We appreciate our Library volunteers, more than 40, who keep our Library running smoothly and provide a friendly and enjoyable service to our community.

The Library will be closed for the following holidays in January: Saturday, January 1; Monday, January 3 and Monday, January 17. There are never any overdue fines, so please plan to enjoy your books a little longer on those weekends, as the book drop will be closed.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073

New Year, New Exercise

It’s a new year, and maybe you’ve resolved to start an exercise program. If so, good for you. Getting regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do, and it’s one of the most common New Year’s resolutions of Americans each year. Just make sure you start off on the right foot with these helpful tips: Take it slow. Set small goals. After all, you’re in this for a lifetime. Talk to your doctor before getting started, especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exercised, you’ve had a large weight gain, or you’ve had a noticeable change in health. Evaluate your personality. Do you like to exercise alone, in a large group or with a partner? The answer to this question will help you decide what type of exercise will keep you motivated to stick with your new routine. Be safe. If you’re exercising outside, make safety a priority. Dress for the weather, wear reflectors and light colors if you’ll be out when it’s dark, and carry a cell phone with you.

Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)

Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2 and holiday hours are noted on page 5.

Tuesday, January 11, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Wednesday, January 12, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time. Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

In December, all SCOV trash and recycle pickups changed to Monday. Don’t forget: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on Mondays. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup.

SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing.

Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the Report Missed Pickup tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The Votes Are In

The Architectural Review Committee is evaluating an addition to the approved colors for front entry doors in SCOV. A palette of Southwest (Talavera) colors has been available for homeowners to view and comment on. The results of the online survey on the suggested colors showed 61.83% in favor, 33.2% not in favor and 4.98% indifferent. The voting at the Welcome Center where colors were on display was 43 yes and 12 no. Swatches of these colors are now available at the Ace Hardware store on 1st and Tangerine. They are located at the paint counter in a file of HOA colors.

The proposed new Talavera colors would be allowed only on the front entry door. They would not be allowed on the security/screen door, garage/golf cart door or side entry door into the garage. The Board will be voting on these optional colors at its January meeting along with proposed changes to the Development Standards.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The current ACRTF practice is for vaccinated members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom.

An updated version of “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is now available on the SCOV website.

The SCOV website (go to Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the ACRTF Charter and other information for the task force.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

I use the monthly SCOV Resale Report to remove those who have sold their homes. However, the new owners are not added. You must ask to be included. This includes those who move within SCOV.

In your listing, we allow one hometown and one occupation per person. These items are included just for affinity purposes, so use whatever suits you. Hometown can be where you were born, grew up, lived longest, lived last, where your other home is or where you were happiest. Occupation is similar: your main occupation, your last occupation, your favorite occupation. This category isn’t meant to track whether you’re currently working or retired.

To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List.

The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista during business hours (during Activity Center renovation). Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently.

Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Election Election 2022

The Election Committee is preparing for another election cycle. Ballots will be sent in mid-February. There are three Director positions to be filled. Also, expect at least two initiatives for your consideration. The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to Florida (the Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Administration office).

The “Meet the Candidate” video interview will provide the opportunity to view and listen to the candidate. There will be a web page listed under Member Services > Vote March 2022 with information.

February plans are to have at least two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates, so you can get a feel for their understanding of and passion for SCOV. These forums will also be available online. If you would like to submit candidate questions for consideration by the Election Committee, please bring them to the Welcome Center.

More details on the candidates and initiatives will be provided as we get closer to the election.

Joyce Simmons (left) and Pam Dage

A new year begins with wishes for good health and happy days. Your Gift Shop welcomes you to browse new products with the artists who provide a beautiful spot to visit with family and friends. Featured artists are Joyce Simmons and Pam Dage.

Joyce scours the world looking for special components: Tibetan turquoise discovered in Vienna, jasper, opals and raku from Mexico, observing the “soul color” of her treasures and creating a unique design that will call to the woman who wears it. Designed with love and attention, no two pieces are exactly the same.

While looking for a new hobby, Pam discovered pour acrylic painting. She says, “I made many paintings, but I was missing my jewelry making, since I could not get into the silver club, and decided to try combining jewelry making and painting. The jewelry reminds me of my painting, and the painting reminds me of the jewelry.”

Some of the many home owners and angels who volunteered their talents to make this year’s tour and future displays a resounding success

Our first year’s Holiday House Tour was a fantastic success. Seven homeowners displayed their artistic talents by opening their homes to SCOV residents in search of lifting their holiday spirits, getting new ideas for their own home decoration and helping with the fundraising for future holiday lights displays. Our talented volunteers helped hammer the flower lights into the grounds around the restaurant, near the front of the Artisan Center and around the Del Webb road sign. They placed some gorgeous lights in the clock tower for the delight of SCOV residents. If you haven’t yet ventured out between 6 and 10 PM, it is well worth the visit.

We are very grateful for everyone’s help to make this a success in 2021 and years to come. We hope your holidays were wonderful and that this coming year brings great health, happiness and generosity of spirit for family, friends and neighbors.
