ALL DRESSED

Up

For my first formal dance ever, which also happened to be my junior prom, I did something quite uncharacteristic: I copied a girl’s look. The girl I copied was a buxom, sunny extrovert who worked with me at the Factory Card Outlet in Rookwood Pavilion in Norwood, Ohio. Her name has long since slipped my memory, but I remember the Sunday afternoon as I heard her describe the dress she would wear to her prom at Norwood High School. We were sitting on the floor in the stockroom, surrounded by boxes filled with resin rabbits that we were supposed to be pricing. I leaned in as this fantastic (and possibly still hungover) creature described the dress she would wear to prom. “It’s a nightgown. It’s made out of, like, chiffon,” she giggled. “It is cream colored, with flowers all over and the top has spaghetti straps. The bottom is, like, all raggedy. I mean, not torn up raggedy. It has all of these different pieces for the skirt.” This was 1995, a time when I was still figuring out the human I was going to become; to say that this girl was everything I wanted to be would be overstating it quite a bit, but I wanted to be lighter, happier, with less teenage angst and cynicism bubbling below my snarky surface. I wanted her confidence, her happiness and her shininess. I wanted to be pretty, like her. How I managed to steer my mom and her friend to a

lingerie store on a prom dress search, I cannot remember, but I found the dress at Victoria’s Secret, just where my co-worker said it would be. The top offered meager coverage and no support. The dress featured an empire waist (never a good look on me); the bottom had a handkerchief hem not unlike Tinker Bell’s skirt. Did it feel comfortable on? Not really, but my mom was delighted by the delicate, feminine dress and more than happy to shell out the money for the pink-accented dress, pink high-heeled sandals, seashell pink nail polish and the sticky tape that would serve in lieu of a bra under this skimpy dress. She probably wanted to get that dress on me before I changed my mind and opted for, I don’t know, a turtleneck prom dress. I was dour and sour, favoring the sludgy natural palette of the ’90s and modest cuts of which Emily Dickinson would surely approve. Remember, this was the ’90s, and most moms were really happy to see their daughters change out of these dull grunge looks, even if only for one night. Morph I did … into a busty little fairy, and boy, it was uncomfortable. Never had I shown so much cleavage in public (and, note well, never will I do so again). I spent the evening with my auxiliary shawl firmly over my shoulders, in an attempt to conceal everything I mistakenly thought I’d be OK to show off. I learned my lesson: That dress was for the tanned, shining, giggling girl. The dress I wore was the dress of a pixie or a sprite. It was pretty, but it was not my dress. If one could transcend time and space and go back to redo things, I would like to have Columbus East senior Allison Roberts along for my prom dress selection. Roberts, who organized a prom dress closet, understands just how important a dress can be. A veteran of pageants and a junior prom, she knows what a dress is supposed to be and how it’s supposed to feel. “When you put a dress on, you should be able to feel confident and sophisticated,” she says. “It makes you feel beautiful.” Roberts doesn’t want any of her fellow students to be held back from attending prom for want of a dress. So for her senior project she pulled together some 65 new and gently used dresses, then set up two dress closet events. She invited promgoers to browse through the dresses. For $25 and a Jane Hancock on a contract, a student could rent the dress of her choice, to be returned the Monday following prom. The $25 goes to post-prom dry cleaning and storage. “I just feel like everyone should have the opportunity to do everything,” Roberts says. She’s looking for someone to take ownership of the project for 2017 or, barring that, would love more dress donations for 2017. You can reach Roberts at goatchick27@gmail.com.

Cheap Trick We’re this close to summer, and that means it’s time to tan. Now, we hope all of you have adopted a sunless tanning approach. Before you apply a sunless tanner, whether it’s DIY at home or at a salon by a pro, you should plan to exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation, or the gentle abrasion of skin to remove dead skin cells and other yuckiness, will help you get an even tan. If you’re seeing a pro for your sunless tanning, they’ll likely have their own recommendations for exfoliation, but we have a good, natural recommendation: oats. To make your own exfoliating paste at home, grind whole oats in a food processor. Add water to form a paste. Massage onto your skin, then rinse off. Don’t want to mess with oats? Save your coffee grounds and massage them into skin when you’re in the shower.

Recommended Reading “Maggie Smith: A Biography” By Michael Coveney

The film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” served as this writer’s introduction to Maggie Smith. My all-girls high school featured a film discussion class my senior year, and we were encouraged to see the movie. It was a coming-of-age drama that might have been a questionable choice for a gaggle of teenage girls, and Dame Maggie Smith won her first Academy Award for the role. At the time, her acting ability impressed me. She still impresses me. Smith’s career has spanned six decades; she has performed with an impressive cast of actors, including Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier, Emma Thompson, Sandra Bullock and her lifelong friend, Dame Judi Dench. For those who know Smith only as the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, it’s time to get a closer look; if you’re bummed because your visits to “Downton Abbey” have ceased, well, maybe this book will help you recapture some of the magic. The same goes for “Harry Potter” fans; those who know of Smith through the popular film series will be entertained by her antics and her life in the theater. Coveney’s biography was written with Smith’s permission, and his interviews with family and friends of Smith provide a balanced view of this fascinating woman. “Downton Abbey” peeps and others will enjoy the book’s photographs that capture Smith on and off the camera/stage.

“The Lost Art of Dress: The Women Who Once Made America Stylish” By Linda Przybyszewski

As a dedicated follower of fashion, this reviewer was fascinated by “The Lost Art of Dress.” In it, the author, an associate professor of history at Notre Dame and a dressmaker, has combined her love of history and style. In doing so, she’s produced a tome that takes us back in time to the first half of the 20th century, focusing on a group of women known as the Dress Doctors. They worked in retailing, home economics departments, sewing schools and other institutions, writing booklets, giving talks, and chatting on radio shows about how to dress, all the while insisting that knowledge, not money, is the key to timeless fashion. The Dress Doctors had quite a bit of knowledge to impart, and often the group offered not just simple tips to their listeners, but rather a fashion philosophy that their followers could embrace. For example, Przybyszewski quotes a line from the Dress Doctors’ literature: “It is just as stupid to dress your body in ugly clothes as it is to fill your mind with cheap and ugly literature.” Interspersed throughout “The Lost Art of Dress” are pictures from vintage pattern books and quotes from various sources; the book is lovingly illustrated with blasts from the past. The Dress Doctors preached that beauty is good for our souls and that clothing can be an easy way to bring that beauty into our lives.

What did your prom dress look like?

14 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

Each issue, we ask women a different question.

“The year was 1997. My dress was a reflective, ice blue, very thin, slip/sheath dress. I paid $40 for it from Pitaya. I paired it with clear plastic platforms, butterfly hair clips, blue makeup and a sassy date.” — Brooke Merry

“Black taffeta, knee-length, off shoulder, sweetheart neckline, bows on sleeves and a big 1980s bow on the butt, with punky touches.” — Vicki King

“Junior year: long black velvet with a dark purple rose on front. My friend was training to be a tattoo artist, so I had him stencil a giant rose with a black Sharpie on my back. Everyone thought I had a huge back tattoo!” — Laine Charles

“I actually borrowed mine and bought a vintage bed jacket to go over it because I wanted my fat arms to be covered. I was 16 and did not have fat arms, but at the time I thought I did.” — Kelly Oswalt

“Junior year: a wedding dress from circa 1974 that we cut the train off of and altered to be floor length. White, empire waist, lots of little lace detailing and sheer layers. I still have it.” — Sarah Moeding

“It was 1994. I designed my dress, then had it made: pale pink with polka dot crinoline over skirt and little white daisies on bodice; same daisies in a chain for choker and earrings, and more on my white sling-back cork wedges. I think I was going for a ’60s girl group look.” —Erin Elaine Edds

April Williams shares her love of bikes with the whole city

A

pril Williams first hopped on a bike as a young girl. Her exact age at the time eludes her, but she remembers her father taking her to a large parking lot, where the United Way building now stands. Even without knowing all of the players, one can picture it: a small girl with large brown eyes balanced on a bike; strong hands holding onto her back, then a gentle push and the girl and bike move gracefully forward. “From then on, I’ve always had a bike,” Williams says. “Riding a bike is just something I love to do. It’s part of who I am, and I love to be outside.” It’s fitting, then, that Williams’ career path would lead to her role as the project and resource development director for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department and Columbus Park Foundation. In this role, she identifies program needs and works to fill in the gaps between what’s provided in public funding and what’s needed in private funding.

16 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

“I like to say I build relationships,” she says. “My goal is to guide the Park Foundation. I always like to make this clear: We are a truly separate entity from the parks department.” The Park Foundation is governed by a separate, apolitical, non-appointed volunteer board. In the big picture, she looks at Columbus’ 23 parks (yes, we have 23 parks; the parks department manages more than 1,000 acres of land) and sees how the department could better serve the people of Columbus, and she raises money, a lot of money. “She gets the right people in the room, and she comes up with quite a bit of money,” says Laura Garrett, Columbus Regional Health’s Healthy Communities Initiative leader. Garrett, who previously was employed by the parks department, worked with Williams during the People Trail campaign of 2011. “(Williams) seems not scared by how much some things cost and raising the money.” Now in the middle of 2016, Williams is seeing a dream project that she spearheaded come to Columbus. ColumBike is a bike-sharing program that launches May 21 during the Tour de Trails Bicycle Challenge. “She’s one of those people who continually brings you to the goal of having a more livable, bike-able community,” Garrett says. “She pushes the boundaries a little bit.”

Wheels keep on turning Williams grew up in Columbus and attended Columbus North High School, where she played softball and ran. “Believe it or not, I was shy in high school,” she says. “People wouldn’t believe that I’m the same person that I was in high school.” After she graduated, her parents moved the family to Florida’s Clearwater area. She earned a degree in marketing from Orlando College. She would spend the next 10 years of her life, including the early years of her marriage to Troy Williams, in Florida. “We were very active in Florida,” she says. “In fact, that’s when we Rollerbladed a lot. We spent a lot of time on the Pinellas trail. I think that’s where a lot of my interest in trail development came from.” Williams and family, which grew to include son Christian (born in Florida) and daughter Elle, stayed active after their move back to the Midwest. “We came back to Indiana really for no reason other than that I just missed it,” Williams says. “I like the seasons.” In Florida, she had worked as a field representative/office manager, selling copier service agreement contracts; upon her return to Indiana, she applied her salesmanship to the nonprofit field, working for the Indiana Blood Center from 1996 to 2002 and later doing similar work for a startup private Lutheran school in Seymour. She also worked at an investment service company. It was in 2011 that Williams found her current position with the Park Foundation and Parks and Recreation Department. Hired by former department head Ben Wagner, Williams dived into her first project, the People Trail expansion. Of course, life isn’t all work. In her role as a mother, Williams

raised two children with notable athletic prowess: Christian now plays football at Marion University. In the fall, Elle will head to San Francisco to play basketball at an art and design school that happens to have a Division II team. Williams herself has stayed fit. She bikes, on-road and offroad, during the day and at night. She runs both full and half marathons. In 2014, after a phone call from choreographer Charlotte Battin, she took on the Dancing with the Stars Columbus Style competition of 2015. “It was so fun,” she says. “I had no anxiety. I’m not really a ‘look at me’ kind of person; I don’t have to be or want to be the center of attention.” She turned her laser focus on the competition, learning her dance moves in record time and blocking the large audience out as she danced in front of them. She won.

>> Feature A history of recreation The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department is due, in 2016, for a big birthday party: This year will be its 100th anniversary. In 1917, William H. Donner donated a parcel of land to the city. He wanted the city to have a pool. He wanted the community to stay active. It was a goal the city continues to support, Williams said, with major pushes forward under the leadership of former Mayor Robert Stewart in the 1980s with the development of the People Trail. The first segment of the trail was constructed in 1986 with $50,000 from the city and spanned eight miles throughout Columbus. “If you make that kind of infrastructure important and you invest in it for your community, that creates a certain atmosphere of health,” Williams says. “You’ve got to give people the amenities to encourage people to make healthy choices. I think we do that very well here in Columbus.” In 2011, when Williams started at the Park Foundation, she got to be part of bolstering those health-driven infrastructures. As her first project she, along with her steering committee, raised more than $1 million in private funds to bankroll the People Trail expansion. Goals included providing a trail, bicycle lane or other facility type within three blocks of 90 percent of city residents; creating environmentally friendly, sustainable

18 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

transportation options; and expanding the network of safe facilities to efficiently connect bicyclists and pedestrians to key destinations, such as schools, shopping centers, employment centers, parks, downtown and more. “(April) finishes what she starts,” said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works and city engineer. He served as Park Foundation board president during the expansion. “I’ve always been able to trust her to get the job done and do it in the right way.” Since that initial project, Williams has spearheaded Race2play, a program that raised some $500,000 in private funds to improve four neighborhood parks. More recently, she’s worked to raise private funds for renovation at Hamilton

—April Williams

Community Center and Ice Arena. Under her guidance, the Park Foundation kicked off in 2012 the annual Sneakers at Starlight event, which has raised funds for Hamilton Center, the People Trail and the State Street Cultural Trail project. Acting as a mentor to a Columbus East High School senior, Williams helped launch the massively popular Ninja Warrior event in 2015; with a few tweaks, it returned early this month.

A bicycle built for you Then there’s the latest unveiling, a project Williams has finessed and fought for since 2014: a bike-share program, dubbed ColumBike, in which residents and visitors alike can rent, from kiosks around town, sturdy white cruiser bikes. “I heard a lot of chatter about bike-share from the time I started with parks and rec,” Williams says. After a feasibility study that included community leaders from various pockets of Columbus, the foundation determined that, yes, a bikeshare program would be a good match for Columbus. In 2015, Williams presented her ideas at Ignite Columbus, an ideasharing competition. Though she did not win the competition, it served as an appropriate test ground for the idea. Working with staff of the Indianapolis bike-share program, she developed operational plans; she tapped the Columbus Area Visitors Center. Its staff came up with art, architectural and landmark bicycle tour packages that would include the bike-share cruisers. All of the planning and work culminated when, at the Park

Foundation annual meeting, Williams and company peeled the opaque cover off a shiny, white ColumBike bicycle. “I felt all of this excitement and a release of all of this momentum,” Williams says. “We can finally say that we are getting a bike-share program in Columbus.” She hopes programs such as ColumBike bolster residents in their quest to become and stay active. “(Physical activity) helps you mentally, it helps you physically. It even helps you spiritually,” she says. “I hope to be an example of not only fitness, but getting involved in the community and being a part of progress. If you want to see these kinds of amenities evolve, get involved. Be a part of progress.”

A few words about ColumBike ColumBike, Columbus’ bike-share program, is set to launch May 21 during the Columbus Park Foundation’s Tour de Trails Bicycle Challenge. The bike rental program, which is similar to a program in Indianapolis, will feature eight stations (with more added in a second phase) around the city. Watch for ColumBike’s launch announcement during the Party in the Plaza at 11:30 a.m. at the Bartholomew County Public Library. For more information, visit columbusparkfoundation.org.

The event funds and helps support the nonprofit’s early childhood services and focuses on child abuse prevention, says Julie Miller, Family Service executive director.

20 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

Whether you attended your prom or skipped out on this American rite of passage, CAP Adult Prom can be a bit of a do-over or a re-do of your high school experience, Miller says. The event was inspired by a Family Service staff member who hadn’t attended her prom. “I think (Adult Prom) is something new and refreshing, and a chance for people to relive their childhood, if you will,” Miller says. “It hits home with all age groups. We had a group of ladies last year, going to prom was on their bucket list.” If you’re headed to the prom, dress accordingly. This is your chance to go all out with the Cinderellastyle ball gown you couldn’t convince your mom to buy for you back in 1988. This year’s Adult Prom has a carnival theme, and when the doors open at The Commons, attendees will be greeted by the sights and sounds of a carnival, along with light hors d’oeuvres and dancing. Your high school prom probably had a court; so does the Adult Prom. The prom court is where Adult Prom really raises funds for Family Service; for this prom court you vote with your dollars. You can vote for your king and queen in advance online, or you can vote during the event. Can’t attend but still want to support your favorite prom court member? You can cast your vote at familyservicebc.org. Each vote will cost you a dollar. Unlike your high school prom, the CAP Adult Prom is a 21-and-older event, complete with a cash bar.

HappyFeet Podiatrists tell us how to get

T

ruth be told, a lot of us don’t think about our feet all that often. Oh sure, we think about them when we’re scoping out cute shoes or imagining the perfect hue for our toenails, but we really should pay them just a little more attention. “Our feet are our base,” said Dr. Scott Benjamin, a Columbus-based podiatrist. “If you have foot pain, or you’re in a shoe that’s throwing your posture off, that doesn’t just have effects on your feet. That’s something a lot of people don’t think about.” Though women are encouraged to develop relationships with other medical specialists regardless of any acute need, Dr. Brandon Gumbiner, another Columbus-based podiatrist, said that most people don’t come into his practice until they’re in pain. But, he says, though women are far more guilty of wearing shoes that cause foot problems (cough, high heels, cough), they are far better about seeking treatment. “Women are more likely to go to the doctor,” he says. “I get women who come in as patients and say, ‘Well, I’ve just started to notice something. I don’t want it to get

footloose

any worse.’ Very rarely would I see a man doing that. Men will say, ‘I’ve been dealing with this for six years, and my wife got tired of hearing me complain about it, so she made the appointment.’” We asked the good doctors what conditions they see come limping over their thresholds and how we can avoid those problems. We also asked just what we should be looking for when we’re shopping for shoes and just how bad high heels are for our overall foot health (short answer: they’re not great for us). Come, play footsie with us.

Tell me where it hurts

These are the most common problems our podiatrists see, as well as causes, prevention and treatments. Plantar Fasciitis

Symptoms: “By far, probably the number one thing is plantar fasciitis,” Gumbiner says. “That is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band that runs from the heel out to the toes.” The symptom that brings in patients is heel pain. Causes: Plantar fasciitis is considered an overuse injury. It often occurs in people who are standing for more than one hour at a time, such as factory workers.

Before you buy new shoes, read this: Women’s shoe sizes change during the course of their lives, Benjamin says. This is caused by lifestyle changes, pregnancy and weight gain. Before you go shoe shopping again, get your feet remeasured. Also, keep in mind that your shoe size will be consistent across shoe styles. “I have so many women tell me they wear a 10 in athletic shoes and a nine in dress shoes,” Benjamin says. “The truth is, their foot slides forward in a high-heel dress shoe. It’s a volume issue.” 22 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

Prevention: Stretching the foot and Achilles tendon by looping a towel around the foot, then pulling the towel toward you, can help prevent plantar fasciitis pain. Also, wearing shoes with decent arch support and nixing the flipflops will help keep your feet happy. “In some moderation, you can wear a flip-flop,” Gumbiner says. “But to go and walk Disney World in a flip-flop is going to cause a problem.” Treatment: Custom orthotics (rigid shoe inserts that are crafted according to the shape of your foot) will help treat the problem, as will anti-inflammatories, such as cortisone injections. Bunions

Symptoms: The word bunion, Gumbiner says, comes from the Latin for “turnip.” A big, angry bump on the side of your foot, a bunion could possibly be mistaken for a turnip glued to your tootsies; a bunion can come with or without pain. Causes: Most of us have been told that bunions are caused by wearing high heels, but the truth is, they are caused by genetics. That’s right. Call your mothers, grandmothers and anyone else who told you to wear sensible shoes. You are vindicated, high-heel wearers. “Bunions are 100 percent genetic,” Benjamin says. “You inherit a certain unstable foot type that can lead to the progression of bunions.” Prevention: Because a person is born with a predisposition for bunions, there is no prevention for the condition. Of course, predisposition for a bunion does not mean it is guaranteed to make an appearance. You can make a bunion worse by wearing high heels. “You can wear wider shoes and padding to help keep the pressure off (the bunion),” Gumbiner says. Custom orthotics can be used to prevent the condition from progressing. Treatment: Surgery is the only solution for straightening out a bunion. “The only thing to fix a bunion is to fix a bunion,” Gumbiner says. Hammertoes Symptoms: This tendon imbalance is caused by biomechanics, Gumbiner says. Older folks are more

Nightmare and dream shoes Both of the podiatrists we talked to are fairly calm guys, but both got a little worked up when discussing one shoe: the stiletto heel. “A six-inch stiletto is probably the worst thing you can wear,” Gumbiner says. “The higher the heel, the shorter it makes your Achilles tendon.” Benjamin offers a cautionary tale. “This patient has since passed. She was a sweet lady, in her 90s, and she had worn high heels for probably more than 50 years,” he says. “She’d worn them so much that her heels were probably two inches off the ground when she stood up without her shoes on. Her heels could not touch the floor. That’s an extreme example, but that’s what high heels do over time.” The moral of the story: Take turns. “Make sure you’re alternating in flat shoes,” Benjamin says. “Just so you’re not wearing high heels every day.”

susceptible to this condition in which the tendons of the toes contract and toes no longer extend. Causes: These bad boys can be caused by genetics and, much as we hate to admit it, wearing high heels, Benjamin says. Prevention: Stretching the foot can help out early on. Wear shoes that fit and rotate your heel height. Treatment: Hammertoes are fixed by surgery. Athletic Injuries

Symptoms: The symptoms will vary by injury, Gumbiner says. Causes: Athletic injuries are caused by a variety of incidents, from a fellow player accidentally/on-purpose stomping on your foot to a sprain from landing funny after your jump shot. Prevention: Short of not playing at all, your best bet is to exercise cautiously and practice good form. Treatment: If you have a sports injury, get yourself to a podiatrist’s office ASAP, Gumbiner says. A good portion of his patients come in with exercise-related injuries. A severe sprain requires immobilization, which can prevent further injury down the line. Morton’s Neuroma

Symptoms: If you’ve ever felt a Morton’s neuroma, you will never quite unfeel it. A neuroma is a pinched nerve in the ball of the foot. It starts as numbness, and it can progress to a shooting, stabbing pain, Benjamin says. Causes: A major culprit is shoes that are too narrow. APRIL 2016 // She Magazine 23

Prevention: For starters, wear shoes that fit. “Don’t try to squeeze your feet into shoes that don’t fit well,” he says. Treatment: Benjamin will often prescribe an insert with a metatarsal raise on it. “It’s a little support behind the ball of your foot to spread the metatarsals out.” If needed, a cortisone shot will reduce inflammation. Sometimes, the nerve has thickened to the point that the foot requires surgery. “But that’s a last resort,” he says. Ingrown toenails

Symptoms: Pain in the toe caused by the nail growing into your skin Causes: The best-known causes are wearing too-tight shoes and not cutting your toenails straight across. Prevention: Wear shoes that are wide enough for your foot and cut your toenails straight across. Treatment: A podiatrist can remove the corners of your big toenails, preventing future problems. It’s a simple procedure that is typically done in the office, during your appointment. Metatarsalgia

Symptoms: This is a big word for pain in the ball of the foot. Is it stabbing? Is it numbness? “It’s just pain,” Benjamin says. Causes: We say it with a sigh: Wearing high heels. Prevention: Wear a lower heel or a high heel with more cushioning at the ball of the foot. Treatment: “Sometimes I’ll do a cortisone shot for it,” Benjamin says. “Once you get rid of the inflammation, it creates a good environment for things to get better.”

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK Granny Connection fundraiser celebrates women in music By Jenny Elig

Celebrate womankind with the Granny Connection as the Columbus-based nonprofit presents Indiana University professor Glen Gass’ highly acclaimed, totally interactive “Women Who Rock” lecture and sing-along. When the doors open on the event at 5:30 p.m. May 12, attendees can grab dinner and drinks (from the cash bar) and scope out auction items before, during or after they nosh, then head into the movie theater for the live auction, which will feature getaway packages and themed gift baskets. The auction will be followed by Gass’ presentation, which will highlight the works of seminal women who truly changed the face of music. “He’s going to focus on women like Grace Slick, Diana Ross, Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin,” says Granny Connection facilitator Ann Jones. “He’s going to play their music and tell a little bit about their history. It’ll be informative.” The evening benefits the Granny Connection, an organization that sends money to grandmothers in Zambia, Africa. The Granny Connection funnels the money raised (almost $100,000 since the organization was formed in 2008) to an organization that provides education to children orphaned by AIDS. The group also funds microloans to these kids’ grandmothers; the grannies in Africa use these microloans to start businesses of their own, encouraging selfsufficiency in their communities. 30 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

Questions For …

Ginger Lirette

Resident fashion blogger hopes to elevate Columbus’ style Q: What led you back into writing?

Ginger Lirette grew up with the vaguest of dreams of becoming a model. “I was a really girly kind of girl,” Lirette says. “I liked to have all the different frills. My mom said I used to wear four or five different outfits through the course of the day.” Lirette’s height capped out at 5 feet, 2 inches—not model stature, anyway. Never short on dreams, she turned to another love: writing. “Next on the list of dreams was to be a journalist,” she says. “That would be really cool, I thought, traveling the world, reporting and writing about various happenings. I imagined that I could provoke thought, shift thinking, inspire, and have some type of profound impact on others.” Lirette considered going to college to major in English, but then, two weeks before she graduated, she received an Air Force scholarship in engineering. “I’m kind of a left brain/right brain person,” she says. “I like to create, mostly in writing, but I’ve also got the technical, process-oriented side.” Engineering was great, she said, but it meant mothballing her writing dreams. Now, Lirette serves as the general manager of Cummins Inc.’s OEM Business– PACCAR Account. With 18 years and counting at Cummins, she had packed away her passion for writing, placing the dream on mothballs until a family vacation with her husband, John Lirette, and son, Trevor, at the end of 2015 jostled loose some mind space for creativity. With a little help from her son, Lirette set up her fashion and lifestyle blog. Since late November, Serendipity Fashion Columbus (serendipityfashioncolumbusindiana.com) has highlighted fashionable folks in and around Bartholomew County.

32 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

A: I took a peek in the humidor staged in the far recesses of the attic, and I smiled as I tried to resurrect a dream deferred. So why not start a blog? Simple enough. I thought (I would) showcase a town, meet and showcase creative people, and be able to put some dusty old writing desires to work. And so was born Serendipity Columbus Fashion blog. It’s not so much a blog about fashion as it is about an infusion of creativity, beauty and philosophy. I refer to it as my blog of fashion and philosophy. While seemingly superficial on the surface, it is layered with motivation, sharing of events and new experiences, and even an attempt at embedding a profound thought here or there. Q: How did you come to appreciate fashion? A: Although I wasn’t very much of a fashionista through my high school years, through my family’s global travels I did build a huge appreciation for the variety of colors, textures, cuts and styles from around the world. My mother was also always a little edgy in terms of her personal style, and I used to get a kick out of some of the outfits she would sport. To me, style became more about how you define your personality and your branding. Fashion is beautiful when it fits who you are at that point in time.

Q: What are some recent developments for Serendipity? A: Most recently I’ve been asked when more men will be featured on the blog. I’m still seeking how I might incorporate men. Really, how would most men react if they were asked to be featured in a fashion blog?

I hope the blog helps elevate some local businesses and helps convey the idea that every person is of value and is in fashion if they are being their original selves. I want to keep being able to elevate women about town, to show how beautiful they are and to show how creative they are. Columbus really does have a lot of style.

Q: What is your wish for Serendipity Columbus?

Q: How can people participate?

A: Like anything we do in life, some people will love it, some people will like it, some people will be neutral, some people will think it is goofy, and some people will absolutely detest it. But the blog isn’t meant to please anyone but myself. Over the last few months, as I’ve been writing the blog I’ve met some wonderful people and struck up new friendships. The readership has slowly picked up steam, and some blogs are reaching nearly 400 hits, but most regularly over 100 hits per blog.

A: If you have any interesting ideas or thoughts, I’m constantly on the lookout for interesting pieces to feature. I’d like to help small businesses in town by featuring in fashion objects or things small businesses might do. I’d like to continue to highlight special events in town and the social trending aspects of this wonderful Midwestern town. “In fashion” can mean a lot of things and doesn’t have to always mean women’s clothing. I am constantly looking for what is trending and what can help improve the lives of members of our community. I’ll continue to grow and expand what the blog covers. I can take it in a hundred different directions, I think, maybe a thousand different ways. The world and the universe are infinite.

Feeling

34 She Magazine // APRIL 2016

by Heather Dunn

I love cooking. Plain and simple, that statement sums up my passion, but let me tell you why: Cooking is transformative. In my kitchen, I start with a range of ingredients, and through care and attention you transform them into an array of tastes that produce a host of happy emotions. What I love most about cooking is that I don’t feel like an impostor. Whatever I cook or create is genuine, whether I throw together a picnic plate, put a curry in the slow cooker or whip up a fanciful dessert. I’m the private chef in my own home, for my friends and family, trying to create a feeling or conjure an image or experience another culture. I’m transforming not only my ingredients but the moments themselves. Overall, my style is pretty simple. I’m not comfortable with much bling, ornate furniture or over-the-top clothes. I like my elegance to happen in the kitchen. I’ve found that some of the best ingredients for adding nuance and subtle elegance are rosewater, pomegranate molasses and homemade simple syrup. These are inexpensive additions, all of which will add that little extra oomph to relatively simple recipes, making you feel like a fivestar chef. I went searching for recipes that included my favorites; I hope they’ll become your favorites, too. Before you stress about sourcing, know that you can find a lot of these ingredients locally. For example, you’ll find rosewater at Columbus Oriental Market. I found it incorporated in the melon and mozzarella salad. Like rosewater, pomegranate molasses is commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine and can be found either online or at one of the international markets in Indiana, such as Saraga Oriental Market in Bloomington. You may have seen recipes floating around blogs pairing pomegranate molasses with a savory root vegetable or with Brussels sprouts, but I found it glazing a tri-tip

roast. The suddenly popular tri-tip roast has an iffy rep as a lesser quality cut simply because it’s called a roast, says Rovair Whitehead, Savory Swine meat manager. A roast by any other name would taste as sweet, Whitehead says, and you can rest assured that the tri-tip roast, which is cut from the sirloin, is a quality piece. “The fat cap is essential on this cut because it adds moisture, flavor and helps with obtaining a good sear,” he says. Between the Mediterranean steak and the melon and mozzarella salad you nearly have a full meal, but it’s not complete without a fantastic cocktail. During a recent nosh at Tre Bicchieri, I noticed a sparkler with housemade, vanilla-fig simple syrup. Tre Bicchieri co-owner Kelly Glick notes that simple syrup is easy to make; you just combine ingredients, boil and then strain. The addition of Prosecco and vodka will have you sipping sweetly with your pinky in the air.

Heather Dunn is a proud Oklahoma transplant; she has enjoyed calling Columbus home for the past five years. She works at Cummins in a supply chain role. Cooking lets her explore new cultures, feed her loved ones and be creative.

mediterranean tri-tip steak This recipe, found at thekitchn.com, is a great ice-breaker if you’ve never before cooked tri-tip. If you are feeling bold, throw your meat on the grill instead of using a cast iron skillet. Also pomegranate sauce and pomegranate molasses are interchangeable. INSTRUCTIONS:

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound California tri-tip roast, also known as a Santa Maria tri-tip 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses 1 fat garlic clove, minced 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint

Serves 2 to 4

Rinse the steak and pat it down with paper towels until no visible moisture remains; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Allow the steak to sit, at room temperature, uncovered for 1 to 2 hours. In a cast iron skillet heat oil, on high, for 3 to 4 minutes until hot and shimmery. Carefully, but decisively, place the steak on the skillet; do not move it for 5 minutes. Flip the steak over and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes, which will yield a medium-rare steak. While the steak cooks, stir together the molasses, garlic and mint. When the steak is done, remove it from the skillet and place on a cutting board. Brush both sides of the steak with the molasses glaze, continuing until all of the glaze is used. Cover the steak with aluminum foil for 10 minutes before slicing it against the grain. Serve immediately.

Tre Bicchieri Vanilla-Fig Sparkler >> This sumptuous cocktail is a great transition to summer drinks. It’s easy to create and even easier to enjoy.. INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1½ ounces vanilla-fig syrup Proseccor Vanilla- Fig Simple Syrup:

½ cup sugar 1/3 cup water ½ cup dried figs, chopped 1 cinnamon stick 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

melon & Mozzarella Salad

“St. Peter’s Lutheran… a nationally recognized exemplary school”

For Students Kindergarten-8 153 years of providing Christian education to our community

with Rosewater Vinaigrette This salad, a simple twist on a caprese salad, comes from seriouseats.com. You can sub in any mild vinegar for the champagne vinegar. INSTRUCTIONS:

(Pictured on page 36)

INGREDIENTS:

4 thin slices prosciutto 1/8 watermelon ½ cantaloupe 1¾ ounces bocconcini mozzarella 1/3 cup arugula, lightly chopped 2 tablespoons light olive oil 1 tablespoon champagne vinegar 1 tablespoon rosewater Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 F, lay whole slices of prosciutto on baking sheet and bake for 16 minutes until crisp. Crisping may take more or less time depending on your oven and thinness of the meat, so check regularly until done. While prosciutto bakes, use melon baller to carve out balls from watermelon and cantaloupe, the same size as the mozzarella. Toss melon balls along with mozzarella in a large bowl with arugula. Make the dressing by combining olive oil, vinegar, rosewater, salt and pepper in container and whisking or shaking together. Lightly dress the salad; you might not use all the dressing. Crumble crisped prosciutto on top and serve immediately.

When it comes to crafting, we’re petal pushers created by jenny elig Real flowers are like nature’s jewelry; I won’t go too in depth on plant reproduction here, mainly because I did terribly in high school botany, but flowers are kind of like plant lingerie. Flowers crown a plant’s less charismatic parts to attract birds, bees and people. And boy, are blossoms pretty. Of course, working in artificial flowers is more practical for your everyday projects (I leave wrangling the real flowers to the experts), especially when we introduce the hot glue gun (I shudder to think of what a hot glue gun would do to a real flower). Luckily for us, the fake florals are in full bloom regardless of the season, and they gave me enough inspiration to bust out the hot glue gun and tackle these two projects.

Power puff I don’t know about you, but any craft project that requires layering has something of a meditative effect on me, and the hot glue dries so quickly, you’ll be hanging this puff ball before you know it.

What you need:

Hot glue gun and glue sticks Small paper lantern (I used a 9-inch tall lantern) Seven bunches of fake tulips, six flowers each (I recommend using dollar store flowers. If you do not want to spend time cutting flowers apart, some crafting stores sell individual petals).

Blooming badge This craft requires little effort but produces a piece of spring you can wear year-round. The pop of color at your collar will make you happy every time you look in the mirror.

What you need:

Step 1:

Prep your petals. I did this by taking each bloom off its stem, pulling out any plastic structural elements, then cutting the flattened flower in half; do this until you have a pile of petal strips.

Step 2:

Assemble your paper lantern.

Step 3:

Heat your glue gun. Count up three ribs from the bottom of your paper lantern. Apply a strip of hot glue along the rib and begin laying petals; you want the petals to cup the lantern. Work up row by row, laying glue and layering petals as you go. As with most things I do in life, I laid my petals on thick; if you want a less poofy puffball, put more ribs in between your rows of petals. I applied darker pink as I got closer to the top, giving my puff ball a slightly ombre (dripcolor) look. I finished my puffball by layering some green leaves on the top rows.

Step 4:

Hang your puffball and enjoy.

Fake flowers, about an inch and a half wide Hot glue gun and glue sticks Chain (choose one that’s fairly thin and easy to cut)

Step 1:

Prepare your buds. Remove two flowers from their stems; cut off any additional stem pieces from the back so they will lie flat on your pin backs.

Step 2:

Open your pin backs. Apply a strip of glue to each. Stick a flower in the middle of each, making sure the flower conceals the pin back.

Step 3:

Using your chain, measure a section that goes from either side of your clavicle and drapes a bit, too. Cut two pieces of chain.

Step 4:

Glue both pieces of chain to both pins, connecting the separate flower pins. Place the chain pieces just below the blossoms, making sure the chains are not twisted or crossing each other.

Step 5:

Once hot glue is completely cool, pin your pins to either side of your collar, allowing the chain to drape in the middle.

Mirror, mirror Good or bad, our kids are watching us By kelsey declue

W

hen you start to notice aspects of yourself manifesting in your offspring, it’s a beautiful thing. Of course, it can also be terrifying. Let’s start with the positive example of this mirroring. The other day, my husband pointed out that our daughter was standing with her feet positioned exactly the same way her mother does from time to time. You see, I have a tendency to cross my feet in what has been deemed an “abnormal” configuration when I’m standing in a relaxed state. To see my daughter pulling off the same stance, with one foot inverted on top of the other, while putting together some Legos, brought me so much joy. “She is my daughter!” I beamed. (But the nine months of carrying her and then the subsequent birthing process didn’t provide enough proof?) Another example: One morning while I was trying to hurry the kids to the car, Nolan shot me an inquisitive, yet challenging “Are you kidding me?” look. I had to do a double take; it reminded me so much of an expression his father wears frequently. These little nuances are what make families great, especially because although they showcase the mindboggling power of genetics, they can happen just through long association. They highlight the concept of family. Children mimic their parents; they may even evolve to become just like them. Spouses pick up each other’s traits. When you’re lucky enough to spend most of your waking life with someone, you can’t help but adopt some of their qualities.

Of course, the bad comes with the good. When you watch your kids, you see them pick up your not-so-savory traits. You hear them use the annoying phrases or bad words you often use. You see your temper reflected. Our kids are always watching and absorbing like little sponges with a thirst never quenched. From the moment our son Nolan, now 4, began displaying concrete personality traits, everyone has known he is destined to become just like his father, my husband, Ike. Many people, either family or longtime friends, have repeatedly informed Ike that his, nay our, relationship with our son is a classic case of what goes around comes around. Let’s just say, Ike put a few gray hairs on his parents’ heads. Nolan will do the same for us, so I’m buying stock in Just for Men while I can. However, the same high-spirited traits that will keep me awake at night also stem from a general disposition that we wouldn’t trade for the world: a positive outlook and affable character that make our son uniquely, well, Nolan. I’m giving Evey another year to really start coming into some of the personality traits she’ll keep, but if she’s anything like her mother, which is the way she’s trending, it looks as if the strong-willed stubbornness isn’t dissipating anytime soon nor is her willingness to help and encourage others. We take what life deals us, and we celebrate the good and work on the bad, all the while keeping in mind that we’re human. Becoming a person is just as joyous as helping develop one, and the transition never ends. Here’s to discovering more about ourselves and our loved ones, every day.
