Tips for Desert Living
by Ronna Heinig The Sonoran Desert is certainly beautiful and green. Not Michigan green, but certainly not the dusty brown of Las Vegas, and it comes with a variety of unique critters.
First and foremost, if you own a kitty that was an outdoor cat, it is now an indoor cat. We have a prevalence of kitty and doggie predators. Bobcats and coyotes roam nonchalantly throughout our backyards. Fido’s Friends have a nice secure dog park for our canine family members, and the club provides snake aversion training as well.
Which brings me to snake season. Who would have guessed? Spring is when the rattlesnakes emerge from their dens and are particularly active. The black and white striped king snakes are my best friends. They eat rattlesnakes, and are constrictors, so no venom, just don’t pick them up.
Next we have javelinas that travel in large groups called squadrons. They are reminiscent of a pig but are not. The babies are adorable. They love the acorns that fall from oak trees, and they seem to have put my house on their preferred dining list.
Pack rats can be a problem. I’m not talking mice here. These guys can chew through the wiring in your car or RV causing mega dollars worth of damage. A little strobe light that can be purchased at the local hardware store and placed in your engine compartment will discourage these pests.
Mosquitoes and such aren’t much of a worry, but I would stay away from bees; you could get some pretty nasty stings. Tiny lizards are just plain cute, but difficult to catch if they sneak into your house when you open the door, so be on the lookout.
The termites here are ground termites, not flying ones. They build “straws” from your ceiling or create a dirt-like trail along a wall. A good exterminator solves this problem, and it doesn’t involve tenting your entire home.
You will want to keep your garage door closed to discourage critter visitors. Keep the fire department number handy, as they will relocate any rattlesnakes for you.
The critters of our beautiful Sonoran desert are unique, but please remember that they are wild animals and we should not feed or disturb them. We should respect their space and learn to live in harmony with them. General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080
Still Experiencing Some Disruptions
Perhaps you can remember pre-Covid when you could obtain parts just by going to the store. Everything was always in stock. If you wanted a part that was not a part of normal inventory, the store could order it for you and it would be at the store in less than a week. Even sooner if you put a rush on it and were willing to pay the expedited shipping. The provider of services always had plenty of labor available to provide for your needs, and wait times were usually within a few days to a few weeks.
My, how things have changed. Store shelves often are not full. We’ve learned once again how to make do with something other than what we went to the store to purchase. If we are required to order a part, odds are pretty good that we will have to wait quite a while for it, and once it comes in, we may still have to wait for workers to be available to install it.
Here at SCOV, we are very fortunate that we don’t have to wait very often for many of the services we need. There are, however, some services that we contract for that take longer than we would expect or longer than promised. I apologize for that. Our staff does its best to get vendors that provide goods and services as best they can, but sometimes they have difficulties with labor availability or supply chain, and are powerless to do anything about it. When this happens, we so appreciate your patience. You can be confident that our team members are doing the best they can to provide the products and services that you’ve come to expect.

New Sports Reservation System
We are excited to announce a new sports reservation system available on our website. This will let residents reserve times for bocce, tennis, pickleball, Desert Oasis courts and AFC lap lanes. It will also let you know when the club is playing. This system can be found on multiple pages on the website including www.suncityorovalley.com > fitness and club pages where reservations are available. You can create an account in the new system now. On Sunday, October 9, you may begin making reservations for Sunday, October 16.
SignupGenius was a quick fix for our Covid needs, but it has many limitations behind the scenes. The end of life for SignupGenius for sports reservations in SCOV will be Saturday, October 15 (many clubs will continue to use it). So, create your new account today and get prepared to start making reservations. We hope this new feature will provide you more information about the amenities and their availability in the community. It might even inspire you to try out a new sport. Lifestyle Coordinator - Brenda Puzzele-Stoltz bpuzzele-stoltz@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077
I want to take a moment to introduce myself; I am the new Lifestyle Coordinator.
My name is Brenda, and I have been married for the past 14 years to a wonderful man named Steve, who served in the Navy for eight years. I have enjoyed working with seniors and veterans for the past 25 years and look forward to getting to know the residents of SCOV. After receiving my B.A. from Thomas Edison State College, I was accepted to the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, New York City. I received an Art Therapy certificate and completed my internship in the Founding Hospital in SoHo New York. In realizing seniors need a better quality of life, I went back to school. For the next two years, I studied to be a Nationally Certified Activities Director through Alternative Solutions. It has been my privilege to design and implement structured activities to enhance the lives of active adults. I look forward to spending time with you and hearing all the things that make you smile. Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

ARC Submittals
Residents continue to make many improvements to their homes. Delays in getting qualified workers and materials have been frustrating. Submitting to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for approval of your project should not add any undue burden. If you need help with your submittal, please contact the Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier, and she will help you with any questions you have about the process.
The first and perhaps most important step: Please read the SCOV Development Standards so that you know what you are able to do to the exterior of your home prior to getting quotes from vendors, etc. This is critical if you have any deadlines in mind. Check our SCOV website at Members > Documents > Development Standards. Paper copies are available at the Welcome Center.
Please be prepared by having made the decisions about a contractor, materials, colors, all dimensions, placement and any other specifics. Take pictures of the location where you want to make changes to the exterior of your home, pictures of samples and brochures about materials and colors. If your project involves walls, fencing or gates, be sure to know where your property lines are located and obtain a sketch of each segment of the project from your vendor with all the dimensions. If your project will impact the property of your neighbor, get the needed permission letters.
Be aware that expansions of the footprint of your home involve a more detailed process that can take additional time before an ARC decision is made. Check out Board Policy ARC-006, which is also found on the SCOV website at Members > Documents > Board Policy.

The Library welcomes local Tucson author Becky Masterson. Nominated for the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Barry and CWA Gold Dagger awards, her crime novels transcend the genre with page turning twists and turns from a tough and cunning older investigator. Details for her presentation are in Coming Events on page 11.
A special thank you to all the residents who have donated puzzles to the Library. The puzzle wall has never looked better with such a wide variety of scenes and sizes to choose from. Please help yourself to a puzzle, and then return it to the Library when you are finished. We are happy to reshelve these to keep the collection balanced.
Mark your calendars: the Tucson Festival of Books has set a date for their spring event, March 4 and 5 at the University of Arizona campus.
