STERLING COLLEGE 2020 FALL TEAM PREVIEWS MEN’S SOCCER The Sterling College Men’s Soccer team looks to continue their success from last season, after reaching the KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals and a campaign that saw the Warriors receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. After an 11-8 record, the Warriors have returned many key players from last season with the hopes of improving on their eighth-place finish a year ago. Coming up short in many matches has fueled Sterling to finish strong and come away with critical victories throughout their schedule. Key returners for the Warriors include seniors Joel Chavez (6-0, Goalkeeper, Longmont, Colo.) Rafael Alcolea (6-0, Defender, Sevilla, Spain), Ramon Lopez (5-7, Midfielder, Caracas, Venezuela), Luis Iniguez (6-0, Midfielder, El Paso, Texas), and Steven Zeka (5-10, Defender, Seattle, Wash.) Juniors Emilio Ruiz (6’0”, Defender, Huelva, Spain.) and Nicolas Galvez (5-9, Forward, Dakar, Senegal), along with sophomores Gustavo Reyes (5-9, Midfielder, Valencia, Venezuela) and Joao Nascimento (5-10, Sao Paulo, Brazil) also brings back experience for SC. Nic Martinez is in his fourth season as head coach for the Warriors, as Sterling hopes to keep the momentum from last season heading into a new and challenging type of year. WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Sterling College Women’s
Soccer team is back for another season under head coach, Morgan Elzinga. A different season and schedule will keep the Lady Warriors on their toes, but Sterling is hoping to keep on track and find their way throughout the year. Following a 1-17 record a season ago, Sterling looks to improve and

Sterling has also brought in several talented freshmen, includ-

ing Shaylee Gibbs (5-5, Goalkeeper, Amarillo, Texas), Emorie Sautter (5-2, Midfielder, Amarillo, Texas), and Maddie Stacy (4-11, Forward, Covington, Ohio). In her second season, Morgan Elzinga is the head coach for the Lady Warriors and is assisted by Taylor Richards and Kaylee Wallentine.
VOLLEYBALL The Sterling College Volleyball team is ready for another solid season after finishing 15-21 and reaching the KCAC TourBreanne Aiku nament Quarterfinals a year ago. Falling short in several close matches last year will motivate Sterling as the team looks to capitalize on critical wins throughout the season. With a talented group of Lady Warriors looking to build off last season, Sterling is ready to challenge the KCAC’s best.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Sterling College Cross Country teams have continued to improve under second-year head coach, Cameron Magnall. Although picked to finish eleventh this season in the KCAC, as the Warriors have very few returners, a large incoming class of runners will keep the momentum going this fall. Gavin Lierz (Sr., Hiawatha, Kan.) and Nathan Jones (Soph. Seattle, Wash.) return for the men’s team, along with newcomer Isaiah Marris (Fr., Durant, Okla.). Meanwhile, the women’s team returns Jaismon Travelbee (Sr. Arlington, Kan.), Robyn Selzer (Jr., Sharon Springs, Kan.), and Casey Erickson (Soph., Greensburg, Kan.), as well as four incoming freshmen: Katie Ahrens (Holliday, Texas), Chasity Bonfonti (Chase, Kan.), Pattie Gray (Boise City, Okla.), and Sydney VanHorn (Shawnee, Kan.)
Veteran returners for Sterling are seniors Breanne Akiu (5-5, Setter, Viola, Kan.) Carmin Butterworth (5-3, Defensive Specialist, Wichita, Kan.), Annie Connor (5-9, Outside Hitter, Lenexa, Kan.) Colleen Meffert (5-11, Middle Hitter, Auxuasse, Mo.), and Meghan Mickle (6-0, Outside Hitter, Choctaw, Okla.) Juniors Eliana Ponce (5-7, Defensive Specialist, Atascosa, Texas) and Iris Cavazos (5-7, Outside Hitter, San Antonio, Texas), along with sophomores Jordyn Jellison (6-0, Middle Hitter, Protection, Kan.) and Emily Peterson (5-11, Middle Hitter, Enid, Okla.) also return to strengthen the Lady Warriors.
John Harding is in his eleventh season as head coach of the Sterling College Volleyball program. Tamara Heitschmidt also returns in her fifth season as an assistant coach after being named the 2018 KCAC Volleyball Co-Assistant Coach of the Year.
FOOTBALL
Robyn Selzer
The Sterling College Football team has continued its recent success under head coach Chase Hansen. Last fall, the Warriors finished with a 7-3 overall record for a third-place finish in the KCAC. Sterling finished the season receiving votes in the 2019 NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Postseason Poll and had 16 All-KCAC selections, including an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and an NAIA First Team All-American. Picked to finish fourth in the conference, the Warriors look to battle for the top spot in the KCAC. Key returners for the Warriors include: CRIMSON & NAVY
