Forward Thinking
by Rocky Gedrose
I was recently looking through the archive of past Tipsters. I specifically looked at the April 2013 issue. I was curious what the issues were ten years ago in SCOV.
Cigarette butts on the golf course was a problem. I don’t believe it is a big problem today, but I see them occasionally. Dogs were not permitted on the course, ever. It seems that the weather in February of 2013 was not very good, so the amount of play on the golf course was down. Sound familiar? The specials in the café were endless soup and salad on Wednesday and meatloaf on Thursday. The Cure for Cancer Golf and Tennis event raised $3,824. This year more than $40,000 was raised. Some things change and some stay the same.
The other thing that grabbed my attention in the April 2013 issue was the “From the Board of Directors” submission. The Director’s submission had an interesting point, although I completely disagree. He wrote, “No amount of spending on restaurants, landscaping improvements, and other additional facilities will enhance our community enough to put us in a leadership position compared to nearby developments.” Where would SCOV be today if we all thought this way? We would have never purchased the current Welcome Center. The restaurant would still be a small café with limited hours, sharing space with the Pro Shop. The Aquatic Fitness Center would not be what it is today. The Activity Center would have received a fresh coat of paint, not the fantastic remodel. We might even still have shuffleboard where the pickleball courts are today.
If we all had that same attitude, we would not have purchased the Copper Building. What a mistake that would be. This Copper Building opens so many options that will save money in other areas. We need to carefully decide which options will provide the greatest benefit. I encourage everyone with an interest to get involved in the process.
I believe SCOV is in a leadership position compared to other nearby developments. We may not be as new as some others, but what we offer exceeds many of them. Our willing- ness to take advantage of opportunities and to think forward has made us one of the more desirable 55+ communities in the Tucson area.

Preparing for Summer
Can you believe another winter season is just about finished and we will be starting into our summer season? For those of you who will be heading to cooler climates, please remember to prepare your homes for your absence. If you have water features, remember to cover them, empty them or leave water running in order to prevent stagnation and mosquitoes. Also, please don’t forget to arrange for the landscape to be taken care of in your absence. If you are new to SCOV, it is always a good idea to talk with your neighbors and get a few tips for other things you might do to prepare your home for your absence.
Just an update on the Copper Building: The Lis Pendens has been dismissed, opening the way for the purchase. I hope that this will be accomplished quickly, and a corrected purchase agreement is already in the works.
As many of you know, I wrote this article about three weeks before it was published. I hope that much has happened during those three weeks. If all goes as scheduled, the Auditorium should be about complete with the audio, visual and lighting. We may even have the Copper Building purchased. The elections are now over, and we have two new Board members.
Many of you may not know how very much work has been done by our outgoing Board members, Ronna Heinig and Terry McFadden. I worked extremely closely with Ronna as she has served as the Board president, and I can attest to the full-time effort she has put in. I’ve worked with Terry in many ways, such as with the Properties Committee for which he is the liaison. We should all give them a BIG thank you.
I also want to welcome our new Board members and wish them well in their service. I’m sure the Board members who have a lot of experience will be a great asset to help them be successful.
For those of you who are staying for the summer, I look forward to seeing you around. I hope you all stay safe and keep protected from Covid.
