Connecting the dots needs

community

giving

To our Donors and Friends… Heritage Fund has continued its focus on collaboration as we’ve worked with others to connect the dots between community needs and resources. We’ve included highlights of 2008 in this mini-report. For more complete information, visit our website www.heritagefundbc.org. You’ll find stories of connecting the dots between … • resources and needs in response to the 2008 June flood • educational institutions, employers and community leaders in our ten-county region through our EcO15 efforts to improve lives in southeastern Indiana • the vision for a vibrant downtown with fund-raising efforts for The Commons • the generosity of countless donors with agency needs and scholarship assistance • and other examples of connecting needs with collaborative solutions We sincerely thank each of you for your part in connecting resources and needs to provide meaningful community impact in Bartholomew County and beyond.

Donor / Scholar Reception On a beautiful day in May over 80 donors, fund representatives, board members, school representatives and students gathered for our annual Donor / Scholar Reception. This was a wonderful opportunity for the donors who have made these scholarships possible to meet and get to know their recipients.

Below: Donors Earl & Mildred Hudson along with the recipient of their scholarship, Samantha Case. Above: Mary Ann Heise Memorial Scholarship recipient Jessica Trosper with donors Scott Heise and his wife Amoret

Donor Advisors Chap Blackwell, with support from his children, established a donor advised fund in memory of his wife. In 2008 the Nancy Blough Blackwell Memorial Fund awarded a grant to Turning Point to create Home Start-up Kits to give to domestic violence survivors when they leave the shelter and move into a home of their own. Knowing that someone cares about their success helps the recipients build a feeling of empowerment. RIGHT: Debbie Blackwell Smith and Darla McKeeman, Director of Client Services and Training

2008 Teaching Excellence Awards At the June BCSC board meeting, three exceptional elementary school teachers were honored by receiving the William and Sally Hanley Excellence in Teaching Award. From L to R: Sarah Dunlap – Clifty Creek Elementary; Angie Ginder – Rockcreek Elementary; and Rebecca Monroe – Lincoln Elementary each received cash awards of $1,000.

Three private school teachers were honored as recipients of the Reams Family Awards for Excellence in Teaching. The $4,000 awards went to Abby Perdok from Columbus Christian, Whitney Vandercar from White Creek Lutheran and Mary Arnholt from ABC-Stewart (pictured with school director Mike Gorday).

EcO15 EcO15 (Economic Opportunities through Education by 2015) was in full swing by year-end. This regional initiative, led by Heritage Fund and the Community Education Coalition, received $38 million in funding from Lilly Endowment. The effort engages community foundations, educational institutions, employers and civic leaders in developing educational pathways for all ages in southeastern Indiana. The focus is on advanced manufacturing, healthcare and tourism.

Literacy Festival Over 3,000 children and adults gathered on the Library Plaza on May 17th to celebrate the joy of reading. Many came dressed as a favorite story book character. Entertaining acts, more than 40 literacy game booths and door prizes provided an afternoon of exciting activities.

ABOVE: Literacy Game booths were hosted by area elementary schools and not-for-profit organizations. RIGHT: Children were excited to meet pirate Jack Sparrow. He recommended his favorite book – Treasure Island.

Grant Impact Advocates for Children (CASA) received funds for billboard advertising. The billboard made a profound impression. CASA received numerous calls from community members seeking information on how to make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children.
