INDUSTRY UPDATES BRIEFS Family legacy of service marches on in Idaho parade A striking display of generational valor will be present at this year’s Idaho Veterans Parade as Bill Martin, owner of Metro Express Car Wash, will be walking alongside his grandchildren and his 92-year-old brother, John Martin, the company announced in a press release. This family is a living tribute to service and sacrifice, with a military history that spans from the Korean War to the Vietnam War and beyond. Both Bill and John Martin have served the nation with valor and distinction. John, at the age of 18, served as a Marine during the Korean War, while Bill was a member of the prestigious U.S. Army Green Berets during the Vietnam War. They continue to embody the legacy of honor and service for their family. The Martin family lineage of service doesn’t end there. Their family also pays tribute to Bill’s son, Andrew, who served in the Marine Corps, as well as their late brother Eddie Martin, who had an illustrious career in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam. Also remembered are their late brothers-in-law, Dennis
Doty, a retiree from the U.S. Air Force who served in Vietnam, and Gerry Doty, who made the ultimate sacrifice serving in the U.S. Marines on the beaches of Korea. “Military service is part of the fabric of our family,” Bill Martin says. “It’s our responsibility and honor to give back to fellow veterans and active-duty military. Every Veterans Day, we offer free carwashes at all Metro Express locations as a gesture of our deep gratitude.” In addition to the annual complimentary carwashes offered to all veterans on Nov. 11, Metro Express Car Wash also extends yearround discounts on wash services to all veterans. During the parade, the Martin family distributed free carwash tickets.

Autobell earns Top Workplaces Award for second consecutive year
Take 5 Donates $1 Million to Children’s Medical Center
For the second consecutive year, Autobell Car Wash earned a Top Workplaces award from North Carolina’s Charlotte Observer, the company announced in a press release.
Take 5 Oil Change and Take 5 Car Wash has donated $1 million to support the expansion of the Children’s Medical Center in Plano, TX.
The Top Workplaces 2023 award is based solely on confidential employee feedback gathered through a thirdparty survey, recognizing companies that foster a peoplecentered culture that gives employees a voice. In conjunction with this year’s award, Autobell also earned a special distinction for Appreciation, which highlights companies that understand and prioritize the self-sustaining performance and positivity boost that results from genuine employee appreciation. Special award recipients are chosen based on exceptionally high employee responses to specific survey statements. Anonymous survey feedback from Autobell team members included:
• Autobell teaches us more than just how to make money. • I appreciate the flexibility of my work schedule at this job. • I love working here with all the flexibility they provide for us.
• Thanks for working with me and my school schedule! All my managers are great. Keep it up.
“We’re thrilled that our team members love working at Autobell,” said Katie Sens, Autobell director of human resources. “We value them, and we show it by offering flexible work schedules, opportunities for growth and development, generous benefits, and educational assistance through scholarships. Plus, Autobell provides training and coaching to help them succeed on the job and in other areas of their lives.” Conducted by Energage LLC, the research-backed Top Workplaces employee engagement survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers critical to the success of any organization. Benny’s Joins Forces with LSU Athletics as Proud Partner Benny’s Car Wash announced in a press release its partnership with Louisiana State University Athletics. “Children’s Health is grateful to Take 5 for their generous gift to help expand Children’s Medical Center Plano,” said Brent Christopher, president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation. “As their business grows across North Texas, Take 5 exemplifies their mission of supporting the needs of the communities where they live and work, helping Children’s Health meet the needs of our pediatric population, which is growing rapidly. The Take 5 donation will be recognized in one of the new patient family and visitor waiting areas on the Plano campus, providing a welcoming, comfortable space to decompress and rest from what can sometimes be stressful situations. With the support of Take 5, we’re continuing to make life better for children now and for generations to come.” Located on each floor as you exit the elevators, the family and visitor waiting areas are inviting spaces for families to meet with visitors outside of children’s rooms. These are particularly essential for families with children who are in isolation and cannot receive visitors in their rooms. Take 5 Oil Change and Take 5 Car Wash are part of Driven Brands, North America’s largest automotive services company. Through its charitable arm, the Driven Brands Charitable Foundation, the company has supported children’s hospitals nationwide for almost 20 years, donating more than $4 million since its fundraising initiative began.

creating a luxury brand with unbeatable, top-tier service. The secret to his success? A great service and management team. “Our management team is second to none,” Shepard says. While some businesses may only express concern over profits and losses, Shepard believes in attention to quality service to ensure a positive experience for the customer when visiting the carwash. “Carnation is different because we are ‘service first’ as an organization,” he says. If the customer comes in with a child or pet, Shepard assures his team will please by offering a lollipop and/or pet treat. And, if they’re waiting on a detail or other spa service, customers can help themselves to free donuts, Starbucks coffee and bottled water. They can sit back and relax in airconditioned lounges, while the Carnation team works on achieving a squeaky clean, full sweep of their car. As any carwash can have the right equipment, tools, materials and locations, it’s that extra attention to detail that sets businesses apart from the rest. Shepard shows his pride in the attentiveness of Carnation’s service professionals. “We maintain the same operating margins as our national pure express competitors, but we provide a service level they simply cannot compete with,” he boasts. Continuous Expansion As the market continues to rise and fall, there’s no ignoring the unequivocal impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the carwashing industry. However, Shepard says, during the time when the world was just beginning to snap back into place, Carnation Auto Spa’s growth took off. The company grew from one location to its current number of sites — 21 all located in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area — from 2021 to 2022. He also notes that six of Carnation’s current locations are experiencing big changes through capital projects. Currently, the location in Southlake is undergoing a conversion of the layout from full-service to express and will reopen this fall. The company is also adding or updating vacuuming bays on several of its sites. Furthermore, four other sites are undergoing the addition of full-tunnel equipment overhauls. With the continuous success and growth of this company, Shepard recognizes the importance of investing it back into the business, such as through updating and improving the overall experience at every location and expanding the business by acquiring more sites. “Future growth will come from additional site acquisitions and integration into the Carnation Auto Spa brand,” he says. “We see first-hand the value we create as a site integrates onto our platform, and the money invested into a new site generates a positive return day one.” Prioritizing Employees While a company grows, so must its number of employees, and the pandemic made a distinct effect on many people’s professional lives. helps you track trends, cashflow, catch errors in sales tax or inventory. All of this accumulates into a business that can take great care of you and your family. The accountant acts as an accountability partner. The books measure your income tax, sales tax and payroll tax. That is a lot of tax to measure at any given time. When we are forced to consider the repercussion of taxes on many elements of our business — or the people who occupy our payroll — or consider a sizable purchase, we will want the best information available to us. If accounting for your business is neglected, you may find out too late that you do not have sufficient funds or cashflow. This would be an avoidable disaster. Regular consultation with your accountant will keep your feet on the ground and encourage continual growth … depending on the accountant.
owners month after month without any dialogue or questioning. I suggest that you use the skillset you are paying your accountant for. They have honed a skillset for finding answers in numbers. Rely on that expertise. If that is too daunting, once you receive your statements, ask the accountant if there are any changes or trends you should pay attention to. Your accountant should not expect you to know everything about your books but being curious will help. Ask your accountant to help you select just five accounts to review each month. You are welcome to prepare your own list. As a suggestion, income, COGS, payroll, cash balance and outstanding liabilities are good areas to focus on. Try this for three months and see what you learn. Conclusion Businesses are won and lost in the gap between “good books” and “bad books”. They are the difference between expanding, surviving, or closing. If your books aren’t structured in such a way to simply translate the story your business is trying to tell you, you are fighting the battle of growing your business with both hands tied behind your back. If your books aren’t timely and accurate, I can almost guarantee you are paying too much in taxes, supplies, and too little on your accountant. You have a bookkeeper when you need an accountant, or better yet, an advisor.
What is in it for you? What is in it for you is money, continued sustained growth of your business, and confidence in your business decisions are both tangible and intangible benefits to regular accounting and check-ins with your accountant. Bonus round: Examining your books regularly helps overcome inherent biases. Many business owners believe their business is operating at a margin of profit of X, or believe they know how much debt they have. When the owner is confronted with the truth multiple times, the bias begins to fade.
From a business owner perspective, clean books are your ticker to easier tax filings, better controls and more understanding. On a regular basis, you should be asking for details from your accountant. If the accountant is not giving you suitable answers and insight into your query, it may be time to ask to change the arrangement with your accountant or change accountants. Remember that it is common for businesses to spend approximately 3% to 4% of their income on accounting. This stems from the volume and nature of deposits and expenses and slides up as revenue increases. You will want an accountant that is capable of offering education, an opinion, a counter opinion and lastly an accountant that will give you actionable information. All of this stems from the appropriate starting point of having well maintained accounting books.
Review the books each month; look for differences. Can you explain them? If not, review the record and find answers or at least ask questions.
If you can’t answer the questions at the beginning of the article, it might be time to look for an advisor instead of simply a bookkeeper.
Often, accountants will prepare statements for business
