hat started as Stanley Poe’s 4-H project is now a thriving sheep farm just west of Franklin. Poe Hampshires is nationally famous for raising high quality show sheep. “Dad got into 4-H in 1945 and purchased his first purebred Hampshire sheep. He purchased ewes from Lakewood Farms in the

Edinburgh area. He had two ewes and one ram and showed them in 4-H,” said Kalen Poe, Stanley’s youngest son. “Now, here we are with more than 600 head. We are one of the largest Hampshire breeders in the country. We’ve had national champions born and raised here. Several ewes and rams won national and state championships.”
His father really started getting good at breeding and showing high quality Hampshires. He won the Indiana State Fair in 1956 and the Chicago International, which was the premier livestock show in the early ’60s. Stanley Poe graduated high school, served in the military, then attended college at Purdue University and the University of Kentucky, earning a doctorOpposite page: Keegan, Kalen and Stanley Poe II at their family farm, Poe Hampshires. ate in animal health. He worked all over the world as a ruminant nutritionist, specializing in feed additives for sheep and cattle to help prevent diseases. He finished his career at Elanco, the animal health division of Eli Lilly and Co. “He still can’t stop doing stuff. He retired in 2003 and came back here,” Kalen said. Stanley was on the Franklin Community School Board for 30 years. He serves on the American Sheep Industry board and the Indiana State Fair board. And he still helps out with the herd he
helped build as the “sire manager,” which means he takes care of the rams, the most expensive sheep on the farm. The farm is still family owned and the Poe sons, who are following in their father’s footstep and attended the University of Kentucky, own shares of it. Working with his oldest brother, Stanley Poe II, Kalen helps run the farm’s breeding operation and sells sheep. Their brother Keegan, who also attended Purdue University, owns a nearby agricultural business, Poe Quality Meats. spring 2016 I southside business exchange

The fourth brother, Cameron, stayed in Lexington, Kentucky, and works in the criminal justice system there. All four Poes showed sheep in Johnson County 4-H, although Keegan developed more of an interest in cattle later on. Stanley II, Keegan and Kalen have animal science degrees. Kalen worked at Kansas State University as a teaching assistant and returned to Franklin in 2014.
Selling sheep “We facilitate several different markets,” Kalen Poe said. “My focus is show lambs. Eighty percent of our market is to other breeders and 20 percent is the meat trade, the commercial trade.” They sell about 200 head a year for shows and breeding. Lambs that aren’t suitable for this purpose are sold as meat, which is the pur-

pose of the Hampshire breed. They are not wool sheep, Kalen said. They are sheared for comfort and hygiene, but their wool is low quality. It can be used for stuffing, but is not suitable for clothing. Despite it being a small portion of their business, Kalen is still a proponent of locally raised lamb. “Most (lamb) comes from Australia or New Zealand. The lambs are smaller, not as well marbled and not as good, taste-wise, as we can grow here.” Lamb is supplied to R. Bistro, an Indianapolis restaurant, as well as to Keegan’s business. Mutton, which is meat from adult sheep, is not as popular here, though. Sheep are more prevalent with the area’s ethnic market, where sheep and lamb is a staple. “Albania, Mexico, Greece, Romania have more mutton, not so much for Americans,” Kalen said.

Breeding lambs The primary focus of the farm, however, is breeding lambs that will be shown. Every state has a show circuit, Kalen explained. It starts with local and state fairs and moves on to championships for breeders. Prestigious national shows are held in Kansas City, Louisville and Denver. “It’s a competition. There’s a lot of money involved, a lot of politics,” he said. “The show is all based on looks. It’s a beauty contest. The higher quality ones will surface. It’s a game. It’s fun. They are judged on how they look, how they walk; genetics has a lot to do with it.” So, the offspring of sheep that win national awards are in demand. “Just like racehorses,” Kalen said.

“Reproductive technology has skyrocketed since I started showing.” Seeing the possibilities in 2004, Kalen and Stanley began offering reproductive services on the farm. They sell semen from rams, as well as embryos. Customers can bring their ewes to be impregnated at Poe
Hampshires’ lab. They can purchase semen from the Poes’ rams or bring some from another source. The procedure is done laparoscopically and the Poes have a veterinarian on contract to do it. “He’s so good at it. It’s very minimal stress (for the sheep) and very quick,” he said. “We can breed 120 a day.” Reproductive technology has changed the show sheep industry, resulting in higher quality animals and allowing small farmers to compete. Kalen said a small farmer who owns 10 ewes would not find it feasible to purchase a high quality ram at $5,000 or $10,000. But he can purchase the semen from the expensive ram and get his offspring. He has one customer who has only 30 ewes, but has won $60,000 in
the show circuit off his sheep. “The smaller guys have been able to excel faster. It’s kind of made it anybody’s game,” Kalen said. “This competition has made everybody better.” He is proud to be working and growing his family legacy. “Stanley and I started the sheep program where my dad grew up. My grandparents moved here in the 1930s. They purchased the land they were farming on in 1967. This is also a typical old-style family farm,” Kalen said. Their grandpa was a full time farmer. He farmed row crops and had livestock. The Poes still farm row crops on their 2,200 acres, forming a partnership with a farm in Shelby County to share equipment and expenses.

steers and I realized I enjoyed the cattle,” he said. He works full time for Indiana Farm Bureau as a regional manager, working with volunteers in a six-county area. He serves on the Johnson County Beef Cattle Association and Friends of Johnson County Agriculture. He studied animal science at the University of Kentucky and received his master’s in ruminant nutrition at Purdue University. In 1993 he was at Purdue managing the research cattle barn when he met a man who was interested in getting out of the cattle business. Keegan purchased his whole herd of Simmental cattle. “I started selling beef in 2007; pork and

lamb in 2010,” he said. “I sell wholes, halves and quarters or by the piece or pound. The customers are looking for bulk. It’s cheaper and fresher off the farm.” The cattle he raises himself. The pork comes from Cargill Grain and Livestock. The lambs are from his family’s farm. The farm is an Indiana State Department of Agriculture certified livestock producer. The voluntary program recognizes farmers who demonstrate publicly their commitment to the environment, animal wellbeing, food safety, emergency planning, biosecurity and being a good neighbor in their community Keegan likes to educate people about food and farming and one point he makes
is that farm-purchased food is not healthier but is tastier. “It’s not more nutritious or safer. It’s not anything but fresher. I’ve been asked about organic. I’d have to lower my standards to be organic. Beef on the plate is virtually the same no matter how it was raised. But there’s a huge different in taste and tenderness.” Poe Quality Meats is a small operation and sales are limited to when the animals reach market weight. Customers get on the list and get the meat when it’s ready. Right now, he has 25 mother cows and 22 calves. In 14 months after birth, the calves are ready for the butcher. “I enjoy feeding out the calves and watching them grow. I enjoy people telling me how good my product is.” B

local success story
Owners of Vino Villa have tailored bistro to meet customers’ expectations STORY BY GREG SEITER PHOTOS BY DON MEYER
P
aul and Laura Jacquin were introduced to fine wines early in their marriage. For their 10th wedding anniversary, they took a seemingly innocent trip to California’s Napa Valley. They became so enthralled by its wines, unique food pairings and casual atmosphere that they began to discuss the possibility of someday operating their own business. A few short years later, that concept became reality when they opened Greenwood’s Vino Villa. “About five years ago, we started thinking more seriously about the idea and began to do some investigating,” said Paul, a native of Cincinnati who spent 22 years working in the banking business before founding Vino Villa. “We visited many places, both in and out of state, and determined what we liked. “When we decided to move forward, we looked in Greenwood because we felt there was a need here, particularly on the south side. We wanted to create a place where people could experience fine wines and learn about them in the process.” Initially, Paul and Laura, a Southport High School graduate who travels extensively while continuing to work as a health care consultant, envisioned Vino Villa as a simple wine and cheese shop, but their plans slowly changed based on licensing limitations and feedback they received from community residents.
Paul and Laura Jacquin opened Vino Villa on Madison Avenue in Greenwood in September 2011.
“Alcoholic beverage laws and what you can do with licenses prohibited us from being able to hold wine tastings,” Paul said. “In addition, as we worked 10 months on the building, people would come by and ask questions. They said they were looking forward to being able to hang out and drink wine, so we had to go back to the drawing board. The original license wasn’t a restaurant license, so we reworked construction and headed in the direction of a bistro.” Prior to buying what had been commonly known in Greenwood as the Polk family home at 200 N. Madison Ave., the Jacquins had to decide whether they wanted a recently constructed structure in a strip mall setting with easy access and plentiful parking or a more historic building. For them, the decision was easy.

“It ultimately came down to the atmosphere we wanted,” Paul said. “The Polk house was built in 1904. It incorporated the things we really liked.”
A lot of remodeling Of course, extensive remodeling was needed, particularly on the second floor, which originally featured four bedrooms and a bathroom, and on the two-bedroom third floor, which at one time served as the servants’ quarters but had more
recently been converted into an apartment-like area. Today, while the building’s second floor provides unique seating options in each of the former bedrooms, the third floor serves as a wine bar with open tables and chairs. On the first floor, visitors will now find cheese cases and a wine shop that houses approximately 500 different wines at any given time. “We’ve tried to keep as much tied to the period of a 112-year-old house as possible, but many things obviously had to be renewed and updated,” Paul said. “On the first floor, we had custom-built wine racks installed and raised them off the floor so we wouldn’t have to cover up the beautiful inlay. “When we pulled up the carpet on the second floor, we found beautiful old wood floors that had been painted,” he

continued. “We stripped them down and redid the walls. Now, the seating area there holds between eight and 18 people, depending on the room. Some are situated with a more traditional upright dining table and chairs, while others have couches and a more laid-back environment. The third floor will accommodate up to 40 people,” he added. “We’ve had smaller holiday and birthday parties take place up there.” Vino Villa also features a patio area with seating options. “We purchased the property directly south of us for outdoor dining so we open that up when the weather turns warm enough,” he said. “We try to have live music out there every Thursday evening.” Though most of the focus at Vino Villa is obviously on wine, and a few beer options too, the facility’s second floor and patio area are considered to be family-friendly dining options. “We have a full menu, and people definitely dine here with their children,” he said. “Our chefs, Bob Battle and Rick

Rudicill, are always creating something special. People love to try new things, so we’re consistently trying to put new specials on the menu every couple of weeks.” Entrepreneurship has been an eye-opening but fulfilling experience for the Jacquins. “My wife and I had never been in the restaurant business before,” Paul said. “The menu has constantly changed and grown, and we’ve had to continually update to meet demands from guests and regulatory entities. Even our service staff has grown. “However, the outlook on what we wanted to provide our guests — a fun, casual environment — has stayed true. This is a comfy, cozy place to come enjoy some great unique dishes with, of course, a big focus on wine selection.” B spring 2016 I southside business exchange

small business professor
By Bruce Freeman
Midlife crisis or new opportunity? Q: I am an attorney in private practice. I am currently licensed in New York. As such, my credentials are not easily transferable to a different state. After 25 years here, my wife and I are seeking to relocate. I would like to try my hand at another business. Please give me some advice. A: You are not alone. For many state-licensed professionals, especially those many years removed from their exams, moving from one jurisdiction to another can be daunting and interfere with earning a living. Business attorney Ira Sessler has some excellent advice and questions to consider: First, will your new lifestyle allow for a change in income? After 25 years in one line of work, we can assume you are in your peak earning years. A change in profession will likely
result in a reduction of income, at least until you establish yourself. Although temporary, this must be considered. Second, you must decide if you would like to be an employee, an independent consultant or a small-business owner. Third, carefully examine your skill set. Write down everything you do on a daily basis as if you were explaining your current profession to someone who has no idea what an attorney does. Don’t leave anything out. The idea of this exercise is to break down your daily routine into identifiable sets of skills. Do you solicit clients (sales)? Do you prepare documents for court or government agencies (professional writing)? This exercise should go on for some time. Your experiences are very personal, as are your interests, likes and dislikes. Take
your time and soon you will be able to combine the skills and a new career path should begin to emerge. Last, now that you know what skills you bring to the table, it is important to incorporate all this with your new location. If you are moving from a major metropolis to a rural environment, some of your skills may not be as useful as you originally had hoped. Don’t worry, take your time and something positive will emerge. Behave! You, your business are on camera
T
hese days, you can’t look at your Facebook feed or YouTube without seeing videos of people behaving badly. A lot of questionable behavior is caught on a smartphone and then editorialized while posted to a social media platform in matter of seconds. Many of these videos go viral. You likely saw the recent video of a Taco Bell executive who physically assaulted an Uber driver or the one of the medical resident who berated another Uber driver. Both were relieved of their duties based on these videos. Such videos can have a huge impact — and a lasting one — on the reputation of you and your business.
20
We live in the mobile video age. In 2015, 64 percent of American adults owned a smartphone of some kind, according to Pew Research Center. That’s up from 35 percent in 2011. Smartphone ownership is particularly high among younger Americans. Pew also found that 67 percent of adults use their phone to share pictures, videos or commentary about events happening in their community. Mobile technology is a part of everyday life. People do not think twice about recording events they deem interesting. In 2015, YouTube users uploaded 300 hours of video every minute, according to Statistic Brain Research Institute. The

total number of hours watched on YouTube each month is 3.25 billion hours. Businesses have to be aware of the usage of mobile technology, especially video. Disgruntled employees and unhappy customers have uploaded countless less-than-flattering videos of businesses to social platforms in the past five years. Recently, a Carrier Air Conditioning employee recorded co-workers reacting to the news of layoffs and posted it to YouTube, causing it to cross over to mainstream news. The restaurant industry is often a target camera, page 29

Garment factory redevelopment proposed By Michele Holtkamp
1: The former garment factory at the intersection of Wayne and Water streets will be rehabilitated into retail and residential space and an events center. GARMENT FACTORY MARKETPLACE: The eastern half of the building will be divided into retail space on the first and second floors along Wayne Street, and owner-occupied condominiums in the back of the building. GARMENT FACTORY EVENTS: The western portion of the building will be remodeled into an events center operated by Oaken Barrel owner Kwang Casey. The events center will feature a commercial kitchen, a bar and gathering space for groups of 25 people up to a party of 500. 2: Four homes to the west of the former garment factory will be purchased by Bemis Group, razed and the property donated to the city to create a 50space public parking lot.

eastern portion of the building, where retail shops and condominiums will be housed, will be built to suit the tenants based on market interest, the Bemis Group said. That work would take two to three years. The building has historical significance for Franklin. The first portion of the nearly 65,000-square-foot Varynit Mills Garment Factory at Wayne and Water streets was built in 1925, and seamstresses made clothing and equipment for men, women, children and members of the armed forces during World War II. Uniforms worn in the movie “Hoosiers” were made at the factory. In recent years, it has been used as long-term storage for a Greenwood moving and storB. BEMIS age company. As part of the project, the former 2,200-square-foot Double Cola bottling plant at the eastern corner of Wayne and Water streets will be redeveloped into office space. T. BEMIS Bemis Group has all six properties under contract to purchase. The further revitalization of downtown Franklin helps meet the goal of having places CASEY for residents to live, work, shop, eat and play in the core of the city, McGuinness said.
The costs Bemis Group plans to spend $2.5 million of private investment money on the construction. City tax dollars from the TIF district could total up to $1.4 million and cover the cost of purchasing the garment factory, estimated at $720,000, purchasing four homes to the west for parking, and cover about

$300,000 of the renovation costs. Fifty public parking spots will be added, and the city will build the lot. The developers will donate the land back to the city. The lot wouldn’t be large enough for the bigger events, and Casey plans to offer valet parking for the event center so guests’ cars can be parked in other city lots. Bemis Group also is considering offering a shuttle bus to transport customers to the various city parking lots. This summer, the city will reconstruct Wayne Street, from Home Avenue to Main Street, to mimic Monroe Street with new pavement, sidewalks and street lights. That money will come from the windfall of income tax money released by state legislators in the recent session, McGuinness said. McGuinness said the building has much potential, but he knew it would take a serious cash incentive to prompt development. He had been asking developers for proposals for the property for nearly two years. He had flagged the land as a key piece of property to expand downtown Franklin. He chose the Bemis plan because they are local developers with a proven track record, the development will bring new unique amenities to the city and have a financial return. The plans envision visitors to the events
center and marketplace heading to other downtown restaurants, bars and shopping, and the projected annual property tax revenue will increase from $13,000 to $52,000.
Market demands Well-known Greenwood eatery and brewery Oaken Barrel has been asked for years to host large events, but the most the restaurant near Main Street and Emerson Avenue can accommodate is about 75 people. “I’m turning business away,” said Casey, who owns the restaurant. Casey has been asked by developers for years to open a second restaurant or get involved in event centers elsewhere in central Indiana, but none of the other proposals ever sparked his interest because they weren’t unique and didn’t offer a vibrant space, he said. He wasn’t interested in a traditional banquet hall, he said. This time, the vision was different. Designs show a commercial kitchen, bar, meeting space for small groups and an expansive ballroom where 500 people can gather. Imagine board meetings, small social or civic group gatherings, taking Franklin’s successful outdoor summer festival series and expanding it indoors in the winter, proms, and, of course, weddings. garment, page 29

Driven to succeed in the advertising business
ike every millennial in college, Mac Nagaswami was immersed in high tech, his world a digital swirl of cellphones, social media and Internet portals. That’s what made his approach to business seem so last century. His market research in summer 2012, as he prepared to start his junior year at the University of Delaware, involved going doorto-door in neighborhoods around campus, recording answers to his questions on a clipboard. Chief among them: Would you be willing to drive around with an ad affixed to the outside of your car for money? Nagaswami got so many affirmative responses that he launched a company soon after. Wilmington-based Carvertise is, however, a far drive from low tech. Using algorithms, analytics and global positioning systems, it has a unique take on vehicle-wrap advertising — Carvertising, if you will — that is heavy on return-on-investment data for clients that want to know their advertising is reaching eyeballs. Among the information Carvertise’s software provides clients is how much mileage was driven and where, and how many estimated impressions — viewings of their ads — were generated. It charges $2.50 to $5.25 for every 1,000 impressions. That’s enabled by GPS installed in each Carvertise driver’s vehicle, overlaid with data on traffic counts, the rate of speed of that traffic, and population density in the areas where the drivers are traveling. Part of Carvertise’s business model is to make delivery of that information feel less corporate and more personal, tapping into the rise of the sharing-economy trend popularized by such extra-earnings enablers as Airbnb and Uber. Among Carvertise’s clients is Jefferson Health. Drivers are ordinary people with good records and vehicles from the 2005 model year or later. Tribune News Service photo

Carvertise does not have staff drivers but uses ordinary people with good driving records, 2005 model-year vehicles or newer, and commuting minimums of 800 miles a month, and additional driving is not expected beyond what they regularly do. Their cars are wrapped with the advertising, sparing Carvertise the expense of owning and maintaining a fleet of vehicles. “What we’re bringing to the market is a very new advertising channel,” said Nagaswami, 25, CEO of a company of 12 employees with clients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. They

include ShopRite, United Way and Buffalo Wild Wings. “It’s taking outdoor advertising and making it more grassroots,” Nagaswami said. Vehicle wraps aren’t new, but the technology-enhanced service Carvertise offers is — and might be blessed with perfect timing, said Marc Brownstein, president and CEO of Brownstein Group, a Philadelphia branding agency. “The stars may have aligned for Mac and Carvertise,” said Brownstein, who knows Nagaswami through a mutual driven, page 29
When male leaders ask for help, do they get penalized? By Anya Litvak
G
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
one are the days when the business world expected men to act like men and never ask for help. Or are they? While no management consultant would advise male leaders to clam up instead of asking their subordinates for assistance, research suggests that men who seek help are perceived as less than — less competent, less strong, less of a leader. In a series of experiments that followed Wharton Business School MBA students on spring-break leadership adventures around the world, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, Duke University and the University of San Diego showed that while women leaders could ask for help with impunity, men incurred a “competence cost.” The study, published last year in the journal The Leadership Quarterly, took advantage of situations where asking for help was inescapable — scaling a volcano
in Ecuador, traversing a glacial ice cap in Antarctica, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Each day, one participant in the group was randomly selected as a leader and later assessed by others in the group. The trend was clear: men who asked for help were perceived as weaker than those who didn’t. David Lebel, assistant professor of business administration at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at Pitt and one of the paper’s co-authors, said male leaders shouldn’t be discouraged from tapping their employees for assistance. But they might want to strategize how they do it to avoid appearing incompetent. “Leaders do need to ask for help to learn,” he said. To deflect some of those gender perceptions, Lebel recommends flattery. Ask for someone’s expertise, he said. “Play that up.” “Make this about advice seeking,” he said. It can also help to go outside the work-
place for help, said Dexter Hairston, a YMCA director in Pittsburgh who also heads a teen leadership program. Hairston has a trusted confidant he turns to when he needs to bounce ideas off someone without being judged. “If I don’t know the answers, I owe it to whomever I’m impacting to get the answers,” he said. “I can do that quietly,” he said, without seeming weak. Carol Walker, a principal with Prepared to Lead, a Boston-based consultancy for young leaders, said the modern knowledge-based workplace has no room for gender-based help-seeking penalties. “Many of these issues aren’t gender specific at all,” she said. Instead, how leaders draw contributions from their subordinates is more a matter of establishing how they’ll be valued. “I think the millennial generation in general is just much more understanding of the fact that we all have different skills,” she said. “There’s less of a value for hierarchy.” B spring 2016 I southside business exchange

Time to clean out your email, computer
Y
ou may not think you’re a hoarder, but your hard drive knows better. Those emails, photos and attachments that sit there in your computer or smartphone for weeks, even months, eat away at drive space and slow every log-on and complicate every keyword search. You already know that, sure, but when was the last time you did something about it? “Even the most organized person can have issues with their email,” says Jen Cohen Crompton, a Philadelphia-based small business productivity consultant. Digital hoarding may not be as visually obvious as stacks of paper spilling off a desk, she said, but those undeleted emails, icon-covered home pages and layers of tabs can clutter your mind as well as your hard drive. That makes for a less productive workday that can snowball into less productive work weeks and work months. Digital hoarding feels different than physical hoarding, which requires some active collecting. Emails fill the inbox whether we ask for them or not, so digital hoarding can simply be the result of benign neglect or excessive multi-tasking. In those instances, the problem usually lasts only until you have a few minutes to organize. But too often, the digital hoarder shares one key characteristic with the physical hoarder: An abiding fear they may one day need that file they’re about to delete. Crompton’s response: “If you haven’t touched that document in the last 12 months, you’re not going to need it.” For the hesitant, she suggests adopting a mindset that, “Nothing terrible is going to happen if I get rid of this.” If it’s sensitive, or has long-term importance, put it on a flash drive, she says.
26
And for the already-buried, she recommends cleaning and organizing small chunks at a time, starting with those stored photos and gigabyte gobbling attachments. There is a counterargument, and chronic hoarders have an esteemed ally in Albert Einstein, who is credited for saying, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” A 2013 study by three University of Minnesota researchers found that cluttered space is more conducive to creative thinking, where an orderly desk puts you in a more conventional frame of mind.
spring 2016 I southside business exchange
The authors noted “a large and growing industry centered on instilling environmental orderliness” with “multiple billions of dollars” in annual revenue. “In contrast, many creative individuals with Nobel prizes and other ultra-prestigious awards prefer — and, in fact, cultivate — messy environments as an aid to their work.” So those reluctant, or simply stubborn, about cleaning out and organizing their digital files can always claim their creative talents require a degree of messiness. But their computer will still run slower. B

The architectural features planned, such as the original hardwood floors, high ceilings, shiny steel reminiscent of a factory look, exposed beams and a neon sign, will give the space a unique atmosphere, said Casey and Todd Bemis, co-owner of Bemis Group. “This will be a premier event center in the city, if not the state,” Casey said. A key factor in moving forward was what Casey, McGuinness and the Bemises say is a lack of large-scale event venues in Johnson County. Other locations can host 200 or 300 people, but none can accommodate a crowd of 500, they said. The Garment Factory project is the third announcement of a new events venue in Johnson County in recent months. Later this year, Mallow Run Winery in the Center Grove area plans to open its 6,200-square-foot venue, The Sycamore at Mallow Run, and the largest room will have space for a party of 300. The Bay
Horse Inn Stables is opening a 6,600-square-foot facility on Stones Crossing Road, between Honey Creek Road and State Road 135. The Indiana Masonic Home’s new events and community center opened in August and can accommodate 300 people. Casey anticipates hiring a second staff and bringing in live music and new events, such as a New Year’s Eve party for downtown Franklin. Oaken Barrel food and drink will be served, but he does not plan to open a second restaurant at this time. The back doors of the events center will open to a well-landscaped greenspace with a view of the new Franklin Art Garden. The condominiums will be built at the rear of the eastern portion of the building, on the first and second floors. Eventual owners will have a view of Youngs Creek. New retail shops will be recruited by the Bemis Group to open in the Garment Factory Marketplace. The goal is to bring new shops to the area, not relocate existing Franklin ventures, Billy Bemis said. B

of unflattering and very damaging videos. The drive-in restaurant chain Checkers received unwanted attention when employees were horsing around in a kitchen making a video and an employee was shown wiping a hamburger bun on the floor and then making a sandwich. It was posted to Facebook and then YouTube. What can small businesses learn about reputation management in the mobile age from Checkers? Checkers did five things right.

While businesses cannot prevent customers and employees from carrying smartphones, taking videos, and then posting to social media, they can understand the threats to reputation and be prepared to manage the situation effectively. Leave them with memories, not questions.
We all want to be remembered for the high points in our lives, particularly the good times spent with family and a funeral is when all those memories surface. So at that special time your family shouldn’t be stressed with financial worries or wondering if the arrangements they made are what you would have wanted. By preplanning your funeral, you can make sure your family understands your wishes, and rather than leave them with questions, you can leave them with memories.
