Your Dream Home Just Got Better! 10 HomeAltering Trends When shopping for your dream home, don’t forget to tap your imagination! When you buy a home, whether big or small, you want to put your design stamp on it and make it into something swoonworthy. Everyone wants to live in a comfortable place, and even a first home can be a dream home if you love it. There are so many things to consider when buying a home: school district, home value, location, distance to work and family. Sometimes the design aspect falls to the wayside. A REALTOR® can definitely help. They know all the ins and outs of home value and can help you find a diamond in the rough. But where do you even begin to put your stamp on a home? Just like a new pair of shoes can make an outfit, there are small ways to turn a house into a spectacular home. As you walk through your next potential home or your current one, think about these design ideas and hot decor trends so you can transform it into something that truly is dreamy. #1 PATTERNED TILE Patterned tile is hot, hot, hot right now. We love the fact that monochromatic tile is just as popular as colorful mosaics. Think about ways to put it on the floor or on the wall. The options are endless. Think of using it to make little splashes – even on a small bathroom floor or to accent an area of your backsplash. #2 SHIPLAP Wood walls, planked walls, shiplap … doesn’t matter what you call it … it’s a definite do. You want to look for spaces that can handle additional texture or subtle design, like the kitchen or the living room. Since this is a super versatile trend, it definitely has staying power. Paint it white for a more subdued look, or leave the wood look for loads of pop. #3 GRAY PAINT Warm, gray color schemes are the new neutral. Grays are way better than the beiges of yesteryear. Rather than blueish grays, which feel sterile, try warm grays or even griege to make your home feel fresh without making things feel too stark. Gray color schemes can be accented with gold or oil-rubbed bronze finishes. #4 BRICK ACCENT WALLS If shiplap isn’t your thing, consider introducing brick into your space. There are lots of ways to get a brick look without hiring a mason. There are brick-patterned panels available at most home improvement stores that you can attach to the wall, like plywood. Or you can do brick veneers or even brick wallpaper (as shown above). My favorite brick accents are whitewashed brick and the German smear look, which involves smearing mortar on brick to give the brick a distressed feel. #5 WALLPAPER Wallpaper is a surefire way to spruce up any space. It had a bad rep, but now it’s way easier to shop for, hang, and remove than the wallpaper of the ‘80s. Buy removable wallpaper (or paint) to change a room instantly. It’s also great for rooms that are transitional. For instance, your bright, vibrant playroom might later turn into a neutral homework room. #6 TUFTED VELVET Nothing feels more luxurious than tufted velvet. It immediately makes any space more chic, inviting, and rich. Use it on a variety of surfaces – headboards, couches, chairs, or even accent pillows – if you want to “try it on” before splurging on a bigger piece. I especially like it on headboards and the backs of barstools because the vertical orientation makes the fabric easier to keep clean. #7 WATERFALL COUNTERS A big trend in kitchens right now is waterfall countertops. With this high-end detail, the countertop is extended vertically down to the floor, creating a waterfall effect. It requires extra countertop material – and costs more than a top-only countertop – but creates a very chic and tailored look that’s great in bathrooms, kitchens, and even laundry rooms. The best materials for this feature are stone, butcher block, or concrete. #8 LIGHT ASH FLOORS Ten years ago, floors were solidly in the dark, rich brown camp, but that’s changing. More homes are seeing lighter floors with less yellow or orange undertones and they look SO GOOD.
12
The best part is you can achieve this look on your existing hardwoods with the right stain and proper refinishing techniques. If your dream house has hardwoods that don’t match your dreams of ashy floors, contact a floor refinishing company to see what they can do. #9 LIVE-EDGE TABLES What is a live-edge table? It’s a table with its original edge details; it hasn’t been squared off, so it has wavy edges and cracks and provides a unique look. Some wood artisans can recreate a live-edge look even if it isn’t legit. But picking out your wood slab before having your table crafted can ensure that your carpenter is making a true live-edge table for you. This small detail works really well with industrial decor as well as rustic styles. #10 BLACK TRIMWORK White and wood trim aren’t going anywhere, but black trim on windows, doors, and ceilings is making a big splash in the design world. It’s a very high-contrast look that gives a strong presence to woodwork, which normally plays second fiddle. If you have a space that needs a little boost and you aren’t afraid of contrast, this might be the inexpensive upgrade for you. I think it looks amazing with lots of windows and doors and makes spaces really pop. In the end, it’s important to feel at home in your space. I know it’s taken us a long time, but we’re finally getting a hold of our home and making it ours. So we know it’s possible! This article was contributed by Katie and Jeremy Bower, home and lifestyle bloggers for “Bower Power.” They spend every waking minute loving to create, improving homes, and teaching their four little boys (all ages six and under!) how to laugh, love, and learn. Who’s Got Your Back When Your Credit Report is Wrong? With some credit report errors not getting fixed by either the credit reporting bureau or credit card companies, at least you have the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in your corner.
When you find an error in your credit report and send the credit bureau proof that your creditor was wrong when it said you paid late, didn’t pay at all, or, worse yet, are deceased, you expect the bureau and your creditor to do the right thing. Like acknowledge the error and correct your credit report to show you paid on time, paid off your debts, or are still alive. And yet, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently had to tell the credit bureaus (and the companies that report your payment record to the bureaus) to pay attention to your complaints and take more care investigating your disputes. It’s like the Department of Transportation having to order school bus drivers to use the brakes to stop their buses. HOW ERRORS GET PERPETUATED Keeping track of your payment history is the credit bureau’s job. Nevertheless, a 2012 Federal Trade Commission report found 20% of consumers had errors in their credit report. And about 5% of consumers had errors in their credit report that could affect the likelihood of receiving credit or the terms of credit received. To do their job right, the credit bureaus have to get accurate information each month from the companies that report data to them — parties like credit card issuers, mortgage lenders, auto loan companies, and student loan lenders. When you tell a credit reporting bureau there’s an error in your report, the bureau contacts the company that furnished the information about you. You’d think the bureau would pass along whatever documents and proof you have to show you paid on time. Not so much. In the past, they’ve simply boiled down your issue into a data code and sent that, not your proof (a letter explaining the issue, supporting documents) to the data furnisher. Evidence is important in establishing that the data furnisher made an error. That’s why the CFPB stepped in and told the credit bureaus they need to pass along the evidence that supports your dispute. Regardless of whether they see your proof, credit furnishers sometimes respond to an error report by simply deleting the disputed account, the CFPB said. That’s not good for you because the furnisher isn’t: • Correcting your information, or • Telling the other two credit reporting companies (there are three big ones) that it made a mistake in the information it provided about you. Here’s an example of how this might work: Suppose you have an auto loan that you paid on time every month for 60 months. But the auto loan company says once you paid 90 days late. You dispute, and the auto lender removes your account from the data it reports to the credit bureaus. Now, you don’t have the late payment report on your record, but you also don’t have the 60 months of on-time payments either. A mortgage lender pulling your credit report, for instance, won’t see that positive payment history, so your credit rating might decline just when you’re trying to get a home loan or refi. CATCH CREDIT REPORT ERRORS EARLY In a related move, the CFPB also suggested credit card companies follow the example set by Discover, Barclaycard, and First Bankcard and start showing consumers the credit scores they use to set the rates their customers pay. Discover shows credit scores on customers’ monthly statements. Barclaycard and First Bankcard give customers free access to their scores via a website. The CFPB is asking for credit score disclosure because it wants you to pay closer attention to your credit standing. “Consumers often learn the importance of their credit standing when it is too late — after a credit application is denied or identity theft has occurred,” CFPB Director Richard Cordray said in a letter to credit card companies. “Sometimes they fail to see the importance of their credit standing even if it has affected them in material ways, such as being rejected for a job or charged a higher price for a loan.” HOW DO I GET ERRORS FIXED? It’s up to you to guard your credit. The first step is checking to see what’s in your credit report. You can get one free credit report from each of the three bureaus once a year. Then, if you find mistakes, get to work trying to correct them. If the credit bureau doesn’t fix the error, complain to the CFPB. You can: • File your complaint online • Call the toll-free phone number at 855/411-CFPB (2372) or TTY/TDD phone number at 855/729-CFPB (2372) • Fax the CFPB at 855/237-2392 • Mail a letter to: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, P.O. Box 4503, Iowa City, Iowa 52244 The CFPB will give you a confirmation number immediately, email updates along the way, and you’ll be able to check the progress of your case online. If you need to fix an error, you’ve got a lot of company. Between Oct. 22, 2012, and Feb. 1, 2014, roughly 31,000 consumers complained to the CFPB about credit report problems, the agency says. About three-quarters of those complaints came from consumers who had trouble fixing a credit report mistake. DONA DEZUBE has been writing about real estate for more than two decades. The tip about coffee mugs? We’ve all been there. BY JAMIE WIEBE Did you ever notice that your self-improvement pacts with yourself are action oriented? Walk 10,000 steps a day. Fix that leaky faucet. Register for VolunteerMatch. But “get organized”? It’s a goal so broad that just trying to figure out what action to take makes you wonder what you were thinking in the first place. It’s like you need an organizing plan for your organizing. Ta da! Here it is. Follow these steps, spending less than an hour day (sometimes just a few moments), to a better organized home: 1. DO THAT PROJECT “What about your space is making you feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?” asks Amy Trager, a professional organizer in Chicago. Is it the paperwork disaster in your office? The pile of clothes teetering on your dresser? Or that mess that surrounds your doorway? Start with what’s annoying you, she says. One hour on that task will get your organizing engine revving. 2. CREATE A "GO AWAY" BOX Put anything you’re planning to donate in it (or give to a friend, or take to recycle). And keep it by the door so you can easily grab it when you’re leaving. 3. DEAL WITH THE DECORATIONS Hallelujah — the holidays are over! When you’re putting away your décor, donate anything you didn’t bring out last season, and separate decorations by holiday. No need to dig through your St. Patty’s clovers when you’re searching for a menorah. 4. CREATE A SYSTEM FOR YOUR ENTRYWAY Set up a “command center” so your front door doesn’t become a lawless accessories arena, especially during winter months. Add hooks for coats, bins for shoes, and a mail sorter if you need it. (Remember to keep a place for your “go away” box). 5. WRANGLE YOUR PET SUPPLIES
cuisine, or by brand — whatever makes them easier to find when you’re in the middle of your noodle stir fry. 7. PARE DOWN YOUR UTENSILS You’ve accumulated several dozen kitchen utensils in your culinary career: can openers, microplanes, four (what?!) wine openers. Pare down the collection and use drawer dividers to keep the remainders in order. 8. RECONFIGURE YOUR POTS AND PANS Stop digging around in your shelves for the oversized, cast-iron skillet. Donate the pots and pans you hardly use, and install cupboard organizers to help manage the rest. 9. THROW AWAY EXPIRED FOODS You never use Worcestershire sauce — except that one time. Go through your refrigerator and pantry and ditch or donate anything past its prime. 10. STACK YOUR PANTRY STAPLES Make better use of your pantry by sorting through your staple dry goods — think flour, sugar, pasta, oatmeal, dry beans — and putting them in airtight, stackable containers. You’ll free up a ton of space, too. 11. DOWNSIZE YOUR KITCHEN GADGETS You had noble intentions when you purchased that spiralizer. (Zucchini noodles every night, right?) Give those space hogs to someone else with lofty dreams. 12. SAY NO TO COFFEE MUG OVER-SATURATION Every time you lose a sock, a new coffee mug appears. Keep one or two mugs for every coffee or tea drinker, and donate the rest. 13. SORT YOUR FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS No singles allowed. Toss any tops or bottoms that have no mates. 14. REASSESS YOUR DISPLAY SHELVES
Minimize the time spent scrambling when your pup is desperate for a walk or eager for a meal. Hang hooks and cubbies near the door and keep leashes, kibble, bowls, and toys in one convenient spot.
Shelves crammed with knickknacks, books you’ll never read, and stuff you somehow accumulated are just a waste of space. Donate books to the library, discard the junk, and arrange what’s left in a way that pleases you.
6. ORGANIZE YOUR SPICES
15. DEAL WITH YOUR CABLES
Arrange your herbs and spices alphabetically, by
With a Roku, PlayStation, DVD player, and a cable

HOME finder.org Feature 24. TACKLE UNDER-THE-SINK STORAGE
box, it’s no surprise your entertainment center is a mess. Create ID tags for each plug from bread tags or cable ties, and bundle the clutter together with velcro strips.
Clean everything out. You’ll be amazed at what you find (like those Magic Erasers you could never find). Then put back everything you’re keeping in bins you can easily pull out so nothing gets lost again.
16. PUT CLOTHES ON NEW HANGERS
25. HANG A SHELF
Switch your clothes over to the slimmer, grabbier hangers. They use less space and keep your clothes from sliding down to your closet floor. As you do this, discard the clothes you never wear.
Wall storage is so often overlooked. Find a spot in your home where a shelf would solve a problem, and hang it. Maybe it’s for some toiletries in the bathroom, or laundry supplies, or for your kid’s stuffed toys.
17. CORRAL YOUR ACCESSORIES
26. REDUCE YOUR TOWELS AND LINENS
Belts, scarves, purses, hats — all the accessories that don’t have a drawer or spot in the closet can end up everywhere. Buy an accessories hanger or install a simple series of hooks to give your wardrobe’s smallest members a home.
There are the towels you use — and the stack of towels you never use. Donate them to the animal shelter. Those torn pillowcases? Convert to rags or toss. Same for napkins, dishtowels, pot holders, etc.
18. PURGE UNDER THE BED
27. HANG A SHOE ORGANIZER
Under-bed storage is ideal for out-of-season clothing. But when out-of-season becomes out-of-sight and out-of-mind, clear out those clothes you’ll never wear again from this precious storage space.
Hanging shoe organizers can solve a ton of storage problems beyond the obvious. They can store scarves, mittens, cleaning supplies, craft supplies. You can even cut them to custom-fit inside a cabinet door.
19. DECLUTTER YOUR DESK
28. ORGANIZE YOUR JUNK DRAWER FOR GOOD
When your workspace is swimming with collectibles, staplers, Post-its, and more, paring down can keep you focused when it’s time to hunker down.
There’s no shame in a junk drawer — but why not organize it? Dump the whole thing on one surface and sort everything into piles. Use drawer dividers to keep each pile in its own space.
20. SHRED OLD PAPERWORK
29. STORE YOUR TOOLS THE RIGHT WAY
Not every form, statement, and tax record needs to stay in your filing cabinet forever. Check out “How Long to Keep Your Tax Records” to make sure you’re not wasting space. Shred the rest to ward off identity thieves.
Finding the right Phillips-head screwdriver to put together that cute IKEA bookshelf shouldn’t be so hard. Track down your hammers and screwdrivers, and arrange them in one easy-to-access spot, such as a pegboard.
21. TIDY YOUR FILES
30. PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
Now that you’ve shredded the paperwork you don’t need, tidy up your files by organizing them and labeling them clearly. Colorful folders can help organize by theme (home stuff, tax stuff, work stuff, etc.). 22. GET RID OF MYSTERY ELECTRONICS
See how much you’ve accomplished! Take a look around your newly organized home, making note of any spaces you missed. Then dream a bit about your next home project. Maybe paint that dining room, finally?
Admit it. You’ve got a drawer where black mystery cords, chargers, and oddball electronic bits go to die. Free that drawer up for better uses, or at least get rid of the ones you know for sure are “dead.”

Why You Probably Won’t Avoid Seller’s Remorse (But That’s Ok!) Thinking of selling your home and worried you’ll regret it? Here’s how to cope. Selling your house can be scary: It’s been your home, where you’ve lived and made memories. Chances are good it’s your most important asset and your biggest investment so far. Wrestling with the emotional heft of putting your home on the market is a difficult byproduct of real estate — but once a closing date has been set, the hard work is done. Right? Actually, it’s not uncommon for sellers to feel pangs of regret when a buyer gets serious. If you’re feeling remorse for your soon-to-be-former home, don’t panic: You’re far from alone. “When you’re selling a house, you’re not selling an object,” says Bill Primavera, a REALTOR® in Westchester County, N.Y., and “The Home Guru” blogger. “A house provides shelter and is probably the biggest thing we ever acquire, so it has a bigger impact on our life.” THE ORIGINS OF SELLER'S REMORSE Moving is one of life’s biggest stressors. According to Daryl Cioffi, a Rhode Island counselor and co-owner of Polaris Counseling & Consulting, it’s one of the biggest instigators for depression. “There’s a lot of latent stuff that happens when change occurs,” Cioffi says. Are you feeling insecure? Are you wondering if you made the right decision? Those feelings are normal reactions to change — but when they get tangled up with the sale of your biggest investment, they can be downright terrifying. Here are some things you can do to help you manage the emotional roller coaster that comes with selling your home: DO THE EMOTIONAL WORK BEFOREHAND Doing the emotional work before it’s time to sell is the best way to avoid regret. “Look at the flaws of what makes it not the perfect home for you,” Cioffi says. Is it just too small for your family? Does your Great Dane need a bigger backyard? Ask yourself, “How can I close this chapter?” That doesn’t mean you have to develop negative feelings toward your current home. You’re just trying to remind yourself of why you decided to move on. “Begin the detachment process by saying: ‘This works for me now, but it won’t work for me forever,’” Cioffi says. Once you’ve processed your reasons for selling the home, give yourself space to grieve the house you’ve loved and the memories you’ve made inside its walls. It’s OK to be sad you’ll never step inside your child’s first bedroom again; conversely, that’s not a reason to stay in a home forever. You can even have fun with your grief. Why not acknowledge your feelings by throwing a goodbye party for your house? FOCUS ON THE FUTURE Working through your feelings early will make the selling process smoother, but even if you spent time grieving before putting your home on the market, it’s still normal to feel some pangs of sadness during closing. While it’s easy to tell yourself you’re overreacting, getting past remorse isn’t a simple process. How can you do it? Say goodbye to your old home and prepare yourself for what’s next. If you’re still feeling remorse after the sale has gone through, don’t overthink it: Even if you did make the wrong decision — and chances are good you didn’t — it doesn’t matter. The deed is, quite literally, done. The next step is distraction. If you’ve already moved into your new home, throw yourself into fixing it up. Redo the shelving in the kitchen. Start a garden. Primavera recommends taking your mind off of homes completely by picking up a new hobby or exploring your new neighborhood to find fun activities, like yoga or pottery classes. “Keep your mind focused on what’s ahead,” says Cioffi. “The fact is, it’s done. Now what? Look forward and focus on how you can make this new place something to be excited about.” If you’re still having problems adjusting to your new life, your old home might just be a stand-in for bigger problems: Perhaps a depression worsened by moving, or it has triggered anxiety about your life in general. A long-term struggle to resolve your grief indicates you should speak with a professional counselor about your situation. Cioffi says a good therapist will help you answer the questions, “What’s going on that you can’t let go?” and “What’s keeping you from moving forward?” No matter how deep your seller’s remorse may be, uncovering the reasons behind it and focusing on the future are the best ways to let go of the stress of leaving a former home behind. Give yourself time to get used to the change and focus on creating new memories. After all, the happy life you had in the home you sold was the reason you loved it so much. Someday, with a new set of memories made, you’ll love your new home just as deeply. JAMIE WIEBE is a writer and editor with a focus on home improvement and design.
