2012-2013 Outlook Baseball Maryville College Fighting Scots Season Preview 2013 Second year head coach Paul Henry and his staff will look to build on a solid foundation of talent and experience following an 18-20 inaugural season as the Scots diamondmen skipper. MC’s entire starting outfield has moved on, vacating key contributions of a pair of All-Conference performers. As opportunity knocks to those roaming Scotland Yard’s outfield in 2013, MC’s infield will be one of the most talented, deep, and defensively strong in recent memory. Every coach desires to be their strongest up the middle for defensive consistency. Coach Henry is excited about his foundation in the middle infield and behind the plate. Nick Dean (Mineral Bluff, GA) will move from first base to shortstop this spring. Dean, who hit .362 last year and paced MC in doubles, played first base to allow his arm to recuperate from earlier surgery. He has excellent speed and the range to allow MC’s pitchers to pitch to contact. Andrew Mabini (Alpharetta, GA), last season shortstop, will back up Dean at short and be his pivot man in the middle as the Scots’ starting second baseman. Mabini hit over .320 in 130 at-bats and has excellent contact skills to move runners in the top of the order into scoring position. Freshman Zach Tonner (Dunwoody, GA) had an impressive fall season and will back up Dean and Mabini in the middle infield as well as challenge for playing time at the hot corner. Jesse Crisp (Maryville, TN) and Matt Jones (Crossville,TN) will anchor the third base position with Tonner pushing them for playing time. Crisp hit .288 in 60 at-bats last season while Jones posted a .245 effort in the same amount of playing time last year. First base will see a pair of newcomers to the position. Coleman Sullivan (Blairsville, GA) and Zack Blonder (Atlanta, GA) will both see consistent playing time at the position or as a designated hitter. Each had outstanding offensive fall season efforts and will be relied upon as strong run producers during the 2013 campaign. Travis Scates (Knoxville, TN) will be looked upon to direct MC’s talented pitching staff. Scates hit .257 platooning behind the plate. He committed only three errors in 115 chances. Shawn Ambrose (Clinton, TN) has excellent receiving and throwing skills and will bring a consistent bat to the Scots’ lineup when called upon. Blonder

will give Scates and Ambrose a break behind the dish when needed. Maryville’s most inexperienced unit will be its outfield. Five Scots will look to roam the spacious confines while providing the offensive firepower lost to MC’s 2012 seniors lost. Landon Tally (Maryville, TN) will take over in left field following a very productive season as MC’s designated hitter last year. Talley, the Scots’ lone left handed bat, hit .308 in 120 at-bats. Jake Ashe (Auburn, GA) will be his back up in left field. Garrett Gresham (Knoxville, TN) will get the start in centerfield. His speed and year of experience were key in a successful fall showing. Dan Oaklief (Lakewood, OH) will add another left handed bat to the lineup. He has a great first step and will give the pitchers a great deal of defensive confidence from centerfield. Chris Hamilton (Knoxville, TN) will take over duties in right field. The sophomore saw limited action in 2012 but will look to have a breakout second collegiate season. The Scots’ pitching staff will be tested during their new USA South schedule. Arguably one of the best NCAA Division III baseball conferences in the country will challenge a dozen of Maryville’s finest arms. Coach Henry will have five seniors with experience leading a staff that had a strong fall showing. MC’s staff will be anchored by Matt Dyer (Atlanta, GA), Trevor Brackett (Greensboro, NC), David Clifford (Louisville, KY) and Chris Sutherland (Smyrna, TN). Brackett and Dyer return over 100 innings of experience from last season. The middle innings will be attacked by Keylon Holloway (Maryville, TN), Garrett McDaniel (Kennesaw, GA), Danny Roselli (Wellington, FL), and Ryan Roach (Knoxville, TN). Cody Midgett (Cottontown, TN) and Nick Bowers (Tucker, GA) will be a pair of hard throwing righties charged to close the door for the Scots in 2013. The past success in the challenging Great South over the previous decade will set the foundation for what is needed to be successful in the new USA South Athletic Conference. Coach Henry and his staff are excited to begin this new chapter in MC’s storied baseball legacy.

Meet the Coach Paul henry

Head Coach Paul Henry brings a “player’s coach” mentality and a resume of NCAA tournament experience into his second year at the helm of the Maryville College baseball program, hoping to guide the Scots to their first national postseason action since 1977. His two years as an assistant at Penn State-Behrend, a year assisting the Scots’ program, and a season at the helm have prepared him well to take over his this historic program. As a head coach, his oversight of the well-being of the program is tantamount. However, his day-to-day role will include an emphasis on the offensive skills of the team, as well as the development of the position players. His recent playing experience allows him to relate to the student-athletes on and off the field, and to understand what they’re going through. In just four seasons between Behrend and Maryville, Henry has put together a Who’s Who list of award recipients.Players under Henry’s tutelage have earned, one ABCA All American honor, one D3Baseball All-American honoree, one ABCA regional Gold Glove winner, three all-region selections, 17 all-conference selections, and 16 conference all-academic distinctions. Prior to joining the Maryville staff, Coach Henry spent the previous two years as the assistant coach at Penn-State Behrend. Along with Coach Paul Benim, the Behrend Lions reached three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Paul worked primarily with the team’s catchers and the offense. During his time at Behrend, the team led the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in many stats including: batting average (’09), on-base percentage (’09 and ’10), triples (’09), and runs, hits, RBI’s, walks, and stolen bases all during the 2010 campaign. Additionally, Coach Henry helped develop five first team and nine second team all-conference players as well as a conference pitcher of the year, two conference players of the year and a d3baseball.com first team all-American. While at Behrend, Paul earned a Masters degree in Business Administration. As he does at Maryville, Coach Henry weighed heavily in the recruiting process at Behrend. During his time Paul helped recruit and train 20 student-athletes that made AMCC academic all-conference including one CoSida ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First-Team selection. Before his coaching days, Paul was a four-year letter winner at Penn-State Behrend. During his time on the field the Behrend Lions compiled the best record in school history at 116-58-1. Paul worked behind the dish and in the role of designated hitter. In 107 games played he fielded at a .988 clip behind the plate. Paul was a four year member of the academic allconference team. In each of Henry’s five seasons with the Lions, the program advanced to the AMCC Conference tournament. His team’s played for a pair of league titles and made two appearances in the ECAC Southern Region tournament. As a senior in 2008, he led the program to a 34-12 mark and led the Lions to their firstever MCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Paul received his B.S. in Biology from Behrend in 2008 and minored in Chemistry. During his first season leading the Scots, Maryville hit .312 as a team and posted one of their highest team fielding percentages (.961) since 1998.
