Sterling College meets $2 million Mabee Foundation challenge grant Sterling College has announced it has raised $20 million in gifts and pledges towards the building projects for the SterlingNOW Capital Campaign, meeting the requirements of the $2 million challenge grant offered by the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla. Since Sterling achieved this goal by the deadline, the Mabee Foundation will provide a grant of $2 million, which completes the fundraising goal of the campaign’s construction projects, including a new science and research center. “We are so grateful to our donors for their faithfulness and generosity to meet the challenge. We would also like to express our enduring gratitude to the Mabee Foundation for their generosity and support for our vision for the SterlingNOW Campaign. The new science and research center and improvements to our existing facilities will impact students and future servant leaders for years to come,” said Scott Rich, president. With the grant, the campaign has now raised $23 million towards its goal of $25 million. The campaign has three main initiatives: upgrading science and academic facilities, renovating and expanding the Gleason Physical Education Center and growing the endowment. All three objectives center around Sterling College’s strategic plan, including support for its new master’s programs in athletic training and sports ministry. In addition to $22 million for construction projects, SterlingNOW includes a goal for a $3 million increase to Sterling College’s endowment, providing new resources for funding scholarships, faculty development, academic disciplines, on-going operations for buildings, new technologies and classroom equipment. The College has now raised over $1 million towards the endowment in the campaign.

The College has received over 1,800 individual pledges and gifts to the campaign, including the Mabee Foundation and also the Sunderland Foundation. Sterling also was awarded $600,000 from the Sunderland Foundation for the campaign. Additionally, Sterling received a lead naming gift commitment to the SterlingNOW capital campaign from John and Phyllis Wilkey of Sterling, Kansas. A significant feature of the expansion of the Gleason Physical Education Center will be the addition of an auxiliary gym located on the northwest corner of the facility and named in honor of the Wilkey family. The Gleason Center is the front door of Sterling College for many prospective students, visitors and fans and is the home to Sterling’s first two master’s degree programs. The creation of a Center for Health Sciences will distinguish Sterling and attract students interested in the growing health science industry. An auxiliary gym will aid class and practice schedules and expand camps, intramurals and indoor winter activity for the College and the community. For more information on SterlingNOW, including ways to give to the campaign, visit www.sterling.edu/SterlingNOW.

Facilities SC Basketball facilities needed a name and a name that was synonymous with Sterling College and the rich basketball history on that same court.

The Gleason Physical Education Center is the home of both the Warrior and Lady Warrior basketball teams. Built in 1971, it houses a 2,500 seat gymnasium, a swimming pool, the Edwards Weight Room and physical education classrooms and offices. On October 18, 1986, the building was dedicated in honor of long-time Sterling College coach and athletic director Clair L. Gleason. Gleason coached football, baseball, basketball and track during his 33-year tenure at Sterling College. The Gleason Center has also been the host site for sub-state basketball contests and the Sterling Invitational, a high school boys basketball tournament.

On Nov. 2, 2013, the court was dedicated and named after SC and Kansas Sports Hall of Famer and former women’s basketball coach, Lonnie Kruse. The Gleason Center atmosphere has been upgraded with the addition of new scoreboards which were made possible through the support of First Bank and JACAM. A project for new bleachers upstairs in the Gleason Center was completed in December 2016, giving the Gleason Center a new look and feel for fans. The Edwards Weight Center is located on the north side of the Gleason Physical Education Building. The center is named in memory of two brothers who were SC athletes in the early days of the college - Edward Edwards and John Edwards. The facility was made possible by a gift from Ed’s son Harold “Gus” Edwards and his wife, Evelyn. Gus played football for SC from 1935 to 1938 and served as team captain in 1937.
