2012-2013 Outlook Men’s Basketball
Maryville College Fighting Scots Season Preview 2012-2013 The Maryville College men’s basketball program has been consistent over the past years. Their tradition of excellence has expanded over two decades with numerous conference titles and NCAA national tournament appearances. Coach Lambert and his squad will experience a new challenge as they compete in the uptempo, athletic USA South Conference for the first time. This year’s team is young, but that does not mean they are inexperienced. Three of the projected starters all received ample minutes as freshmen last season. Returning at the point guard position will be sophomore Christian Ford. His experience as a 27 game starting freshman has prepared him to be the floor general. This talented scorer and distributor averaged 10.8 points a game last season while shooting 80% from the free throw line and 44% from behind the arc. He was selected for allconference and all-freshman team honors within the Great South Athletic Conference. Junior J.P. Burris and freshman Tanner Torres will also be called upon to lead the Scots on Randy Lambert Court. Burris has worked hard in the offseason and is more confident with the ball. Torres is ready for the college game. He possesses the physical aspects required of his position and he can shoot from long range. As with all rookie collegians, he will continue to work on his decision making and hopes to impact the squad in the near future. The wing positions will be filled by MC’s lone senior Wes Lambert and sophomore Oscar Butler. Lambert will serve as the team leader this season with his floor communication as one of his greatest strengths. As a two guard, Wes will be expected to score. He has a career double digit average at 10 points per game. Butler moves from a power forward last year to a wing position because of his ability to create mismatches and knock down shots. He has played facing up to the basket in the past and this new role has been a fairly easy transition for him. Coach Lambert is expecting him to be a stat builder and to compile numbers in rebounds, assists, steals, and points. Oscar is the leading rebounder among returners and second in blocked shots from a season ago. Also contributing at the wing positions will be junior Craig Raye, sophomore Jethro Griffin, and freshmen Spencer Shoffner and Richard Kelly. Craig Raye returns this season as a better decision maker and could end up 2

playing substantial minutes for the Scots. Griffin looks to bring his athleticism and consistency off the bench and has the ability to score. Shoffner and Kelly have impressed the coaching staff and each has the potential to be impact players on the college floor. Opponent’s power forwards plagued the Scots’ defense last season and Coach Lambert hopes to have found the solution in a pair of international student-athletes. Freshman Jose Agosto from Puerto Rico will be sharing the responsibility with junior Isaac Mbimi from Cameroon. Both of these players have similar attributes and will be relied on heavily for defense and rebounding. These talented post players are both strong and powerful with good low post scoring ability and have the capability to step out and hit mid-range jumpers. Sophomore Spencer Peake will also see some action at this position. At 6’4’’, he is undersized, but he has an uncanny knack to score in the lane and out at the three point line. Joey Bodewig will be the big man in the paint for the Scots this season. He led the team in blocks last year while averaging 6.4 points a game. As a freshman, he received vital experience in his 27 games played. He has worked on the offensive aspects of his game and Coach Lambert expects to give him 15 to 20 touches a game. He will use his physical “banger” type of play and an arsenal of low-post moves to help the Scots produce points in the paint. Freshman Jaumonee Byrd will also receive ample playing time in the paint. Byrd has the low-post moves and 10-15 foot jump shot that comes with his finesse type of post play. He is an athlete who plays hard on both ends of the floor. Coach Lambert is adopting the philosophy of strength in numbers. He expects the bench to play sizable minutes which will lead to another round of freshmen potentially getting experience in the college game. The depth of this squad will help on back to back nights of play in their new conference schedule. Preparation will be important this year as the Scots look to diversify their game plan and exploit their opponent’s weaknesses. Maryville has competed year in and year out over the past decade with almost every team in the new conference. The Scots’ non-conference schedule is well respected across the South region. Strong regional programs like Centre, Guilford, Emory, and Birmingham Southern will challenge the Scots and prepare them for the rigors of the USA South. Coach Lambert’s philosophy on scheduling over the past 33 years has never changed; play the best teams in the South and let your young men grow through each challenge.
Welcome to the USA South Athletic Conference USA SOUTH ATHLETIC HISTORY Established in 1963 as the Dixie Conference. They were originally a member of the NAIA and operated under the viewpoint of college athletes being amateurs and therefore not providing financial aid or scholarships for athletes. On June 30, 2003 the Dixie Conference was renamed the USA South Conference.

Message from the President Dr. Tom bogart President Maryville College The Maryville College Statement of Purpose states that we “prepare students for a world of uncertainty and accelerating change” and I made that phrase the theme of my inaugural address during my first year as president. Now in my third year, we have joined a new athletic conference with the chance to both continue previous rivalries and develop new rivalries. The membership in this athletic conference will change again next year. A world of uncertainty and accelerating change indeed. Just as it always has, our basketball program provides the chance for students to excel outside of the classroom as a complement to their rigorous academic experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the score. Our ideals of community are expressed in our Covenant engraved on the Covenant Stone outside Anderson Hall: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for the basketball program than as an expression of those high ideals.
Although we live in a world of uncertainty and change, the Maryville College tradition continues. I look forward to seeing you at the games where you can tell me about your experiences in the past and we can make new memories for the future.
Dr. Tom Bogart
President, Maryville College

Randy Lambert Head Basketball Coach
Randy Lambert enters his 33rd season directing the Maryville College basketball program in the 2012-13 season. Lambert is no stranger to the local community. He was born in Maryville, graduated from Maryville High School in 1972 and continued his education at Maryville College. As a member of the Scots basketball team, Lambert was a fouryear starter and garnered numerous honors, including the 16th leading scorer in the nation during his senior year. With 1,489 career points, he is currently listed as the eigth leading scorer in MC basketball history. Lambert’s first season as head coach of the Scots began in 1980 after three successful years at Lenoir City (Tenn.) High School. During his early years at MC, Lambert was faced with a major rebuilding task. Under his direction, the 1984-1985 Scots finished the regular season 17-8 and 11-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, clinching the conference championship. During the remaining seasons of the 1980’s, the MC cagers recorded a string of winning records. This was merely a sign of things to come for Lambert’s talented troops in the decade of the 1990’s. The 1990-1991 team shattered almost every school record in basketball. The team finished 22-5 and made the trip to the national tournament- the first such trip in MC’s basketball history. Lambert’s 1991-1992 squad did even better, ending the season with a 25-4 record. This outstanding team was ranked sixth nationally in the final poll and received the No.1

seed in the South for the national tournament. This team advanced to the final round of eight and was defeated in the finals of the sectional by Wisconsin-Platteville (87-83, O.T.). Building on the success of his teams in the early 1990’s, Lambert’s program has been a regular participant in the NCAA Division III National Tournament from 1999 until 2010. His Scots posted 12 consecutive trips to the NCAA post-season, 17 overall. During the decade of the 2000’s Lambert’s Scots have posted a .797 winning percentage which ranks No. 7 nationally. His 264 victories during the decade are the sixth best by any school within the NCAA Division III. With 602 career victories, Randy Lambert is one of the most successful NCAA Division III coaches. He is currently ranked 9th in the country among active head coaches and 13th among all-time coaches for most victories. Backed by its consistency in winning and its up-tempo style of play, his program is considered one of the best in the nation. Lambert’s career record is 602-257 for a winning percentage of .701. Lambert, his wife Alane, daughter Kami, and sons Jason and Wes, reside in Maryville.

He graduated from Cheatham County in 2004 and earned a full athletic basketball scholarship to Bethel University, a member of the NAIA. Following his first collegiate season at Bethel, Alex transferred and flourished at Maryville College. In 2007-2008, Bowers earned team most improved player honors after averaging 10.6 points per game. During his senior campaign he helped pace MC to a school record 17 game win streak while throwing down 15.6 points a game. This team MVP and All-Great South performer tallied 104 assists while shooting over 83% from the charity stripe in his final season in the orange and garnet. He was also honored by the NABC by earning All-South accolades. His Scots went 67-18 during his tenure (a 78.8 winning percentage) collecting three NCAA Tournament appearances, three GSAC regular season titles, and a pair of league tournament crowns. Bowers will assist with all basketball operations including instruction, development, and conditioning under Lambert. He will assist the varsity program and serve as the head coach of MC’s junior varsity program. He will assist in recruiting and coordinate the Scots video program.
Raul Placeres
AssistantBasketball Coach Raul Placeres, a 2006 Maryville College graduate, brings a wealth of experience to the Scots men’s basketball staff. Placeres, a translator in the Sevier County school system, will join Coach Lambert’s staff for a second consecutive season in 2012-2013 as an assistant coach. As a player this Miami native led Keystone Junior College to an “Elite 8” and “Final Four” appearance in the NJCAA following his freshman and sophomore campaigns. In his first year on the MC hardwood, the point guard paced his team in assists and led the Scots to a 23-6 record and an NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” finish. Following his senior season in the orange and garnet, he earned his second consecutive All-Great South Athletic conference accolade while breaking the school record for assists in a game with 17 dishes against Oglethorpe University. Raul was the captain of this team that finished the year 22-7, won a conference championship, and played in the national tournament. Upon graduation, Raul played in the prestigious Rocky Top Basketball League and signed professionally to play with the Knoxville Thunderbolts and Smoky Mountain Jam of the ABA. From 2006-2011 Coach Placeres developed the Gatlinburg Pittman High School basketball program into one of the top programs in the state of Tennessee. Before his arrival, the Highlanders won a total of 28 games in four seasons. From 2008-2011, when Placeres was named the head coach, G-P went 80-40. This three-time Sevier County “Coach of the Year” developed a pair of McDonald’s All-American nominees and sent seven players on to compete in college. On Coach Lambert’s staff, Placeres will serve as the lead varsity assistant and will coordinate all program recruiting and scouting efforts. He will assist Coach Lambert in designing game plans as well as post-game analysis. Coach Placeres will also serve as the Director of the Maryville College Basketball Camps. Raul resides in Maryville with his three year old daughter, Santina Sophia Placeres.
