Wood Carving Bob Ash 520-282-3688 SCOVCarvers@gmail.com Sat., 9-Noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary
Carving sessions should restart by the middle of October. Come to the Artisan Center/Lapidary Room on Saturday morning to meet some wood carvers and see what projects we are working on. If you think you might be interested in wood carving, we can help you get started with some basswood, some tools, a project and basic instructions. If you are already a wood carver, bring your tools and a project and join the conversation.
Woodworking Pres. Gary Casner 303-880-4120 gcasner1@comcast.net VP Karen Curry 708-822-3057 kindheart77@att.net Next meeting Thu., Oct., 27, 9 AM, Wood Shop www.scovwoodworkingclub.com
The Wood Shop is starting to hum with activity as our seasonal members begin filtering back into town. For many SCOV residents, the Wood Shop is their happy place, in large part because of our talented and skilled shop monitors. Larry Brophy is the head Wood Shop monitor and the featured woodworker of the month.
Larry creates functional art. He’s the creator of gnat caps, the wine glass protector that keeps bugs out of your glass. His latest functional art creations are his Romeo and Juliet cutting boards created from domestic and exotic hardwoods. Not only useful as cutting and charcuterie boards, an acrylic wall hanger keeps them handy and off the kitchen counter.
A new member orientation is held at the Wood Shop the first Wednesday of each month, 4 PM. Call Bill Norton 480-980-5493 for further instructions. For questions or more information, visit the website or call an officer. Romeo and Juliet boards attached to the side of a refrigerator

The Astronomy Club’s first meeting is Wednesday, October 19, 7-9 PM, Catalina Vista. Our meetings will be the third Wednesday of the month, 7 PM, Catalina Vista.
The club received wonderful news last month. The SCOV Foundation awarded the club a grant to purchase a telescope system with a mounted camera. The camera projects telescope images to a monitor for viewing celestial objects. Multiple people can enjoy the celestial object at the same time, rather than one at a time through an eye piece, plus the image will be in color. This grant will greatly enhance our star party experience. Thank you to Bob Jorgenson and Ed Jacoby for submitting the grant request and a special thank you to the Sun City Vistoso Foundation for awarding the grant.
Be prepared at the first meeting to finalize an officers’ slate. Please consider supporting the club’s future by volunteering for one of the open positions. Orion Nebula taken with the same telescope system as the club’s new system. Photo by member Ed Pastore

Hello ladies of SCOV. We pray you are all doing well, those who stayed here over the summer, and those returning to our beautiful community. Wednesday, October 5, we will begin our new study entitled “Portraits of Strength: The Women of the Judges.” The format will be the same, a workbook and a video in class. Here is a synopsis: “This study explores the unique lives of the women of the Judges: Deborah, Jael, Ruth, Naomi, and Hannah. Each woman had her own personality of strength in faith, character and hope. In a time when everyone did what was right in their own eyes, these women looked to the Lord and found their strength in Him. They show us every woman has a place to play in the kingdom of God.” Call Elaine if you have any questions. See you Wednesday.

The Genealogy Club will meet Monday, October 17, 1 PM, Catalina Vista. The program is entitled “The 1950 Census” and will be presented by Amy Urman. If you are a member of the Genealogy Club, plan to attend. Let’s have a big turnout for our first meeting. If you aren’t a member, you may pay your dues at the meeting and they will apply through December, 2023. Guests are welcome to attend our monthly meetings to check out the advantages of our club.
The Genealogy Lab has access to the 1950 Census on Ancestry.com and you are able to do your research on either a PC or MAC. Remember to bring a flash drive, so you can download all of your great finds. Members of the Genealogy Club may access the lab and library anytime the Welcome Center is open.
