Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | holiday 2012
Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

12Ways celebrate TO
the holidays
Holiday Fun in Nashville - Photo by Sara Clifford
By Sherri Dugger
You’ve heard the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” right? But have you heard of the 12 ways to celebrate the holidays in Brown County? We didn’t think so. Here, we’ve combed the county to come up with a dozen ideas for doing the holiday season in style.

Find the perfect gift or stocking stuffer for that No. 1 person in your life at the Brown County Winter Art & Craft Fair, where you’ll find gifts from “baskets to jewelry to pottery to quilting and weaving,” says Cathy Hendrickson, who organizes the event with her husband, Paul. Held Nov. 23 and 24 at the conference center in The Seasons Lodge, the juried fair features the creations of more than 45 local and regional artists and brings in approximately 1,200 patrons each year, Cathy says. “It’s been happening for 28 to 29 years,” she adds. “People know about it.” Sponsored by the Brown County Craft Gallery. Take a zipline adventure (yes, even in the snow); you have two great options for doing so. Brown County is not only beautiful in the fall, but in the winter, too, and Valley Branch Retreat (www.explorebrowncounty.com) and Rawhide Ranch (www. rawhideranchusa.com) both offer packages to get you sightseeing from 20 to 70 feet off the ground. At Rawhide, you can choose a new activity every day of your stay. The Ranch has ziplines, campfires, a fire pit every night, and guests can just stick around and play horseshoes. For $30, each guest gets six rides on various lines. Regardless of which rides you choose, ranchers concentrate on getting their guests to enjoy themselves. Valley Branch Retreat’s eXplore Brown County also offers plenty of zip with its 13 cable rides, including soars through treetops and over a four-acre lake. Owner Gary Bartels says his adventure center is best known for its zipline canopy tours, though guests come to the area in droves for its other offerings as well. Bartels, with the help of sons Christopher and Lance, has spent the past 10 years building eXplore Brown County into what it is today, with its cabin and tent camping accommodations, a large entertainment hall, 60 acres of paintball fields, 30 miles of single- and double-track trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus miles upon miles of trails for all-terrain vehicles.

Pay homage to the many unique log structures found in Brown County by creating your own cabin made of gingerbread for the third annual Gingerbread Log Cabin Competition at the Traditional Arts Building. Approximately 30 houses or cabins made of gingerbread logs are entered each year, says Mary Falker-Howard, organizer of the event. And “all the houses are amazing. The ingenuity and forethought our competitors put into the construction of their houses is incredible.” Entries can be turned in on Nov. 17 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and will be on display for two weeks, between Nov. 18 and Dec. 1, closed Thanksgiving Day. Show is free; competition entry fee is $15. Awards will be given for best of show, adult division, teen division, child division and people’s choice. For more information, call (800) 7533255 or visit www.createitwithgingerbread.com.

Locals and Brown County visitors get their choice to see four holiday productions this season. “BELIEVE: A Brown County Christmas,” which showcases heartwarming Christmas favorites, is being produced at the Palace Theatre of Brown County (812-988-2101; www.palacetheatreobc.com) throughout November and December. The Brown County Playhouse (812-988-6555; www.browncountyplayhouse.org) offers two productions this season with “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” and a holiday music night, where guests can spend an evening with local musicians playing their favorite holiday tunes. If you’d like the King with your Christmas, head to Brown County State Park (877-563-4371; www.abemartin.com) for the Elvis Christmas Show on Dec. 7. Elvis impersonator Bruce Borders and the City Council band perform in Melodeon Hall at the Abe Martin Lodge.

You can buy fudge all over town, yes, but we have five favorites worthy of a mention here. First off, we never take a stroll through downtown Nashville without stopping at the Nashville Candy Store (41 S. Van Buren St., 812-988-8745) in the Heritage Shoppes Mall. There, we can’t resist the red velvet fudge (imagine layers of red velvet and creamy goodness, topped with crumbly chocolate dust) and the delicious mint chocolate swirl. If that’s not enough, we always stop by the Nashville Fudge Kitchen (175 S. Van Buren St., 812-988-0709), where we’re sure to pick up bags of candyflavored popcorn, as well as a quarter-pound or so of our favorite fudges, including delicious persimmon and decadent German chocolate. Last but certainly not least, we swing around the corner just off Van Buren Street to hit The Candy Dish (61 W. Main St., 812-988-7606), where waves of chocolate scents hit you just as soon as you open the front door. There, we grab some black walnut gourmet fudge and consider it a delicious day. The truth is: There are even more fudge purveyors whom we love in Nashville. The hard part is deciding which one to choose.
Winter Wellness Weekend - Photo by Sara Clifford

Warm up from within during the annual Brown County Winter Wellness Weekend, a wellness celebration that includes yoga sessions, health workshops and a 6.25-mile winter hike. The winter wellness weekend includes two days of a la carte events, all held in Brown County State Park, says Lee Edgren, organizer of the “Warm Up From Within” portion of the schedule, which focuses on “nourishing your body and your spirit,” Edgren says. With yoga, creativity and journaling workshops and documentaries on the schedule, the event is designed to offer a “freshness or newness at the beginning of the year,” Edgren explains. “Instead of laying down diet and exercise rules, this is a way of awakening your desire and going ahead with the support of your emotional being, as well as your logical being. It’s a unique event. I’ve looked around, and there’s nothing that I have found like it in the country.” Events take place Jan. 18 to 20. For more information on the schedule, go to www.riverlightyoga.com/winterw2.aspx or call (812) 988-9642.

All aboard the Nashville Express Train! The popular, open-air, motorized tram kicks off the holiday season by offering free, narrated rides from noon to 7 p.m. Nov. 23 and 24. Rides are then offered approximately every 20 minutes from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays during the rest of the holiday season, says Jamie Newton, communications director at the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The train loads and unloads on Main Street, in front of the Mulberry Cottage and For Bare Feet Too stores.

Follow the eight candy-striped light poles, which will lead the way to Santa and Mrs. Claus’s cabin at the corner of Jefferson and Main streets this season. The section of Main Street, from Van Buren to Jefferson streets, will be adorned in peppermint-inspired décor, including rope lights and red ribbon wrapped around the light poles, to set the mood and atmosphere for St. Nick’s guests.

Shopping for a special man in your life? We found at least nine things he’ll love at various shops around town. Pick up a Stetson hat ($34) or a vintage-finish expedition sweater ($72) and choose from a huge array of leather wallets, colognes and even bottles of hot sauce at Male Instinct (69 S. Van Buren St., 812-988-1964). Or stop by the Men’s Toy Shop (60 N. Van Buren St., 812-988-6590) for a wide selection of cigars, pipes and smoking accessories, plus tobacco in flavors like Sweetwater, Village Gold and Moonshine.
12
At $3.99 each, you can choose from at least 10 cookie cutters in various holiday and winter-inspired shapes and sizes at the Nashville General Store and Bakery (118 E. Washington St., 812-988-6362). For your holiday baking, opt for cutters in penguin shapes, as well as trees, holly, snowmen, gingerbread girls and boys, stockings, reindeer, flowers, and—of course—Santa Claus. And might we suggest: While you’re shopping, feed your hunger with a turkey sandwich smothered in the bakery’s specialty cranberry mustard—our tried-and-true favorite sandwich topper.
That’s how many days you’ll have a chance to pack up your wish list and camera and head out to meet Santa this season. But before you go, please note the big change this year: Find Jolly Ol’ St. Nick and Mrs. Claus stationed at the new pavilion at the corner of Jefferson and Main streets, instead of his usual spot from past years at the visitors center. Holiday revelers can stop by the pavilion, which will be decked out in lights and decorations to look like a Brown County cabin, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Visitation days start on Nov. 23 and include Nov. 24 and 25 and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23. Ho! Ho! Ho! On the second Saturday of November and December, 12 galleries, featuring original works of art by local and regional artists, open their doors to participate in the Village Art Walk. Stop by the Brown County Art Gallery, the Art Guild and the Craft Gallery, as well as the Spears Gallery, the Sweetwater Gallery, the Iris Garden and —if you’re in the shopping mood—choose from any number of handcrafted gifts for friends and family on your list. For more information on all of the participating galleries, head to www.villageartwalk.com.

Q&A

By Sherri Lynn Dugger
Christina Rhoads owns C. Dawn Livery, a horse-drawn carriage business that sees lots of business throughout the holiday season. Along with fellow carriage driver Tom Kenyon, Rhoads can be found on any given weekend carrying up to six passengers around town with one of her two horses, Forte and Avalanche. We got a few questions in with Rhoads, who has been offering horse-drawn rides for the past 12 years. Where can someone find you stationed in Brown County? “The corner of Franklin and Van Buren streets, next to the Artists Colony Inn.” What do people see on these carriage rides? “They see first of all the village area, all of the unique shops and buildings, all of the artists out on Saturdays painting. On our longer rides, we also go past the antique log jail.”
28
Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | holiday 2012
How much do rides cost and how long do they last? “We usually go by minutes, which is not the best way to measure them because they may go longer, but we offer a 10-minute, a 20minute and a half-hour ride. They cost $20, $40 and $60 each.” When are rides available? “Typically, and this is very much weatherpermitting, we offer rides Friday through Sunday during the afternoon and evening hours. We try to operate March through Christmas. Sometimes in October, we’re out during the weekdays.” What’s one story you might tell your passengers along the way about something in Nashville? “If we go past the antique log jail, we always point out the very extraordinary two-headed calf that’s up there. That’s a crazy thing that you’ll only see in Nashville. The calf was born in Brown County in the 1950s. Everybody thought it was cool and crazy. When it died and was taxidermied, they put it in the jail. I guess there was nowhere else to stick it.” Any rules for passengers while riding? “We just ask everyone to remain seated while the carriage is moving.” What do people love about the rides? “Two things always amaze people. They love the sound of the horses’ hooves on the pavement. And, second, even a 10-minute carriage ride forces you to sit down and relax. It forces people to enjoy life at a pace that we no longer get to experience in our everyday lives.” For more information, visit www.browncounty carriages.com.

Up to Her Neck
in Art Amy Greely has been drawn to arts and crafts since she was a little girl—“It’s even written in my baby book,” she says—but it took decades before she found her calling as an Indiana artisan. “I come from a family of engineers,” she explains, and, as such, Greely made her way to Purdue submitted photo of Amy greely University to study. But the college known for its engineering and science instruction wasn’t the best fit for the creative co-ed. She eventually transferred to Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. There, Greely studied sculpture but still hadn’t made “the connection” to becoming an artist. After college, she entered the business world. It wasn’t until the late 1990s, when Greely moved with her husband to Brown County and she decided to take a jewelry-making class in Nashville, that she rediscovered her love of art. She decided to return to school, this time at Indiana University in Bloomington, where she studied metalsmithing. From that day on, Greely says she has been “serious about” making jewelry.

The artist and nature lover eventually opened her own retail space and studio in Nashville, just steps off the small main business corridor. From her studio, Greely creates handmade “sculptures to wear,” and she thinks of each piece, made from sterling silver, gold or copper, as tiny works of art. Her typical customer, Greely has found, is “a woman from 40 to 70 years old who is kind of ignored by the fashion industry,” she explains. “There are not a lot of options for them to create their own style.” Greely, then, supplies her customers with wearable works that juxtapose earthy metals with floral images of the natural world. Her pieces, she says, are celebrated by middle-age women “having a blast” at creating their own style. While crafting jewelry, Greely says, she is influenced by trends, “but not like a 19-year-old would be. My customers appreciate the acknowledgment of a trend but not the copying of it.” In the end, Greely, too, is “having a blast,” she explains. “I am one of those people who feel so lucky to have found what their passion is. That’s rare.” For more information on Amy Greely, visit www.amygreely.com or call (812) 988-1058.

THE DOGS
If you’re holiday shopping in Brown County, don’t forget the four-legged friends on your list By Sherri Lynn Dugger
a s’more treat for sale at Bone appetit.
When Susan Rice and her husband, Gary, opened an all-natural and gourmet dog treat shop, Bone Appetit, in Nashville in 1997, they were years ahead of the pet boutique trend. And opening a dog treat shop was a big departure for Susan, who had owned and operated a post-secondary travel school and a

travel agency for more than 10 years when she decided to open a third business. Susan went into the dog business because “I have always loved dogs, and the idea of providing healthful and nutritious treats was very appealing,” she says. “It also sounded like a fun way to interact with dogs and the people who love them.” Susan had also long harbored a love of Nashville, and so when she decided to open her shop, she headed for Brown County to do it. Located at 211 S. Van Buren St., Bone Appetit Bakery now offers locals and Nashville guests more than 20 varieties of treats to purchase, available with “all kinds of premium ingredients,” Susan says. “Customers can get wheat-free, grain-free, soy-free, and fancier treats for the holidays, treats iced with carob and yogurt and things.”
“I have always loved dogs, and the idea of providing healthful and nutritious treats was very appealing.”

And the offerings sound doggone good. “We have Woofles, which are chicken-flavored waffles,” Susan says, “as well as Betty Crocker brownies, marshmallow carrot cakes, and crème brûlée.” Customers can purchase individual treats or choose from some of the store’s bulk offerings, which come in peanut butter and honey or cheddar cheese and bacon flavors, she says. The shop also offers a number of pet accessories, like dog bowls, coffee mugs, T-shirts for people and dogs, and pet carriers. Dogs are welcome in the small, approximately 300-squarefoot store, and every dog that visits gets its picture taken for photo collages on the walls. “We have thousands of dogs displayed,” Susan says. “People love those pictures.” The owner of a 5-year-old yellow Lab, Colby, who sometimes also visits the store, Susan is now in the dog business full time. the events on Sept. 11, 2001, Susan decided to close up shop on her other ventures. Now, her focus is on the dogs—and what they eat. It’s a focus that has brought her a great deal of satisfaction over the years, she says. “It’s really great to meet so many people who have an interest in the health and welfare of their pets and take such wonderful care of them.” Bone Appetit Bakery, 211 S.
