2012-13 Outlook WoMen’s Basketball Maryville College Fighting Scots Season Preview 2012-13 As the Maryville College women’s basketball team embarks on a journey of a new season and a new conference affiliation, Head Coach Darrin Travillian is excited about his prospects for success during the 2012-2013 campaign. “Every night in the USA South we will have to bring our A-game,” stated the third year mentor. Our timing is right competitively with our experience we have on the floor, but the level of competition on a daily basis has been elevated.” The Scots will attack their new experience with a very experienced squad, returning seven players who have averaged 46 points collectively throughout their career. The Scots will lean on four players to handle the floor general duties and distribute from the point guard position. Junior Lauren Burnett became a point guard last season following some key injuries and Coach Travillian like the way she manages the team. Burnett is a career 41% shooter from beyond the arc but knows how to let the playmakers around her make plays. “Lauren’s greatest attribute is her ability to execute the game plan,” stated Travillian. MC looks forward to the return of junior Lailah Farmer who is still in the rehabilitation phase of her injury last season. She was nationally ranked as a sophomore in her assist to turnover ratio and has the ability to make things happen with her outstanding quickness and court vision. Ashleigh Elliot and Alex Bond have also displayed the leadership skills needed to execute from the point guard position if the coaching staff wants to move Burnett to the perimeter to capitalize on her scoring talents. Bond is exceptional at creating plays while attacking the defense. Elliot has the range to knock down perimeter shots if moved to the shooting guard role. The shooting guard position returns a two-time all-conference playmaker in senior Janell Menard. Janell can deliver from beyond the arc, mid-range, or can post up her opponent with ease as evident of her 11.2 points per game average throughout her career. This scoring wing serves as a co-captain with Tayler Smith and displays All-Region skills each time she steps on the court. “In the past Janell was content to let others make the play,” stated Coach Travillian. “Now she wants the ball in any situation and can hurt the opposition with her scoring ability or uncanny knack to get to the boards as an offensive rebounder from the perimeter.” Ashleigh Elliot and Lauren Burnett will also contribute at this wing position due to their innate perimeter scoring skills. The small forward position will be filled by sophomore sensation Alex Bond. Her teammates call her the silent assassin because you will not even notice and she will have substantial points in the book because she can score in a variety of ways. This GSAC All-Freshman team performer is the best post player among the
Scots’ guards and she is creative, sneaky, and quick around the rim. Senior Donja Robbins is a strong 15-17 foot shooter with the ability to hit open three-pointers and is a willing offensive rebounder. She is coming back from injury and has been playing the best basketball in her career while being in the orange and garnet. She is excellent in fighting for long rebounds and takes advantage of second shot opportunities. MC’s power forward will be senior Kiera Payne. The Chattanooga native is a strong driver and slasher to the basket that possesses the quickest first step on the team. She is an unselfish and willing passer and displays her athleticism by guarding the opponents’ top perimeter scoring player. She contests the passing lanes and can go coast to coast with any opponent miscue. She earned All-GSAC honors last season and her ability to pepper the stat sheet with consistent numbers nightly will give her All-Region post-season looks. Senior Tara Heyboer will bring her strength as an inside-outside rebounder to help the Scots’ second shot opportunities. She is also a slashing scorer in the paint. Freshman Mackenzie Pucket has caught the eye of Coach Travillian and his staff this fall. Mackenzie has the skills to play all four guard positions. Her length and ability to put the ball on the floor will present a variety of mismatches for the opponent. She can score with either hand, post up, or hit the mid range jumper with ease. The Scots’ paint will be patrolled by two-time all-conference post player Tayler Smith. The senior has averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds during her first 78 games played for the Scots. This quiet scorer has thrown down over 53% of her shots from the floor and will be the go-to person in the post. She is unbelievably strong and athletic. This co-captain always plays hard and her leadership has been invaluable to the development of the team. Sophomore Kelsey Brown, a legitimate six-footer, will also be a force down low. She can play with her back to the basket and is learning to be a strong defensive player with exceptional shot blocking capabilities. “Our experience and depth will be a viable asset to our success within the USA South this year,” stated Coach Travillian. “Our tough league schedule combined with strong outside challenges from Centre, Thomas More, Emory, Millsaps and Birmingham Southern will prepare us for the rigors of potential post-season play.” With sights on MC’s first USA South regular season and tournament titles, the pre-season No.2 ranked Scots look to emulate their success of the past. Eight league titles in a dozen seasons and 18 NCAA post-season appearances provide a strong foundation for success to move MC forward in their new league affiliation. “Through the season, we look to show our fans and followers that our team will compete at a high level every night against some of the best competition within the NCAA Division III,” concluded Coach Travillian. Message from the President Dr. Tom bogart President Maryville College The Maryville College Statement of Purpose states that we “prepare students for a world of uncertainty and accelerating change” and I made that phrase the theme of my inaugural address during my first year as president. Now in my third year, we have joined a new athletic conference with the chance to both continue previous rivalries and develop new rivalries. The membership in this athletic conference will change again next year. A world of uncertainty and accelerating change indeed. Just as it always has, our basketball program provides the chance for students to excel outside of the classroom as a complement to their rigorous academic experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the score. Our ideals of community are expressed in our Covenant engraved on the Covenant Stone outside Anderson Hall: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for the basketball program than as an expression of those high ideals.
Although we live in a world of uncertainty and change, the Maryville College tradition continues. I look forward to seeing you at the games where you can tell me about your experiences in the past and we can make new memories for the future.
Dr. Tom Bogart
