FROM THE SCWA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SCWA just concluded the SCWA Charlotte Car Wash Tour. It was a great time visiting outstanding and very successful car wash locations in Charlotte! SCWA is very thankful to Steve Anderson; Bryan Watts and Carl Howard who invited us to visit their locations and also to all the great companies who sponsored the event and are acknowledged on another page in this issue of ADVANTAGE. The SCWA Tour certainly brought out the best in the car wash industry in many ways. Don’t miss all the great pictures of the tour in this edition of the ADVANTAGE.
Watching all the great operators and vendors networking together during the Tour is a demonstration of what makes our industry unique and truly wonderful.
Connected cameras track a vehicle from the pay station to the tunnel, ensuring that the equipment will provide the purchased services to the correct vehicle, Davy explains. Controllers also provide safety for the consumer by controlling the conveyor and other equipment, automatically pausing the tunnel when there is a problem. This tight control can allow for customers to receive a custom “light show” in the tunnel as well, Davy states. This feature can create a unique experience for each customer based on what was selected and purchased. Modern controllers can even activate unique signage or special lighting for any visiting unlimited wash club members.
EFFICIENT PROFITABILITY
The SCWA Tour saw many people enjoying being together; smiling; sharing; excited about being a part of the great car wash industry and ready to take back good ideas to their operations; bottom line they were all happy about the experience of being and learning together.
Many people confuse success with wealth or power - they assume that a person’s true worth can be determined by the cost of a watch, a car, a house, or money. But what was on display in Charlotte and remembering many other SCWA events – we see true success is much more and maybe is not defined in just one way. Success has many faces.
Another advantage controllers enable is to-the-inch application of chemicals. This precise application means operators can effectively control their washes’ chemical costs. When set up correctly, equipment only sprays the vehicle, not the gap between vehicles, Davy notes. This to-the-inch application continues through the entire tunnel and applies to such services as ceramic coatings, wax applications and other necessary chemistry. This universal control not only saves on chemistry costs, but it also provides customers a better wash experience.
We see success is synonymous with a person’s character rather than affluence. It’s when you find satisfaction and are excited with what you’re doing; when you don’t dread facing each new day that you are truly successful. When you see that you make a difference in other people’s life or a business; when you feel true gratitude, not only from others, but from your inner-self; when you walk with the selfassured attitude, that’s when you are a real winner.
Energy efficiency can be another advantage. “Your tunnel controller also helps you save electricity by driving each piece of machinery in the tunnel, activating your vehicle frequency-driven devices and controlling signage and lighting around your facility,” Davy continues. “Additionally, your tunnel controller can help conserve energy by leaving your dryers on when multiple cars are in the tunnel, avoiding costly start-ups of the dryer system. Without wasting chemical or electricity, you are better able to control your per-car costs and make each service more profitable.”
Bath points to efficient look-ahead features in a carwash tunnel that can include the controller keeping the blowers running for the following vehicle. Again, this step saves energy and creates cost savings. “There are many features that can help operators save power, water, etc. When you understand all these modern-day features, your process will benefit as well as your cost savings,” Bath says.
This is very true in organizations also. High performance associations are not defined just by the number of members or the amount of dollars in the bank. While this is important, I think truly successful organizations and associations are defined by the relevance of the programs; the excitement of the events; the happiness everyone shares in being together; the relationships and life-long relationships built. This is when you know “that association has exceeded its mission and purpose”. This is the goal of each SCWA event.
If you are a member of SCWA – thank you! If not we encourage you to become a part of the SCWA family and enjoy the great network and friends and sharing you will find here.
With the ramped-up speeds and maximum loading efficiency needed, it is easy to see the importance of proper control in the world of express tunnel washing. Integrated and cooperative monitoring systems have proven to be a profit protector for many bustling car care operations. How do modern controllers enable these monitoring systems to prevent both loading issues and damage complaints in carwash tunnels?
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Speaking about SCWA events – the SCWA Wade Welch Memorial Golf Classic is right around the corner, October 15. Be sure to register and join us in San Antonio at the very popular J.W. Marriott. It will be a great time to be with friends and enjoy the great TPC professional golf course.
Here, camera systems can provide on-site tracking and help avoid delays caused by a loader, which prevents slowed productivity and missed rollers. Inside the tunnel, cameras can even stop the conveyor when the vehicle is not where it is supposed to be, Davy states. Stopping the tunnel can prevent costly accidents and the downtime they create. These anti-collision systems allow a carwash to run vehicles closer together, further increasing valuable throughput and revenue on busy days.
Of course the FIRST BIG Car Wash EXPO in 2025 is hosted by SCWA, February 26-28, 2025 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The EXPO floor will be the largest ever for SCWA and include all the top car wash, lube and detail companies. Attendee Registration will open soon – so mark your calendars and join us. The room blocks for the SCWA Convention hotels are open on our website – www. swcarwash.org. Be sure to reserve the rooms of your choice today before all the rooms are gone.
Speaking of success - The theme of the 2025 SCWA Convention & EXPO is very appropriate - Great Car Washes Don’t Just Happen!
Vehicle proximity devices, such as sonar, help identify features on vehicles so a wash can provide a better clean, Davy notes. For example, these devices can detect the windshield location, allowing for special windshield wash services or side mirror rinses. It is also possible to identify truck beds, allowing a wash to automatically turn off devices. This can prevent too much soap from being dumped into the truck bed or turn off blowers so they will not blow debris out of the bed onto other vehicles.
T NEW CHANGES TO OVERTIME EXEMPTION STATUS
he Department of Labor has increased the salary threshold required for an employee to meet an exemption status. This change could mean that your employee is now or will soon be entitled to overtime.
Changes to Exemption Status.
If an employee is classified as “exempt” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”), it is likely that the employee is not entitled to overtime pay. For the most part, an employee’s classification as “exempt” or “non-exempt” depends on three factors:
1. Whether the employee is paid a salary;
2. Whether the salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount; and
3. Whether the employee’s job duties meet the requirements for one the exemption categories.
Earlier this year, the Department of Labor (“DOL”) increased the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees. The
rule is taking effect in two phases, with the first increase going into effect as of July 1, 2024 and the second increase on January 1, 2025.
Beginning July 1, 2024, the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees increased from $684 per week ($35,568 per year) to $844 per week ($43,888 per year). This threshold increase means that as of July 1 of this year, most salaried workers who earn less than $43,888 per year are eligible for overtime pay. The threshold for employees classified as “highly compensated” increased from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year.
The second increase, taking effect on January 1, 2025, raises

the minimum salary threshold to $1,128 per week ($58,656 per year). The second phase of the rule also raises the salary threshold for “highly compensated” exempt employees to $151,164 per year.
Is Your Employee Still Exempt?
Employers should not rely on an employee’s job title as job titles do not determine exempt status. Rather, employers should carefully analyze whether an employee meets an exemption before they categorize an employee as exempt under the FLSA. For an FLSA exemption to apply, an employee’s specific job duties and salary must meet all the requirements of the DOL’s regulations.
The most common exemption categories under the FLSA are Executive, Administrative, and Professional. To be eligible for exempt status under any of these categories, an employee must be earning a salary of at least $844 per week. In addition, the employee must meet specific job duties with respect to the applicable exempt category. These job duties vary depending on the type of exemption.
For example, to meet the Executive exemption under the FLSA, an employee must meet the $844 salary threshold in addition to the following job requirements:
• The employee’s primary duty must be managing the enterprise, or managing a customarily recognized department or subdivision of the enterprise;
• The employee must customarily and regularly direct the work of at least two or more other full-time employees or their equivalent; and
• The employee must have the authority to hire or fire other employees, or the employee’s suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion or any other change of status of other employees must be given particular weight.
Impact of Salary Threshold Increase
Before 1975, the threshold was updated every 5 to 9 years, however over the years these gaps got larger and longer. The last salary threshold increase was determined in 2019 to a threshold set in 2004. Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will now be updated every three years so that they better reflect the changes in worker salaries. This frequency will help employers to adapt more easily to threshold increases because employers will know when to expect salary updates and how they will be calculated.
The DOL estimates that the rule will affect four million workers by 2025. Multiple lawsuits have been filed to stop the changes from going into effect, including one from the state of Texas. On June 28, 2024, a federal court in Texas blocked the DOL from enforcing the rule against the state of Texas as an employer, but the rule continues to be in effect for private and other U.S. government employers.

UNDERSTANDING GARAGEKEEPERS COVERAGE
ne of the most prevalent claims – both in the car wash space and overall auto service industry – are losses under “Garagekeepers Liability” – commonly referred to as “GKLL.” By definition: Garagekeepers Liability covers for damage to a customer vehicle while in the care, custody, and control of your business.
The are two types of Garagekeepers coverage – Legal Liability and Direct Primary. Legal Liability, while typically less expensive, only covers for damage to a customer’s vehicle that you are legally obligated to repair due to negligence – such as an employee damaging a vehicle while detailing or servicing it. For automatic and express car washes this could pertain to a piece of car wash equipment falling and damaging a customer vehicle in the tunnel.
Direct Primary, on the other hand, covers a customer’s vehicle regardless of who is at fault. A customer could be negligent and unfold their side view mirrors in the car wash or inadvertently take their car out of neutral while on the track. Both examples could cause damage to the customer vehicle, and not necessarily due to any carelessness of the business. Direct Primary, while it costs more than Legal Liability, can help ensure a better customer experience. The customer won’t need to file damages on their own personal auto insurance, and less likely to leave negative reviews and/or cancel their services.
Like most damage related claims, Garagekeepers does have a deductible. Depending on the specifics of your business (GKLL loss history, or a location susceptible to high wind/ hail exposures) there is a per customer vehicle and per event deductible (i.e. one customer’s vehicle is damaged vs. multiple cars damaged all at once). It’s important to review the deductibles and coverage limits as it relates to your business risk - such as number of vehicles serviced each day, average value of vehicles, etc. To effort limiting the number of GKLL claims an insured might elect for a high GKLL deductible and pay for the smaller events out-ofpocket. Please remember that insurance carriers consider both loss severity and loss frequency when reviewing / renewing accounts. A car wash that has a dozen small GKLL in a year vs. one larger event is going to be treated
differently by underwriting. What can I do to limit my Garagekeepers Exposure?
As most owner / operators probably already do - it’s imperative to take steps that limit your exposure for GKLL related claims. Have signage with clearly defined actions the customer needs to take (ex: put car in neutral, hands of wheel, fold in mirrors) and attendants to verify these are complied with before entering the tunnel. Attendants should also note preexisting damage of a vehicle. A big one lately is to have the attendants ensure any items are removed from a truck bed before entering a tunnel. These miscellaneous items can get caught in the car wash equipment and cause serious damage. Also, security cameras, both inside and outside the tunnel, help corroborate against alleged events from a customer.
For services where an employee may physically move a customer vehicle – validate employee Motor Vehicle Records and ensure a property safety / training program in place.
Note: with the continued hardening of the insurance market, many car wash carriers are requiring these parameters be in place to offer GKLL coverage.
Closing Thoughts:
In addition to carriers pushing higher deductibles on GKLL, we’re also seeing more limitations. Depending on the carrier, if multiple operations are onsite (ex: quick lube and car wash) they might classify GKLL losses only as they pertain to damage when an employee is driving the vehicle. There’s nothing worse than being advised on the backend the coverage you thought you had doesn’t apply to all situations.
As always – please frequently consult with your broker to ensure you have the right coverage.

CULTURE AND VALUES HELP DRIVE BUSINESS
ulture is the heartbeat of any organization – the invisible thread that ties everyone together, shaping not just what we do, but how we do it. And at the core of every vibrant culture lies a set of values that guides our actions, influences our decisions, and defines our identity both within the company and outside it.
Core values aren’t just words on a wall or in a handbook; they are the principles that guide an organization’s behaviors and decision-making processes. Values often shape the identity of an organization both internally in terms of culture, and externally by way of brand identity. A strong set of values that align with both strategy and individual employee values can bring coherence and unity to every level of the organization.
But what happens when those values are out of sync? When the values lived and breathed by the leadership don’t match the ethical compass of the workforce? Simply put, you get
PERSPECTIVE
disharmony, disengagement, and ultimately a toxic culture that drains creativity and stifles performance. High staff turnover, lack of innovation and a general sense of malaise can quickly set in. In such cases, it might be time to hit the reset button and redefine the core values to turn things around.
The current VUCA landscape (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) in which businesses must operate, means they must navigate rapid technological advances, shifting customer expectations, and a heightened emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity.
In such a fast-moving environment, a company’s organizational strategy is bound to evolve. And when that happens, the core values should evolve too. After all, an organization’s values need to be in sync with its strategy to keep the company moving forward in the right direction.
So, how best to create or redefine these organizational values? Begin with your strategy – what are you aiming to achieve? Then, think about the values and behaviors that will get you there. To help shape your thinking, you should engage with a wide selection of voices to gather information. Run workshops, surveys, and collaborative exercises with your team to discover the values that are important to them, and that they believe are important to your customers or service users. You should also talk to your customers and other external stakeholders. Find out exactly what they expect when they interact with your organization.
A strong set of values that align with both strategy and individual employee values can bring coherence and unity to every level of the organization.
Having considered all of this and created a set of values (remember KISS – Keep it Short and Simple), it will be important to retest them with your stakeholders to ensure they resonate, create alignment, buy-in and spark excitement.
At this point many organizations “declare victory”; the
values appear on a plaque above the door, and nothing really changes. But values only make a real impact when they’re woven into the DNA of the organization. This is where leadership comes in. Real change comes from the top.
Think about running “values workshops” led by the senior leadership team. In these sessions, groups of employees should tackle real business scenarios and be encouraged to come up with solutions guided by the new values.
It’s crucial that your leadership team sets the example, integrating these values into their day-to-day language and decision-making processes. Imagine the impact when leaders openly discuss how the values have influenced their decisions – this brings the values to life in a tangible way.
Finally, don’t forget to celebrate those who embody your values. Recognising and rewarding employees who live out your values in an employee recognition scheme can be a powerful way to reinforce their importance and keep them front and center.
The link between an organization’s culture and its core values cannot be understated.

SAFETY AWARENESS FOR SLIPS
TRIPS AND FALLS
“Speaking from the standpoint of our systems only, if completely biodegradable chemicals are always used and routine maintenance followed, quarterly nutrients need to be added to the system, and an annual filter change is required,” Gibney says.
If you have multiple checking or savings accounts, consider consolidating to one of each, preferably at the same bank-more accounts mean higher odds of overdrafts. Especially troublesome are accounts with automated withdrawals or payments-easily overdrawn if no one is paying close attention. If there are lots of CDs, savings accounts and/ or moneymarket accounts at different institutions, some could be easily overlooked.
I
FINAL RESULTS
t only takes a moment, but a slip, trip, or fall at your business could have devastating and long-lasting consequences. Keeping your employees and clients safe isn’t just common sense, it’s a solid risk management practice. Did you know:
• Falls that stem from slipping and tripping are the second-most common cause of workplace injuries.
If maintained correctly, the final results provided by closed-loop carwashing should rival conventional wash quality, the NWI team states. The path to achieve this quality is not without some increased maintenance requirements and equipment costs. But, these factors should be weighed against the savings of reduced water and sewer costs to determine the feasibility and profitability of closed-loop operation.
• 20-30% of workplace falls lead to injuries like deep bruising, broken bones, or concussions.
• 15% of all workplace deaths are the result of slips, trips, and falls.
Ideally, a closed-loop wash is using completely biodegradable chemicals, operating a true restoration system that removes chemicals from the water and following the manufacturer’s required maintenance, Gibney concludes. If so, customers will not be able to tell any difference in wash quality compared to the use of fresh water.
Recognize the Hazards
There are plenty of ways that a slip, trip, or fall could occur at your business. Survey your workplace regularly — inside, outside, and around the operations for hazards. Use a checklist and follow up with frequent training and reminders for employees.

Conduct a Job Hazard Analysis
FINANCIAL
Prepare Your Finances for an Emergency Handoff
Certain work may require a job hazard analysis to determine potential risks before they occur, including a safety evaluation of the employees who will be completing certain tasks, the tasks themselves, tools involved, and the work environment. This can help to develop standard operating procedures moving forward.
Could someone step in and successfully manage your financial affairs if you are unable to do so yourself? Of course, you could execute a "financial power of attorney'' designating someone as a "financial agent" to act on your behalf in financial matters if you're incapacitated. But just drafting that document with an attorney, which you should do, doesn't guarantee that this relative, friend or adviser will know what to do. The issue isn't so much whether he/ she lacks financial savvy-it's that figuring out someone else's finances on the fly is a massive challenge.
is especially on many people's minds now because of the coronavirus pandemic, but an incapacitating emergency could come up at any time. Here's how to prepare finances for an emergency handoff…
SIMPLIFY IN ADVANCE
credit card payments are among the most common missteps when someone takes over your finances. The more cards you use, the greater the odds that there will be a problem. Cut back to only two, if possible.
Stick with paper statements. It's perfectly fine for you to access your accounts online, but it's easy for someone else to overlook or be shut out of your online only accounts, which may be difficult to access. Bills and statements that arrive in the mail provide a wonderful fail-safe. That's true even if the financial agent doesn't live near you-your mail can be forwarded to that person by the post office or a trusted neighbor.
Take Action
Safe work practices, including the ones listed above, can include, but are not limited to:
• Providing adequate work-rest periods so employees stay alert and refreshed
DRAFT A ROAD MAP
• Having cleaning supplies on hand and cleaning spills immediately
• Maintaining well-lit facilities
Create a concise guide to your finances. Having all of your financial information in one place will save your designated agent a lot of time and greatly reduce the odds that something will be missed. Handwrite this list, or type and print it. But don't save it on your computer or send it via e-mail-that would increase the risk that this sensitive info could be stolen. Among the details to include...
• Following building codes
• Hanging up warning signs as needed
• Using correct tools, ladders, and protective gear for designated jobs
• Keeping walkways, entrances, and exits free of obstructions
Income sources. Note how each of your income streams arrives-pensions and Social Security payments often are direct-deposited into bank accounts, for example. If you

INDUSTRY UPDATES
washes depend on functional speed and accuracy, and these important factors are generated by the best integrated controller and management systems.
RB Hires New VP of Product Management
This continued development has created across-theboard change in the car care industry. Speed is king, and wash cycle speeds have surged as daily vehicle counts have climbed. But, this process of acceleration also ushered in the expectation of new services and improved wash results. Now, both tight timing and effective operation have become important for every wash cycle performed.
DRB has appointed April Bertram as its new vice president of product management. This strategic move underscores DRB’s dedication to innovation and helping customers maximize the performance of their car wash investments.
As VP, Bertram will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of DRB’s product portfolio throughout the entire product lifecycle. She will ensure DRB’s product vision, strategies, and roadmaps are deeply rooted in customer research and address critical customer needs.
“I am honored to join DRB and contribute to its legacy as the leader of vehicle care technology,” Bertram said. “I look forward to working with the talented team at DRB to develop and deliver products that not only meet but exceed our customers’ expectations.”
To maintain pace in this hyper-competitive market, every owner must stay current on the capabilities of today’s carwash control systems. Often called the “brain” of the modern carwash, these carwash controllers connect the different phases of automated operation. Wash equipment, business systems, HR functions and more communicate and share information. Only by learning about this technology and implementing industry best practices can a carwash owner hope to ensure dependable and profitable operation.
KEEP IT MOVING
The company also announced that Jason Wray has been appointed director of business development, and Shelly Eddy has been named director of strategic accounts.

Rakes will leverage his diverse, multi-site experience to execute strategic initiatives to provide premier guest experiences, increase operational efficiency, and seamlessly open new stores.
The list of ways a controller keeps a carwash moving is impressive. Model controllers across the industry have very efficient abilities that allow bumper-to-bumper washing while providing precise results. Bath points out that new controllers do this by allowing different types of automation, like raising the roller, to maintain a regular flow of vehicles.
The hiring strengthens Flagstop’s leadership team, supporting sustained growth as the company plans to reach more than 25 units by 2025.
Today, car-per-hour conveyor speeds currently vary in the industry — speeds of 150 cars per hour up to even 220 cars per hour are common across the express world, Bath reveals. The large tunnel properties where operators have 20-plus vacuum spaces have really pushed up speeds and profits across the board.
“We are thrilled to welcome Spencer to Flagstop,” said Jamie Nester, CEO of Flagstop. “His invaluable experience, especially within the fuel industry, is closely aligned with our commitment to our guests, and his depth of knowledge working with consumer- facing companies and management teams will be a key asset for our growing team.”
Rakes joins the team from Pilot, one of the largest operators of fuel and travel centers in North America, where he served as VP of operations and spearheaded the growth and performance of more than 800 locations throughout the country.
Overall, carwash tunnel controllers help operators dial in their profits and provide a clean, dry and shiny vehicle, according to Todd Davy, senior vice president of sales for DRB Systems. Other advances that modern technology allows are integration of a controller and a point-of-sale (POS) system. To this end, the controller communicates with the POS system to make sure every customer receives the wash services for which he or she paid.
Time-wasting and costly rewashes can become a problem if a vehicle receives the wrong services. Modern controllers work with other systems to address this issue.
Unmatched Performance.

ive reasons not to use a safe-deposit box. Contents are not covered by FDIC insurance - that covers only checking and savings deposits, not goods stored in safe-deposit boxes. No damage or theft insurance - even if the bank burns to the ground, you’re on your own unless you insured your items independently. You have access only when the bank is open - if you need your items at other times, you’ll have to wait. They’re a hassle for your estate - your heirs and even your executor might have to jump through legal hoops to open the box. You will continually pay rent - depending on the size of the box, you might pay $15 to $150...year after year after year. Better: Purchase a high-quality home safe, and insure the items that you keep in it.

Any payments made annually or semiannually deserve special attention—the less often a recurring bill is paid, the greater the odds that your financial agent will overlook it when reviewing your finances. The is common with longterm-care insurance, home/auto insurance and property taxes. Highlight the dates these are due, and add a warning that this date is important. Example: A woman was in a rehab facility when her long-term-care policy's bill arrived. The deadline passed before she or her loved ones realized anything was amiss. The insurer fused to reinstate the policy.
