Our club provides a twice-a-month opportunity for lively discussions of challenging ideas, using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. This year, we are reading selections from Her Own Accord: American Women on Identity, Culture and Community. January’s readings deal with issues in relationships, touching on trust, respect and other intangibles. For more information, contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 AM-Noon, WC1, Zoom meetings first Mon. of the month
Extracts from “Javelina Monologue” by Sharyn Rafieyan might be read as a resolution about how to get along:
“I admire your self-image and the confidence it breeds,… but a part of me is sorry this is all you’ll ever be—just a scrounger, snitching droppings from my tempting olive trees….
I can’t imagine combing out your salt and pepper coat, coarser than a doormat meant for scraping muddy shoes,… And the sounds I’ve heard you utter…just a mutter, snort and grunt. You are not a regal lion, just a lowly peccary…
Yet I can’t dismiss your right to have existence in this place that we humans have usurped for our own purpose. Go ahead and eat the grass seed on our golf course and the flowers in the pot by my front door. I’ll stop fussing when you bump and nudge my bench and kick my stones—let’s all be respectful since we’re neighbors!”
We welcome all SCOV poets.

SCOV is a fantastic place to walk your dog. Every day as I walk mine, I run into multiple other dog walkers. The sidewalks, benches, trash bins and layout of SCOV allow for multiple routes to explore. If you are more adventurous, there are nearby trails that you can access directly from SCOV or a very short drive away. The Views Golf Course is open to walk your dog during certain hours (check signs at each access point). To keep this privilege be sure to stay on the golf cart path, keep dogs leashed and clean up after your dog.
For the January and March meetings, we have reserved the Pusch Ridge Room at Catalina Vista that can accommodate 60 people. Our guest speaker this month is Joanne Mead who will present “First Aid for Dogs.”

This club provides an enjoyable social evening getting to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Our monthly (December - March) themed dinners in individual members’ homes provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., French) or get creative with more ambiguous themes (e.g., food in songs). Since everyone brings part of the meal, it’s not a huge effort for the hosts. We also have several catered/restaurant events each year. Our December dinner theme was “Soups and Homemade Breads.” Please visit our website to see photos and details. Contact a club officer for more information if you’d like to join the club. Note: Proof of Covid vaccination is required to attend club activities.
