SCOV Library - Michelle Mooney www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley mmooney@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

Welcome to fall, and to our patrons returning to SCOV. Many new books have been added to the Library in September, and more are on our pre-order list for October including: The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman, Taste: My Life Through Food by Stanley Tucci and The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. This month our featured end caps will focus on mysterious, spine-chilling and out-of-this-world titles. On your next visit to the Library, check out one of these new adventures. Our fabulous volunteers have updated the puzzle section. Please stop by and borrow a new autumn or holiday scene.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073

Balance Exercises You Can Do Anywhere, Anytime

These anytime, anywhere exercises will help you improve your balance. And you can do them as often as you like, as long as you have something sturdy nearby to hold onto if you become unsteady. Walk heel to toe. Position your heel just in front of the toes of the opposite foot each time you take a step. Your heel and toes should touch or almost touch. Practice standing up and sitting down without using your hands. Stand on one foot. You can do this while waiting in line at the grocery store or while brushing your teeth using the timer on your toothbrush as a reminder when to alternate feet.

Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)

Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis hours of operation are on page 2.

Tuesday, October 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Wednesday, October 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues rather than telephone in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing.

Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the REPORT A PROBLEM tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy. Active Health Chair Rita Menet 920-659-1428 rita.menet@gmail.com Next meeting Mon., Nov. 8, 3 PM, WC1

Good news: Our support groups are meeting again. Please see the Partnered Organization section of this issue for more information. Active Health Committee is working to bring informative presentations on health and wellness to our community for our winter season. Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

Fences are our number one submittal for changes. If you are thinking about adding a fence or wall to the perimeter of your yard, you will want to start by talking to your neighbor.

Establishing your property lot line is important for you, your neighbor and the Association. Locating the monument, a quarter size marker on top of the wall or a piece of rebar on the wall or in the ground will help identify who owns the wall or if it’s a party wall.

If no rebar or monument is found, you need to talk with your neighbor and come to a decision as to the location of your property line. The best way of determining the lot line is to have your property surveyed.

Submittals must include a neighbor’s permission for building the wall or fence. You must give length and height, and if there is a gate you must also include the dimension. All fences must be weathered brown; if you are adding on to the height of a brick or block wall, make sure your materials match and provide a sample for the ARC member who visits your home.

You can find additional details in the SCOV Development Standards about how to interpret property line markers position in relation to ownership and sole or shared maintenance responsibility. Feel free to contact the ARC for additional assistance.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time, and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices.

The SCOV website (Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV.” An informal working group comprised of representatives from each of the artisan clubs met over the winter of 2021 to research and write this discussion paper.

The ACRTF is now building on the previous work and will identify and work with an architect to develop a comprehensive recommendation for the renovation of the 34-year-old Artisan Center facility.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

The annual paper phone book is in production, but we do not yet have shipping and delivery dates. I will provide updates in “This Week in SCOV.”

Once the books arrive, we rely on an army of volunteers to deliver them to every house in our community. Each volunteer is assigned part of a neighborhood, averaging about 35 houses. If you’d like to volunteer, email me.

Did you miss the deadline for the paper phone book? No worries, you can still update your listing in our online directory. The online version is updated monthly, thus always has the most up-to-date information.

To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form, “To change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List.

The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk in the Activity Center during business hours until renovation begins. Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently.

Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) meets quarterly and holds a financial conversations with residents each quarter. We welcome our new Librarian, Michelle Mooney. She will continue making the Library a useful resource. If you have the opportunity, please stop to introduce yourself to Michelle.

We wish the best to Kate Cusumano as she enters full retirement. We appreciate all her efforts over the years to improve the Library. Thank you, Kate.

Gift Shop Co-Chairs Melanie Stinson 971-506-8655, Maxine Yunker 970-691-7990 Gift Shop 520-917-8051 Shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 10 AM-4 PM, Sat., 10 AM-1 PM www.suncityorovalley.com/gift-shop

Julie Holtry, left, and Nancy Eckhoff

October brings expanded hours of operation for the Gift Shop, from 10 AM until 4 PM weekdays. We have new and returning artists and a softer atmosphere to welcome

you. Check us out.

Featured artists for the month are Julie Holtry and Nancy Eckhoff. Julie makes jewelry and Oriental-themed note cards. Her trademark is her pendant dragonfly which graces the necks of many local residents. Julie says, “I think I have a dragonfly for every outfit I have. They are such fun to wear!”

Julie particularly likes to use dichroic glass which has a gem-like shimmering quality.

In 2014, Nancy moved to SCOV and discovered the Glass Studio. One of her favorite techniques is called on-edge. This technique requires a lot of strip cutting, designing layout and creating fancy component center pieces, then slumping into a mold. She also makes the popular bird friends plaques with uplifting and humorous quotes.

Government Affairs Chair Don Teiser 520-333-2525 donteiser@gmail.com Second Wed., 1 PM, WC1

The nonpartisan Government Affairs Committee conducts political forums and secures speakers on issues that are of special interest to our community.

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz 603-459-4219 nashuachristmas@comcast.net www.SCOVLites.com

The Holiday Lights Committee is finally finished making our fancy flowers out of lights for this year’s display. We have met with staff about start dates and new displays for this year, and everything looks great at this point.

We are working on details for our Holiday House Tour on December 4. We would still like another house or two to participate in this important fundraiser, so if you or someone you know has an exceptional display inside their home, please do let us know. We will require masks on all attendees and hope to limit the number of visitors in each house at one time, just to be on the safe side.

We have developed a new website about the Holiday

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/

October is usually when our SCOV Loan Room gets busier as many of our residents return. Reservations may be made up to two months in advance of when you need an item, either at the Loan Room or on the SCOV website. When using the website, you are making a request which will be confirmed by email once our volunteers have had a chance to be sure what you are requesting is available. Please give us a week for that return email. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, for walk-ins, returns and reservations. Please bring someone with you if you cannot lift or handle your items by yourself. Always bring your SCOV card, and let us know if your address, phone number or email has changed. Thank you for your continued support of your Loan Room and the aluminum can collection program.

Long Range Planning Chair Sharon Kennedy kennesk@comcast.net Second and Fourth Wed., 10 AM, on Zoom

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5-to-10-year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Committee documents, past agendas, minutes and our Request Project Consideration form are available on the SCOV website. Our meetings are open to all residents.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3

Have You Recently Returned?

If you were away for some time, you missed a fantastic monsoon season. The foliage and weeds grew abundantly in your yard. Don’t forget to remove weeds which appear in cracks of your driveway, your sidewalk, and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. If your plants protrude over sidewalks, they need to be trimmed back so as not to injure passing pedestrians. Suckers under trees should also be cut off, down to the ground. If you have pre-emergent herbicide applied to your yard to stop the germination of seeds, you won’t have as many weeds next year; check with your landscaper or pest control professional.

With cooler weather here, take a look at your mailbox, flag and post to see if they need painting. If you can’t do the job yourself, check the Consumer Referral Vendor List on our SCOV website for someone who will paint it for a nominal fee.

Welcome back. Please continue to take pride in doing your part to keep up the excellent appearance of our community.

Nominating

Why the Board Needs Me and What’s Involved

It is the time of year the Sun City Oro Valley Nominating Committee is searching for qualified candidates to fill positions on the Board of Directors. We invite you to attend an informational meeting, “Why the Board Needs Me and What’s Involved,” to be held Thursday, October 28, 1 PM, WC3.

This meeting has been informally structured for one hour to include expectations, time commitment, an overview of the community’s financial position, candidate support during campaigns and a question-and-answer segment. All residents are welcome; however, the agenda is geared to those with an interest in serving the community in a Board capacity, either this year or in the future. You are not expected to commit to running for the Board at the meeting. The Nominating Committee will follow up if you request more information.

Please plan to attend, as our community needs people who are dedicated to the idea of preserving and improving our quality of life. Regardless of your background and experiences, everyone has something they can bring to the Board. It is an experience of a lifetime and has many positive rewards resulting from Board achievements.

Thank you in advance for your interest in this great community.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

October is the month of witches, goblins and creepy critters. It’s important that you make sure your garage doors are closed so as not to allow any of these unwanted creatures into your home. Also, remember to keep looking out for your neighbors. A special thanks to everyone who continues to work to keep our community safe, i.e., the Oro Valley Police Department, SCOV staff, family, friends and neighbors. Enjoy Halloween with family and friends. Be healthy and continue to stay safe.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, via Zoom

The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course in addition to threatening homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee, together with HOA staff and experienced experts in these matters, will conduct an inspection during October. The committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in-person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

As SCOV picks up speed for the fall and winter, be sure to update your club or committee’s Tipster article. We prefer that each committee and club submit a Tipster form each month, even if your information has not changed. This lets us know exactly what you want. The Tipster form can be found at www.suncityorovalley.com/news-info/the-tipster/ submit-article/.
