Dear Friends of MC Football: This year marks the 120th year of Maryville College competing in intercollegiate football. Each time the Scots take the field, I am reminded that at Maryville we think in terms of student-athletes. In all of our athletic endeavors, including the football program, it isn’t just a quest for victories over competitors, but about learning lessons that will serve throughout life. Just as it always has, football provides that chance for students to excel outside of the classroom as a complement to Dr. Tom Bogart their rigorous academic experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the score. Our football program is strong coming into the 2013 season under the leadership of Coach Mike Rader, now in his second year. Statistics from his first year include the USA South Cochampionship, 12 All-USA South performers and 14 USA South All-Academic honorees. We look forward to the team’s accomplishments this season. Our ideals of community are expressed in our Covenant engraved on the Covenant Stone outside Anderson Hall: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for the football program than as an expression of those high ideals. Although we live in a world of uncertainty and change, the Maryville College football traditions and history continue unwavering. I look forward to seeing you at the games as we cheer the Fighting Scots.

The catalyst for a new and exciting direction for Maryville College’s football program was the hiring of new head coach Mike Rader and his staff in 2012. Coach Rader took the reigns as Maryville College’s Head Football Coach in the winter of 2012. The Johnson City, Tenn., native became the 28th head coach in Maryville College’s storied 120-year history.

The RADER FILE ETSU Bachelor of Arts 2002 ETSU Master of Arts 2004 Graduate Assistant Troy Graduate Assistant 2004 Huntingdon Assistant Coach 2004-2011 Maryville Head Coach 2012-Present
During his inaugural season with the Scots, Maryville posted a 6-4 record and 5-2 mark within the tough USA South Athletic Conference giving Maryville its highest finish in the USAC after eight seasons within the league and the College’s first football title since MC’s Highlanders took back-toback Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference titles under Honaker’s direction in 1930 and 1931.
Rader helped the Hawks earn a 52-20 record while receiving “Top 25” votes in five different seasons. Rader displayed significant experience in building a successful NCAA Division III program. While at Huntingdon, his Hawks developed one of the most prolific offenses in college football. In 2009, Huntingdon was the only offense in the nation (Divisions I, II, or III) to average over 300 yards of passing and 200 yards of rushing per game. As the Hawks’ recruiting coordinator for the past two seasons, Rader’s staff has brought in more than 170 student-athletes to campus after developing strategies for student-athlete searches, visits and oncampus presentations. Mike, his wife Lindsey and son Max, reside in Maryville.
His 2012 USA South Co-Champions produced a dozen All-USA South performers and 14 league All-Academic honorees. Coach Rader’s squad won their final three games with a defense that paced the league in four categories. Their offense boasted the league’s top rusher while averaging 211 yards per game on the ground. His creative offense finished the season averaging over 366 yards per challenge. Rader received his Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State University in 2002. A threeyear starter on the Buccaneer football squad as a student, he earned a football scholarship after an All-State career as a quarterback and receiver at Science Hill High School in Johnson City. Following graduation, he attained his Master of Arts degree in sports management from ETSU while serving as a graduate assistant for his alma mater. Following a season at Troy University in Troy, Ala., under head coach Larry Blakeney, he was chosen by Huntingdon to help build the school’s program from the ground up. Prior to his Maryville stop, Rader was a former assistant football coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. He coordinated the recruiting efforts and assisted the offense for eight seasons at the Division III, church-related, liberal arts school. In 2004, Rader was selected by Huntingdon Coach Mike Turk to improve results and bring stability to a second-year start up NCAA Division III program.

Philip Bailey
Offensive Line Coach Strength & Conditioning Coordinator Coach Bailey will enter his second season in 2013 as MC’s Offensive Line Coach. He will also serve the program as the Scots’ football strength and conditioning coordinator. His O-Line in 2012 cleared the way for the USA South’s top rushing offense in league play averaging 233 yards per conference challenge. A trio of linemen earned All-USA South honors after helping MC average over 367 yards per game in total offense. Bailey graduated from Huntingdon College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Coaching Education. He served as the Hawks’ team captain in 2008 and earned all-conference accolades that same season. While attending Georgia Southern University to attain his Masters in Sport Management, he served as a graduate assistant from 20092010. Coach Bailey gained valuable experience in managing day to day operations within a collegiate football program while organizing the development of both offensive and defensive lines. He has experience in coordinating all off-season workout programs and overseeing weight room facilities. As a defensive graduate assistant, the Eagles finished first in the Southern Conference in scoring defense, rushing defense, and red zone defense. He worked to develop All-Americans Brent Russell and Laron Scott while helping Georgia Southern finish with a No.5 National ranking in the 2010 Division I FCS final poll.
Paul Humphries
Secondary Coach Special Teams Coordinator Coach Humphries comes to Maryville after a successful six seasons as the defensive backs coach at Morehead State University. He gained extensive experience in athletic operations and academic success promotion while guiding the Eagle’s secondary and special teams units. He had collegiate coaching stops at Belhaven College (Mississippi), Costal Carolina University (South Carolina), Cumberland College Kentucky) and East Tennessee State University where he developed his foundation for defensive and special teams excellence. Coach Humphries has extensive recruiting experience in the south and southeast and looks to bring his attention to detail and passion for student-athlete excellence to the Scots’ staff. 2013 P r e - s e a s on ou t l ook Last season, the Maryville College Fighting Scots made history by winning their first conference championship since 1931. Under the first year coach, Mike Radar, the Scots were able to endure early losses and go on to finish the season 6-4 after ending the season with a three-game winning streak. Although the statistics speak highly of this group of athletes, the heart that these Fighting Scots displayed during the 2012 season was immeasurable. With the leadership of seniors Kane Crowell, Andrew Jenkins, and Jake Berwind the defense was able to finish first in pass efficiency, total defense, scoring defense, and pass defense. This 2012 defense also garnered eight USA South All-Conference performers, one being Dylan Wolfenbarger who reached second on Maryville College’s All-Time Single Season list with 135 tackles. With the Scots defense establishing favorable field possession throughout the season, the offense was able to utilize sustained drives to eat up the clock and score efficiently. Travis Felder led the USASouth in rushing, helping the Scots to finish third in rushing offense and second in scoring offense. The numbers that this team put up in 2012 only scratched the surface of the Scots’ journey towards the 2012 USA South conference title. Welcoming a collective group of old and new Scots, Rader’s troops are ready to begin the season. With key players returning, this 2013 squad is excited. “I want our players to remain hungry,” Coach Mike Radar said. Coming into his second season as head coach, Rader hopes to instill a sense of family and continual progress towards team goals. “It will take pride in being sound in all three phases of football: offense, defense, and special teams, to achieve our vision of success,” Rader continued.
Offense The Scots offensive attack for the 2013 season will be one to look forward to watching. Coach Shaun Hayes returns for his ninth season on the coaching staff with the Scots. He expects continuous strides to be made within this unit that returns all eleven starters, as well as four all conference performers. “We have several strengths as an offense, but the main component is that these players work well together,” Coach Hayes said about this talented Scots offense. This Scots offense has come together under a family dynamic to explore the potential they possess as a whole unit. The Scots rushing attack for 2013 has potential with seniors Travis Felder and Chad Brooks returning. After having impressive freshman and sophomore campaigns, Felder broke into his own during his junior season, rushing for 910 yards and nine touchdowns earning him AllConference accolades during 2012. With great strength and surprising speed, Felder was able to capitalize on his offensive line’s skills. Chad Brooks, who led the team in touchdowns his freshman season, will compliment Felder in the backfield, while adding his own spin to the 6

position. “Travis and Chad are both team players. They both seem to feed off each other, and success is contagious,” Coach Hayes said about the running back situation. The Scots will look to sophomore quarterback Evan Pittenger to guide them down the field. During his freshman season, Pittenger was able to complement MC’s consistent run game by throwing for 729 yards and seven touchdowns while proving his efficiency with a 53.7 percent completion rate. After receiving significant playing time last year, this young quarterback has the potential to be a leader on and off the field for years to come. An experienced group of receivers will help Pittenger in the pass game. The Scots receivers possess experience and consistency, two crucial aspects of the game when it comes to playing the wide receiver position. Senior Blake Williams returns after having an impressive career for the Scots. Since entering as a freshman in 2010, Williams has stacked up 80 receptions, 904 yards and six touchdowns. Williams is a possession receiver with impressive reach and the potential to break into the open field on any given play. Coming into his junior season, Ed Johnson looks to continue where he left off in 2012. After finishing last season with 33 catches, 457 yards and three touchdowns, Johnson proved that he has the kind of speed it takes to be a reliable receiver in the conference. Junior tight-end Jared Miller will be a reliable target for Pittenger, as well. Miller has put up impressive numbers the past two years and received AllConference honors in 2012. Junior J.T. Ostrowski and sophomore Dalton Graumann also received valuable playing time that will help them to contribute for this receiving core. The offense should be excited to have the entire offensive line returning for the 2013 season. Being anchored by all conference performers Rance Hightower and Dalton Stephens, this offensive line looks forward to the 2013 season. Coming into his junior season, Hightower is ready to continue contributing to this offense after receiving All Conference recognition. Stephens, who is also entering his junior season after being selected for All Conference, hopes to provide continuous momentum for the Scots. Sophomore Connor Benson-Epstein will return as the center for this offensive line. After an impressive freshman outing, Benson-Epstein hopes to provide a burst off the line for the Scots. Tyler Dailey has been a consistent blocker throughout his career and is prepared for the tough defenses throughout the USA-South. “Tyler is a scrapper. When he is in the trenches, it is a fight to the finish,” Coach Hayes said about the returning Scot. Devin Brunsvold also returns for his final season as a Scot. “He has a lot of experience, so we will expect him to fill a leadership role on the offense. Devin is a player that leads by example and works very hard,” Coach Hayes said about the senior Scot. After having an amazing offseason, Brunsvold and his fellow linemen will be prepared for the rigors of a long season in the trenches.
2013 P r e- s e a s on ou t l ook
Defense Second year coach Scott Brumett will be making the calls for the defense in 2013 and he is ready to see this talented Scots defense perform. “I’m excited. Obviously our past success has displayed our potential, but we always have room to improve,” Coach Brumett said. The Scots defense will be in the right mindset to compete in the always tough USA South. The Scots defense returns eight out of eleven starters from 2012. With the loss of a pair of seniors, the secondary will look to junior Zack Brown, sophomore Gabe Johnson and the Rodgers brothers to lead the way in 2013. Zack Brown comes off a season where he finished with 74 tackles, third on the team in 2012. Brown has proved his value, displaying his great catch up ability in coverage and making clutch tackles in the open field. “Zack is a smart player. He knows his checks and is a natural leader in the secondary,” first year secondary/special teams coach, Paul Humphries said. The Rodgers brothers join each other on opposite sides of the field this season. In 2012, sophomore Ruben Rodgers led the team in interceptions while also recording eight broken up passes. Ruben is a quick player, but it is his discipline that will make him a lock down corner in 2013. Junior Kendyhl Rodgers is back at the other corner position after suffering an injury in 2012. He will be ready to perform and make plays for this Scots secondary in 2013. The Rodgers brothers carry the ability to effectively patrol the outside edges of the field. Gabe Johnson also returns after having a stellar year for the Scots in 2012. He recorded 61 tackles along with 2 interceptions to cap off an impressive season. “Gabe is athletic with good size and speed. He’s a smart guy with sound technique,” Coach Humphries said. Johnson, who was named USA South defensive rookie of the year, is a reliable safety who has tremendous catch-up speed as well as the tackling ability of a linebacker. Providing some key depth in the secondary will be senior Daniel Robinson and junior Evan Rogers. The Scots defense will depend on the secondary to make consistent plays in the open field.
Season List) and having one of the best seasons in Scots history, Dylan Wolfenbarger is ready to lead this unit. “The biggest thing about Wolf is that he knows football, and he works hard to get to the ball,” Coach Brumett said about this talented Scot. With a nonstop motor and a great nose for the ball, Wolfenbarger looks to direct this defense. After gaining significant game time experience in 2012, Kent Minor looks forward to step into a full-time role for the Scots defense. Cody Martin also looks forward to filling a linebacker position. Since arriving as a freshman, Martin has displayed his unselfish play and reliability on the field. “We are going to be looking for Cody to step up as a leader and help this defense to be successful,” Coach Brumett stated in regard to this senior Scot. With some added depth from underclassman, the Scots linebackers look forward to making a big impact on the 2013 season. Perhaps the foundation of any good defense is the defensive line, and the Scots hope to hold their ground in the trenches this season. Jamie Owen returns for his final season as a Scot. The 2011 All-Conference performer was sidelined last year, but is ready to display his tenacity for one more campaign. After stepping into a lead role early in his career, Owen has proved himself by displaying his love for the game through his play. After receiving an All-Conference Honorable Mention, sophomore Zach Capehart is ready to excel in the orange and garnet for another year with the Scots. “He has been a solid rock for us, and we are looking for good things out of Zach in 2013,” Coach Brumett said. Junior Tyler Todd also returns to the Scots defensive line. After earning a spot on the D-line, Todd showed why he is a vital part of this defense. Junior Josh Krebs is also coming off of a great season in which he was able to garner All-Conference recognition. After recording 66 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2012, Krebs is set to play a key role in 2013.
The Scots linebackers are always working hard to become sound in their fundamentals. Although the Scots lost a reliable senior graduate, the second line of defense is ready to display their talents on Honaker field and beyond. Special Teams Coach Paul Humphries will take over the special teams in 2013 after coaching the defensive backs at Morehead State University for six years. The importance of special teams weighs just as much as the offense or defense. First year special teams coordinator Paul Humphries would agree. “I think with special teams we are looking for the next step up,” Coach Humphries said. When special teams units are making big plays, it has the ability to take and control the momentum of the game. The punter and kicker positions will be an open competition among players, and will most likely be filled by an incoming recruit. The quick and agile wide receiver Ed Johnson will take over the return duties after ending the season averaging 19 yards a kick return. Johnson provides a burst on special teams that sets the Scots up with good field position. “The return game is a big part of special teams, a lot of responsibility, so the returner must be aware and reliable,” Coach Humphries continued. The biggest aspect of special teams is preparation, and Coach Humphries has a grasp of what it takes to have a successful special teams unit.
It is hard to not be excited for the 2013 season. The key for this team is continual progress. “My first thought as a competitor is I want to win the USA South title outright,” Head Coach Mike Radar said regarding the upcoming season. “Each day is a process of building on a strong foundation of fundamentals and humility. We will succeed only if we play as a collective unit.” With only four home games this season, the Scots will have to take on the role of road warriors. The early out of conference play should prepare the Scots for the tough road ahead. MC will challenge Berry College as the Vikings kickoff their inaugural collegiate season. Long-time rivals Emory and Henry followed by Sewanee will complete MC’s nonconference matchups. Since 1915, Maryville College and Emory and Henry have competed in this longstanding rivalry. The instate rivalry with Sewanee dates back even further with their first meeting in 1906. The history and background on these rival-

ries will create an intense game-time atmosphere that should be exciting for fans to watch. The Scots will return from their non-conference play to take on Methodist for a homecoming to remember. Each unit will rely on sound fundamentals and technique to compete in each challenge this fall. The key for these Scots in 2013 is coming together. Coach Radar and his staff will continue to develop their gridiron family with focus on continuous hard work and dedication.

One of the oldest Divison III conferences in the nation, the USA South was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were: Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003 and the first USA South Athletic Conference Championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports.
The conference sponsored athletics programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and women’s lacrosse for total of 14 sports. Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic excellence as well. Student athletes who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale in both academic semesters are named to the Academic All-Conference Team. This group annually averages well over 550 students. Each year, the President’s Cup is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points through the academic year in sports that are sponsored by the USA South. In 2004-05, the President’s Cup was changed to have one winner for men’s sports and one winner for women’s. In 2005-06, the Conference began awarding a men’s, a women’s and an overall President’s Cup. Presently, the Conference features 14 full-members and one affiliate member (Agnes Scott, women’s lacrosse). League membership will increased by two this season (2013-2014) as Covenant and Huntingdon will become league full-members. Complete league information can be found at www.usasouth.net.

M a r y v i l l e C ol l e g e S p or t Fac il i tie s Stadium At the foot of the Smoky Mountains sits the beautiful Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium, home of the Scots of Maryville College. With the generous contributions from alumnus Don Story in 2001, the stadium was completely revamped with a new surface of Bermuda turf. With the stadium holding nearly 3,000 seats, opposing staffs and coaches are comfortably accommodated in the press box which can hold over 20 media representatives from the local area. The stadium has proven to be fan-friendly as well with the stadium seats only feet away from the field. Several new additions have become part of Thornton Stadium including a thorough sprinkler system, new parking lots, goalposts, and scoreboard. In 2002 the stadium was also remodeled to where concession stands, bathrooms and other necessities for fans were more accessible.
Practice Field
The main practice field is conveniently placed right behind the Cooper athletic center which gives players easy access to water, trainers, etc during practice. Also made from Bermuda turf, the field is joined adjacently by two other practice areas for the use of the team.
Locker Rooms Each player on the team is granted their own large oak locker for their use throughout the season. Conveniently placed in the Cooper Athletic center, players have access to trainers, coaching staff, and any other staff in which they may need to contact.
Training Room The training room holds top of the line equipment to reach the needs and wants of players throughout the season. On, Highlanders, down the field, Rolling up a high score! Tear into the end zone, Smashing through that line, Go Scots Go! Send a rousing cheer on high, And our boys will shine. We’re going to fight, fight, fight! We’re going to fight, fight, fight! For good ole Maryville!
