STERLING COLLEGE FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS

Kwame Sexton

FOOTBALL The Sterling College Football team looks to take on the 2019 season come September, as the Warriors begin their second year with Chase Hansen as head coach. In Hansen’s first official season at the helm, Sterling finished with a 4-6 record in 2018, coming up short in a number of close games throughout the year. The Warriors finished with a solid group of All-KCAC players and an AFCA-NAIA Honorable Mention, as Sterling returns an experienced core to their field this season.

The Warriors return 10 All-Conference players from last year, as Sterling looks to turn the tables heading into a new season. After being picked to finish fifth in both the media and coaches’ poll at Media Day, the Warriors are up for the challenge. Kwame Sexton (6-0, Jr., Defensive Back, Oklahoma City, Okla.) returns to lead the Sterling defense after a breakout sophomore season in which he earned All-KCAC First Team honors at defensive back and was a AFCA-NAIA Honorable Mention selection. He finished the year with 101 tackles (10.1 per game) which led the KCAC and he collected six interceptions last season for SC. All-KCAC Honorable Mention selections Brayden Lock (6-0, Soph., Linebacker, Buhler, Kan.) Nicholas McGrew (5-9, Sr., Linebacker, Oak View, Calif.), and Twon Collymore (5-8, Soph., Defensive Back, Manning, S.C.) are back for the Warriors, adding more experience on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, Eric Butler (5-9, Sr. Quarterback, Wichita Falls,

Texas) is back for the Warriors after an All-KCAC Honorable Mention season. Cedrick Phillips (6-0, Sr. Quarterback, Stockton, Calif.) also returns to Sterling College, after previously playing for the Warriors during the 2017-18 season. Sterling also brings back All-KCAC Second Team offensive selections in Janson Robeson (6-2, Jr., Tight End, Gainesville, Texas) and Cevon Mitchell-Ford (5-9, Sr., Running Back, Sacramento, Calif.). The Warriors return key members of the offensive line as well, with All-KCAC Second Team selection Layne Becker (6-2, Jr., OL, Mulvane, Kan.), and AllKCAC Honorable Mentions Rigo Guzman (6-3, Sr., OL, Coachella, Calif.) and Logan Liles (6-2, Jr., OL, Oklahoma City, Okla.) back for SC. The Warriors start the 2019 season at the Gleason Center on September 7th, as they host the Avila University Eagles to kick-off the year. VOLLEYBALL

The Sterling College Volleyball team is ready for another solid season after finishing 17-15 overall and earning a fifth place finish in the KCAC the year prior. Following a hard fought loss in the 2018 KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals, the Lady Warriors are looking to bounce back and move their way to the top of the standings during the 2019 season.

GLEASON PROJECT UPDATE Sterling College officially broke ground on the expansion of the Gleason Physical Education Center during its groundbreaking and dedication ceremony on May 10, 2019. Students, faculty, board members, friends and supporters gathered to officially begin the first project of the SterlingNOW capital campaign. “Today is a good day for Sterling College, and a good day for the Sterling community. This project will be transformative for our campus and will benefit our students and our campus community in many ways. We are grateful, once again, for God’s faithfulness to this institution exhibited through the generosity of loyal supporters,” said Dr. Scott Rich, president.

The project will add 32,526 square feet of new space including three new classrooms, 20 new offices for faculty and coaches, the Sterling College Athletic Training and Treatment Center, a new wellness center, the First Bank Lobby & Hall of Fame, new and additional locker room space and the new Wilkey Fieldhouse. “SterlingNOW, the capital campaign for Sterling College has raised a total over of $23.2 million dollars. A little over $22 million of this total is earmarked for our construction projects, to which 492 individuals or families gave donations and pledges. We are blessed by this amazing support, which aligns with the belief that the

Sterling College mission is special, it is unique and it is in even more distinctive in the world we are living in today,” said Glennys Doane ’73, board of trustees member and capital campaign chair. In addition to expansion at the Gleason Center, a new 6,000 square foot facility to be located west of the College’s tennis courts. This facility will serve the College during the 20192020 school as a temporary wellness center as construction displaces the current weight room. In the fall of 2020, the facility will be indoor training space for the softball, baseball, track and cross-country programs and include offices for coaches. “What the Gleason Expansion will do for the athletic department will completely transform the lives of both coaches and student-athletes,”

said junior Kylah Comley of Sterling. “The benefits of expanding and adding another gymnasium will not only benefit those on campus, but it will also expand opportunities for the community.” Construction on the Gleason project started in late May. The grand opening for both buildings is slated for August 2020.

The Gleason project is the first of three building projects that are part of the $25 million SterlingNOW campaign. The College also plans to build Zaid-West Science and Research Center, a 30,000 square foot science and math building and renovate Thompson Hall, a 24,000 square foot building that currently houses the science, math and business programs.

MEET STERLING’S NEW HEAD COACHES ADAM HOOKER – MEN’S BASKETBALL Adam Hooker is a native Kansan, having grown up in Olathe where he attended Olathe North High School. He stayed in northeast Kansas to play his college basketball at NAIA powerhouse, MidAmerica Nazarene University. Following his playing career, Hooker joined the MidAmerica Nazarene staff as an assistant coach. Serving under his Hall-of-Fame mentor, Coach Rocky Lamar, Hooker was a part of three Fab Fours and the 2007 NAIA DII National Championship.

Following his impressive tenure at MidAmerica Nazarene, Hooker chose to go the high school head-coaching route. In those ranks, he has proven to be an excellent program builder. With stops at four different classes, his teams have all found sustained success with consistent state tournament performers. In his most recent coaching position, he served as head coach at Denver’s John F. Kennedy High School. Inheriting a broken program, he built another winner – including the 2018 4A DPL league title and back-to-back state tournament showings. His teams also displayed significant improvements in academic success.

Hooker is married to his wife Chrystal, a former MidAmerica Nazarene college basketball player, herself. Together they have four children, Sara Grace, Luke, Katie and Euella. “I would like to start by extending a huge thank you to Director of Athletics Justin Morris, Vice President for Athletics Scott Downing, and the rest of the search committee for having the confidence in me to lead this great program,” said Hooker. “I would like to also thank Coach Jaderston for all he’s done for the Warriors men’s basketball program over the past 13 seasons. My family and I are beyond ecstatic to be joining the Sterling family. I have long 14 C R I M S O N & N A V Y

felt called to the collegiate sidelines and this truly represents a dream job, to me. I am passionate about NAIA basketball and have significant knowledge and respect for the KCAC. We believe in the Christ-led mission of this campus community and hope to build a program that not only reflects those values but, serves as leaders in its mission.” CAMERON MAGNALL – TRACK & FIELD; CROSS COUNTRY

Cameron Magnall is in his first official season as head coach of the Cross Country/Track & Field programs here at Sterling College. He previously was the interim track and field coach during the 2019 season.

During the outdoor season, Magnall helped guide two athletes to KCAC Individual Conference Championships and three athletes qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Gulf Shores, AL. Prior to coming to Sterling College, Magnall was the Head Cross Country Coach at McPherson College from 2011-2018. Under his guidance, 14 student-athletes qualified for the NAIA National Cross Country Meet. Also serving as the head track and field coach from 2011-2015, Magnall transitioned into an assistant’s role with the track program - focusing on

distance events - as the program’s numbers grew significantly. McPherson produced 26 NAIA All-Americans, 79 KCAC Individual Event Champions, 51 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes, and his teams earned 14 NAIA Scholar Team Awards during his time with the program. His athletes broke more than 60 school records during that same timeframe.

After finishing runner-up at the KCAC Indoor Championships, both the men’s and women’s McPherson track & field squads brought home 2014 KCAC Outdoor Championship trophies. It was the first men’s team title is the college’s history and the first for the women since 1982. The men’s team went on to win three more indoor and outdoor KCAC titles during Magnall’s tenure. Magnall was named the KCAC Coach of the Year three times.

Magnall got his coaching start with six years of head coaching experience at Falcon (Colo.) High School. At Falcon, he guided the boys’ cross country team to a 2008 4A Colorado State Championship and earned 2008 Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado and Denver Post All-Colorado Coach of the Year Honors. He had previously led the squad to state appearances in 2005 and 2006. On the track, Magnall had similar success with four Nike All-Americans, five individual state champions and 58

Crimson and Navy state qualifiers. His most recent state champion came in 2009 at the boys’ 3,200m.

“I am excited for this opportunity to lead the cross country and track & field programs here at Sterling College,” said Magnall. “I want to thank Director of Athletics Justin Morris, Vice President of Athletics Scott Downing and President Scott Rich for their support and commitment to help make these programs successful. The past several months in my interim role have been a great experience and have shown how much Sterling College’s values of developing the whole person is a Christ-centered environment align with my own program and coaching philosophy. I look forward to building

on the strong foundation already laid of servant-leadership, going hand-inhand with athletic success and pushing both programs to new heights in the KCAC and the NAIA.” Magnall, an Iowa native, competed at Concordia (Minn.) and in 2005 earned a Bachelor’s degree in K-12 education with an emphasis in German and Spanish. Magnall is married to Jessica and has four kids - Delfino, Serenity, Jacob and Sadie. They reside in McPherson. MORGAN ELZINGA – WOMEN’S SOCCER
