From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors Ronna Heinig, scov.ronna.heinig@gmail.com HOAs Past, Present and Future by Ronna Heinig Historically, HOAs came into existence in the mid-19th century as a way for land developers to market and sell their homes. But the concept really took off in the 1960s and today more than 69 million Americans belong to an HOA, and that number is growing every day. Today one in four of us live in some sort of HOA. HOAs are governed by an elected Board of Directors. These individuals are your friends and neighbors. Each member of the Board of Directors must act in the best interest of the Association so as to meet current needs and assure the Association’s future viability. That is not always the easiest thing to do as we make many financial decisions that must be based on economics (what we need to do) and not politics (what we would like to do). Some associations have large cash reserves on hand to meet asset or capital needs as they arise. Others have lower fees and rely on special assessments, funds levied outside of HOA dues, for these types of expenditures. For example, when a major expense, such as replacing a roof arises and the HOAs reserves lack the funds to pay for it, the association may charge each homeowner a special assessment. These levies can run into thousands of dollars in addition to your dues. Here in SCOV, we have had excellent financial management which has resulted in over $26 million dollars in assets without the burden of debt. We have reserves for both asset replacement and capital improvements which allow us to pay cash for needed improvements, such as our remodeled Activity Center, instead of depending on special assessments, dues increases and/or the accumulation of debt. As our Association evolves and our wants and needs are met, we must continually resupply our reserves to assure financial stability for today and tomorrow. This is done through our budgeted dues payments, good financial management practices such as our Comcast and AT&T revenue streams, and also through our new home purchase Capital Contribution Fee, which is like a new home buyer purchasing a slice of our Association and all our amenities.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Monsoon Safety Now that we are in the middle of our monsoon season this is good information for everyone. Warm weather usually means fun in the sun, but summer heat also can bring severe weather. Threatening thunderstorms often loom large on summer afternoons so it’s important to be prepared for downpours and accompanying lightning, which can strike outdoors or indoors. Consider the following suggestions when planning both outdoor and indoor events this summer to reduce the risk of a lightning strike. • Watch the weather. Pay attention to your local weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If there’s a chance of thunderstorms, consider rescheduling or moving events indoors. If that’s not possible, have an emergency plan in place in case a severe storm rolls in and designate a sufficient nearby structure as an emergency shelter. • Stay inside. If severe thunderstorms are imminent, go indoors and wait until they pass. Safe, enclosed shelters include homes, schools, offices, shopping malls and vehicles with hard tops and closed windows. Open structures and spaces do not provide adequate protection. • Duck and crouch. If you’re caught outside during a severe storm, it’s important to crouch low on the ground, tuck your head and cover your ears to help protect yourself from harm. Do not lie down; lightning strikes can produce extremely strong electrical currents that run along the top of the ground, and laying horizontally increases electrocution risk. • Turn off faucets. During a thunderstorm, lightning can sometimes be conducted through the plumbing. Avoid any type of contact with running water, including bathing, showering, and washing your hands, dishes or clothes. • Turn off electronics. All electrical appliances–televisions, computers, laptops, gaming systems, stoves and more– that are plugged into an electrical outlet could carry a current from a lightning strike. Surge protectors will reduce the risk of damaging electronics. • Stay away from windows. Not only is lightning a threat, but high winds and hail create flying debris that could be harmful during a thunderstorm. Close all windows and doors and keep away from them.

Sun City Oro Valley has transitioned to a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone system. That means our phones use the Internet to transmit calls rather than the old POTS lines (that’s Plain Old Telephone Service lines). As you may recall, during the demolition of the Activity Center entry, our telephone wires were also severed, creating a challenging time for phone line installers. Apparently our 35-year-old phone line system had lots of unique twists and turns as it was being installed. It was time to transition to the VOIP phone system. Lines are in, staff is learning the system and the bugs are being worked out. All the phone numbers are the same and listed in the Tipster, page 2, or at the top of the articles. Thank you for your support during this stressful time when reaching us by phone was a challenge. SCOV residents are the best.

From the SCOV website, click “Library” then “Online Catalog/Account.” From here you can use the drop-down menu under collections and choose DVD. Images will appear as well as their availability. Now that monsoon season is here, this is the perfect time to stay indoors during the hot afternoon heat and enjoy a movie. Thanks to the support of our community, we will continue to add over 15 large print books and approximately 30 new books/items to our collection each month. New titles are advertised in “This Week in SCOV” and are displayed in the front of the Library.

Different types of exercise benefits your health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance. Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age. Meet our new co-presidents, Kari and Carol. Kari says, “Our Library is fantastic, but it doesn’t happen without the dedication and work of volunteers. I wanted to support this valuable amenity by serving on the board. I spent my Saturdays as a child in our local library getting lost in learning and imagination. I love crime mysteries. Listening to Great Reads has opened my eyes to many other genres.” Carol says, “No matter where I lived, the library has always been special to me. I have supported libraries by serving on many boards to ensure the library continues to be available to everyone. Having our own excellent SCOV Library was at the top of my list as to why we chose this community.”

Featured artist this month is Lorraine Buck. Lorraine started painting many years ago and began focusing on the shapes and colors provided by nature and ancient forms. She was inspired by anLorraine Buck cient artists to paint animals based on the cave paintings of Southern France and Northern Spain. The animals etched and painted by ancient people seem to leap off the cave wall and are portrayed with incredible detail. After coming to SCOV, she was drawn to the Clay Club, and especially throwing clay on the wheel. She fires her clay to include horsehair, which is added to the pot when it is at 1,300° F. The hair burns into the clay and creates black squiggles as it burns. Saggar fired pots are created by coating the pots with various organic materials and salts and oxides. Because the pottery is low-fired and unglazed, it is not suitable for liquids.

The Government Affairs Committee’s role is to organize events and materials to facilitate communication and interaction between our residents and Oro Valley, Pima County, state and federal officials. This includes legislation, meetings with candidates, utilities and land use planning. The committee’s charter also includes health and safety as it relates to communication and information relating to government. We developed a COVID-19 presentation (focusing on zip code 85755) which is updated by a committee member every two weeks and posted on the committee web page suncityorovalley.com/committees/government-affairs/. As noted in the data presentation, Pima County currently has a low COVID-19 Community Level and the Disease Metrics, Healthcare System Availability and Public Health Tracing and Prevention all meet criteria to rate in the low Community Level. Summer is here, and residents find it advantageous to park in the shade provided by the solar panels in the parking lots at the Mountain Vista complex. When parking under the panels, you might notice the electrical boxes on some of the vertical poles that support the panels. Those boxes contain the inverters that convert the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC power that is used in Association buildings, thereby saving the HOA money and reducing the community’s carbon footprint. The humming noise at the boxes indicates the equipment is operating normally. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. We are currently meeting via Zoom. July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in Southern Arizona. In regard to golf course maintenance, the start of the monsoons is bittersweet. The good news is the golf course will start to heal up quickly after the hot, dry temperatures in June due to the increased levels of humidity in the air. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Several years ago, a thunderstorm generated a large amount of water north of Sun City, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were playing holes number 4 and 5 when the wash began to fill. Two golf carts then tried to cross the wash and got stuck. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and to get the carts off the golf course safely. Please remember, when these washes are running, they are as powerful as raging rivers. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. At the minimum, the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue the cart. Be aware that during monsoons, washes can flow even when it is not raining on the golf course. Distant rain will fill the washes because SCOV is at the bottom of a hill.

We started out with a field trip to the Wuertz Gourd Farm near Casa Grande where we selected gourds for the quilt and other treasures for ourselves. We also took a quick side trip to the Greek restaurant in Florence which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The next week we had a day of cutting, cleaning, and preparing the quilt squares for decoraThe club’s gourd quilt tion. Each member took a couple quilt squares to decorate. The finished squares were assembled and hung from pieces of dried cholla. The resulting wall hangings are an amazingly beautiful reflection of the talent and diverse artistic flare of our members. You can view one of the quilts at Desert Oasis throughout this summer. The Gourd Club always welcomes new members and meets every Monday and Friday in the Artisan Center.

An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopWe delivered 15 sleeping mats for the homeless in May ping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats. If you wish to donate bags, please flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway, or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Please do not drop off newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Participants should be able to do a basic swim stroke. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most items are available at the pool. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help learn the various movements. Lesser nighthawks arrive here in May and stay much of the summer enjoying their favorite diet of flying insects. Extremely maneuverable, they can be seen in SCOV at dusk gliding gracefully and then suddenly darting for a Steve Holmes photo snack. They are a fairly large bird with pointed wings and a stripe near the end of the wingtips. Sometimes there will be a similar bird doing the same thing, but with more rounded wing tips and no stripe; that would be the Common Poorwill. Unlike the nighthawk they will attack the insects from the ground up. Our 90-plus member Birding Group has now entered the summer hiatus, with only ad hoc trips likely throughout the summer. Scheduled trips will resume in September, but if you wish to know about our spontaneous summer trips, be sure to get on our mailing list by contacting Peggy Smith above.

Attendance has increased for table tennis while room availability has decreased. Many other clubs are now using rooms that were originally designated for table tennis. Wallyball is volleyball played on a racquetball court with three to five players on a side. Players use the side walls to create angles, but the ball cannot hit the ceiling or the back wall of the opposing team. It is a terrific aerobic activity that tones muscles and improves coordination and balance and it’s great fun. Come visit to see if this game is for you.
