Our club provides a twice-a-month opportunity for lively discussions of challenging ideas, using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. This year, we are reading selections from Her Own Accord: American Women on Identity, Culture and Community. January’s readings deal with issues in relationships, touching on trust, respect and other intangibles. For more information, contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

Extracts from “Javelina Monologue” by Sharyn Rafieyan might be read as a resolution about how to get along: “I admire your self-image and the confidence it breeds,… but a part of me is sorry this is all you’ll ever be—just a scrounger, snitching droppings from my tempting olive trees…. I can’t imagine combing out your salt and pepper coat, coarser than a doormat meant for scraping muddy shoes,… And the sounds I’ve heard you utter…just a mutter, snort and grunt. You are not a regal lion, just a lowly peccary… Yet I can’t dismiss your right to have existence in this place that we humans have usurped for our own purpose. Go ahead and eat the grass seed on our golf course and the

flowers in the pot by my front door. I’ll stop fussing when you bump and nudge my bench and kick my stones—let’s all be respectful since we’re neighbors!” We welcome all SCOV poets.

Democratic Club Richard Kopp 520-342-6633 richardkopp@mac.com Next meeting, Sat., Nov. 13, 1 PM, Zoom
Regrettably, due to concerns over Covid-19, we have canceled our in-person social gathering at Catalina Vista on January 9. But this month, on Saturday, January 15, 1 PM, we will have our monthly Zoom meeting open to all. We’ll hear about the good, bad and ugly issues we can expect to see in this session of the Arizona Legislature, which begins that week and we’ll consider how we might want to respond. Also at this meeting, we’ll have election of officers for 2022. And of course, we’re welcoming new members. Just give us a call.
