The committee met on September 1 and discussed with Janet Blackwell, Restaurant Manager, issues facing The Views in preparation for residents returning from their summer break.

The restaurant is still operating with a profit, and community support has been great during the summer, with much support on music nights. We plan to add a couple more music nights each month, and a new Coffee with a Cop is scheduled. Gratuities are still at a high level, and your regular continued support is appreciated by the restaurant staff. Grab your neighbor and take advantage of the best value breakfasts in Pima County. If you are a club officer, think about working out a social event where The Views can supply the lunch or refreshments. Finally, take notice of the restaurant artwork that periodically changes, thanks to Joan Kelley.

Book lovers and Friends of the Library (FOL) members have so much to look forward to this fall and winter. The Library will be sponsoring author talks in October and November. We will have a new Great Reads in November, which will highlight some of the most interesting and best books published in the past year. FOL will sponsor a gift wrap event in December where, for a donation, you can put all those burdensome gift wrapping chores in our hands. The Library will sponsor several story times for visiting children between Christmas and New Year’s, and as always, we’ll have our ever-lively Book Bingo. Check Coming Events for details.

Featured artists for October are Sharon Henderson and Trisha Bergen. Sharon makes photo cards for the shop with inspirational words or verses. “I learned to knit very young and have baby blankets and dish cloths in the shop.” Sharon also sews wine bottle covers and seatbelt covers as well as microwave bowl holders. “I enjoy working in the shop as it is a wonderful way of meeting people and sharing how wonderful Sun City is.”

Many pathways led Trisha to glass fusing. She was raised in the Hudson Valley, majored in art in college and traveled the world. She settled for a long time in Taos, NM. Absorbed in glass fusing, she loves both the flexibility and the restrictions of warm glass. Every bit of glass is hand-cut, handshaped. “I layer and fire the glass in my kiln, working with it several times until I see what I love.”

Government Affairs Chair Earl Vittitoe scovga@gmail.com Second Wed., 1 PM, WC1 www.suncityorovalley.com/committees/government-affairs/

On August 31 and September 8, the Government Affairs Committee (GAC) held two successful forums with the Oro Valley Police Department. The August 31 forum featured Police Chief Kara Riley, who made a presentation on the inner workings of the Oro Valley Police Department, the recruitment program and how the police work to keep Oro Valley and SCOV safe. She then took questions from the audience.

The September 8 informal forum, Coffee with a Cop, was held at The Views Restaurant from 8-9 AM. It provided residents the opportunity to meet and have discussions with members of the police department and share their thoughts with the officers.

GAC plans on making Coffee with a Cop a regular event.
