By SUZANNAH COUCH

he wood shop buzzed, not with saws, but with conversation and laughter on a Wednesday night. About 25 Brown County artists were nestled into a workshop in southern Brown County, admiring the space where Mark Schaffer creates his art: furniture. “This has just been a dream of mine that just happened,” Schaffer says about his workspace. This shop, at 600 square feet, is much bigger than his shop in Indianapolis, where he and his wife primarily live. They built their Brown County cabin in 2001. “If you’re here long enough, this will be small, too,” member Jerry Forshee says. “My wife is deathly afraid of that,” Schaffer adds with a smile. The Brown County Woodworking Club has existed since 2007, said one of the founding members, Bill Walters. It has more than 70 members on its roster. “A lot of the woodworking clubs have officers, they have dues, there’s a lot of things that are organized in a way that doesn’t fit the Brown County way,” Walters said. “Brown County folks said, ‘We don’t want to do that; we want to meet once a month and talk about woodworking.” continued

Woodworkers continued They ask Schaffer about his filtration system, whether he chooses to kiln- or air-dry his wood, and enough other topics to fill the 90-minute meeting easily. After the meeting ends, everyone makes their way into Schaffer’s log cabin to admire the walls of the kitchen that are lined with hickory, which he sawed after the trees were dropped to bring electricity to the cabin. “It’s social more than anything,” said Roy Shea, who’s been attending meetings since the beginning. “It’s sharing knowledge and specific things about woodworking.” Shea retired after 33 years as the director of the Indianapolis Zoo and moved to Brown County in 1999. He has been a woodworker “one way or another” since he was 13, but he became more serious about it when he moved here. His grandfather bought him his first band saw. His specialty is making folk instruments – mandolins, fiddles and parlor-

You can find them at Weed Patch Music Co. on Main Street. “You’re creating something from raw material, basically the same as an artist does with paint on a canvas,” Shea said. “You’re putting your feelings into that,” woodworker Joe Watson said of his art, which he’s been doing for about 10 years. He trained under and worked for woodworker Darrin Kean after moving to Brown County. Watson’s specialty is the smaller, detailed projects. He’s currently working on a Pennsylvania spice box, which stands at 20 inches tall and includes 10 or 12 drawers with a door. “I follow these plans, but the final little things on it, it’s me. I’m putting myself into it,” he said. You may recognize his handiwork if you’ve ever sat at one of the Muddy Boots cafe tables that slide out. “I sit around and have coffee with the old-timers. They go, ‘Doggone it, every time somebody comes in we have to pick up a table and move it together. Joe, come up with something,’” he remembered. And so he did. Then the owner wanted five more. After working in a steel mill in northern Indiana for 20 years, Watson enjoys being able to pay extra care to what his final piece looks like, compared to getting the job done with and out the door in a factory. “I’m doing something with my hands, and you get to step back,

wife, Ann, keeps him busy even when the holidays aren’t around the corner. “Like, she wanted two end tables in our bedroom, so I made the end tables for her. Then she wanted a full-length mirror, so I made the fulllength mirror.” Recently, she asked if he would make 12 napkin holders; he made 23. Walters also enjoys turning wood to make bowls, ice cream scoops and stairway spindles. “It’s one of those easy things to teach, compared to somebody says, ‘I want to learn to make furniture.’ It’s a little more exact,” he said. He’s been a woodworker since he was a shop student in junior high school. Today’s project? A cabinet that will let him flip between a mortise and a miter saw when working on one of his projects, from Adirondack chairs to a storage case for dulcimers. Walters tries to spend at least 15 to 20 hours a week in his shop.

Sometimes, Ann is with him. She pulls a shoebox down from a shelf. Inside are multiple jigsaw puzzles, which she made from postcards pasted to wood. Bill doesn’t mind sharing the space, and like other woodworking club mem-

bers, he thrives on sharing his art with anyone who wants to learn, even if it’s during a holiday gathering. “At Christmas, I could not find (my family) unless I went to the shop, because they were all in there or making something,” he said.

Schwab’s Fudge 102 S. Van Buren St.

Owner Sylvia Shroyer slices sample bites of vanilla pecan fudge for visitors to Schwab’s Fudge. One of the women asks to try the Jack Daniels chocolate pecan fudge. She said she can really taste the whiskey. She ends up buying a slice. Schwab’s fudge is made from scratch in large copper pots before it is worked out on the nearby tables. A pound of fudge, or two slices, costs around $11.95. For the holidays, she has red boxes a person can fill with either four quarters of fudge or two slices. Or if fudge doesn’t fit their fancy, customers can also have bags of the malt balls, chocolate-covered almonds, cherries or cashews placed in the holiday box. Don’t forget the taffy or rock candy. Shroyer’s favorite is the peanut butter chocolate and peanut butter fudge flavors. “People come back year after year and say it’s the best they ever had. …They think it’s a good value, too,” she said.

Nashville Fudge Kitchen 175 S. Van Buren St.

At the Nashville Fudge Kitchen, holiday boxes are waiting to be filled with popcorn, fudge and candy. Ranging from $5 to $50, boxes can be stuffed with whatever your stomach desires. Or if one is not enough, a holiday box tower is always an option, owner Debbie Bartes said. Smaller boxes are sized for packaging homemade buckeyes or caramels. Feeling extra festive? The kitchen also makes cranberry nut and cherry cordial fudge. There’s also peppermint popcorn in a reindeer bag with a red bow. “If you just get a slice or two of fudge, some caramels and maybe a buckeye, you’re going to make them happy,” Bartes said. Everything’s homemade at the Nashville Fudge Kitchen. “They like to watch us make the candy. We put a lot of love in it and we pay attention to details. We try hard. They can get a big variety of sweet things,” she said. Bartes’ favorites right now are the snickerdoodle popcorn and dark chocolate walnut fudge. “Tomorrow I’ll say something else,” she said. If you don’t feel like taking a trip into town, just contact the store for “stress-free” shipping, Bartes said.

The Candy Dish 61 W. Main St.

If you ask manager Julie Gunther, any piece of candy or fudge you find in The Candy Dish is the perfect holiday present for your sweetie. “Everything we don’t make is award-winning, and then everything that we do make has been voted the best in Nashville several years running. We always win the confectionery award,” she said. Gunther and her employees can create a gift bag or box around any piece of candy. Popular items include buckeyes, almond butter toffee and truffles. “Our almond butter toffee is so popular, it’s sold all over the country,” she said. The Candy Dish uses chocolate that contains non-GMO soy and cane sugar, and no preservatives, waxes or fillers, Gunther said. “We try really, really hard to buy only the very purest food ingredients that we can and make everything by hand,” she said. They also make special goods for the holidays, including peppermint bark, peppermint malt balls and peppermint rum taffy. Christmas orders weighing over five pounds must be made no later than

Thanksgiving. “If it’s under five pounds, we can always do lastminute things,” Gunther said. The Candy Dish can also ship customized gift bags. Gift bags can include bottles of liquor. “We’ll pretty much do anything anybody wants in a gift bag. If they don’t like our containers, they are certainly welcome to bring what they want,” she said. continued

Walk into the Nashville Candy Store and you will be greeted with a smile and pops of color. Then if you buy a pound of fudge, you’ll get a half-pound free. Tell them you read it here. From $10 to $30, customers can perfect their own holiday basket this season. All of the store’s packaged candy can be in the basket, including Nerds Candy Rope, Juicy Drop candy and Jelly Bellies. Take your pick. If you want fudge in the holiday basket, it may cost you a little extra, said manager Kathrynne Wagler. The fudge is all made in the store. Flavors include the favorites like chocolate and peanut butter, but also outof-the-ordinary flavors like carrot cake. Wagler’s favorite is the dark chocolate. The store has been around since 1973. “It’s so clean and it’s so friendly. They will be greeted by friendly people, and we have a large selection of candy. Our cabinets are filled with different types of candy, and our fudge is delicious,” Wagler said.

Marc Rudd, owner of the Jack & Jill Nut Shop, serves a bag of nuts to a customer. The top seller is cashews, which are warmed and roasted in the store. Other favorites include the fancy mix, peanuts and pecans. The shop even has sugar-free treats like fudge, turtles and toffee. Original fudge and chocolate covered pretzels are also on hand.

Jack & Jill Nut Shop 78 S. Van Buren St.

If the sweetie in your life is not a fan of sweets, you may want to take a stroll over to Jack & Jill Nut Shop for a bag of warm roasted cashews. Cashews, the fancy mix, peanuts and pecans are the top sellers for the nut shop, owner Marc Rudd said. He finishes dumping a bag of cashews into a deep fryer as he talks with a visitor. When he scoops them out, he warns them they may be hot, but most disregard the warning, saying it won’t be long before they’re gone anyway. A pound of nuts ranges from $6 to $16. All of the nuts are roasted in the store. “We do our own. We do it all here,” Rudd said. Sugar-free treats are also available, like fudge and toffee, along with the regular fudge and chocolatecovered pretzels. When asked what his favorite is, Rudd admits, “I eat them all.”

S

UPHILL BATTLE

ince this is its first year, no one has run the Brown County Hilly Half before. But many local runners have long enjoyed the challenging roads and trails of Brown County State Park. DeAnne Weaver — a veteran of the Boston Marathon — has wanted a distance race in the state park for years. The park has plenty of challenges and great views to make a run interesting. “The park is paradise for runners,” she said. “It has everything runners look for.” Running in Brown County in general guarantees beautiful views, said Lydia Miller, who recently bore the Indiana Bicentennial Torch through the state park. Brown County State Park — the state’s largest — has views that are simply amazing.

One thing runners can expect is a literal uphill battle. The first 2 or so miles of the course are mostly uphill, with varying levels of steepness and a few dips and flat spots. Yet, that also means that the last 2 miles will be almost entirely downhill. Weaver said the 5K will be unusual in that it is uphill for the first half, with a downhill return. It

oN YoUR FEET For those unfamiliar with running hilly terrain, there are precautions to keep in mind. Miller advised that runners take their footwear into consideration for the long downhill. Shoes will need to have sufficient traction to keep from slipping up on the hill, and depending on the forecast, runners might consider accessories that slide over shoes to give additional traction. While the many colors of Brown County’s changed leaves are a big attrac-

should give runners of the shorter race something to look forward to. Some runners might be surprised by how much of the course — with the road traveling the top of a ridge — is flat, Weaver said. “A lot of people are surprised about that,” she said. “They think the whole park is very hilly.”

tion for visitors, runners negotiating the winding hills should take note of the ones on the ground as well, Weaver said. Especially if they are wet, leaves can easily trip a runner up and send them sliding. Slips and trips aren’t the only concern for dealing with Brown County’s hills, Miller said. Running downhill — especially for such long stretches — can be more exhausting than people anticipate and can be hard on a runner’s legs.

STAY CooL

It may sound obvious, but runners really need to think about how they dress in early November in Brown County, Miller and Weaver said. As the last race of the local running season, what has worked over the rest of the season may not be sufficient for the Hilly Half. Weaver said runners may find themselves cold at the beginning of the run but quickly overheating, so dress in layers. Miller recommended wearing materials that will wick away sweat, rather than holding it next to the skin.

couple of big feet will lead little feet on a race Friday night in Nashville. Ronald McDonald will serve as the “special starter” of the Brown County YMCA Hilly Half Fun Kids Run on Nov. 11, sponsored by McDonald’s. Preschoolers to sixth-graders

can participate in the run on the paved Salt Creek Trail which starts at the YMCA and ends at the downtown CVS. The course for preschoolers and kindergartners is a halfkilometer. For first- and secondgraders, it’s a 1K; for third- and fourth-graders, it’s a 1.5K; and for fifth- and sixth-graders, a 2K.

High school cross-country team members will be there to help, said Kim Robinson, YMCA executive director. And if Mom or Grandpa want to run alongside for some encouragement, that’s OK, too, she said. Registration is $5 per participant; a T-shirt is $5 extra. Signup can be done in advance at

the YMCA or before the event. A parent or guardian will need to sign a waiver. All participants will receive a medal. The school with the most participants will receive a traveling trophy and bragging rights until next year’s race, Robinson said.

thinGs to see AlonG the rAce route From the start of the Hilly Half, runners will encounter history and sweeping views at Brown County State Park. ■ The two-story Lower Shelter House, just south of the race starting area, and the Saddle Barn, to the north, were both constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. ■ The race course starts with about two miles of uphill climbs, though there are a few level breaks along the way. Racers in the 5K will get their relief on the way back. For those in the 10K and Hilly Half, about 1.7 miles in they will have the first payback to their efforts, as a broad, beautiful vista opens to their right. ■ The hardest of the early climbs finishes about 2 miles into the course, and runners can keep an eye out for the Aynes House as a sign they are almost there. The Indiana governor’s vacation home was originally home to the property manager of the game preserve that preceded the park. It is named after the Aynes family, whose log cabin stood on the site before the state purchased the land in 1916. You’ll have covered about 11.2 miles when you see Aynes House the second time, and it’s (almost) all downhill from there. ■ Not far past the Aynes House, around 2.1 miles into the course, runners will reach more of the park’s spectacular views as the forest on either side opens into deep vistas of the famous hills o’ Brown. ■ Around 2.7 miles in, runners will come across the park office, where they will catch a glimpse of the 90-foot fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The

tower is still open for visitors to climb and get a bird’s eye view of the park. Runners will pass this point again about 10.5 miles into the course. ■ Just past and across from the park office and fire tower, runners will pass the Hoosier’s Nest. Now a shelter house available to be reserved by park guests, the log cabin was reconstructed from an original home that was on the property. ■ Past the Hoosier’s Nest, runners may find more flat, open ground than they expected. Weed Patch Hill is on the ridgetop and host to a DNR wildflower field. It is also famed for its views, and runners will pass multiple vistas looking east. ■ After passing through the park’s campgrounds and coming back out, runners will be about 7.6 miles into the race when they climb a rise in the road. That’s the location of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp used by workers during the Great Depression. None of the original structures remain, though a flagpole marks the spot where Civilian Conservation Corps workers raised the flag each morning, and looks out over a vista of wooded hills. ■ Runners will be almost 8 miles into the course when they reach the final turn-around, just steps short of Hohen Point. Though runners will miss the wide-open views from Hohen during the race, there is another vista to catch just off to the right near the turn-around. From here on, it’s a windy 5.1 miles back to the finish.

They’ll be glass suncatchers, “instead of a sit-on-a-shelf trophy which a lot of runners get and they have too many of,” Jim said. “(Being unique) is kind of the signature Brown County thing anyway.” Jim estimated that each suncatcher would take about 30 minutes to make. He said the family was honored to be asked to make the awards. And that reminded Jim of a story. About 10 years ago, the former Nashville town marshal told him the Lawrence Family had been the victims of a crime. He’d discovered some items stolen from their shop in a car. “I remember looking at him and told him after 40 years of trying to make high-quality glass, it’s really kind of a compliment to make something worth stealing,” Jim quipped.

The light of the fire illuminates his face and disappears as quickly as it appeared. He places the small glass piece in an oven next to many others he has already blown that morning. “The quality of the glass improves the quicker the craftsman finishes,” Lawrence says as he prepares to fire up the torch for another carousel horse. “It’s not like with cabinetry where you want the guy to take a long time. Glass is done very, very quickly.” The horses will be placed on a carousel that will be used to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Poor Jack Amusements, Lawrence said. Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | WINTER 2016

Feeling cooped up?

Work out! No reason to stay in when there’s so much to do outside, trainers say

By BEN KIBBEY hen the cold weather hits and the days grow short, hibernating may seem like a much better idea than exercise. “There’s no reason to come inside just because it’s winter,” said DeAnne Weaver, a personal trainer at the Brown County YMCA. “If you dress appropriately, with layers and synthetic clothes, exercising outside in the winter is very enjoyable.” With the stark, natural beauty and solitude of places such as Brown County State Park in winter, people who don’t take time to enjoy them are missing out, Weaver said. Erica Weddle, a personal trainer who operates Simply Fitness, said that places such as the free walking trails at Deer Run Park and the Salt Creek Trail provide options for those who don’t want to strike out on a park trail. “But I’ve also seen people bundle up and walk around the high school track,” she said. The personal health benefits of exercise may seem obvious, and the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. But exercise can also help to combat the lack of energy people often associate with the short, dark days of winter, Weaver said. Exercise boosts the metabolism and strengthens the heart, keeping those winter days from dragging on. “Your heart is a muscle, just like your biceps are,” Weddle said. Exercise that raises the heart rate gives it a chance to grow stronger. Exercise can create a feedback loop, giving a person

energy and motivation to stay active. Being inactive can do the opposite. A sedentary lifestyle leaves people with even less energy, Weaver said. As a bonus, the natural endorphins released by exercise help to promote a sense of well-being, she said. For exercising outside in the winter, Lydia Miller, a personal trainer at the YMCA, recommended workout clothes that are warm, yet wick sweat away from the skin. Some natural fibers that are good for holding in warmth tend to trap moisture as well. It’s important to keep those workout clothes handy, Miller said. As the days grow shorter and people return from work to a setting sun, having a packed bag in the car can help you get a workout in while you still have motivation to do it. Shifting a workout schedule can also help, Miller said. If it’s too dark in the evening, look for time in the morning or on a lunch break to fit in a workout. Technology offers some motivation through workout trackers, which record progress and set goals, Weaver said. Miller recommended finding someone else to be accountable to, whether that’s a workout partner or by taking a class. The relationships people develop with other members of a class give them something to look forward to beyond the exercise benefit, Weaver said, and they expect them to show up. And if the weather is just too much, there’s no reason not to do something at home, Weddle said. “You can plug in ‘beginner yoga’ on YouTube and be in the comfort of your own living room when there’s 10 inches of snow on the ground,” she said.

Sample high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout on the Salt Creek Trail From DeAnne Weaver, personal trainer This workout suggestion was originally printed in a Living Well series column in the Brown County Democrat newspaper in August 2014. You may need to modify some of these exercises for safety depending on ground conditions.

Warmup (at least 5 minutes)

Start at the Brown County YMCA trailhead with a slow walk and progress to a faster walk while doing some easy movements to prepare the body for the work ahead. Go through movements that use the major joints and muscles of the body: a high knee march, butt kicks, walking on toes, walking on heels, swinging arms forward and back and then reaching up overhead. Stop and rotate the ankles and wrists. Time your warmup so you end up back at the trailhead when you are done with your warmup. You should be sweating slightly. Don’t skip the warmup, as it will make all the exercises feel easier and help prevent injuries.

Strength stations

Do each station for 20 to 60 seconds depending on your fitness level, then progress to the next station by walking quickly or running. Aim to do each station for the same length of time. The whole circuit can be completed once or several times as your fitness improves.

No. 1

(picnic table at Y trailhead) STEPUPS — Step up and down on the picnic table seat, leading with right foot for half the time, then switching to the left.

No. 2

(at Stu Huffman Bench) T ARMS — Stand with arms straight out at shoulder height with palms up, squeeze shoulder blades down and back as

you pull your thumbs behind you. Continue to squeeze and release.

No. 3

(at hand-in-the-tree bench) PUSHUPS — Do pushups on the trail or with hands on the bench to modify.

No. 4

(next picnic table) SQUATS — With arms in front for balance, squat to (or above) bench seat, keeping head up and chest lifted.

No. 5

(bench on right) CRUNCHES — Lie on bench with knees bent and hands behind head or crossed over chest. Lift and lower chest.

No. 6

(on bridge) WALL SITS — Stand with back against railing with knees bent to 90 degrees. Hold this position. Do not hold your breath.

No. 7

(on concrete block retaining wall on right after the underpass) DIPS — Sit on wall (the lower the wall, the harder the exercise) with legs straight in front of you or bent for an easier version. Grasp front edge of block as you lower your hips close to wall while bending elbows to 90 degrees. Then, lift yourself back up by straightening arms. Run or jog around the post at the CVS trailhead to next station (back toward the Y).

No. 8

(by wooden trail sign by Brown County Inn) JUMPING JACKS — Perform full or half jacks (just one leg and both arms).

No. 9

(picnic table before bridge) PLANK — Do a front plank by holding your body in a tight, flat position with arms extended in front of you, hands and toes on the ground.

No. 10

(at handin-the-tree bench) LUNGES — Do front or back lunges. To do a front lunge, step out with a big step, bending the front leg to 90 degrees while keeping the torso upright. Then push down with front foot to push you back to standing. To do a back lunge, step back with a big step while bending the front knee to 90 degrees keeping the torso upright. Straighten front leg to return to standing. When you finish station No. 10, walk quickly or run to the YMCA trailhead where you can either begin another circuit or cool down.

Cool-down

Walk progressively slower for 5 minutes or more to allow the heart rate to return to a normal state. Stretch if desired. DeAnne Weaver is an American College of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer and fitness instructor at the Brown County Y. Her other “gym” is Brown County State Park, where she enjoys running, mountain biking and hiking.
