7 Genius Entryway Storage Ideas to Get You Out the Door Faster Creating personalized bins is a good start. It’s so easy (and so unfair) how quickly your entryway can go from clean to chaos — and that chaos makes trying to get out the door brutal. Think of all that time wasted hunting for your keys and umbrella, or digging through a pile of coats to find the one you need. Five minutes spent searching for stuff each morning becomes 35 minutes a week, or more than 30 hours a year! Corralling your clutter can feel overwhelming, but with the right mindset and a few clever hacks, your entryway can be what helps you get out of the house on time — not what slows you down. Here are seven ideas to help you out: #1 PERSONALIZE BUCKETS How do those hats and gloves end up all over the entryway? Half the time, it happens when someone tosses them aside while searching for their own stuff. That’s why separating each person’s storage space is so ingenious. “Susie has her own basket, Tommy has his own basket,” says professional organizer Yve Irish. Assigning space and responsibility to each individual family member saves you — and your kids — time digging through other people’s belongings. You don’t need a huge closet to do this — even little baskets in an inexpensive Ikea shelving unit can do the trick. Irish recommends pairing a storage system with training to make personalized buckets work: “Teach your children to return items to their basket when they come home,” she says. “You want to make sure that happens and they get into the habit.” #2 HANG YOUR PURSES AND BAGS Digging through a forest of coats to find the right purse for your outfit is a hassle. It’s also not great to shove your bags onto a cluttered closet shelf or (ugh) pile them on the floor — a practice some believe is bad luck. There’s a feng shui saying, “A purse on the floor is money out the door.” So hang your bags from the closet rod using S-hooks instead. Lacking a closet? If your walls are less than five feet apart, you can install a tension rod between them. Or choose a decorative wall shelf with hooks. No matter how you hang them, do a purse purge first to avoid creating a handbag jungle. Keep that oversized bag you only pull out for special occasions tucked out of the way. #3 CREATE A CHARGING STATION While you might charge your primary smartphone overnight by your bedside, creating a charging station in your entryway can save valuable time, especially if you have a work phone or use the kids’ tablets for car rides. When they’re always charging in the same spot, you won’t waste time in the morning hunting down chargers. Assemble tech storage using assigned baskets with neatly-organized cords, or go big with a built-in. At organization blog “A Bowl Full of Lemons,” a cabinet with plugs inside was installed in the mudroom to serve as a neat home for laptops, tablets, and smartphones, which all charge up inside. #4 INSTALL AN INFORMATION STATION Papers can be pernicious devils, accumulating in ugly piles, blocking surfaces, and creating stress. Cut off the problem at its head with an information station, starting with a customized paper organizer on the wall. “We had an extreme amount of clutter,” says Aniko Levai, the blogger behind “Place of My Taste.” As part of a grand entryway remodel, she created a wall organizer to keep papers and small items out of the way. The process is simple enough for even the newest DIYer. Levai created the organizer by combining painted wood, fabric, a few small hooks, and a $15 wall magazine rack from Ikea. But not all paper needs to be saved, and mail-sorting procrastination is the stuff cluttered entryways are made of. Setting up your recycling center near your entryway — in the closet or a free corner — can turn paper sorting into a quick, easy to-do task every time you walk in the door. If you have the space, add a shredder into the mix or add a whiteboard for reminders. #5 ADD LOTS

SHOE STORAGE
Step into any big box home store and you’ll find two dozen shoe storage options, from stackable organizers to hanging canvas cubbies. The perfect option for you is a matter of taste and space, but let’s be serious: However many shoe cubbies you think your family should need, the truth is probably three times that amount. That’s why we’re partial to this clever solution from Sara Davis, who transformed an old wooden mail sorter — found at a local antique shop — into a gorgeous, 45-slot shoe cubby.

While antique mail sorters may not be available everywhere, you can create your own by converting a bookshelf or cabinet, bundling cut PVC piping into handmade cubbies, or buying a large shoe cubby. Davis’ solution is perfect for her long, thin mudroom, which is 17 feet long, but only five feet wide. “It’s hard to miss, so it’s a great reminder for the kids to take off their shoes,” Davis says. #6 ASSIGN LOCKERS Industrial-style decor is in — take advantage of the trend in your entryway by installing lockers. (Yes, we mean the aluminum models your kids use at school.) While not ideal for a super-small entryway, lockers can instantly triple your storage space if you have the room, as each one has hooks on three surfaces, as well as shelving. Even better, install short tension rods and use S-hooks for even more hanging storage. And they provide plenty of room for creative decoration. You can paint them to match a variety of decor. #7 MAKE A STATION

Your entryway is always one of the first victims of nasty weather. Is it a rainy autumn? Say hello to a puddle of dirty leaves. Winter? Snow boots can leave the entire room soaking and soiled. Weather-safe storage solutions can be the key difference between an unorganized mess and a pristine entryway. The biggest culprit is shoes. While a mat can go a long way toward preserving the cleanliness of your entrance, you’ll need to develop a plan for storing boots — without them dripping everywhere. Try this DIY solution: Line the bottom of a chest with a mud tray, and then fill the tray with a layer of river rocks. The rocks allow the water to drain away from the soggy boots so they’ll be ready to use the next morning — and the whole process is hidden away inside the chest. It’s a roomy 10-foot beauty, so you can seat a houseful of guests without dragging chairs all over the place. And (bonus!) there’s storage underneath for stashing lots of stuff out of sight. You can custom-create your own for about $250 if you’ve got a few essential DIY tools. Or you can do an Ikea hack to get the same result. Just attach one of their long, horizontal storage systems to your walls. Then add cushions and preformed molding for the same custom look. #2 MIRACLE MAKEOVER WITH JUST PAINT, STAIN (AND PATIENCE) “The Brady Bunch”-orange wall and abused floors in the before photo are homely enough to strike you blind. But what a miracle paint, sanding, and stain can do! Lighter shades on the walls, trim, and floor reflect natural light, making the space so much brighter. And for very little money (about $150). The key to such an amazing transformation, Kingery says, is to be a tortoise, not a hare. Sanding, taping, patching holes, and waiting on stain, paint or polyurethane to dry takes care and patience if you want professional-looking results. “The big reveal doesn’t happen overnight, and a renovation almost always looks worse before it looks better.” #3 INSTANT OPEN FLOOR PLAN Cramped, dark kitchens are so very 1981. Sarah Lemp of the “All Things With Purpose” blog turned her dated kitchen into an open, light-filled space that feels and functions like a larger room. The cost? $300. Yep. For less than the cost of a set of countertop canisters at Williams Sonoma, Lemp worked magic. The biggest fix? She just removed a set of overhead cabinets that blocked light and the view into the dining area, making an instant open floor plan. Then she turned to paint, the budget remodeler’s friend. She used a soft griege (designer-speak for grayish beige) for the walls of the kitchen and dining area. She painted the remaining upper cabinets white, and the bottom ones dark gray. “I love the look of white cabinets, but figured a darker color was more kid-friendly,” she says. Lemp skipped the requisite subway tile backsplash and went with peel-and-stick shiplap instead. “It was easier and cheaper,” she says. #4 BRIGHTER BEDROOM WITH PAINT AND WOOD This may be an ugly room, but we’re not sure because it’s so dark all we can see are cheap blinds and a poofy valance that hasn’t been fashionable since the Olsen twins were toddlers.

It needed major help. Ashley Rose and Jared Smith of the blog “Sugar and Cloth” pulled off a weekend makeover by painting the walls a lighter color and replacing the window treatments with wispy, white drapes that practically pull sunlight into the room. A pair of wall-mounted reading lamps added a second layer of light, because a lonely overhead fixture can’t light the whole room all by itself. And that wall behind the bed? It’s strips of reclaimed wood with an adhesive backing. Peel, stick, and you’re done. No nails. No glue. And just one tool: a level to make sure you stick the wood strips in a straight line. Awesome. #5 AN EASY-PEASY BACKYARD PATIO Dirt’s ugly. It’s also a pain, turning into mud when it rains, dust when it doesn’t, and sneaking into your house on the feet of dogs and kids. Covering it with a paver patio is a great fix. Chelsea Foy of the blog “Lovely Indeed” built this one in a neglected flower bed in just 10 hours. She used patio stones molded to look like several individual bricks, because leveling one large stone is tons easier than leveling a bunch of bricks. Those arcs of large river rocks just off the patio make a natural-looking transition between the factory-perfect pavers and the rest of the yard. They’ll also give you less lawn to mow or flowers to tend. #6 FANCY WALL MOLDING FOR A BARGAIN PRICE Wall molding makes a room look so custom, so finished, so much better than boring old drywall. But it costs around $25 a square foot just for the materials. Mysha Barton of the blog “Remington Avenue” pulled it off along her stairs for just $30 — total. The secret? She used MDF (medium density fiberboard, aka fake wood) to keep it cheap, and didn’t mount it in the traditional way with board panels on the wall. Instead, she put thinner “chair rail molding” directly on the wall, and painted everything white, including the wall to get that rich look of molding. The toughest part was cutting all those angles, Barton says. She got it done with a miter box and a handsaw. “My advice is to use scrap wood to practice your angled cuts before taking on your expensive molding pieces.” Barton did this project in just eight hours with three small children in the house, so even if 10th-grade geometry made you cry, you can do this. #7 A SPACE-SAVING WORKBENCH A DIY workbench is a gateway project, one that can lead you to harder projects and possibly, a home improvement addiction. Make this workbench your very first project and you’ll have room to do scads of projects — money-saving ones. It’ll fit in a small space because it’s actually a door mounted on door hinges, so you can fold it flat against the wall when you’re not using it. Paint isn’t just for walls. Here’s how to breathe new life into old stuff. 1. Lightly sand away any loose bits of brick or mortar with 120-grit sandpaper.
By: LISA KAPLAN GORDON Basically, if it doesn’t move, you can paint it. But only after you’ve paid special attention to prep — cleaning, patching, and sanding (generally) the area.
2. Clean dirt and soot with a wire brush and heavy-duty cleanser.
Painting isn’t brain surgery, but it’s not a breeze, either. Here are some rules of thumb:
3. Allow to dry completely before applying an oil-based, stain-blocking primer.
• Prime before painting. Primer will allow the paint to adhere better.
4. Paint with a semigloss latex. Tips:
• Most hard surfaces will take primer better if they’re roughed up a little with fine-grade sandpaper.
1. Never paint the firebox.
• When using spray paint, multiple, thin layers are better than one, thick coat. Ease up on your trigger finger, and spray in short bursts.
2. Brick is porous and drinks paint, so buy twice wha you think you’ll need. 3. Wear safety glasses and gloves when cleaning anything with a metal brush.
• Wait for the previous coat of paint or primer to dry completely before adding another coat.
3. Ceramic Tile With proper prep, you can paint just about anything. Here are seven of our favorite ideas:
Imagine how sweet it is to update ceramic tile without having to bust up and cart away tons of old tile.
1. Door, Drawer, and Cabinet Hardware Spray paint can turn builder-grade brass locks and hinges into fashion-forward hardware with an oil-rubbed bronze, pewter, or stainless look.
Play it safe and avoid painting tiles in high-traffic and high-moisture areas. Some good places are laundry room floors, backsplashes under cabinets (but not above ranges where pasta sauce splatters), and walls around tubs you rarely use.
Prep: Prep: 1. Clean hardware with a fine steel wool to remove grease and grime.
1. Repair cracked or chipped tile with caulk or grou before painting.
2. Rough up the surface with fine-grain sandpaper.
2. Give patching material ample time to dry, then lightly sand before applying an epoxy or urethane bonding primer.
3. Before you paint, insert a tiny strip of painter’s tape into the keyhole to make sure paint doesn’t gunk it up.
3. Sand after priming and between each coat of quality latex paint.
4. Prime with a metallic primer, then paint with metallic spray paint.
4. Wait several days for the paint to cure completely, then seal with two or three coats of clear, water-based polyurethane.
Tip: Tips: Insert the door lock’s spindle into a square of Styrofoam, which will hold it upright while you spray around the knob.
1. To get a smooth look, apply paint in zigzags, then roll down in one, smooth motion.
2. Brick Fireplace
2. Use 240-grit wet/dry sandpaper for prep and between coats.
When you paint your red brick fireplace, you transform the entire room. But beware! Once you paint brick, it’s nearly impossible to return it to the original brick color. You can paint brick a single color, or achieve some variation — like the variations in real brick — by sponging on slightly lighter and darker hues. Prep:
3. Don’t forget safety goggles and masks when sanding tiles. 4. Wood Floors When wood floors are beyond another refinishing, painting can give them a second life — and give you a chance to add a personal touch to your home.

1. Slightly sand the surface so your primer will ad here better. No need to sand down to the wood; even roughing up the seal coat will help the primer adhere better.
2. Rough up the shiny surface with 180-grit sandpaper. If some nooks and crannies remain glossy, apply a deglosser (paint stores sell it) to re move shine.
2. Vacuum and mop with a damp cloth to remove all the dust — nothing ruins a paint job faster than dust.

3. Tint your primer to reduce the number of coats you’ll need of latex enamel floor paint.

1. Before you commit to a paint color, paint a large piece of foam board with a sample of your desired color and put it on the floor to give you a good idea what the finished floor will look like.
2. Highly textured vinyl floor may require another sanding and a second coat of primer.
2. It takes each coat about 24 hours to dry completely. So don’t jump the gun when applying the next, thin coat.
7. Appliances Heat-resistant appliance paint will perk up your kitchen. Use an indoor appliance paint to change colors, or a liquid stainless steel application to give your appliance the stainless steel look.
3. Your painted floor won’t completely cure for almost a month, so hold off on moving back heavy things like pianos and chests of drawers.
Use a roller for small touchups; two or three thin coats of spray paint is better for total appliance coverage.
4. Protect your painted floor by putting mats down at the sink (wood and paint hate water) and high-traffic entryways.
Prep: 5. Carpet 1. Clean appliance exteriors with a heavy-duty cleaning solution and, if needed, a scrubbing pad.
We love the idea of covering stains and reviving a carpet with upholstery paint. It saves hundreds of dollars and the hassle of getting rid of an old carpet.
2. Remove handles and hardware; place painters tape over trim and logos.
Kathie Smula of Spray It New upholstery paint says carpets with a short pile are the best candidates for painting; long-pile carpets become hard and matted when painted.
3. Sand the exterior. Tips: 1. Make sure the front of your appliance is metal, not plastic. Plastic exteriors will require priming, while appliance paint will stick more easily to metal exteriors.
Prep: 1. Thoroughly clean the carpet before painting. You don’t have to steam clean it, but scrub up the worst stains and vacuum so dust and dirt don’t mix with the paint.
2. If you’re spray-painting, haul the appliance outdoors to avoid getting paint on cabinets and floors. If you paint indoors, open windows to assure proper ventilation.
2. Skip priming and just spray paint two or three coats, depending on how deep you want the color. Make sure it’s dry to the touch before spraying an other coat.
3. For the stainless look, Liquid Stainless Steel is the go-to product. It’s got real flakes of stainless steel. Apply with a brush.
Tips: 1. Don’t confuse upholstery paint, good for carpets, with fabric paint, good for T-shirts.

Spring Cleaning Guide If You Love, Love, LOVE Houseplants An outdoor shower and dirt massage will do wonders. You like having a clean house, and you LOVE having a green house. But a trail of dead leaves on the floor isn’t a good look no matter what. This plan will help keep your home clean and green, while helping your plants stay healthy, too. GIVE PLANTS A SPRING CHECK-UP Use a magnifying glass to check for bugs. Look for the marks they leave, like scarring, a cotton-like “fluff,” or webbing. (Hint: The undersides of leaves are a favorite hiding spot.) A few applications of a standard houseplant insecticide should take care of the critters. Trim yellow and dead leaves. ”Aesthetically, plants look nicer without dead or dying leaves,” says Liza Wheeler, an “interior landscaping artist.” And creating a clean, green slate will make it easier to spot new problems as they arise, she says. Massage the dirt to break it up. “The soil can get kind of cruddy from watering, so breaking it up makes it look cleaner,” Wheeler says. “It also helps aerate the soil slightly.” Give them an outdoor shower. A little fresh air and a drizzly spring day — or a gentle spray from the hose — will help plants shake off the dust and cobwebs of winter. Don’t forget to wipe off the saucers and exteriors of pots. CLEAN THE AREAS IN YOUR HOME THAT YOUR PLANTS COVER UP Moisture and dirt can find their way out of pots and onto your floor, countertop, or shelf. While your plants are drying outside after their shower, clean the spots where they sit, checking for any damage, which could be caused by a cracked pot. Also clean any walls and baseboards that your greenery hides. CLEAN THE WINDOWS Crystal-clear windows allow more sunlight to reach plant leaves, fostering photosynthesis and respiration, freshening your indoor air. Besides clean windows make the entire home feel fresh and bright. ORGANIZE YOUR PLANT SUPPLIES AND TOOLS Make lovin’ on your plants easier with some simple organizing solutions: • Do some organizing and purging to clear space in a cabinet or on a shelf to keep all your supplies together and easily accessible. • Stow frequently used items like a spray bottle and fertilizer in an easy-to-carry cleaning caddy. It’s also rot-, fire-, and insect-proof. Warranties range from 30 to 50 years. Newer versions feature durable, baked-on paint finishes guaranteed to last 15 years. In addition to the traditional standing seam panels — the ones with ridges running from the peak to the eave — today’s metal roofing includes products that mimic slate, clay tiles, and wood shakes. Metal roofing also is extremely fire-resistant — in a fire-prone area, having a metal roof may qualify you for a discount on homeowners insurance. Why it’s low-maintenance: Most metal roofing comes with a 40- to 50-year warranty, and the replacement cycle is almost three times longer than that of three-tab asphalt shingles. Look for baked-on enamel finishes with rust-proof undercoating that are warranted for the life of the product. The finish won’t crack or shed like asphalt, meaning you won’t be scooping those little granules out of the gutter every spring and fall. So you know: There are two types of rust-proof undercoating. For reliable protection from rust, The Metal Roofing Alliance recommends: • For galvanized zinc undercoating: A galvanizing thickness level of at least G-90. • For Galvalume undercoating: Thickness level of AZ-50 or AZ-55. A metal roof does cost about two to three times more than asphalt shingles. But that doesn’t account for the benefits you reap by not having to repair or replace as often. Here’s to your many maintenance-free weekends. Life-expectancy: 50+ years Maintenance cycle: Repair or repaint every 50 years. Cost: $3.50 to $11 per square foot, installed. FYI: Most metal roofing is made with steel, but homeowners in coastal areas should choose aluminum products to protect against rust. Steel and aluminum are recyclable. The next-best thing: Concrete tile just sounds tough, doesn’t it? Bingo — it’s resistant to wind, hail, water, fire, and pests, and often comes with a lifetime warranty against defects and performance failure. Concrete tiles often outlast the building they cover. Caveat: It’s heavy; you’ll need your roof structure evaluated by a building engineer to make sure it can support the added weight. Retrofitting a roof to carry concrete tile can add $1,000 to $10,000 to the cost of installation. Cost: $4.50 to $10.50 per square foot, installed.

Laminate plank flooring gets the nod here for its ease of installation (it’s a good DIY project), relatively modest cost, and easy-peasy maintenance. We like that it can mimic natural stone and exotic hardwoods like koa and rosewood for a fraction of the cost. Why it’s low-maintenance: Laminate flooring has a tough, clear plastic wear layer that resists scratches, moisture, and stains; it never needs refinishing during the life of the product. Some are reinforced with aluminum oxide, one of the hardest compounds known. Laminates also are dimensionally stable, so seams won’t open up during changes in temperature and humidity. Depending on the thickness and composition of the plastic coating, warranties range from 15 to 50 years. Some manufacturers offer lifetime warranties against staining, fading, and wear. Life-expectancy: 25+ years Maintenance cycle: Sweep or vacuum as needed; use water sparingly when cleaning. Cost: $1 to $7 per square foot; add $2 to $5 per square foot for professional installation. #4 CHOOSE QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS — THEY'LL NEVER STAIN Almost 80% of designers responding to a recent survey from the National Kitchen and Bath Association said quartz countertops are their top choice. In addition to being long-lasting, quartz counters come in many colors and unique patterns to go with any motif. It’s composed of about 95% quartz particles with resin binders (quartz is one of the hardest naturally occurring substances). It’s about the same price as granite. Why it’s low-maintenance: Quartz is tough, durable, antimicrobial, and scratch-resistant. It’s almost impossible to stain, and it cleans up easily. It’s completely non-porous and never needs sealing. A 10- to 15-year warranty is standard; some manufacturers offer a lifetime guarantee. Life-expectancy: 30+ years Maintenance cycle: Occasional cleaning with mild soap and water. Cost: $40 to $100 per square foot. FYI: Quartz is an abundant natural resource. And old quartz countertops can be crushed and reused in new counters #5 REPLACE WOOD WINDOWS WITH FIBERGLASS (NO MORE WARPS) Fiberglass is moisture- and rot-resistant, and won’t warp like wood. They provide good thermal insulating properties. Plus they come pre-finished and look like real wood, or are painted in factory-applied finishes. And they’re cheaper than quality wood windows. Why it’s low-maintenance: Fiberglass is dimensionally stable so it doesn’t warp even under extreme temperatures. Seams are bonded together and won’t separate or have gaps, so repairs are virtually non-existent. That means the window will operate reliably for years. Fiberglass holds paint well — a good option if you’re looking to apply your own custom color. The fact that fiberglass doesn’t warp or shrink means paint finishes are long-lasting and touch-up work is rare. Warranties range from 10 to 20 years, which includes the glass and glass seals. FYI: The Department of Energy says that windows with an Energy Star label can help lower home energy costs by 7% to 15%. Life-expectancy: 40+ years Maintenance cycle: Clean as needed with water and mild detergent; repaint every 10 to 15 years. Cost: $400 to $730 for a 3-foot-by-5-foot double-hung window, depending on options such as argon gas insulation and low-E coatings. #6 OPT

Not so many years ago, composite decking looked about as natural as a used tire. No longer — today’s varieties do an excellent job of mimicking the color and grain patterns of real wood such as redwood, cedar, and even exotic woods like Brazilian walnut and teak. Why it’s low-maintenance: Composite decking won’t chip, splinter, or fade. There’s none of the periodic application of deck cleaner or the refinishing required of wood decks. (On occasion, you’ll want to hose off dirt.) Composites won’t rot and are impervious to insect attack. Types with antimicrobial coatings won’t harbor mold and mildew. A 20- to 25-year warranty is typical. Life-expectancy: 25 years

Like a lot of imitation items made for outdoors, PVC railing systems for decks and porches have come a long way since the obviously fake systems of not so long ago. More companies have come into the marketplace with PVC aluminum, composite, and fiberglass products that do a good job of looking like well-crafted wood railings and balusters. Hidden fastening methods do away with some of the tackier connectors painfully visible on older systems. Why it’s low-maintenance: PVC-capped aluminum railing systems are the best of both worlds — a rust-proof metal core and metal fasteners, all covered with weatherproof PVC. Factory colors are limited, but repainting and touch-up are banished. Composites are good at looking like expensive woods, and they’ll never need staining or painting. Most systems are combos, with a composite sleeve that slides over a strong, pressure-treated wood post and pre-painted aluminum or composite balusters. Warranties range from 15 to 25 years. Life-expectancy: 50+ years Maintenance cycle: Clean with mild soap and water as needed. Cost: $15 to $60 per linear foot, depending on style and complexity. #8 ADD AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM THAT KNOWS WHEN TO WATER (AND WHEN NOT TO) A weather-sensing, water-conserving irrigation system waters your lawn and landscape plants without your input. It gathers local weather data and automatically adjusts output to provide the right amount of moisture for your landscape’s growing needs. If you take off on vacation, an automated system continues checking weather conditions and applying the proper amount of water to your trees, shrubs, and lawn. Some automated irrigation controllers meet EPA guidelines; the EPA estimates that switching a clock-operated system to a weather-sensing, WaterSense-certified system saves the average homeowner 8,800 gallons of water each year. That’s good for the environment, and money in your pocket. You’ll save on sleep, too. Program your system so that, while you snooze, sprinkler heads run during the wee morning hours, when temps are cool, evaporation is minimal, and water usage is optimized. Why it’s low-maintenance: Although the system itself needs periodic upkeep, such as draining the lines in winter and occasionally fixing or replacing sprinkler heads, you’ll more than recoup your time by not having to water your plants yourself, dragging out hoses and setting sprinklers by hand. Warranties include one year for parts, and up to 10 years for some wireless sensors. Life-expectancy: 50+ years for pipes; five to 25 years for sprinkler heads and valves. Maintenance cycle: Annual draining of irrigation lines; occasional replacement of sprinkler heads. Cost: $2,500 to $6,900 for a sprinkler system covering 5,000 square feet; DIY kits for similar size run $1,400 to $1,800. FYI: If a summer heat wave puts your community under water restrictions, you can program an automated system to comply.
