‘I hope it lasts forever’

Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival to celebrate 50th year in June By BEN KIBBEY

E

very year in Bean Blossom, bluegrass music has a family reunion. Bill Monroe is known as the father of the genre. Each June, the family he inspired carries it on. Jim Peva has been to every Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. When he first heard Monroe play “Watermelon Hangin’ on the Vine” in 1961, it was electric. “I think it was the fiddle more than anything,” he said. “You know, the hair just stood up on the back of my neck. It was something about the music, just grabbed me.” June 11 to 18 will be the 50th anniversary of the first festival Monroe hosted at the park that bears his name.

Best music school The first time Dan Harden heard his great-uncle play a banjo, he told his dad he had to have one. The next week, they bought a banjo from Sears for $43. Harden still has the receipt. At 13, he started taking lessons from his friend, Dave Hedrick, who was himself just 14. After about six months, Hedrick sent Harden to Roger Smith, who played fiddle and banjo with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in the late 1950s. After about a year, Smith told Harden he needed to finish his education in Bean Blossom. “You go up there, and that’s where you’ll learn,” he told him. Harden recalled the barn

that sat where the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum is now and the shows staged there every Sunday. “That’s where I cut my teeth,” he said. He compared the musical education one can receive at the bluegrass festival to getting a doctorate. “That’s one of the best training grounds in the world,” he said. “You got to see ‘em all, and if you didn’t understand somethin’, you’d go ask ‘em. They were glad to tell you.” The professionals genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to share their music, whether it was with the audience or a young kid just learning the craft, Harden said. He talked about Jesse McReynolds, the “Jesse” of the famed bluegrass duo Jim and Jesse.

Bluegrass continued A man who could find “800 different ways” to play the same song, McReynolds took such enjoyment out of working with aspiring musicians, Harden had to ask to be excused so he wouldn’t miss dinner. Bluegrass banjo legend J.D. Crowe told Harden that playing was like talking. “You don’t speak monotone, do you?” he asked a young Harden. “Well, you don’t play monotone neither.” “You emphasize different tones,” Harden said. “You play how you feel.” Many bluegrass musicians don’t read music, Harden said. He still doesn’t know how. As Crowe told him, “You have to play from the heart.” “I think that’s why people like it so much,” Harden said. “It’s almost like an interpretation every time you play.” Around the campfires at the bluegrass festival, that approach leads to jam sessions that are the musical equivalent of conversations. And they are open and welcoming, Harden said. “I still go up there and just watch and listen,” he said. “There’s always something different. Bean Blossom — you couldn’t find a better place. I hope it lasts forever.”

International

The bluegrass festival has drawn audiences and bands

Official historic site The Indiana Historical Bureau has approved a historical marker for the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park. Bill Monroe’s is one of eight sites in the state approved for the distinction this year, said Ken Birkemeier, a volunteer on the project. It was led by the Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society with assistance from volunteers at the music park. To get the marker approved, volunteers had to gather historical documentation of the importance of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe and the park, an effort that took many hours over several months. “It was a labor of love,” PVH President Ruth Reichmann said. No date has been set for the marker to be installed, but it is expected to be in by the end of the performance season.

from all over the world from the earliest days, Peva said. In 1971, bands from New Zealand and Japan played on the main stage. The sense of a family connection crosses those borders, Harden said.

Bluegrass continued During a recent festival, a Finnish band showed up without instruments. Strangers loaned them the instruments they needed to play. The international visitors carry the influence of Bill Monroe home with them, Peva said. The third-oldest bluegrass festival in the world — Bill Monroe’s is the oldest — was started by fans who took the music home to Japan, he said. “Bluegrass music has a universal appeal,” Peva said. “You find jam sessions where there’s people of all backgrounds: There’ll be professional people, there’ll be carpenters, there’ll be day laborers, there’ll be people that can’t even speak to each other because they can’t speak the same language. But they’re all playin’ the same music.”

Carry on

This will be Sarah Wasson’s 16th year at the bluegrass festival. She first caught the bluegrass bug when she was 12 years old. She comes every year with her husband, Rickey, whom she met through bluegrass. This will be her 11th year running the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Youth Boot Camp at the festival. A teacher by trade, Wasson sees the bootcamp as a way to pass the love down to the next generation. Last year, the camp had 83 children. It’s grown each year. Children are broken into groups based on age and ability,

and over two-and-a-half days are taught a song they will perform on the main stage of the festival. “It’s probably one of the biggest events at the festival, as far as pride in what is going on,” she said. “Because they’re the kids that are going to carry the music on.” It’s not just on stage that children are welcomed and encouraged, Wasson said. Children from her classes who are camping with their families will also go out and join in the nightly jam sessions around the campfires. “And all these jam sessions will stop and just ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ over those kids, even if they’re just a beginner kid learnin’ something new on a fiddle. It’s just how bluegrass people are,” she said.

Art all around Special events this summer focus on film, music, arts in nature

By SUZANNAH COUCH

D

o you like paintings? Music? Movies? You’re in luck. Brown County has it all for you this summer. The hills will be alive with artists painting in nature, downtown will sing when a concert series debuts and the Playhouse will be the coolest spot in town when the Arts Village Cinefest returns in June.

Arts in the Parks

If you see someone painting in Brown County State Park this summer, come over and say hello. Arts in the Parks is one of the many projects planned to celebrate Indiana’s bicentennial this year, as well as the centennial of state parks and the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Arts Commission.

30

Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | SUMMER 2016

“The purpose of the project is to bring art to those areas, but to (also) involve the community and to interact with the community (like) public events,” said Anabel Hopkins, one of the artists awarded a grant through the program. Ten projects were approved to take place in Brown County State Park. In addition to painting, they include demonstrations on dyeing fabrics and making pottery, drama and music performances, and workshops. “An artist just going out in the woods and hiding and painting isn’t really the idea. That’s why I’m doing most of my paintings in more public areas,” Hopkins said. She plans to depict scenes in Brown County State Park and Lake Monroe’s backwaters in pastel and acrylic. She also will host a painting workshop for the Brown County Enrichment for Teens Association Inc. that will include a hike, and a painting workshop for senior citizens. She plans to do a project or workshop once a month until Nov. 5, when her work will go on display. Her first project was painting the Strahl Lake Falls March 30 on a chilly morning. To her surprise, families and hikers were out anyway, she said. “They were so surprised to see an artist out painting. You don’t usually see something like that, so it was real exciting for them.” Some children stood around to watch Hopkins work. “The whole idea is to make art accessible to the public and to involve them in the state resources like the state parks and lakes and tie it all together,” she said. Hopkins plans to get signs printed to place at the entrance of the state park on the days she is painting, near the area where she is painting and at the spot where she is working to encourage people to interact with her and ask her questions, “so they know I’m not there to not be disturbed. I want people to come up and talk to me,” she said. To find where artists will be in the park and when, visit Brown County State Park’s website at in.gov/dnr/ parklake/2988.htm.

art continued Cinefest

Slip into the cool Brown County Playhouse June 18 to see what the Arts Village Cinefest is all about. Following the bicentennial trend, this year’s festival will focus on the history of Indiana and Brown County art with dashes of modern art in between. The festival begins the evening of June 17 at the Brown County Art Gallery. A showing of Lyn Letsinger-Miller’s film “Artists of Brown County” will start the evening, followed by a film about newspaperman and photographer Frank M. Hohenberger. He captured images of Brown County residents and their lives during the early 1900s. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served following commentary by Miller, president of the art gallery foundation. The cost will be $15. Saturday events will start with a $5 workshop on how to use a smartphone to shoot creative videos, at the Brown County Playhouse at 11 a.m. “It will be fun for everybody. He knows all of these apps you can use and special effects to make something great,” Hopkins said of workshop leader Tom Preston. “Then, they go out during the day and videotape around town and come back and have a slideshow at the end if they want their work to be shown,” she said. That afternoon, locals and visitors will be invited into the Playhouse to watch free documentaries about Indiana and Brown County art. They will be followed by a discussion with scholars, artists and relatives of artists featured in the documentaries. A video presentation of photography by Jerry Uelsmann, who specializes in photo montages, will follow the documentaries, before the slideshow of workshop participants’ videos begin. “We just don’t want it all to be about the past; we want to look to the future, too, and let people know what’s going on in the art world,” Hopkins said. Saturday night, “Renoir,” a 2013 feature film about the French artist, will play; tickets are $5. An after-party will close the festival at Big Woods Brewing Co.’s Big

Events cost $15 at the most; the documentaries are free to view. “We want people to come,” Hopkins said. “It’s for the community, and we don’t want them to have to pay a lot of money.” For more information on the Cinefest, visit artalliancebrowncounty.org or call Hopkins at 812-340-8781.

Concert series

When local musician Tim Meyer was traveling the United States and would mention he was moving to Brown County, the response was often the same. “People from San Francisco to Florida would mention to me, ‘Oh yeah? Well that’s where the bluegrass festival is, and didn’t they used to have a Little Opry? Didn’t they call it that?’ So, the musical reputation of the town is preceding,” he said. That thought in mind, Meyer approached the Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission about having an outdoor summer concert series downtown last summer. This year, it’s going to happen. The first will be May 28 at the Village Green Pavilion at Jefferson and Main streets. It will feature the Roger Bannister Trio, a bluegrass group. The free concerts will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. one Saturday a month in June, August, September and October. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs, but some seating will be available. Similar concert series can be found in Avon and Carmel, Meyer said. A Brown County resident for about three years, he splits his time between here and Indianapolis. “There’s a lot of talented folks in these parts, and we ought to try and showcase them,” he said. “I’ve been surprised as I’ve mentioned it to folks around here, not everybody is tuned into this musical scene that lives here. I think it’s a great match between the beautiful pavilion, these talented folks and our reputation for being a community with that history of art and music.”

Ice cream and coffee? Yes, please! Chocolate Moose/Brown County Coffee restaurant to open downtown this summer By BEN KIBBEY

combination ice cream and coffee shop is due to open in Nashville this summer in a long-vacant building on South Van Buren Street. Brown County Coffee is partnering with the Chocolate Moose, a walk-up ice cream shop in Bloomington. Staff will serve barista-style drinks made with Brown County Coffee and Chocolate Moose’s signature ice cream. Chocolate Moose already makes an ice cream using Brown County coffee. There will be plenty more opportunities for the two brands to complement each other, said Brown County Coffee owner Nick Schultz. One example: “affogato,” where espresso is poured over ice cream, much like chocolate syrup would be. Quick, simple sandwiches also will be on the menu. “There’s not a whole lot of models to go off of in what we’re trying to do,” said Justin Loveless, owner of the Chocolate Moose. The Bloomington Chocolate Moose has been operating since 1933, when Cletus May opened it as a full cafe after he lost his job during the Depression.

The original, walk-up ice cream stand still operates seasonally a few blocks west of Indiana University on Walnut Street. In the summer, it’s known for having lines so long that entertainment is provided for customers while they wait. There won’t be enough space at the Nashville location for the same extent of entertainment, but Loveless said he would like to maintain some of that atmosphere. “There’s always room for face painters, airbrush artists, small acoustic bands,” he said. The Nashville Chocolate Moose store also will stay open year-round, because it will have indoor seating as well as a drive-thru, Loveless said. Schultz started roasting coffee as a hobby about 10 years ago. It began with a few stories he read on the Internet, and soon he was buying home-roasting machinery. Today, Brown County Coffee has two commercial machines and, as Indiana’s third-largest coffee producer, roasts around a ton of coffee a week. Brown County Coffee is sold in several stores, at a Bloomington farmers market and in about 40 restaurants in and near Brown County. But this will be the first coffeehouse with the brand’s name. Loveless wants to get commuters between Bloomington and Columbus to make Nashville their regular morning coffee stop. Schultz is particularly excited about customers being able to get drive-thru espresso in Brown County; he’ll be custom-building the store’s espresso machine. Schultz envisions a place where people on their way to work can stop to fill their mugs without breaking the bank, or where local families can stop for a treat with the whole baseball team after a summer game. That vision makes Town Manager/ Economic Development Director Scott Rudd smile. “I can already picture people standing in line to get ice cream after they get off the (Salt Creek) trail,” he said. Loveless had originally hoped to open the restaurant in April, but construction was delayed after a leak was discovered in the roof, he said. Now, they are aiming for May and hoping for no further delays. Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | SUMMER 2016

By SUZANNAH COUCH f you find something unusual while exploring a Brown County trail or back road, should you pick it up and take it with you? Probably not, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources says, and if you don’t know what it is, definitely not. In March, a Brownsburg family hiking in Brown County State Park stumbled upon the skeletal remains of a large animal paw and decided to take the remains home. But after speaking with friends, they had second thoughts and became concerned that the remains might be human. They weren’t. But they are something unusual. “It is our belief the remains are that of a bear paw,” said Angela Goldman, public information officer for Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers. The family contacted the Brown County Sheriff ’s Department during the last week of March. The sheriff ’s department contacted the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The DNR called the Brown County coroner’s office. Coroner Earl Piper sent photos of the remains to a pathologist to make sure they weren’t human. “It was a big enough paw that it had to be, if it was a cat of some sort, it would have had to have been a fairly big cat, even bigger than a

bobcat,” Piper said. “Whatever it was, I wouldn’t have wanted to tangle with it.” He said what remained of the paw still had tissue on it. He said it looked like it had possibly been cooked. Goldman didn’t know how the remains arrived in the park, since there are no bears there. A DNR officer returned to the area where the remains were found and wasn’t able to find any more bear parts. A caller to the Brown County Democrat newspaper provided one possible explanation: Native American re-enactors at the Maple Syrup Festival in the park in early March had been making bear grease to help keep syrup from sticking to a pan and may have discarded bear remains in the woods. As the weather warms up and people begin to venture into the woods, Goldman suggests that if anyone finds something interesting, like remains of an animal, it is best to identify it before taking it home. That item may not be legal to possess. “There are regulations that pertain to the possession of several of Indiana’s wild animals,” she said. If a person suspects remains to be human, they should leave them alone and contact law enforcement immediately, she said.

had Guffey’s motto is “Let Guff deliver your stuff,” and “stuff ” is about as broad a category as it sounds. He’ll deliver just about anything that can fit in his minivan, from a pizza to a load of groceries. And if things progress as he’d like them to, he might add larger items. Guffey talked about using a trailer, such as the one he uses to move his race car, in order to deliver tractors, cars or sheds around the county. Currently he delivers from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. He doesn’t deliver to every corner of the county, but for $3 in Nashville and $5 outside of Nashville, he will take anything as far as Belmont to the west, Bailey’s Bait and Tackle to the east, Van Buren Elementary School in the south, and Sprunica and Helmsburg elementary schools in the north. Those farther out, Guffey will meet at the edge of his delivery territory. So far, he has delivered small and large grocery orders, pizzas and, on one occasion, enough Mexican food to feed a small army. He has an extensive background in moving things from one place to another. He delivered pizzas for 20

In the same time, he also ran the wrecker for his father, Ray Guffey, owner of Brown County Tire. Currently, he delivers for NAPA Auto Parts during the day. But if his delivery business takes off, he would like to make it full time. He is looking into acquiring a cab driver’s license, allowing him to deliver people as well, he said. Guffey said he thinks having a local cab service would discourage drunken driving in the county. In his first months in business, the response has been very positive, he said. He even has two other drivers working with him to help make deliveries. Guffey said is hoping to see more business in serving Brown County’s visitors as well. “Everybody thinks it’s a great idea, and when I take the stuff to ‘em, they’re really grateful,” he said.

Quirky

Brown County museums that are now history By Sara Clifford From the north end of Nashville’s Van Buren Street, Brown County’s newest museum rises tall from a hill on East Gould. It houses artifacts and exhibits about the local past, and re-enactors sometimes show and tell about those activities across the street at the Pioneer Village. One exhibit the Brown County History Center hasn’t had yet is about old museums. Looking through a 1977 Brown County Almanack shows Nashville had a few unusual attractions that are now history.

The Serpentarium The Indiana Reptile Institute/Reptile Kingdom Serpentarium featured Thomas R. Tilton’s large collection of more than 100 domestic and exotic reptiles, “the largest in the state on public display,” the story said. It included a 14-foot Burmese python, cobras, more than 30 rattlesnakes, unusual turtles and lizards, and tarantulas. “As an added attraction, Tilton milks the venom from rattlesnakes while you watch,” the story said. It also had a few other exotic animals, including monkeys that escaped at least once. The museum used to stand at Franklin Street and Old School Way, near where the Cornerstone Inn is now.

Miniature Circus For more than 40 years, Ed Hollis handcarved quarter-inch scale replica pieces of the 1934 Hagenbeck-Wallace railroad circus — thousands and thousands of people, clowns, animals and circus equipment, all based on actual photographs. “To attain accuracy and authenticity, Mr. Hollis has spent thousands of hours in research and in interviews with circus people to produce this lifelike reproduction,” the story said. The display was housed with his wife’s The Toy Chest toy store, on West Main Street across from the historic brick Village Green Building. In 1983, much of the display was consumed in a fire. The Toy Chest still operates, though under different owners and now in the Artist Colony Shops.

The Drug Store Back when the local pharmacy was Hook’s, and it was in Salt Creek Plaza where Family Dollar is now, a side room held a “living restoration” of John A. Hook’s first drugstore in Indianapolis, circa 1900. It included the drugstore founder’s personal pharmacy scales and his handwritten book of pet and people health remedies, along with an ornate marble fountain that dispensed old-time sodas. It closed in 1992, around the time the Hook’s corporate brand changed hands. Visitors to the Indiana State Fair can still see some of the same types of artifacts at the Hook’s museum at the fairgrounds. photo Courtesy of Kay Hedrick
