Many Ways to Serve

I want to congratulate Jane Fairchild and Eileen Buskirk on being the two newly elected Board members who take office on May 1. They will serve and support our community on the Board of Directors (BOD) for the next three years. I am also honored to serve as the BOD president for the next year.

With the never-ending winter weather gone, we welcome our Arizona summer. Seasonal residents are migrating to their summer homes to be near family and cooler weather. For the rest of us full-timers, the pace of SCOV slows down, and we can enjoy our amenities with some breathing room. Club meetings, artisan studios, and lap lanes are easier to reserve, and getting a table at The Views Restaurant is not an issue. I moved to SCOV during the month of May and found it satisfying to be able to go to club events without overcrowding while getting to meet and know more residents.

Memorial Day is a time to remember our fallen Veteran heroes. Their military sacrifices were borne to serve our country domestically and abroad. The first national celebration of the holiday, called Decoration Day, took place at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried. The name Memorial Day was officially adopted in 1968. Please don’t wish anyone a “Happy Memorial Day” as it was established to honor troops who gave their lives in service to America. If you are able, attend the Monday, May 29, Memorial Day ceremony at the Marana Veterans Cemetery, 8 AM, 15950 N. Luckett Rd., Marana, AZ.

SCOV is an amazing place to live and play. Consider donating your time to our community. Volunteers are needed in a myriad of capacities around SCOV. Look to volunteer at the Library, at your favorite club as an officer, by collating the Tipster or as a member of one of the many Association committees or the Board of Directors. Volunteers are the backbone of our community. Giving back to SCOV is a rewarding, immeasurable, way to meet new friends and socialize, which promotes good health.

Be Involved in Copper Center Decisions

May I take a minute to remind those of you owners who are leaving for the summer to update your summer address online: Members > Member Services > This & That or in the Administration office at the Welcome Center?

When I first came to Arizona about 14 years ago, I remember dreading the summer heat, and I’d walk around with a terry cloth hand towel draped around my neck to wipe the sweat from my brow. Now I welcome the hot days and am cold when I go back up north. I’ve become accustomed to working in the heat or staying inside in the air-conditioning when it becomes brutally hot. I can even golf at 105 degrees pretty comfortably as long as I have plenty of water to drink. It took a few years, but I became acclimated to the heat and now quite enjoy it.

When SCOV, then Vistoso, first purchased the Welcome Center building, there were some who did not like it and thought it was a waste of money. Now we praise the foresight of the Board who made that purchase and wonder what we would ever do without it. When the idea to renovate the Fitness Center first came up about a decade ago, I imagine there were some who thought it would not get that much use, and that spending that amount of money on the project was not wise. Now we can see what a great addition the Fitness Center facility has been for SCOV.

Once again, we have an opportunity to expand and create something in the Copper Center that future generations will be able to appreciate. As we move forward in determining what should be done with that building, I encourage you to share your opinion by attending meetings and expressing your thoughts. You may or may not see your thoughts match with most residents, but your voice will have been heard and your ideas considered. And who knows, once your thoughts are shared, others who may not have thought about your idea may embrace it and may change their minds. Your idea may be the one that future generations look at and say, “What would we ever do without that?” If on the other hand, you don’t like something that is put in the Copper Center, hang on a few years and maybe you too, will come to like it.

Please have a safe summer wherever you go and whatever you do.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!

Resident Ambassadors Share the SCOV Lifestyle with Prospective Residents

Sun City Oro Valley was built by developer Del Webb. He brought the concept of active adult living to the undeveloped northern portion of Oro Valley. Sun City Vistoso was the first residential development in Rancho Vistoso, and the adventure began. As the area was built out, Del Webb turned over the HOA to be self-managed, taking the sales team along with him. So the new Association began its own marketing program with resident Ambassadors providing tours to potential residents. The tour wasn’t to sell the homes, but to sell the lifestyle of active living.

The first Ambassador tours began as walking tours in the mid-2000s by resident Marge Roetzel. She would walk the main campus including the Artisan Center and gym. Nancy Sweeney enhanced the tours by taking prospective residents in her four-seat golf cart so they could go out on the golf course, to the Desert Oasis and to Catalina Vista. A six-seat cart was purchased around 2014 when Lou Gard took the helm of the program. Lou has served in this position for the past nine years and will pass the torch of leadership to Chris Ludwig this month. We are fortunate with the longevity of our leadership. It has provided stability and development opportunities for the program. There are more than 30 residents participating in the Ambassador program today.

The Ambassador cart now has fun branding; it’s a sleek e-cart, and the twice daily tours are scheduled online for showing prospective residents the SCOV lifestyle. A potential resident receives information about SCOV, a Tipster, and they walk through the Library, the genealogy lab, the technology lab, Fitness Center, pickleball courts, Artisan Center and Activity Center. The cart takes visitors outside to

see the AFC pool and the gorgeous views from that location, then drives down to tee #1 to see the vast mountain views from that spot. Next, they walk through the bustling restaurant and onto the terrace.

The driving tour continues to Sun City Blvd., with a walk through Desert Oasis and an explanation of the activities at that location. From there, the tour continues onto Lost Arrow Dr. and Del Webb Blvd. with a walk through Catalina Vista and an explanation of the various activities there.

The tour concludes at the Welcome Center. If a visitor requests information concerning a realtor, they are referred to the Tipster where many realtors advertise.

Quite often, residents

will stop the cart or comment during a walk to inform the visitors just how much they like living in SCOV and the friendliness of this community. Often residents who have purchased a home without having first taken a tour will request one after relocating.

The Ambassadors serve the community in other ways as well. During the Arts & Crafts Festival, they transport visitors from lower parking lots and act as greeters.

In 2022, the Ambassadors gave 305 tours and 26% of visitors who took tours purchased homes in SCOV. Ninety-eight visitors wrote reviews scoring 4.9 average out of 5.

The goal of the Ambassador program is to make visitors feel welcome, emphasize the abundance of amenities, point out activities and clubs that are available in SCOV and present as much information as possible. The next person you see on an Ambassador tour could be your new neighbor.

SCOV–An Age-Restricted Community

What does that really mean...an age-restricted community? For SCOV it means a few things. First, the Fair Housing Act and Housing for Older Persons Act 1995 (HOPA) must be adhered to. The Fair Housing Act specifically exempts three types of housing for older persons from liability for familial status discrimination. Such exempt housing communities can lawfully refuse to sell or rent dwellings to families with minor children only if they qualify for the exemption. In order to qualify for the HOPA exemption, a facility or community must comply with exemption requirements. There are three types of exemptions; ours is intended and operated for occupancy by persons 55 years of age or older, which is the most common use of the exemption.

A community must have at least 80% of the units with at least one occupant 55 years of age or older, and they must publish and adhere to policies and procedures that demonstrate the intent to operate as “55 or older” housing, and the community must comply with HUD’s regulatory requirement for age verification of residents. The HOPA exemption does not protect such housing communities from housing discrimination liability because of race, color, religion, sex, disability or national origin.

The SCOV governing documents further address age restrictions in the Master Declaration, Section 4.25 where the Association required at least one person who is 45 years of age and at least 85% of the Lots occupied by those 55 and older. In other words, 15% can be 45 years of age and older.

So, how are ages tracked? The law requires a census to be taken every two years. SCOV does this on odd years, so this is the year of the census. In June, an Age Verification Form will be in your annual mailing with your dues invoice. This is to be filled out and returned to SCOV in the envelope provided. By your completing this form, SCOV can demonstrate it meets the requirements for age-restricted communities. Also, after the forms are received and entered in a database, there will be a good demographic picture of our community. So, thank you in advance for filling out this form and watch “This Week in SCOV” for information on the results from the census.

Sheryl brings to life hits by Ray Charles, Petula Clark and Burt Bacharach and is backed up by five of Tucson’s most talented musicians. Members of the band have composed and played on major television shows and for orchestras around the country. Tickets, $15 pp, are available on the website under Member Services > Tickets.

The second event SCOV is hosting is a free car show for our community on Sunday, May 7, Noon-3 PM, in the parking lot between Rancho Vistoso Blvd. and the tennis courts. There will be music, and don’t forget to try your luck at the raffle table. Revised SCOV Development Standards

On March 28, 2023, the SCOV Board voted to approve the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) suggested changes to our Development Standards.

Please destroy any old copies of the Development Standards that you might have, and go to our website to read the revised Standards. After you sign into the website go to Members > Documents > Development Standards. You may also pick up a paper copy at our Welcome Center.

One of the changes is a new palette of 21 exterior paint schemes and the addition of several optional southwest front entry door and security door colors. Security doors adjacent to front entry doors may now be painted the same southwest color as the front entry door. Most of the body colors have been held over with new trim colors. Only one house trim color is now allowed in addition to an optional southwest front entry door color. Ornamental iron fencing Specifications are now included in Appendix B.

It is important for residents to be up-to-date regarding the governing documents, especially if they are contemplating making any changes or additions to the exterior of their property. A good rule-of-thumb is that anytime you want to change the exterior of the property, it usually takes some kind of HOA approval–even in the backyards. The Tom Zoellner author event was intriguing. Tom shared his extraordinary journey through our state exploring its history and amazing geographic features.

A huge thank you to the Friends of the Library and presenter Garry Buck for the Great Views event last month. The Library added the 21 new foreign films that Garry reviewed to our DVD collection. In April, we recognized our amazing volunteers who help keep our community library running. Not only are they the friendly, helpful people checking books in and out, but they go above and beyond in assisting in the Library. Volunteers help with collection development, preparing books for circulation, finding lost books, processing book donations, updating the puzzle wall, maintaining the magazine rack and helping patrons find those great books to read. A heartfelt thank you to our awesome team of Library volunteers.

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration is when our body loses more fluid than we take in. It can happen quickly and it can be fatal. Generally, the Institute of Medicine recommends a daily total water intake of 15 cups (or 3.5 liters) for men, and 11 cups (2.5 liters) for women. Other factors such as age, weight, lifestyle and physical condition also play a large part. Healthy hydration is drinking enough water for your personal health and lifestyle profiles. We live in a warm climate, so drink up. Water is portable. Carry small bottles with you wherever you go.

The Active Health Committee would like to spotlight the Diabetes Support Group.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is at epidemic levels. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death and an underlying cause in Alzheimer’s disease, blindness, heart and kidney disease. The latest NIH statistics show that 50% of adults 65+ are pre-diabetic and 30% are Type 2 diabetic. Numerous studies have shown that prediabetics and Type 2’s can control or reverse the effects of the disease with lifestyle choices. Some members of our group have done just that. They have shared their stories at the meetings.

The group discussions include all things diabetic: latest news, terminology, medications, individual successes and failures, and important lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, sleep and stress management). We provide a place to ask your questions about living with diabetes. See Community Support Groups on page 14 for meeting information.

The committee had a very busy and productive year with a successful open house, recommendation of additional heaters for the pool, updated pool decking, backstroke flags and additional improvements. We will meet in May for our last meeting until September. We have added two additional meetings for this year. As chair, I will follow-up on our recommendations and communicate to the committee through the summer as needed.

Next year we will address the asset reserve list and look at replacement needs in the Fitness Center. Continue to fill out comment cards, and please fill out the agenda form which is on our website for specific requests. Have a wonderful spring and summer.

Architectural Inspection Group

We sometimes get asked about removing epoxy driveway coatings that have become cracked, chipped, or beyond cleaning. Even the best coatings may not look good after 8-to-10 years. Removing that coating is labor intensive and requires professional equipment. One company here in Tucson recently quoted a SCOV resident a price of about $4 per square foot to diamond grind the old coating off. This cost will likely continue to increase, and it is important to remember that the concrete underneath may not look new once the coating is removed. If you are considering having your driveway coated, remember that ongoing maintenance and occasional recoating will be necessary. If, later, you decide to remove it, that will be a significant cost as well. Be sure to consider all the details before having any driveway work done.

The focus of recent changes made to the Development Standards involve adding clarity and adapting to a changing community. Key improvements include more clearly defining fence materials and how close one wall can be to another wall/fence. Window frame width requirements were tweaked to align with manufacturing advancements. A new set of house paint schemes are available. The southwest colors introduced last year for front entry doors are now extended to security doors. More basic updates such as pathway lighting, UV screens, and garage doors can now all be approved directly by the Architectural Coordinator. In addition, clarity was provided to define a courtyard, specify how many artifacts/pots can be in the front yard, and to establish that artificial grass must not be visible from the street. Before making changes to your property’s exterior, be sure to get the latest version by going to the SCOV website Members > Documents > Development Standards.

The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) defines civil behavior for residents and their guests. The COC shall be followed when using SCOV facilities, common areas, digital and written interactions. When buying a home in SCOV, every homeowner is presented with a copy of SCOV’s governing documents including the Owner & Resident Handbook in which you can find the COC on page 5: Members > Documents > Owner & Resident Handbook.

By adhering to the COC, we maintain mutual respect, honesty and courtesy with our fellow residents and others who enjoy SCOV public spaces. Let’s all do our best to make SCOV the best place to live.

Last month, community directory volunteer Blythe Campbell had “office hours” at the Activity Center to help residents with their directory listings. Several residents stopped by to make changes. One area of confusion, particularly for new residents, is the website/online directory.

The online directory is updated monthly. You can access the directory on your computer, tablet or smartphone.

When residents fill out a directory change form online or on paper, there’s a box to check to have name, address, phone number(s) and/or email address(es) “unlisted on the website.” People often check that box thinking, “Of course I don’t want my information on a website.” However, the SCOV directory is in the nonpublic area of our website, so residents need to log in to access it. Having an online listing helps your friends and neighbors

get in touch–not a bad thing in a community full of friendly people and fun activities. Email addresses are not included in the paper directory, but you can choose to list your email address in the online directory.

Vote results for the Board of Directors: The results of the vote were published Tuesday, March 28, for the Board of Directors. The top two vote getters are elected to serve a three-year term beginning May 1, 2023. There were 2,476 eligible voters with a quorum requirement of 10% of the Lots in the Association (249). There were 1,247 votes cast, meeting the quorum requirement. The count of votes cast was Jane Fairchild (974), Eileen Buskirk (973), John McConnaughey (451). The top two vote getters, Jane Fairchild and Eileen Buskirk, were elected to serve from May 2023 through April 2026.

Volunteers put down their books briefly at the appreciation party

It doesn’t take a village to run our Library, just 50 wonderful volunteers, one wonderful librarian and 11 Friends of the Library (FOL) board members. FOL showed their appreciation to the Library volunteers in March with a well-attended wine and pizza shindig. Not only is the SCOV Library one of the best assets in our community, but it’s also one of the most fun places to volunteer.

SCOV Library does not get funds from your HOA dues to purchase all the items that fill the Library shelves. Your membership and kind donations go towards those purchases. Recommendations on those purchases come from scouring best seller lists and suggestions from you. We try to have the hottest titles in our collection, and often you can have one in

Linda Wilkes was encouraged into jewelry making by her mother-in-law.

In 2017, Linda purchased jewelry at an estate sale, including a beautiful necklace that was handmade. That particular necklace led her to retrieve her jewelry tools and revisit a joy of creating. “I like to create with different themes in mind and have created a design I call Dimensionz which appears to be dimensional.”

Alice Shabel grew up in Queens, NY, attending the School of Art and Design and Fine Arts at Queens College. After attending a cat show and seeing costume jewelry caricatures of cats, she started making more realistic cat jewelry. She took classes learning how to carve wax, cast and work with silver. After moving to Arizona, she started using glass and crystal beads for herself and for gifts. “My favorite designs are peyote slide necklaces and earrings, interchangeable, so you can make several different color-coordinated looks.”

On Tuesday, April 4, the Government Affairs Committee hosted Oro Valley Police Chief Kara Riley and Lt. Zachary Young in the Auditorium. Chief Riley shared crime statistics, explained department training, staffing and certification processes. Lt. Young addressed the traffic situation and plans for improving the focus on traffic on Ranch Vistoso Blvd. Chief Riley and Lt. Young also answered questions from the community.

Our next community forum will be with the Golder Ranch Fire Department on Thursday, May 4, 1-3 PM, Catalina Vista. Do you know how the Fire Department reacts to an emergency at your home, or what services and training they provide? They will address all of this, plus take questions from the community.

Due to capacity limits at Catalina Vista, there will be free tickets for this event available at the Welcome Center.

Thanks to a grant from the Vistoso Community Foundation, the Holiday Lights Committee has been able to purchase 139 strings of lights with an additional 12 lighted spheres to add to the display for this year. We hope to make up to 70 more flowers from this donation which will be added to the Kiva patio. All the Sun City signs that have electric (versus solar) power were lit last year and will be again.

Just what is an artifact? Our Development Standards define an artifact to be “such as statues, depictions, artificial flowers, decorative yard ornaments or other manufactured artificial decorations, whether lighted or unlighted, shall not be placed in front yards or street-facing side yards.” Artifacts maybe placed on top of front or street-facing courtyard walls and window sills. But there is a limit as to the number of artifacts on these two locations. The length of the courtyard wall or window sill limits the “number of artifacts” to one per four linear feet. Placement is at homeowners’ discretion. Artifacts can be placed on the ground only under covered porches.

The Properties Committee conducts a number of facility inspections throughout the year. During the inspections, participants make notes and take photos of their observations relating to safety, function and appearance issues. Those notes and photos are assimilated into a draft report which is reviewed and edited by all committee members. The final report is then forwarded to Association management for resolution by staff. The committee is pleased to report that most recent observations have been appearance issues. The number of safety and functional issues have decreased during the past several years. Thank you for another busy and successful season this year. However, let’s hope next year we have a little better weather. Our new rates and membership information for the 2023-2024 season are now available on the website.

Please be aware of some important dates regarding golf course maintenance. The driving range will be closed from the end of April through the first few days of May for our pump station replacement project. We will also be aerating tee boxes throughout the summer, as needed.

During the first week of May, we will aerate the roughs. On May 11, the practice green will be aerated starting at 9 AM and will be closed until the project is complete.

The greens aeration begins May 15, with the back nine closed for the day but play allowed on the front nine. The following day, we will aerate the front nine and open the back nine. Please indicate when booking starting times whether you will play nine holes only or play the same nine twice.

Starting on May 30, the fairways will be top-dressed, and solid-tine aeration begins on the back nine, which will be closed through June 1. The following week, June 5-7, the front nine will be closed for aeration.

One of the toughest challenges on maintaining a golf course is accomplishing many tasks with only a small number of employees. The maintenance crew is not only responsible for maintaining the grass, but also traps, sprinkler systems, pump station, ponds, desert and numerous other items. Most golfers are unaware of the amount of work that goes into golf course maintenance, but volunteers from all the clubs have been donating their services to help the maintenance department for many years.

Originally, the Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club wanted to help on the golf course, so they organized volunteers to fill divots on the tees and fairways during the time the course was closed for maintenance. Eventually, they created a system where volunteers from all the clubs adopted their own hole to maintain. These people not only repair the divots, but also fix the ball marks on the greens. The work that these volunteers accomplish throughout the week has freed up at least two maintenance employees to concentrate on other aspects of the golf course. This directly leads to even better maintained golf course without added expense.

The golf course maintenance department also gets volunteers who help with painting the yardages on cart paths at overseed and help with the weeds around the desert edges. The maintenance department would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all who donated their time and energy to help make this one of the best courses in Tucson.

In April, the 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club held The Views Invitational with more than 70 participants playing in two-person teams for two days in best ball and scramble formats. Now that it is May, the golf course is really shaping up, and it is looking and playing great. Many thanks to The Views staff and grounds crew.

The skins game is $5 and the league game on the first Thursday is the usual $4. A skins game actually favors a golfer whose game is a roller coaster over the Steady Eddy.

Unofficially, it looks like the 2023-2024 league season should begin Thursday, October 12. We look forward to seeing you all back, healthy and ready to play. “Half the time, twice the fun.”

The Cure for Cancer tournament was the culmination of a month of fundraising by all the of the golf clubs and the Pro Shop. A total of $47,885.30 was donated to the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

President’s Cup champion was Judy Oliver. Second place was Bonnie Svartstad. In the consolation round, it was Darlene Lamb over Barbara Armes for third and fourth place.

The Club Championship took place April 4, 7 and 11 and was not completed as of this printing. This 54-hole, total gross event is held over three days.

The Club Champion is the gross winner of the Championship Flight. Payouts are made to flight winners as well as to the Club Champion.

SCOV is fortunate to have The Views Golf Course, and this month the Foundation reports on two spring projects connected to our golfing community.

First, we recently helped fund a new electronic bulletin board at The Views Pro Shop, replacing an old physical bulletin board where announcements had to be manually displayed. The new display system makes it easier and more timely for information to be shared without paper.

Second, the Foundation also provided financial support for the annual Cure for Cancer Golf Tournament. Held in March, the tournament raised nearly $48,000 for cancer research at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. The tournament had 220 golfers participating (the course maximum) and almost as many volunteers assisting. The Foundation was proud to support this cause, which touches the lives of so many residents in our community.

The focus of this group is to share feelings and experiences with cancer risk, current cancer and post-cancer. You may be an individual with cancer or a loved one of a person with cancer. We hold this safe space to be able to discuss all aspects of cancer.

Karen Kane, who volunteers for our kiln team, has been a Clay Club member for seven years. Karen says she enjoys pottery because “I have the freedom to create whatever project I want. I can do that on the wheel or by handbuilding. And in our club, you get the help you need to accomplish your goal.” Handbuilding is her favorite because she can integrate two of her other interests, woodworking and glass, into her projects.

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

This is a model of the Lockheed Martin F-16CJ fighter plane built by club president Fred Faust. One can admire the way the model captures the look of the prototype, the level of craftsmanship in its construction and the fit and finish of its appearance. But it didn’t come alive for many modelers until club member and former U.S. Air Force and American Airlines pilot Ken Rosberg told members and visitors at our April meeting the story of the plane’s development in 1965 as the original Wild Weasel aircraft. The story of the cat and mouse tactics between combat aircraft and enemy air defense systems is a fascinating one, too long for this venue. Suffice it to say that with this model, as with so many, it is the story behind the miniature that brings life to it and gives interest to our model building. Come join us.

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about what we do, stop in on Monday mornings or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the Library and inside the Library.

The Sculpture Club mainly uses polymer clay compared to the wet clay that the Clay Club uses. So, what is the difference? Pottery clay is made from ingredients from the soil. Polymer clay is a flexible vinyl which is based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is mixed with plasticizer, stabilizer, lubricant and pigments, which allow it to be shaped and, when heated, becomes a hard material or a solid vinyl. Polymer clay is non-toxic and safe when it is used for crafting, modeling or as an artistic medium.

We also recently provided two new car seats for infants and toddlers.

This month we feature the work of our lost-wax casting team recreating a technique of ancient civilizations. The Egyptians excelled in metalworking and employed wax casting, a technique that entailed crafting a wax model, covering it in clay, then heating it to let the wax flow out, leaving a cavity in the mold. Molten metal was poured into this cavity, taking the shape of the original wax model. Once the metal cooled, the clay mold was broken to unveil the finished metal object. This process enabled the creation of intricate objects like figurines, jewelry and statues. Our members recreate this process with some modifications.

Although Doug Switzer never previously worked with the medium of glass, he always had the desire to experiment with stained glass. Two years ago, he decided to join the glass club and sign up for a stained glass class. A year later he made the decision to move on to fused glass. He states that there are unique challenges in working with both.

Doug has taken advantage of the wide variety of member classes. He enjoys working in the studio, appreciates his many mentors and finds this to be one of the friendliest clubs in SCOV.

Doug is a very busy man in our community. He enjoys participating in various water sports, is a member of the Woodworkers, plays poker on a weekly basis and is a member of the Theatre Club, where he graciously constructed the props for several plays.

On Thursday, May 18, 7-9 PM, our guest speaker is Dr. Richard Green, Assistant Director for Government Relations, Steward Observatory, at the University of Arizona. Dr. Green’s presentation will be “The Giant Magellan Telescope.” The University of Arizona is a major technical partner in producing the Giant Magellan Telescope. It will contain seven of the world’s largest mirrors, produced at the Richard Caris Mirror Lab located under the UArizona football stadium. The Giant Magellan Telescope is the largest Gregorian optical-infrared telescope in history. This telescope will allow studies of potential habitable planets.

The Wood Shop is quieter as many of our seasonal members leave for the summer. This month’s featured woodworker is Lynn Lamb, who was a part-timer for a few years before he became an SCOV full-timer in 2016.

Lynn is definitely one of the more unusual woodworkers in the shop. A commercial general contractor for 27 years in Lenexa, Kansas, he’s been making exceptionally beautiful guitars since 2017. Although a casual guitarist, his handmade guitars rival the most expensive and beautiful guitars commercially available. Lynn says that the SCOV Wood Shop is not only safe, well organized and equipped, but that the shop is filled with friendly and helpful woodworkers.

Have you looked into the Technology Lab lately? If you do, you will see numerous tables with almost no monitors or computers. Is the Technology Club folding? The simple answer is that we are very much active, and hundreds have attended our classes in the preceding months. The difference is that the 10+ year old monitors and computers have been removed and donated to the local AZ Veterans Home in Tucson.

As computers age, they are harder to update and meet the demands of today’s uses. In addition, most desktop tower computers are rapidly being replaced by laptops, phones or tablets. During our classes, it was clear that the older desktop computers were just not being used. In addition, they actually were a line of sight obstacle and took up desk space needed by those bringing their laptops and tablets to class. So, the old timers were retired.

If you’re interested in, or recently inundated with technology, feel free to attend one of our classes. Priority is always given to club members, but hey, 10 bucks a year is as close to free as you can get nowadays.

Brian Wacik, known as the Tucson dog whisperer, spoke about helpful tips and advice for our dogs. He teaches communication with our dogs, dog manners and obedience. He and his dog, Pedro, demonstrated how training using cues can make a huge difference. Brian emphasized the most important aspect of training is having patience.

The parking lot and other projects at the K9 Korral are valuable in maintaining a place for the dogs to romp. Please read email announcements and observe closures when we send out a notice.

The Starlight Dance Club hosted “Dancing with the Stars” in the Activity Center April 21. The community got a first-hand look at why we are so excited when professional and award winning dancers entertain the crowd with their beautiful dances and costumes. The April dance then followed.

Our May dance is scheduled for Friday, May 19, with tickets on sale for $10/cpl. Our dances typically include a short lesson and a brief session of line dancing and snacks. Intermediate waltz lessons are Wednesdays, May 3, 10 and 17, as well as beginner waltz or swing. Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Participants should be able to do a basic swim stroke. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most items are available at the pool. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help learn the various movements. We enjoy a great workout in a fun class.

Our club performs gentle water exercises approved by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion. Water exercise is especially helpful for arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Our members are fun, accepting, welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercise and love all of the friends I have found.”

Energetic Exercisers meet in the new, spacious Activity Center/ Auditorium, where reservations are no longer needed. Each month, exercisers receive a calendar that announces the focus for the day, such as aerobics, cardio tone, or interval training. Equipment such as weights, band, fitness circle, or body bar adds variety and is always optional. Overall, the goal for experienced instructor, Sally Martinez, is to help exercisers develop and maintain strength, balance, and heart health. Everybody moves at their own pace and can always receive suggestions for their individual needs. Dress is exercise casual with sport shoes required. SCOV residents join the club for

While most members are motivated recreational swimmers, we also include nationally-ranked master swimmers, triathletes and former club and university swimmers. The group generally swims about 2,400 yards, though some do more and some do less.

To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person needs to understand the basic principles. It takes a little time and patience as the exercises performed may be different from those you are familiar with, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, how to focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach the mat Pilates classes. They modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone. We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through their Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

The whitewinged dove is not the most popular bird in SCOV, but this warm weather visitor is one of the principal pollinators of saguaro blossoms. One of six species of doves in Arizona, this large dove and the mourning dove are the only ones to be found in SCOV.

We are a 110+ member, activity-oriented group and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips (we carpool) to learn more about the birds here in Arizona. If you are interested in joining us, be sure to ask Peggy (above) to add you to our mailing list so that we can keep you up to date on the trips, which tend to be more variable as the warmer weather approaches.

Our experienced volunteer guides offer hikes at all levels and distances in some of the most scenic mountain and desert landscapes of Arizona. Whether you want to hike for a couple of hours or enjoy an all-day experience, the Hiking Club has a hike for you. More hikes are scheduled during the winter season, with fewer summer hikes offered. Summer hikes will start earlier due to the heat, but we are still hiking. Remember to bring sunscreen, water and electrolytes.

Wheels for Kids

Do you remember your first bike? Wheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing rehabbed bicycles to children and families in need in the Tucson area. To date, we have donated 4,500 bikes to local nonprofits, who then distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations include Refugee Focus, Boys and Girls Club of Tucson, Children’s Advocacy Center, Casa de los Niños, Ronald McDonald House and Youth On Their Own.
