Scott Dunn: Europe Brochure

Page 1

EUROP E

I may be a bit biased being a Brit myself, but I believe that Europe is one of the most unique destinations in the world. The amount of diversity packed into a small space provides endless opportunity for new explorations and experiences. Growing up in the UK and spending summers visiting my grandparents in France, I’m now lucky enough to return to Europe with my own children. Showing them places that are dear to me has become a special tradition. And it’s not just my old stomping grounds we’ve discovered, but also new hidden gems in countries like Spain and Portugal. From active adventurers who dream of hiking in Norway to those looking for a multi-generational getaway to visit bucket list sites like the Colosseum, Europe has a little something for everyone. And, for anyone wondering why Morocco is included in our Europe brochure, it’s not because we have terrible geography! Morocco ties in brilliantly with a trip to Europe and is only a short flight from Spain. I hope this brochure inspires you for your next vacation.

The Greek god Helios was on to something: whitewashed villages, aquamarine seas and ancient temples make up this little slice of heaven. With a coastline that stretches for 10,000 sparkling miles — and fabulous food fresh from the sea — there’s an island, cove or volcanic sand beach to suit every taste. For sheer romance, it’s hard to beat picturesque Santorini with its tiny clifftop blueroofed villages, Mykonos lures starry-eyed jet setters for its beach clubs and nightlife, and lesser-known Zakynthos is a dreamy island where you can swim with sea turtles and join the gentle rhythms of local life. Not to be outdone, mainland Peloponnese is the stuff of myth, where Hercules once roamed, and the first Olympics were held some 2,500 years ago. Authentic villages, remote monasteries, and picnics among ancient ruins make this area a must see. The language may be a mystery, but the allure isn’t. Who doesn’t want to island hop in the birthplace of Western civilization?

Rugged and unspoiled, beautiful and desolate, Iceland boasts three times more sheep than people and twice as much fun than you can imagine. Moss covered lava fields and majestic mountains host an impossibly scenic playground where glacier hiking, bathing in a hidden hot spring, exploring the inside of a volcano or chowing down on lunch inside a lava cave are all in a day’s work. Winter brings nature’s sky show as the Northern Lights dance between the stars and summer boasts midnight sunsets in a land where the landscape is ever changing. There’s not an inch of Iceland that doesn’t harbor a natural wonder. Our guides here are Viking heroes – entertaining, great with kids and grown-ups alike. A hop skip and a jump from the US and the rest of Europe, it’s ideal from four days to a fortnight.

36

WHEN TO GO Don’t be fooled by the name — Iceland is a good deal warmer in the dead of winter than your local ski resort. The best time to see the Northern Lights is from September to April while summer brings the gift of near-permanent daylight. Gulet yacht, Croatia

• Consider exploring by sea. Croatian gulets are luxurious private wooden boats that come complete with skipper and staff to island hop your way through the Adriatic. • Plan ahead. Properties here often have only a handful of rooms, so to get first choice you need to be ahead of the game. • Food is social currency here - take a cooking class with our friend Tatjana in her home, go oyster harvesting or head out honey and olive oil tasting. • Plitvice Lakes National Park features 16 teal green terraced lakes and some 90 waterfalls. Possibly the most stunning park in Europe, we’ll help you visit without the crowds. • Make time for Slovenia: from Ljubljana’s charming old town to the crystalline lakes and mountain pastures of the Julian Alps, complete with wildflowers and grazing cows, it’s a timeless corner of Europe.

MOROCCO

84

Although not within Europe, Morocco’s proximity to Europe means it can easily be added to a European tour or work as a standalone trip. Where east meets west in a riot of color, snow-capped peaks yield to the great dunes of the Sahara, and jostling medinas give way to the quiet peace of orange scented palace courtyards, Morocco is a feast for the curious traveler. From the indulgent pleasures of Marrakech to the medieval labyrinth of the Fes medina, this is where modern meets ancient. Away from the imperial cities, date palm oases stretch as far as the eye can see, Berber villages are full of laughing children and nomadic herders sip mint tea as their camels stand by. Shop for trinkets, cook a tagine, practice yoga on a sacred mountain, get pampered in a hammam, trek the High Atlas, and watch the sunrise over a sea of sand. Utterly exotic and closer than you think, Morocco done well is truly bewitching.

HIGHLIGHTS CHEFCHAOUEN

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

The hidden gem of Morocco, this mystical city sits at the base of the Rif Mountains, tumbling down a hillside in a thousand shades of blue.

Made for trekking, the Atlas are also perfect for gentle walks in the foothills, amid the drift of apple blossoms, stopping in a Berber village for lunch with a local family.

FES A 9th century maze of 9,000 alleys packed with artisans and tanneries, markets full of dates, spices and rugs, Fes defies logic with extravagant palaces, ruined gardens and heaps of history.

MARRAKECH Marrakech, beloved of shoppers, is at once ancient, hip, colorful and chaotic. Visit the Saadian tombs, explore the Jewish Mellah, taste street food and wander around the Jardin Majorelle.

SKOURA Between Marrakech and the Sahara, this oasis is home to stunning kasbahs where caravans laden with spices and gold once took shelter and is surrounded by epic gorges built for adventure.

THE SAHARA THE AGAFAY DESERT This stony swath of sand outside Marrakech is built for fun: ride ATVs and camels and spend a night glamping just a stone’s throw from civilization.

86

Reached by car, camel or helicopter, the vast Sahara rewards the intrepid with luxury desert camps, the ever-changing light on the dunes, sandboarding, and an incomparable blanket of stars.

WHEN TO GO At its best from September to May, spring and fall are perfect with warm days and nights, but the summer months in between are stifling. While the winter nights can be surprisingly cold, days are pleasant and perfectly balmy.

St Anton, Austria 93

HIGHLIGHTS COURCHEVEL 1850 Courchevel is the glamorous heart of Les Trois Vallées in France. Michelin-starred restaurants and swanky clubs are combined with a huge ski area with 375 miles of pistes and 165 lifts.

VAL D’ISÈRE Family-friendly, with slow skiing zones for the little ones and “La Face” (of Olympic downhill fame) for their parents, Val d’Isère is a mix of superb skiing and lively nightlife.

ST ANTON One of Europe’s best ski areas for on- and offpiste fun, St. Anton has an enviable snow record, a fantastic ski school for kids, hearty Tyrolean food, and legendary après-ski.

ZERMATT In the shadow of the Matterhorn, this vast and high altitude ski area offers runs for every ability – including some into neighboring Italy- as well as a lively car-free village full of shops and bars.

94

ST MORITZ Sunny St. Moritz has long attracted the rich and famous, but it’s also a fantastic area for intermediate level enthusiasts.

DOLOMITES The 12 resorts of Italy’s Dolomiti Superski access to almost 750 miles of runs and one ski pass does it all. Tons of groomers and endless variety are complemented by outrageously good food in Italy’s mountain playground.

WHEN TO GO Europe’s ski areas typically open in mid-December and we don’t recommend making the journey any earlier. The highest, like Courchevel 1850 and Val d’Isère in France, and Zermatt in Switzerland, usually have great snow throughout a long season lasting until mid-April. St. Anton in Austria, a skiers paradise, is fantastic from Christmas until early April, while the Italian Dolomites are at their best from January through March.

Dolomites, Italy

• Scott Dunn’s ski chalets are sumptuous, ideally located and come with your own private staff. It’s the ultimate familyfriendly ski vacation. Just pack and go, we’ll do the rest. • Skiing and snowboarding in Europe is as much about the food as the snow. Seriously special gourmet meals at mountain restaurants costs about the same as the standard fare found at many US resorts. • The Dolomites Ski Safari is the ultimate marriage of ski, exploration and great cuisine. On this guided adventure, ski a different area by day and stay in a different mountain retreat every night. • Ski Switzerland by the Glacier Express train, starting in Zermatt and traveling to St. Moritz via Andermatt. It’s a great way to try three of Europe’s best resorts. • Dance on the tables at the Mooserwirt and Krazy Kangaruh in St. Anton before sliding down the mountain when they close. • Courchevel has lots of north facing slopes which means they’re out of the sun and the snow lasts longer.
