The Gleason Physical Education Center is the home of both the Warrior and Lady Warrior basketball teams. Built in 1971, it houses a 2,500 seat gymnasium, a swimming pool, the Edwards Weight Room and physical education classrooms and offices.
On Nov. 2, 2013, the court was dedicated and named after SC and Kansas Sports Hall of Famer and former women’s basketball coach, Lonnie Kruse. The Gleason Center atmosphere has been upgraded with the addition of new scoreboards which were made possible through the support of First Bank and JACAM. A project for new bleachers upstairs in the Gleason Center has also been approved. The project is set to start in November and be completed in December, giving the Gleason Center a new look and feel for fans.
On October 18, 1986, the building was dedicated in honor of long-time Sterling College coach and athletic director Clair L. Gleason. Gleason coached football, baseball, basketball and track during his 33-year tenure at Sterling College.
The Edwards Weight Center is located on the north side of the Gleason Physical Education Building.
The Gleason Center has also been the host site for sub-state basketball contests and the Sterling Invitational, a high school boys basketball tournament.
The center is named in memory of two brothers who were SC athletes in the early days of the college - Edward Edwards and John Edwards. The facility was made possible by a gift from Ed’s son Harold “Gus” Edwards and his wife, Evelyn. Gus played football for SC from 1935 to 1938 and served as team captain in 1937.

Women’s Season Preview “Coming Together” The 2015-2016 was the second season for Head Coach K.C. Bassett of the Sterling College Women’s Basketball program. After a slow start, the Lady Warriors were able to find a rhythm midway through the season to earn big victories over tough KCAC opponents. Wins against #24 Kansas Wesleyan, #25 Friends University, and RV Oklahoma Wesleyan University, kept Sterling in the mix come post-season. The Lady Warriors would eventually fall in the first round of the KCAC Women’s Basketball tournament to Friends University. Finishing the season with a 11-19 (9-11) record, the Lady Warriors lost four seniors to graduation – Kate Brickell, Megan Stagner, Alissa Gasper, and Kristin Waters. Two notable seniors that graduated were Kate Brickell and Megan Stagner. Brickell and Stagner both brought different qualities to the team that contributed to the strong push the Lady Warriors made to end the season. “We lost a great senior class- they will be hard to replace. We have a solid core of returners and a very good group of newcomers who are looking to step into

vacant roles,” said Head Coach K.C. Bassett, “We are all excited to see how everything comes together.” With a strong core of veterans returning, Sterling brings back a group of impact players from the previous season: Unanimous All-KCAC First Team and Honorable Mention All- America selection Hailey Davis and All-KCAC Honorable Mention selection Jordin Greer lead the way. Jessica Princ, Kortney Ricke, and Kennedy Sokoloski round out a solid tandem of Lady Warrior players that bring experience and hard work ethic onto the court and will be heavily relied on this upcoming season. “Those four players stand out as far as returners who are expected to have a major role this year. Hailey, Jordin and Jessica all started for us last year. Kennedy had a solid freshman year and has worked hard over the summer, and Kortney has stepped up as well. This group’s experience will without a doubt help us this season,” said Coach Bassett. Alongside the returners, there are a number of newcomers that have joined the Sterling College Women’s Basketball program that are looking to make an impact right away. Sterling native, Kylah
Women’s Season Preview Comley, a 5’3 freshmen, will be fighting for varsity playing time at the point guard position. Comley sees the floor tremendously well and can also score in a variety of ways. Transfers Kilee Harris (5’10, JR, Barton County CC) and Samantha Mosley (5’10, JR, Milwaukee Area Tech College) are newcomers that add depth to the forward/ post position. 5’10 freshmen, Mayda Stallbaumer, from Centralia High School, will also add depth in the power post position. “Many of the expectations for this season hinge on how well the returners and newcomers come together. I expect practices to be highly competitive- we have quite a few newcomers who will push our players who garnered playing time last year,” said Bassett. “We hope to work hard enough to be able to get better every day- that is our goal.”
playing in an exhibition match against the Fort Hays State University Tigers. Sterling will also travel to West Palm Beach, Florida, to play in the Keiser University Classic in December. “The KCAC has always been a tough, competitive conference,’ said Bassett, “This conference only becomes tougher with the addition of Oklahoma Wesleyan and York. We are going to work hard to represent well. It will be a fun season for sure.” This season, Coach Bassett will be assisted by Chad Comley and Kate Brickell.
Sterling opens the season on October 31st when they host Kansas Christian College. The annual “Warrior Classic” will see the Lady Warriors taking on Johnson & Wales University and College of Saint Mary. Men’s Season Preview “One” The beginning of the 2016-17 basketball season couldn’t come soon enough for the Sterling College Warriors. With a deep group of experienced seniors and some new key players adding energy and athleticism, the Sterling squad is focused on reaching new goals this year. In his eleventh year at Sterling, Coach Dean Jaderston has also been looking forward this season all summer. “It’s great to have such a strong senior class, both on and off the court. They have worked hard for four years, and now it’s their turn. Our theme this year is “ONE”. It’s about being One team, One family, with One goal, to be the best basketball team we can be. In order to accomplish this, we have to have some strong leaders to help pull everyone together, and this class has those type of young men.”
Jaderston, “and without consistency, it’s hard to be confident. We never stopped competing, but we just couldn’t find the big plays when we needed them.”
As the Warriors look forward to the 201617 season, there are two areas of improvement Coach Jaderston believes needs to be addressed to get back to the top The Warriors of the KCAC. First, the Warriors have are looking to regain their identity as a team. “We to bounce have to start thinking collectively, back from a playing as one unit, not five individual tough finish players. It takes time to develop that to the 2015- mindset and familiarity, but having six 16 season. seniors should help to speed up the With some process,” he said. “We need balance ongoing and depth, and a commitment to personnel trust each other regardless of the issues, the circumstances. That will take time and Warriors effort, but will be worth it.” dropped from third place in the KCAC in midSecond, according to Jaderston, the January to a ninth-place finish as the Warriors simply need to get their mojo end of the season. “We had a hard back. “So much of basketball comes time finding consistency last year,” said down to confidence and leadership. 33 2016-2017 Basketball Media Guide
Men’s Season Preview Theodore Igwe is a 6-6 junior post whose length and athleticism should create some interesting matchups for opponents. Raybon Riden is an extremely talented junior guard who sees the floor very well and can score in a variety of ways. Sophomores Jordan Mathurin and Matthew Hart are both expected to make an immediate impact as well. “We have lots of new players as well as returning players in new roles. We have some new guys who will need to learn how we do things Leading the 2016-17 squad will be a and what we value. We really like the group of seniors who are determined potential on this team, but potential make this team the best they can alone never wins anything. It’s going be. Josiah Ray and Maurice Williams posted almost the exact same statistics to come down to how completely they buy in, how hard they work, and how last year, at 11 ppg and 6 rpg. Grant much we’re all willing to sacrifice for Speer and the common good,” observed Coach Fayola Jaderston. Oyatayo averaged 6 This season Coach Jaderston will and 5 ppg respectively, be assisted by Brent Thill, Phinehas Starks, Eddie Adesodun, and student and Jake coaches Kendall Smith and Brandon Jaderston Ringering. chipped 2 ppg. “These seniors are a great group to coach. They are strong and smart young men with great character, and give the team substance. They’ve put a lot of time in over their four years at Sterling, and now it’s time for it to pay off.” Another returner looking to increase his role this year is sophomore Trey Dubbert (4 ppg). He will be joined by a number of newcomers Coach Jaderston expects to make an immediate impact. Shooting is about being confident. Guarding is about being confident in the guys beside and behind you! Winning close games often comes down to having the confidence to take the big shot at the right moment. Again, that confidence comes from the every-day consistency of practicing and playing hard. That’s where leadership comes in. We need guys who have been here to lead the way every single day.”
