A Gift from Our Community to the Children of Hancock County

GET ON BOARD THE IMAGINATION LIBRARY EXPRESS

The Imagination Library program will provide free age appropriate books to babies born on or after January 1, 2016 who are residents of Hancock County. Books are delivered monthly to the home, and in the name of the enrolled child... in other words, children will receive their very own books.

How to give:

Imagination Library is made possible through a partnership of the Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF) who is taking the lead role in securing funding for the program and the Hancock County Public Library (HCPL) who is responsible for enrolling children and placing book orders.

Imagination Library is a gift from the community to the children of a community. Although books are free to families, the community bears a financial responsibility. HCCF is working with the community to build a $2 million endowment to sustain the Imagination Library program. An endowment assures the program will be available to Hancock County children for generations to come.

Clogged drains can form ice dams, where water backs up, freezes and causes water to seep into the house, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Sexton said that it’s best to make sure the home’s heating system is working properly far ahead of the winter season. “It’s never too late to do that kind of maintenance,” Sexton said. It is a good idea to have furnaces and heaters cleaned annually. Throughout winter, homeowners should change furnace filters during a monthly check. A dirty filter impedes airflow, reduces efficiency and could even cause a fire in extreme cases.

Lights should never be on when no one is home. This poses a significant safety risk, and no homeowner wants to arrive home to see their house has burned down or suffered damage from a fire. PREPARE A WINTER EMERGENCY KIT Buy candles and matches / lighter for use during a power outage. Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. Buy battery back-ups to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. Store bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

Homes with working fireplaces face a different kind of problem. Experts suggest getting the chimney cleaned if homeowners will be burning wood or pellets and having an HVAC contractor clean and check over the furnace, boiler or heat pump. Capping or screening the top of the chimney will keep out rodents and birds. One of the easiest ways to save some money is to ensure that homeowners have at least 12 inches of insulation in their attic. Hot air rises, and through the attic is where it will go unless sufficiently insulated. The rule of thumb is that if the attic’s wooden beams are visible, the home doesn’t have enough, because those often are shorter than 12 inches. Pipes that carry water around the house are especially susceptible to a cold

snap. A burst pipe caused by a winter freeze can be a serious problem, so before freezing nights hit, experts encourage homeowners to make certain that the water to the hose bibs (or threaded faucet) is shut off inside the house. The Department of Energy suggest looking for other pipes that are not insulated, or that pass through unheated spaces such as pipes that run through crawlspaces, basements or garages. They can be wrapped with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation. Those who are really worried about a pipe freezing can first wrap it with heating tape. Winter might not be the ideal time to trim trees,

but streaming lights on overgrown trees could pose a significant safety risk. A tree that hasn’t been trimmed might have grown close to power lines. When that tree is covered in holiday lights, contact with the power line could electrify the tree, potentially causing property damage or personal injury to anyone within close proximity to the affected tree. Strategically place lights. Lights should never conceal a window, and the cords should never be run across walkways or steps. Lights that are strewn across a window pose a safety hazard should a fire occur at the home and window escape is needed.

hen it comes time to finance a remodel or renovation, you may not know where to start. Credit restrictions on home mortgages that have troubled many would-be buyers have also plagued individuals looking to finance home improvements. However, homeowners hoping to finance a project do have options, and not all of them require stellar credit ratings.

Borrow against a retirement plan. Many retirement plans, such as a 401(k), allow plan members to take out a portion of the savings to put toward a home loan. This does not mean you are taking money out of the account permanently. Rather, you are borrowing against yourself, with repayment necessary in a certain time-

frame. Because these loans often offer very low interest rates, and essentially the interest is being paid back to you, they might be a good option for men and women who cannot secure a traditional loan. However, if you have been laid off, there may be a shorter repayment period. Also, the interest on these loans is not tax-deductible.

Apply for a home equity loan. Many people have heard of a home equity loan, and it is usually the first choice when borrowing funds for renovations. Essentially, a home equity loan is taking out a second mortgage on your home to pay for the work you want to have done, which is based on the equity, or the difference between the home’s fair market value and the outstanding balance of all liens on the property. Secure a home equity line of credit. A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is another type of home equity loan. Instead of receiving a lump sum to use toward renovations like you would with a traditional home equity loan, a HELOC is sort of a credit card type scenario based on the equity in your home. Consider refinancing. You may qualify to do a cash-out refinance, where you borrow against the value of your home and create an entirely new mortgage at the lower rate. Apply for a governmentsponsored loan. The government may offer programs aimed at helping individuals who are underwater on their home loans borrow money to make necessary improvements. While the funding cannot be used to purchase luxury items, such as a swimming pool, it can be used for necessities. Discuss financing with your contractor. Some contractors may offer financing. Keep in mind that the interest rates may be high, and it may be difficult to investigate the security of these types of loans. Many homeowners also look to credit cards to help finance some home renovation projects, but they should be used as a last resort. Credit cards typically come with high interest rates, and while they are good for some small projects, financing larger projects on a card may land you very deep in debt.

This starts with air leakage and it is preventable. Experts tell us that as your heating system produces warm air, it spreads throughout the levels of your house and some of it can escape through the ceiling of the top floor. This air then comes into contact with the inside edge of the roof and, when melting snow falls onto that portion, it can slowly trickle down and freeze. As more ice builds, a dam is created on the edge, and this can cause water to leak into your house. If any portion of the home is made of wood, water is especially harmful to it. This can cause mold and unwelcome, costly repair bills. If ice damming sounds familiar, it is wise to fix the problem at once. Specialized insulation will do it, experts say. At the same time, high quality spray insulation increases your home’s energy efficiency, reduces your heating bills and provides a more comfortable indoor environment.
