SPRING 2018 Message from the City Manager
San Clemente Celebrates its 90th Anniversary The City of San Clemente has officially kicked off its 90th anniversary celebration and will commemorate the occasion on February 24, 2018 at San Clemente Day! San Clemente Day celebrations begin at 9 a.m. and will include a line-up of activities that will offer revelers the opportunity to enjoy a fishing derby, trolley tours, recreation swim, fried chicken luncheon, appearance from Ole Hanson, a birthday cake, and more.
City Manager, James Makshanoff
"...Envision a place where people can live together more pleasantly than any other place in America." -Ole Hanson
Incorporated on February 28, 1928, San Clemente still embodies founder, Ole Hanson’s vision as a place where people can live together pleasantly on the ocean in the “Spanish Village by the Sea”. Maintaining its small-town village character, San Clemente is now home to more than 65,000 residents. Many of the public structures that still stand today were built by Ole Hanson through the 1920's, including the Ole Hanson Beach Club, Community Center, the iconic municipal pier, as well as Max Berg Plaza Park. Additional historical sites include Ole Hanson’s home, Casa Romantica, San Clemente’s first church, St. Clement’s by-the-Sea, the Historic City Hall Easley building, Hotel San Clemente, Casino San Clemente, and Ole Hanson’s former real estate office, upstairs from what is now Baskin Robbins. Las Palmas, San Clemente’s first school will share its history at an open house and exhibit during San Clemente Day. All of these locations will be highlighted along the guided historical trolley tour, with trolley stops, exhibits, and free open houses, 12-4 p.m. Begin your celebration at the San Clemente Municipal Pier with a free youth fishing derby, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., for children ages 6-15 years old. Registration is limited to 90 children, so families are encouraged to pre-register at www.san-clemente.org/recreation. In addition to the derby, the community is invited to an open house at Marine Safety Headquarters where participants can learn more about the rich history of San Clemente lifeguards. At 12 p.m. the historical trolley tours will begin, starting at the pier and Ole Hanson Beach Club. The trolley will ride a historical route stopping at five iconic sites featuring free open houses and historical exhibits, with a tour guide to narrate along the way. The Ole Hanson Beach Club will be hosting a San Clemente Day luncheon at 12 p.m. with a visit from Ole Hanson and his wife Nellie, presenting his historical real estate pitch along a fried chicken lunch. The community is also invited for free recreation swim, 12-6 p.m. and a birthday cake cutting and ice cream social from 3 p.m. until sunset. The day will hold multiple San Clemente Day contests to include a coloring and costume contest with winners announced at 4 p.m. at the ice cream social. For more information or registration for the Fishing Derby and Fried Chicken Luncheon, visit san-clemente.org/recreation or call (949) 429-8797. Finally, on February 28, 2018, the City will be encouraging residents to celebrate San Clemente's day of incorporation on the golf course where we are pleased to offer 90% off green fees! This exciting discount will be available to San Clemente residents only and does not apply to driving range fees. Golfers are encouraged to reserve their tee time in advance through www.san-clemente.org beginning on February 21, 2018. I look forward to celebrating San Clemente’s 90th birthday with you and your family. See you on San Clemente Day! Sincerely,
James Makshanoff

Instructor Spotlight
Eileen Span: Aqua Fitness & Water Safety Eileen Span has been teaching water fitness and water safety classes with the City of San Clemente since July 2013. The success of her programs, and the individual success of her participants is primarily due to the special gifts Eileen brings to her classes. Eileen began her professional experience over 18 years ago. Eileen is an accomplished swimmer who has competed in many pools throughout the Untied States and participated in Open Water Events ranging from the 7.5-mile Potomac swim to a record breaking night time relay from the mainland to Catalina. Eileen has always loved to swim. She met her husband through coaching and has three children who share her love of the water and are also certified coaches and
instructors. Eileen leads group water exercise programs, including Deep & Shallows Water Aerobics and the Twinges and Hinges. Eileen also teaches swimming lessons to at the R.E.C.E.S.S., and inspires future lifeguards through instructing at the Lifeguard Academy. When asked what her favorite part of being an instructor for the City she said, “You have to get to know your people, the participants have shared their stories and made me grow as a person. Job satisfaction comes when someone is smiling because they are in class and can walk better, and overall move better. They motivate me as much as I motivate them.” Eileen feels lucky to have access to training through the City of San Clemente and through coaching with the Mission Viejo Nadadores, USA Swimming, Red Cross, ASCA, The National Water Aerobics Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation. Learn more about Eileen's classes on page 11.

Welcome to the City of San Clemente Learn to Swim program! Please review the following swim level information carefully as our lesson structure has changed. Swim lessons fill up quickly. Sign-up early to secure your spot in the class. • All students will be tested on the first day of class to ensure correct level placement. • Aquatics staff reserve the right to move students to the most developmentally appropriate swim level. • The American Red Cross (ARC) swim lesson level requirements and exit skills have been updated, please read the level descriptions carefully. • Drop-in option is not available for these programs. PARENT & CHILD 6 months - 5 years (ARC: Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1-2) Introduces basic skills and water safety topics to parents and children. Parents learn how to work with their children in the water, including how to support their children in the water and encourage their child to participate and try new skills. Children receive an introduction to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim. Children under 3 must wear plastic pants with elastic around the legs at all times. (Ratio 10:1)
SEAL ARC: Learn to Swim Level 4 - Stroke Improvement Prerequisite: Push off in a streamlined position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards, then exit pool. Course: Increase endurance swimming the strokes learned in Otter. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissors kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall. (Ratio: 8:1) STINGRAY ARC: Learn to Swim Level 5 – Stroke Refinement Prerequisite: Swim front crawl for 25 yards, change directions and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change directions and positions as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Course: Participants refine their performance of all six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke) and increase the distances that they swim. Participants also learn to perform flip turns on the front and back. (Ratio: 8:1)
STARFISH 3-5 years (ARC: Preschool Aquatics Level 1-3) Introduces basic independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children improve their coordination and control of simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions. New water safety topics are introduced, and previously acquired skills are reinforced. Children who are not successfully potty trained must wear plastic pants with elastic around the legs at all times. (Ratio 6:1)
Are you uncertain about which swim level to enroll in? We offer FREE swim evaluations by a certified Water Safety Instructor! Visit the San Clemente Aquatics Center on Fridays between 4:00pm-5:00pm to have your child evaluated.
