Old Meets New in a 100 year old home
NaNcy crocker is the proud innkeeper and owner of the Olde Magnolia House Inn and 4th Sister Vintage store. She bought the over 100 year old home back in early spring of 2013 and has been busy redecorating the upstairs bedrooms to match her “Make something old, something new” philosophy. Whether you are coming to browse her extensive collection of vintage and repurposed items in the store or spending the night in one of three themed guest rooms upstairs, she always has a big smile, a warm hello and a story to share for everyone. Nancy knows no strangers.
The Renoir Room is one of the three guest rooms in the Olde Magnolia House Inn
Nancy had the help of her sisters, daughter and niece, who spent months cleaning and de-cluttering the house after she purchased it. They brought the history laden home into the technological age but still maintained its original charm. One guest said “It’s like being in my room and my grandmother’s room at the same time.” There are three separate bedrooms upstairs for overnight guests, each with their own private, locked entrance and bath. There is a common area where guests can gather to play a board game, read a book

or just relax. Each room is named after an artist that was living during the era the house was built. Cable Smart TVs, pod coffeemakers, lots of extra blankets and pillows make each room comfy yet modern. 4th SiSter ViNtage Store on the main floor is Nancy’s true passion. She named the store in honor of being the 4th sister…the youngest, who for the most part received hand-me-downs from her three older sisters. She began up-cycling at an early age with some of her sisters’ Christmas present boxes and the desire continued to grow over the years. She becomes obsessed with certain items and styles: outdoor tables and chairs, movie themes, magazine racks, and chairs. Once she finds the perfect item, she brings it back in her big red truck (Cliff), and begins the refurbishing process in her newly built garage in the back. It is already overflowing with found objects which she is willing to custom design just for you! 213 South Jefferson Street OldeMagnoliaHouseInn.com 4thSisterFurnitureCo.com 614.638.8849

or those traveling to Brown County for cycling, there are plenty of opportunities to escape the mundane and put rubber to pavement and dirt. Mountain biking enthusiast Tania Juillerat rides to maintain her sanity. The activity gets her “out away from people, in the woods enjoying nature.” It also keeps her fit and allows quality time with her husband, Jonathan, 12-year-old son, Ian, and 4-year-old daughter, Isabel, who all love mountain biking just as much as she does. “For me, mountain biking allows me to get out into nature. I get to see more because I can move faster and travel farther, so I can experience more than if I was just hiking,” she said. continued on page 26

Those reasons and more are why Juillerat and her husband devoted so much time to Brown County over the past 10 years. In 2004, members of the Hoosier Mountain Biking Association, including Jonathan, began building trails inside Brown County State Park. Now complete, the system attracts riders from all over the world — especially since the International Mountain Bicycling Association bestowed the term “epic” on the trails and added them to its destination “bucket list” for mountain bikers. Instead of repurposing horse trails or ATV trails, “every inch of the trails were built by mountain bikers specifically for mountain biking,” Juillerat said. Paul Arlinghaus, president of the Hoosier Mountain Biking Association, said the trails took a lot of effort to build and were designed to be as fun as possible. “We thought about all the great trails that we travel to, why we travel to those locations to ride trails and tried to build those things closer to home,” he said. The key to the mountain bike trails at the state park is that they appeal to a wide range of mountain bikers, from wide trails with fewer grades and obstacles for beginners, to steep, narrow tracks containing logs and rocks for advanced riders. “It’s about building a trail system that really has trails for beginners and intermediate riders and still having some trails to challenge the more advanced rider,” Arlinghaus said. Long-sustained climbs lead to rewarding descents. Going down, beginners can take it nice and slow, while advanced riders can pedal hard for super speed. “That’s something that’s unique to the Midwest, and that’s something people are willing to travel for,” Arlinghaus said. For a challenge, there is Schooner Trace, one of the toughest trails in the eastern United States. Its width of 6 to 8 inches cut into steep sideslopes leaves little room for error,

plus a plethora of rocks and logs, are reasons why no one has ever finished the trail without getting off their bike at least once. An example of an easy ride is the Pine Loop Trail. Juillerat said at age 2, her daughter completed it on a Strider bike, which contains no pedals. She “Fred-Flintstoned it,” Juillerat said. In addition to the state park, mountain biking also is offered at eXplore Brown County, Gnaw Bone Camp and in the Hoosier National Forest.
On the road
Eric Brodell, a Bloomington resident and salesman and mechanic at Revolution Bike & Bean in Bloomington, enjoys Brown County and the state park for a different reason – the roads. “There are obviously tons of roads there great for riding and training,” he said. Brodell goes to Brown County three or four times a week in the summer. His preferred roads are ones less traveled by cars and trucks that offer plenty of hills and curves. “I love the descents, the

huge climbs. They’re just everywhere,” he said. Over the past five years, Brown County businesses have shown a change in attitudes toward their visitors. Today, Brown County is more than arts and crafts. It is an outdoor recreation destination. “As the trails have become more popular and more cyclists have come into town, you’ve really started to see this change in how the mountain bikers are perceived,” Juillerat said. Tania and Jonathan run a company called Sub-9 Productions. Together, they spearheaded biking tourism in Nashville and Brown County by talking with local businesses about what it means to have mountain bikers as patrons, and worked with the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau to establish mountain bikerfriendly criteria. Mountain bikers seeking overnight lodging come with unique needs, like a secure place to store their expensive bikes and certain height clearances for roof racks. Also, lodging facilities need to be willing to “put up with dirty, stinky and potentially bloody people,” the criteria say. CVB Executive Director Jane

Ellis said numerous businesses signed the CVB’s criteria, and other cyclists noticed. “Every year we see something more and more that shows that Nashville is becoming more and more bike-friendly,” Juillerat said. Tad and Sarah Armstrong discovered a need for a bike shop, so in 2013 they opened Hesitation Point Bike & Backcountry in downtown Nashville. The shop offers bikes, safety gear and riding clothes, as well as bike tune-ups and repairs. Hesitation Point and Bear Hardware now offer bike rentals. “As this started growing, we saw some huge potential here,” Ellis said. In 2013, the CVB spent $35,000 on an advertising campaign targeting mountain bikers and other outdoor adventurers. One ad reads, “Single track minds are always welcome here.” The CVB also awarded the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association a $1,000 grant to advertise the Brown County Breakdown and placed Brown County posters, bumper stickers and coasters in bike shops and microbreweries throughout the state. Based upon the number of bikes atop vehicles in Nashville, and other indicators such as revenue from the innkeeper’s tax and the food and beverage tax, Ellis believes the campaign is working. Arlinghaus loves that Brown County has begun to realize its economic potential. “It benefits us if what we do benefits the local economy, because then we get support from the local community to develop more trails; we get support from the parks system to get more trails. It’s also beneficial to our users, because when they come to town, they get amenities that they like,” he said. Arlinghaus and his friends and family want a nice cabin to stay in, a good microbrewery to drink and dine in, and plenty of shopping opportunities. He said Brown County now offers those amenities. “It’s pretty neat to see those changes,” he said.

Nashville Fudge Kitchen Debbie Bartes plies dark, sugary batter across a cool, gray marble slab. In her hands is a long, flat garden trowel, which she uses to fold and shift the hardening fudge. Every piece of fudge sold in the store is made using a traditional technique that traces its roots back to a century-old candy-making mistake. “It started in 1919, when a candy maker messed up a batch of caramel, Bartes says. Fudge is heated at a temperature about 10 degrees cooler than caramel. Bartes and her husband learned the craft when they took over the business about 10 years ago. She has since traveled all over the Midwest taking classes on different forms of confectionery, both traditional and modern.

Fruitdale Market Along State Road 135 toward Morgantown, there is a little shack of a gas station. Out front are three gas pumps that might look familiar to drivers of a certain age. “There are people who are like, ‘How do you work?’” says store co-owner Debbie Guffey. “Younger ones have never ever seen ones like this.” Modern pumps are computer-controlled, with options for credit card sales and loyalty cards. Most can distribute multiple kinds of gas. These don’t do any of that. Each pump only handles one kind of fuel. You have to flip up the handle to start pumping. The pumps came with the business when the Guffeys bought it four years ago. “We never had the money to replace them,” Debbie says.

Brown County Weavery Sally Baldwin has two large mechanical looms in the back of her Franklin Street shop. She imports many of the items she sells from Central and South America, but the majority are crafted on these machines. Other area weavers use similar equipment. The devices operate by passing a wooden shuttle wrapped in colored yarn behind other threads of material. An arm then swings forward, interweaving the cords of fabric. Baldwin also spins some of her own yarn from the fur of animals that she raises at her home.

Broomcorn Johnny’s Brian Newton is one of the few remaining makers of traditional handmade brooms left in the United States. He sits on a handmade bench, holding a bundle of multicolored broomcorn. It’s a stiff, tough relative of sorghum grass. To his left sits a 4-foot-tall, vise-like machine called a broom press, of aged, varnished wood and time-blackened iron. It grips the bristles, flattens and holds them in place so that Newton can sew evenly across. The patent date on it is 1878. Nearby behind a chain is another large machine called a kick winder. This one dates to 1903. It holds the handle and the bristle together. An attached spindle feeds out wire. Newton presses a pedal at the base of the machine. This slowly spins the handle, winding it around the bristles and the handle.

f you look down when crossing over Salt Creek into Nashville on State Road 46, you’re likely to see movement under the bridge. Since late October, in every kind of weather, the Salt Creek Trail has beckoned runners, saunterers, bikers, strollers, scooters and dog-walkers. The paved, handicap-accessible, ¾-mile path runs along the wide, scenic creek bed, from CVS, at the junction of Van Buren Street/State Road 135 North and State Road 46 East, to the Brown County YMCA, on Hawthorne Drive near the Brown County IGA. The official trailhead is at the YMCA; parking is not allowed for trail users at CVS. While Brown County State Park

and Yellowwood State Forest’s trails are well-known among visitors – many of whom come here just because of them – the Salt Creek Trail attracts different types of users. “The other trails we have are not paved and not accessible, and most of them are dangerous to run on, dangerous to bike on, and you can’t wheelchair on them,” said Tom Tuley, chairman of the Salt Creek Trail Committee. The Salt Creek Trail, so far, is built on level ground, so it’s an easy walk for children with their little legs or folks who wouldn’t think of themselves as the hiking type. Locals, too, have been using it as a free, convenient way to get in a little exercise. Several benches were installed along the route, allowing for relaxing views of the creek. One was carved out of a tree by Nashville chain saw artist Chris Trotter in the form of a giant hand. Picnic tables dot the trail, and a local garden club will plant native vegetation along it, too. The path was built with a mixture of federal funds and local donations. Getting this far has taken 10 years. The other three planned phases shouldn’t take that long; two of them are nearly fully funded. When finished, the 2.5-mile trail will link downtown Nashville and Brown County State Park. The trailhead on the easternmost edge is planned near the state park’s swimming pool parking lot. That leg will end at Brown County Schools’ Eagle Park property, where the district’s ball diamonds, soccer field and cross country course are, along State Road 46 East. Phase III will link Eagle Park and the YMCA. Phase IV will be a spur from the YMCA under State Road 46 to the Brown County High School campus. The final completion date for the entire project is unknown, but phases will be open for use as they are finished – allowing visitors to easily discover parts of Nashville beyond, but not far, from downtown.

Learn more local history When visitors tour the Pioneer Village and History Center in the heart of downtown Nashville, they can pick up a one-sheet pamphlet titled “A History of Brown County.” But there’s so much more to learn and to see. The Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Brown County Historical Society are talking about developing a self-guided history trail that would point out 10 or so historical sites around downtown. The Banner Brummett House, for instance, was the first house built in Brown County, in 1830. It’s still inhabited, and it’s just three blocks west of the courthouse on North Johnson Street. Several other historic homes on Van Buren, Franklin and Jefferson streets also are still being used, as retail shops and inns. A historic artist studio trail may also be developed. But it and the history

tour are still in the discussion stages, the CVB reported in mid-January. One sure addition in the coming months is the new History Center, under construction downtown across from the Pioneer Village on Gould Street.
The $5 million, 18,000-square-foot building is designed with locals and visitors in mind, to include displays about all facets of Brown County history as well as an extensive archive and genealogy research room. Its projected completion date is this fall.

Nashville was designated as one of the state’s five Cultural Districts in 2012. That’s a little-known fact that local groups intend to spread. Brown County is culturally special in that its artists and craftsmen aren’t located all in one place. A selection of their wares, and some of their studios, are in downtown Nashville, but dozens of others are scattered around the county – like a wheel hub and spokes. Two “back roads” studio tours, from May 9 to 18 and Oct. 1 to 31, direct visitors to working artist studios in and outside Nashville. Maps for the free, self-guided tours are provided in brochures, which will be available at the Visitors Center downtown and at browncountystudiotour.com. Year-round, Brown County and Nashville businesses that either make their own products or sell a majority of Indiana-made products will also become more visible. They will get a leaf-shaped sign to display, which will contain a QR code that can be scanned for more information about art studios, public art pieces, entertainment venues and even historic sites in Brown County. Those signs might be up and working by this fall.
