann says people that are dissatisfied with their appearance will generally look for solutions, usually in dieting which can get out of control. I know a girl that had suffered from an eating disorder for two years, and towards the end of high school she dropped down to a weight of 39kg. She always used to tell me how dissatisfied she felt about her image when she looked in the mirror, but what I saw when I looked at her was purely skin and bone. She got to the point where she became stuck in a routine and refused to anything that wasn’t scheduled. She was always so controlled about her lifestyle, especially her eating habits. She says that her disorder began to take priority over her life. She lost contact with her close friends because she didn’t want to go out and socialise. It’s confronting how a simple social media app such as Instagram can be used to fuel dangerous eating habits and routines.
MOVING: THEN AND NOW By Alex Hamlyn
MY FAVOURITE TEDDY BEAR AND PRECIOUS PHOTOS WERE PACKED AWAY. Boxes were stacking up around me and cleaning had begun. The removal truck was on its way and nervousness had crept up behind me. In room after room everything I knew was slowly disappearing into boxes, neatly tucked away for the long journey ahead. This was it. The long awaited move was finally upon us. There was excitement in the air as we watched everything slide into the back of the truck like jigsaw pieces fitting together. Everything that had taken so long to pack away was quickly swept up and became another piece in the puzzle. Our home grew emptier and emptier and before we knew it, it was time for us to go too. Down to the airport we rushed, eager to make sure our beloved kitty didn’t miss the plane. The hustle and bustle of passengers checking in and rushing to their terminals couldn’t distract me from the hollow feeling in my stomach. We were on a one-way flight. Feelings were swept aside in the rush to board the plane and secure the best seat (the window of course). And before I had even taken a breath we were in the air and on our way to the unknown. I watched the flight attendants with their groomed hair and impeccable make-up saunter up and down the aisle. I watched the well-dressed woman diagonally across from me leisurely flick through her Marie Clare magazine. In front of her was a young boy in scuffed green shoes eating his way through a ham and cheese sandwich like he had never eaten before. Everyone was just going about his or her daily life. Apart from me. I closed my eyes for what seemed like a second and was startled back to reality by the commanding voice of the flight attendant preparing the plane for landing. My heart quickened. Best friends and a boyfriend had been left behind. Everything it seemed, had been left behind.
One month later and I don’t know why I worried so much. Most of my treasures have found their way back to their beloved spots. The same pictures hang on the walls and the same clothes hang in my cupboard. My room is smaller but just enough to feel cosy. There is less crap lying around, courtesy to my mother’s culling craze before we left. But most importantly, the same people live under our roof. In a backward and crazy kind of way I’ve realised that home is where everything you love is. It’s where your family is, where your friends are and where your favourite possessions are. It doesn’t matter what state you live in or how long you have lived there. Home is where you make it. Everything that seemed like a big deal at the time is now a triviality. It doesn’t matter that there are still a few unpacked boxes lying around. One day when I am sick of tripping over them I will delve inside and be jolted back to memories past. It has been a major change in my life but it has been a change for the better. Change keeps us on our toes and gives us new things to aspire towards. It makes us feel revitalized and fresh. It gives us a whole new outlook on life and a fresh burst of strength to tackle anything that comes our way. Change is risky but it is also enormously rewarding.
WHOWOREITBETTER: PAPAL EDITION By Jack Blackburn Pope Benedict’s resignation as the top-dog at the Church, has come in a wave of controversy and scandal, even from the man upstairs himself.
a full flock of hair, Francis may be in danger of breaking his vow of celibacy. His John Lennon inspired glasses marry well with his simple white robe, however it begs the question that Francis may divert from his true calling for a 21st century Yoko Ono. His chains and accompanying ring emphasise his new school mentality,
It has been proven that lightning struck St Peter’s Basilica hours after Benedict declared his position to the world. Safe to say God didn’t handle the break up too well and is leaning pretty close to the Shelly Gallebsy zone on the crazy-hot scale. Regardless of the vengeance of God, the most important aspect was obviously Pope Francis’ frock, and of course, his accessories. The 76 year old package from God bounced into Vatican City from Argentina. The exoticness of a non-European pope has created a distinct allure, leaving pews at mass at capacity with women seeking repentance. Francis’ Zucchetto (Pope’s cap) is more pronounced on skull, emphasising his obvious balding and age. However, the author finds this subtle defect honourable, if not desirable for Church groupies who, to quote Fergie “just can’t get enough”. With
Benedict XVI vs Pope Francis aiming to divert swagnificent teens towards Catholicism. Benedict XVI was forced into retirement due to a “lack of strength of mind and body”, an event that is as a rare as a sincere fart in Church. Old Pope Benedict was of course conscripted into Hitler Youth as a young child, leaving his notorious wave questioned about its intentions. However his cheeky school boy smile brings everyone back on side, reveal-
ing his kind nature and humility despite his position.
“Sporting a velvet red robe etched with illuminati paraphernalia, Benedict glistened under the sun, like a true disciple of God.”
However, his outfit seemed botched and unplanned. His black undergarment and overabundance of colour reminds the author of Emperor Palpatine of Star Wars after a week sipping mojitos on a tropical Island. While a distinct lack of originality is shown by Pope Francis, he has effectively followed the motto; ‘less is more’. With little flair, his outfit suggests little progression and modernisation within the church until his passing. Overall, while we appreciate Benedict’s attempts to spice up his outfit, getting a little bit (hollandaise) saucy, the overwhelming majority of us fancy Francy. This is likely to be a bitter pill to swallow for the vitriolic, shopaholic, Catholic Benedict, but the divine judgment has been passed!

PIPE THE F#@K DOWN Recently, cultural icon Jenna Marbles raised an important point in one of her deeply philosophical YouTube videos, that point simply being that there is an abundance of members of our society who, for want of a better phrase (but let’s face it there isn’t one), need to pipe the fuck down, both in their words and deeds. Sadly, it often appears that those most in need of a good downpiping are the most oblivious to this fact. To help these people, and indeed as a reminder to myself, I’ve compiled a list of potential warning signs that is by no means exhaustive. You may need to pipe down if; • You catch yourself telling people how much your outfit cost • You’re that guy • You’re saying YOLO, and not ironically • You’re saying or wearing anything ironically • You’re displaying any kind of undergarment • People are punching you • You spent more than half an hour styling your hair • You’re in the silent section • You’re telling someone how much you lift • You’re telling virtual strangers explicit details about your sex life • You’ve posted more than one facebook status today • Your profile picture is a selfie • You’re in my house when I’m trying to sleep • You’re a mature age student • You’re an American • You’re a freshman • You’re bitching about how annoying freshman are, you were never like that • You’re picking fights on facebook • You constantly complain without offering a solution • The teacher says “You can all go unless there are any questions,” and you ask a question… • #youusetoomanyhashtags • You enjoy combining alcohol and political debate • You one crazy drunk bitch • You’re talking during the movie • You cut people off when driving • You keep posting in public events giving like a million people a million notifications. • You squeal when drunk • You whine when people post unattractive photos of you • You do up your top button when you’re not wearing a tie • You think your degree is definitely the hardest • You talk about how much you earn • You’re asking a question to which you know the answer • You write smug lists about things people should and shouldn’t do

JURASSIC
PARK BUILDER
I was at a mate’s house not too long ago. We were both drunk as skunks and quickly running out of interesting and witty things to say to one another. Naturally, when the conversation ran dry (along with the rest of the gin) my friend and I turned to our phones. Whilst I wasted away, trawling through the mire of Insta-selfles and YouTube videos, I noticed my friend was doing something far more interesting, so I leaned over to take a peek. To my amazement, my friend had created his very own mini-version of Jurassic Park, and was in the process of feeding two very gnarly
Five seconds later I downloaded the app for myself, Jurassic Park Builder, and within minutes I was staring my very own Triceratops down the horns. A few months have passed since, and I can say with absolute confidence that Jurassic Park Builder is one of the most satisfying iPhone games I’ve ever played. All the characters you love play a role. The well-drawn caricatures of Malcolm, Hammond and Grant (to name a few) give you missions to complete as you build your park, adding dinosaurs, vehicle tracks and decorations to improve your earnings. You can even add your own ‘Water Park’ expansion after you reach a certain level, giving you the ability to introduce all manner of weird and wonderful sea creatures to your already blossoming collection of land-based beasts.
SPORTS BOND TENNIS OPEN BY JAMES C ORNISH The semesterly tennis event, the Bond tennis open appeals to tennis players of all abilities to play in a casual knock-out tournament with a second chance draw. The event contains food, drink, shade and good company whilst watching some quality tennis; a lovely way to spend a Friday. Bond Tennis Open 131 did not have the smoothest of starts however with only 3 of the original 8 advanced players turning up at the allotted 11:30am timeslot. This caused a large switch up of the draws but through the cunning of tournament directors Daniel Jade and Shen Meister, the advanced tournament was still able to continue. James Cornish defeated Vladymyr Novykov to advance to the finals where he would face Shen Meister. The scoreline did not accurately represent a close match where several games would go down to the wire. The consistent aggression that James managed to display on the day however was too much for Shen and James would take the title in two sets: 6-2, 6-2. Another member of the advanced crew Grant

Hatley, arrived and allowed for more games to be played. Shen played Grant for the second spot and the consistent slice by Shen proved to be effective, winning 6-1. Grant and Vladymyr then played off for the 3rd spot and despite some strong hitting by Vladymyr, Grant managed to get the win. The intermediate crew’s turn out was much greater however with the tournament being able to be played off how it should have been. Elliott Kraa, the number 1 seed, stormed through to the finals, dropping only a few games on his route. Kingsley Advani, the number 2 seed, served well and played with great consistency to lead him to the final where he would meet Elliott. The match was undeniably close, with many games coming down to the wire. Elliott was too much on the day however and just managed to squeeze past Kingsley, winning 7-5 in a great match to watch from the crowd. Despite losing in the hour-long nail biter against Vanessa Franks, Thomas Maxwell managed to take out the second chance draw to round out the tournament. A big thanks goes to Luis Kennedy for organising the draws and to Daniel Jade and Shen for organising the event on the day, as well of course to all the participants that made up a great tournament.

BOND DEBATING UNION’S ‘WILL ARGUE FOR …’
FOR The time of Rule Brittania has long past. The UK can no longer claim that the sun never sets on the British Empire, and it is time they recognised it. Argentina has always claimed they are the sovereign owners of the Falkland Islands, it is in their Constitution, but the UK have constantly played the ‘we settled here first’ card, a card we know they have abused in the past. Unfortunately for Argentina, they cannot negotiate with a nation that resolutely responds with the unjustified no of a little girl trying to irritate her parents. Action is essential, and it is time they took it.
AGAINST Lets ignore the fact that if Argentina were to invade again they would get crushed, and focus instead on what the people want. The Falklands just voted on whether they should remain a British territory, and the response was overwhelming. Out of the almost 2000 people that voted, exactly 3 said they wanted to leave the Commonwealth. In this age of Democracy and power to the people, the only voice that matters is the voice of the people. If Argentina were to invade again, I dare say they would be met by the Falkland Islanders themselves, wielding pitchforks and scythes.
