security tasks off the shoulders of the car wash owner and employees. This allows the workers to focus on their jobs. Security guards at a self-service car wash can keep an eye out for suspicious activity allowing customers to clean their cars comfortably and safely. Maintain order During an emergency, whether criminal, fire, or medical, the presence of a security guard can help reduce panic and maintain calm until law enforcement and EMT’s arrive. Keeping people calm in hectic situations is essential for their safety and professional security guards have the training to keep order during these difficult times. Maintain civility Maintaining and restoring order during an emergency needs to be part of any security plan. A professional security firm will provide you with trained guards who are knowledgeable and able to execute safety plans. De-escalation tactics can help ease tense situations that can occur between customers and even employees. For example, a verbal fight occurs because another person cut them off the only open vacuum or is taking too long using the hand wash service station. A well-trained security guard can de-escalate the situation and help the customers work out the issue in a civil manner without further escalation or the need to get law enforcement involved. Provide customer service Security guards can also be representatives of the business. A guard can watch the front desk meaning they will have a great deal of interaction with the customers and other
employees. Security guards can help direct people to managers who can further assist them when complicated issues arise. When working with the public you want a professional who is kind, courteous and represents themselves and your business in a professional manner. Hiring personable security lets you communicate to your customers that your business is professional customer service oriented. Save money Hiring a security guard to protect your business can also help you save money in the long run. Instead of continually paying to replace equipment or fix damage, security guards can prevent this from happening to begin with. Security guards can help with insurance claims by surveilling the business, so you have the right documentation to prove that you have taken the proper steps with your claim. When speaking with a security firm’s management team make sure the guards have all the proper licensing and training needed under state and local regulations. Hiring a professional security to protect your car wash will give you peace of mind knowing that your property, customers, and employees are safe in the event of a crime or emergency. - Bill Herzog, Owner of LionHeart Security Services

BEYOND BRIGHT LIGHTS: ENGAGE ALL SENSES TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS MARKETING When it comes to identifying and deploying exciting
and innovative new ways to attract drivers to their sites, it appears that vehicle wash operators have seen the “light.” Namely, they are utilizing the latest in exterior, interior and arch display lighting, along with sound-reproduction technologies, to create a visually and aurally attractive wash experience. In fact, analysis of vehicle wash through-rate patterns indicates that offering an engaging and memorable wash experience can increase customer loyalty by as much as 20%, with loyal customers 86% more likely to spend more for a brand they are loyal to. While the advances in lighting and sound technology have been an undeniable boon to wash operators as they look to expand their customer base while keeping existing customers engaged, an optimized sight-and-sound experience is just one arrow in a marketing quiver that can go well beyond the five senses. Keep The Five Alive In addition to optimizing the sight-and-sound experience inside the wash bay, operators would be wise to fully target all five senses in the search for effective ways to increase traffic at their vehicle wash sites: • Sight: The first goal is to get that driver to make the conscious decision to actually enter the wash site. In order to do this, the site must be well lit with engaging signage with color and movement that catches the eye, a clean appearance and nice landscaping. Drivers hate potholes, so make sure that the driveway is well maintained, with no trash on the ground. If the wash consists of a manned tunnel, outfit employees in sharp, clean uniforms, and train them to be attentive and engaging with a controlled sense of urgency without hurrying, which can create nervousness in the driver. The interior of the wash must be inviting and uncluttered, easy to enter with a feeling of openness that can be enhanced through the use of effective overhead and sidewall lighting. In other words, do not store non-essential or unrelated equipment in a murky, dingy wash bay. • Sound: It’s a fact of life that the machinery that performs the wash process will emit noise. The trick to ensuring that ambient noise is not off putting to vehicle occupants is to design the wash bay so that the level and shape of the noise will be non-offensive or agitating. Some operators have found success in this realm by piping in popular music, while others use tranquil sounds at a decibel level
that still allows the occupants of the vehicle to engage in conversations or conduct phone calls. Additionally, while it’s true that some inherent wash sounds just can’t be overcome, the other senses can be targeted during the wash process so that attention is diverted from the sound of the wash equipment and dryers. • Smell: A bad smell that enters the vehicle cabin during the wash process creates a bad overall experience for the driver through both mental and physical reactions that will linger, which can affect future wash buying decisions. Therefore, it is imperative that wash bays are kept presentable via a regular cleaning schedule, while dirty wash water is routinely reclaimed or disposed of so that it does not sit in the pit and become “funky.” Positive smells can also be created during the wash process through pretreatment of wash water, or by using scented wash chemicals and waxes. Research has shown that different scents will evoke different feelings in vehicle passengers; for example, lemon will evoke cleanliness, while lavender produces a sense of calm. • Touch: Vehicles are large investments that must be treated carefully, so drivers must be convinced before they even enter the wash bay that there is little to no risk of damage occurring as their vehicles are touched during the wash process. This requires the wash equipment to be properly and regularly maintained so that it will reliably deliver a gentle and damage-free wash process. Operators can be proactive in allaying any fears of damage occurring by posting educational pieces on the damage control capabilities of the wash system on the wash’s website, via social media posts and through flyers that can be made available at the wash entrance or inside the store. • Taste: Umm, what? No, we’re not saying that vehicle occupants will want to physically “taste” the wash process, but that process can tap into a “taste” for a snack, which will help drive business to an attached c-store. Use incentives to get people to stop in for an impulse buy or to refuel. Many operators have found success by offering a free coffee, soft drink or candy bar with a wash, or 10, 15 or 20 cents off per gallon of gasoline with the purchase of a wash. Beyond The Big Five In addition to the five tangible senses that everyone is familiar with, there are other more nebulous “senses” that can be manipulated as a way to improve vehicle wash

traffic: a sense of positivity, value, accomplishment and community come to mind. The most significant of these is the overall positive feeling a good wash experience will leave with the customer, buttressed by the perception that they received good value for their money. These are lasting impressions that will prompt the driver to return in the future, resulting in a growing and loyal customer base. Satisfied customers can also be the wash’s best spokespeople, with positive word of mouth playing a critical role in communicating the benefits of the wash to a wider range of drivers. These days, with ready access to the Internet and websites expressly dedicated to customer reviews, the post-wash experience can be just as important as the actual wash-bay experience. There will, inevitably, be some bad reviews. In these instances, wash operators should not shy away or ignore them. Use them as educational tools that help give a well-rounded view of the wash and how it is operating. If a preponderance of reviews indicate that something just isn’t working, don’t be afraid to reassess and make changes, or even eliminate it; being stubbornly married to a bad idea can be as bad or worse than having no ideas at all. And, if time allows, try to respond to every comment or review, with those that had a positive experience having their feelings reinforced, while those with a complaint will be placated and may even be more prone to give the wash a second chance. This will create a sense among drivers that the operators care about them and their feelings, and will work to build on the positive and alleviate the negative. Finally, creating a sense of community can be a strong bonding agent. Let the town or region in which you operate
know that your customers are more than just sources of income. There are many ways to show that you truly care about the communities in which you operate: sponsor local youth sports teams, host a charity vehicle wash day, contribute to local fundraisers, participate in job fairs, etc. People are programmed to support businesses that have the same commitment to local causes that they do. You can also embrace the local business community by joining the Chamber of Commerce or other business-centric organizations. Successful businesses do not operate in a selfcontained bubble. Talk to other businesspeople in the area about their successes and failures. Pick their brains for ideas that have worked and those that weren’t quite as successful. Conclusion The vehicle wash experience begins before the site is entered by the driver, and even well before the first shovelful of dirt is turned during construction. But when the equipment is in place and the door is unlocked, it is an engaging, memorable and, most importantly, positive on-site experience that will keep loyal customers coming back and create new ones, with studies showing that 63% of customers who have a bad experience with a brand will stop buying it. Therefore, it is vitally important that every avenue be explored in the search for ways to attract customers to the wash. This means not just deploying all of the latest bells and whistles, but appealing to all five basic senses – and then going beyond that to create a wash experience that checks all of the boxes that are pivotal in building a strong, reliable and ultra-loyal customer base. -Mark Tentis, Vice President of Global Sales for OPW Vehicle Wash Solutions

ORGANIZING A CARWASH FUNDRAISER CONSERVATION As a business that touches so many lives, carwash
companies have the opportunity to celebrate their success and give back to their local communities with fundraising events. Many charities and nonprofit organizations use carwashes to raise money for local causes, and you’re perfectly positioned to partner with them. However, it’s also a great idea for your business to spearhead its own fundraiser. Here are five steps you can take to brainstorm and put on a successful fundraising event at your carwash. Choose a Cause The first step toward organizing your fundraiser is to find a cause you want your business to support. The options are limitless — you could donate to an environmental organization, send funds to a center that helps refugees, give to a local homeless shelter or raise money for a substance abuse rehabilitation center, as examples. The best charity or cause to focus on depends on your business’ unique values, employees and location. For a consistent marketing message, choose a charity that aligns with one of your core values and makes sense with your brand. For example, a carwash in Kentucky that uses a horse logo could fundraise for a charity that rehabilitates former racehorses. In order to get your employees involved, pick a range of options and then choose the winning cause by a vote. Choosing a local cause is usually best because it connects with community members, and you’ll raise more over the duration of the fundraiser. Some carwashes offer free services in response to a sudden need, such as the passing away of a valued citizen or family member. Ask yourself what problems you see or hear about in your community and then find a charity working to meet that need locally. After you’ve committed to a cause, you can find ideal partners for your event. Look for Partners You don’t have to have partners to hold a successful carwash fundraiser. For example, some carwashes hold fundraising events where they wash cars for free in exchange for a charitable donation. Others may donate 100% of the carwashing proceeds to a charity or a local family in need. You can spice up your event without a partner by selling car-friendly snacks as part of the fundraiser. Consider your demographic and offer beef jerky, lollipops and chocolate bars, depending on your customer base. Another option is to set up an ice cream sundae station for customers to patronize while their cars are being washed. However, working with a partner is a great way to bring in more donors and reach a high fundraising goal. Reach out to local businesses that serve a similar customer base and see if they would be willing to coordinate with you to raise
money for your cause. For example, the auto refinancing company RefiJet partnered with a nonprofit called Protect Our Town to donate soup to needy families. Another example is partnering with a local salon for a fundraising event where people can get two chores done at once — washing the car and getting a haircut. You could also host a one-time farmer’s market in your parking lot so patrons can wash their cars and grocery shop at the same time. Market Your Event Although some donors will come to your event through word of mouth, the best way to ensure a good turnout is by implementing a solid marketing plan. As soon as you know the basics about your event, you should start posting about it on your social media accounts. A good time frame for this is at least four weeks out from your event. As you get closer to the big day, you should post more frequently so customers remember it’s happening soon and can make concrete plans to come. Of course, it’s important not to annoy customers with too many notifications and announcements. In addition to posting on social media, you can also send emails to customers who are part of your loyalty program or on a membership plan. Emails are incredibly effective because they’re professional, don’t get lost like paper flyers and can be tailored for individual customers. You should also take out advertisements in local newspapers. However, before you invest too much in advertising, think about your customer base and strategically post your content on platforms they regularly check. For example, older customers might read the paper and use Facebook, while younger customers prefer platforms like Instagram and TikTok. before the day of your event. The success of your event partially depends on the weather, since fewer people are likely to come out if it rains or the temperature drops drastically. Make sure you have a backup date in case the weather decides to surprise you. To ensure you have everything you need, think through each element of your fundraiser. Do you have enough supplies to cover washing a higher number of cars than usual? How many employees will be helping out? Do you have snacks and drinks to carry your employees through the day? What about sunscreen? If you’re partnering with another organization, they’ll bring everything they need to complete their part in the fundraiser. However, you may want to buy snacks for them as well or set up a tent to create some shade in your parking lot. Other supplies you might need include donation buckets and any special decorations or costumes. Good signage is also essential for a successful event. Ideally, your carwash is located by a main road where it’s visible to many potential donors. If your business is more out of the way, you’ll want to post signs that help people find you on the day of the event. Bright colors, bold fonts and simple messaging are most effective. Make it Fun Although planning a fundraiser is a lot of work, your event should also be a lot of fun. The more fun you have with it, the more excited your employees will be and the more people will want to come. Adding food, decorations and games can take your fundraiser to a whole new level. If the majority of your customers have kids, rent a bounce
house or create a gigantic hopscotch on the pavement for families to play in while their cars are cleaned. You can also offer free candy or partner with kid-friendly businesses, like an ice cream store or toy shop. An older demographic may enjoy a vintage car show. Contact as many local people with vintage cars as you can and have them park their vehicles in your lot for display during the event. Choosing a theme like “vintage” can make your fundraiser feel more cohesive, give you direction for choosing partner organizations and attract more donors. You could also incorporate a contest to get donors excited about your event. For example, you could hold a race to emphasize how quickly your business washes cars. You could also organize gift card prizes for the winners to bring them back to your carwash later. Impact your Community Holding a fundraising event is a fantastic way to make a difference in your local community while forging a stronger relationship with your customers. It will also help your employees bond and feel good about where they go to work each day. Use these five steps to hold a fundraising event at your carwash that’s wildly successful and brings value to your community. Although planning a fundraiser takes time and thought, it’s well worth the effort to connect with your local area and demonstrate your core values with meaningful action. -Oscar Collins, founder and editor-in-chief of Modded, reprinted from Professional Car Washing & Detailing Magazine

Apple’s privacy changes will push marketers to focus on firsthand data Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, says “Apple’s changes encourage more businesses to conduct commerce on our platforms, by making it harder for them to basically use their data in order to find the customers that would want to use their products outside of our platform.” While privacy is a primary concern for many individuals, many people can give their data to marketers as long as they find value in your offers and can trust you. With Apple’s privacy changes, marketers need to focus on establishing trust and long-term relationships with customers in 2022. For example, they could use email marketing, highquality content and SEO to gain organic traffic. By understanding your customer’s journey and creating targeted content, you can reach your audience in all of your funnel steps. To win this race, you’ll need to use your channels and leverage first-party data in this era of privacy first. Regulations prohibiting retargeting Agency rulemaking, proposed legislation and the promise of web decentralization could lead to noteworthy changes in the working of digital advertisement in 2022 and beyond. On January 18, 2022, Senator Cory Booker, Representative Jan Schakowsky and Representative Anna Eshoo introduced the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act. The legislation would ban advertisement platforms such as Google Ads and Facebook from targeting people based on behavioral data and some forms of personal information.
How you can stay ahead of the competition If you’re an entrepreneur or business leader looking to stand out from the competition, you need to establish a personalized program to help you achieve your goals. You want to anticipate these possible changes and incorporate them into your strategies. You should also check what other entrepreneurs and business leaders are doing and learn from them. Here are a few tips you can implement to stay relevant and ahead of your competitors: • Expand your offer • Focus on new markets • Maintain your existing customers • Update your image • Enhance your marketing • Understand your customers • Understand the competition • Jump on the bandwagon If you’re an entrepreneur, you probably understand how investing in tech for your business can be critical. These are some of the tech trends and changes you should expect moving forward. If you’re committed to your entrepreneurial endeavors, you want to stay ahead of competitors by integrating the latest tech trends in your business. It’s one of the best ways you can compete with large and established corporations. Embracing them can determine your business’s success in 2022 and beyond. - Steve Taplin, MSN

Consider adding a note to your credit report if you lost
your job because of the coronavirus pandemic and have been unable to keep up with your bills. The note - called a “consumer statement”- explains missed or late payments to potential lenders and may help offset negative information if you apply for a loan or credit card. Be sure to remove the note when your financial situation improves and you are again able to meet all your payment obligations.
Energy vampires wasting your money? Some appliances
continue to use electricity even when turned off if they’re plugged into electrical outlets. Worst offenders: Phone chargers that are not in use... computers left in “sleep” or “hibernate” mode...televisions a red power light means the TV is pulling electricity...game consoles left on so you can pick up where you left off (even turned off they use power for software updates)... printers left in standby mode (wireless ones use even more energy to maintain an active Wi-Fi signal). What to do: When it is practical, unplug devices... use outlet timers to turn off devices... plug multiple devices into a single surge protector power strip so it’s easier to turn them all off with one switch.
Don’t repair your apple device on your own, Warns
technology writer Mike Wuerthele. Apple announced that it soon will allow consumers to repair their own devices and buy official replacement parts and tools directly from the company. But: Repairing computing devices requires technical skill. The slightest error can turn your phone’s “simple” screen or battery repair into a recipe for an expensive paperweight. The repair program is mostly a PR exercise - Apple is embracing consumers’ right-to-repair before legislators pass a law requiring it.
Good news about flexible spending accounts, we hear from benefits expert Lisa Myers. Pretax contributions to employee FSAs that are used to pay medical costs and dependent-care expenses typically get forfeited if not used before year-end. Good news: Because the pandemic has caused so many people to skip doctor’s appointments and delay treatments and children have been home due to childcare-center closures, the federal government is allowing employers to extend deadlines or let workers carry over more funds into this year. Check with your employer.
