The Nashville House If you’re looking to fill your larder with apple butter, honey and molasses, your first stop should be the shop attached to the Nashville House restaurant, at the corner of Main and Van Buren streets. Kathi Smith starts work on these fall treats months in advance. “We usually make it while we’re shut down in the winter,” she said. Their honey is bought from beekeepers in Martinsville and their sorghum comes

Busted Knuckle and Six Foot Blonde. Come fall, Big Woods will roll out the return of several seasonal favorites and a lineup of new ones. Hunter’s Moon Pumpkin Ale tastes just like a slice of spiced pumpkin pie. It’s been a seasonal favorite at both the brewery and pizzeria. Martin Gradolf is the brewmaster at Big Woods’ downtown Nashville location. “I get emails from people wanting to plan their trip around the release of our pumpkin ale,” he said. He has a few other ideas for this year. see Fall Feast page 26

Brown County Winery There’s nothing as tasty on a cool fall night as a cup of hot mulled wine, and Brown County Winery offers its own special blend, mixing cinnamon, orange peel, cloves, allspice and orange oil. Visitors can enjoy this mix at the winery on State Road 46 or in Brown County Winery’s tasting room in downtown Nashville. Or customers can take home a box of teabags filled with mulling spices. Several seasonal favorites also will be offered, including a variety of fruit wines made from plums, apples and cranberries. Owner Cynthia Schrodt said sweet dessert wines, such as the Old Barrel Port, make for excellent cool weather treats. The winery also offers two wines specifically for the fall season, Autumn Red and Autumn White, which are dry and crisp.

Sweetea’s Need a midday pick-me-up after a long day of shopping, wining and dining? “Fall is definitely tea time,” said Sweetea’s owner Laura Boyer. During the fall, the shop on South Van Buren Street serves several fall-themed flavors like gingerbread, pumpkin, sassafras and harvest apple spice. It also offers spiced hot chocolate and apple cider. The restaurant can host tea parties for groups of visitors.

The Sunshine Shack opened late last October near the corner of Main and Van Buren streets, missing most of the fall tourism season. Co-owner Cheryl Ferguson has spent the intervening year preparing with a variety of fall foods. For a quick, hearty meal, try bratwurst boiled in a rotating selection of
Indiana craft beers. In the fall, stop for a gingerbread snack. This fall, the Sunshine Shack will be offering hot and cold mulled apple cider made with locally grown apples and homemade spiced hot chocolate. “Our goal is to offer affordable food for families,” Ferguson said. “We want people to be able to order a brat, ice cream and a cider and spend $5 or $6.”

The only way to make the best fall foods is to have the right ingredients. They don’t come any fresher than straight from the farmer, and that’s what you get when you visit the Bean Blossom Farmer’s Market at the intersection of state roads 135 North and 45. “Everything here is made or grown in Indiana,” said market coordinator Rich Hill. The weekly outdoor market runs until the last weekend of October and involves growers, bakers, beekeepers and a weekly cookout hosted by St. David’s Episcopal Church. “We see a lot of corn, garden tomatoes, pumpkins and gourds,” Hill said. Mingled with the farmers, local craftspeople offer their wares, while a rotating selection of musicians provides entertainment.

Gingerbread Start planning now for popular gingerbread cabin contest in November Staff Reports
Y
ou might not be thinking about Christmas now, but some other Brown County visitors certainly are. The fifth annual Gingerbread Log Cabin Competition and Exhibit will take place Nov. 22 through Dec. 6 at the Brown County Inn. Every year, county visitors have won top prizes. Registration is required. This year, the competition will be divided into three categories: adults (older than 18), children (ages 8 to 18) and families. The deadline for registration is Nov. 19. Judging and the awards ceremony will take place Nov. 22. All rules and registration information, plus the registration form, can be found at createitwithgingerbread.com. All entries will remain on display for free viewing by the public. Viewers will cast votes for the People’s Choice Award. This year, a Winner’s Circle will show-
case creations made by past winners. Those creations will not be judged. All entries and the Winner’s Circle will be auctioned, with proceeds going to benefit Mother’s Cupboard Food Pantry in Bean Blossom, which feeds 190 to 200 families daily. Now is the time for contestants to start building entries or to try a new design before the busy holiday season. Not sure where to start? Wilton representative Brandie Baron will teach a class on “Decorating Basics of Fondant” from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at the Brown County Inn. The deadline to register is Sept. 16. Participants must bring their own kitchen tools. Questions can be sent to the instructor at brandiebaron@gmail.com. A children’s workshop also will be taught again this year. Baron will provide premade gingerbread houses, see Gingerbread page 29
28

Gingerbread continued from page 28 and the children will focus on decorating with fondant. It will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 15 at Brown County Presbyterian Church. The registration deadline is Nov. 12. Both classes have a fee of $20 and require registration. A minimum of 10 participants is needed for each class. For children participating in the class who wish to enter the competition Nov. 22 at
the Brown County Inn, 18-inch bases will be available and the entry fee waived. Registration and fees for both classes can be mailed to Create It With Gingerbread Club, 636 Freeman Ridge Road, Nashville, IN 47448. Checks should be made payable to Create It With Gingerbread Club. Fees will be reimbursed if a class is canceled due to low enrollment.

Construction ending, but real work is beginning at new Brown County History Center
Just north of Locust Lane on East Gould Street, a squat red building sits stuffed with tidbits of Brown County history. Photographer Frank Hohenberger’s cameras and enlargers are crammed into boxes. Printing presses from the old days fill a middle hallway. Bins lining the walls of the eastern-most room overflow with birth records, Census rolls, newspapers from decades past, books of obituaries and historical records of all varieties. see history page 34

Nooks are filled with old farming utensils, crannies with cardboard displays and yellowing photographs of long-gone logging villages. On one shelf sits a 3-footlong cast iron key to the old log jail. “This is Brown County’s attic,” said Barb Livesey. “And it’s all in boxes right now.” This is the current Brown County History Center. Since December, a construction crew has been working on a two-story replacement next door to the current history center. The $5 million building is on schedule for completion by the middle of October.

Plans are in the works for a small opening ceremony in November. Construction committee member Rob Coulter said early summer weather put the project slightly ahead of schedule. “There was an awful lot of rock and some problems with backfill,” Coulter said. “But right now, construction is right on time.” The completed building will include permanent museum space on the first floor and meeting space available on the second floor. But it will be about six months before visitors can enjoy it all. “We have stuff spread all over town,” Livesey said. “As soon as they say it’s see history page 36

done, we’re going to have two or three weeks to empty the red building.” The existing building packed with all of Brown County’s memorabilia will be demolished to make room for outdoor event and parking space. That will leave volunteers scrambling just to empty the old building and fill the new. When the new facility opens, plans call for a variety of displays ranging from visiting artist studios and galleries to a log cabin museum. There are also plans for a gift shop. Large meeting spaces will be available for various uses from conferences to weddings. The building includes two kitchens, one for staff and visitors and another for caterers. The building also will house the history center’s large collection of vital and historical records. Livesey said that initially the only public exhibits will be two display windows facing Gould Street, while volunteers work to organize and populate the rest of the center. Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | FALL 2014
By BEN SKIRVIN n photos by Megan O’Bryan Kimberly Malar was trapped in the tornado that blasted through Washington County in 2012. The National Weather Service reported winds in excess of 170 mph. A factory building was stripped down to its foundations, sheets of aluminum scattered miles away. A nearby one-story brick home was flattened, and its family reported numerous missing or dead cows from its fields. All told, the tornado cut a swath through three counties, wrecking homes, destroying power lines and killing seven people. “I watched all these firefighters, watched all these doctors from Indiana come down with triage supplies,” Malar said. After the tornado, she connected with friends in Brown County who were helping her cope with posttraumatic stress disorder. She started visiting the county on a regular basis.
That’s when she noticed that Brown County had no paid firefighters and only three ambulance crews in the county at any one time, including one crew that operates out of the Cordry Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department. That got her thinking about what would happen in Brown County if a tornado or major disaster, similar to the one that swept through her hometown, were to strike. “Brown County is an old county with a lot of history,” Malar said. “It could all be gone in a second.” And so was born the Great Brown County Shootout. The multiday event involves a wide variety of fundraising activities, from a golf tournament to a series of rifle, pistol, muzzleloader and even air rifle and paintball competitions. Malar said the goal is not necessarily just to raise money. see Fundraiser page 43

Fundraiser continued from page 41 It’s as much about providing support to first responders. “Every county has its conflicts,” Malar said. “But when these people get called for something like a house fire, people put their differences aside.” She said supporting volunteer firefighters and first responders is especially important in an area like Brown County, which is not only responsible for yearround residents but also for keeping scores of visitors safe. Chris Henderson is the EMS commander in Brown County. He said all the agencies have equipment that is outdated and in need of replacement. For example, the six volunteer fire departments are looking to update

the system they use to fill air tanks. He would also like to see newer Jaws of Life technology available to fire and EMS members. Last year, about 100 people participated in shooting events, and 300 to 400 people attended an end-of-the-day concert. Henderson said bad weather discouraged many people from participating in last year’s golf scramble. Overall, the inaugural event raised about $11,000, which was split among the six volunteer fire departments, the Brown County Sheriff ’s Reserves and Brown County EMS. Each agency received a check for about $1,000. With the support of locals and visitors, organizers hope the event will prove even more popular in its second year. see Fundraiser page 44
