WELCOME TO CRIMSON & NAVY Building servant leaders, who glorify Christ, in and out of competition, while striving to be Champions! Our mission statement is the goal for our Athletic Department. It is not easy to be a Champion, it takes commitment, sacrifice and persistence. To glorify Christ in all that we do, asks us to give our very best every day. There are no “off” days for Champions, only days that we don’t have competitions. We hope that you enjoy the stories and updates in each issue of the Crimson and Navy. Our hope is to peak your interest in our teams and student-athletes. They are dedicated young people who want to make a positive impact on their communities. They are proud to represent you and their families.
As we enter the Christmas season, we hope that you will have a joyous time celebrating Christ’s birth and reuniting with family and friends. Don’t forget to make plans to return to SC for a game or to see the construction progress on campus. You are always welcome in Sterling! #SwordsUp

STERLING COLLEGE WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW Basketball WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Sterling College Lady Warriors had their best season yet under head coach K.C. Bassett in 2018-19, finishing the season with a 27-6 overall record and 20-4 KCAC record. The team finished second in the conference and was the KCAC Tournament runner-up, earning their way to the 28th annual NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. This was the first time under Coach Bassett and the first since 2012, as it was the 17th appearance overall as a program. The Lady Warriors would fall in the first round to Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.) 83-73. After an outstanding year, the Lady Warriors look to build off last season’s success. Sterling returns key pieces from last year’s team, while also adding a number of exciting newcomers, as Bassett and the Lady Warriors look to keep the momentum going for the Sterling College Women’s Basketball program heading into the season. KCAC Player of the Year, Kylah Comley returns for her junior year after earning her Second Team NAIA All-American Honors. The Lady Warriors also bring back Second Team All-KCAC forward, junior Alexis Theus and Honorable Mention All-KCAC post, senior
Jessica Carrillo, as well as sophomore twin guards, Bailey and Sydney Bangert. Sterling also brings back a number of key role players including sophomore Bethany Stucky, junior Brenna Eilert, and senior Mayda Stallbaumer. Emmilley Hendrixson, a sophomore transfer Bailey & Sydney Bangert from Cloud County Community College out of Haven, Kansas, will also be a key addition to the Lady Warrior roster this season.
“We return 11 varsity letterwinners from last seasons 27-6 team,” said Bassett. “The newcomers have been pushing the returners in practice and we have been working hard day in and out. We are looking forward to building off of the success from 201819 and we are excited for the year.”

Crimson & Navy the season. The Lady Warriors already had their first true test of the season at the Ozarks Classic, falling to the reigning national champions, No. 1 Concordia University and to No. 3 College of the Ozarks in Missouri. However, Sterling will be back in action for non-conference matchups against the College of Saint Mary and Nebraska Christian College, before beginning conference play at Friends University on November 13th. MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Warriors will look to improve after last season, returning a number of players from 2018-19, while bringing in a strong group of newcomers. Head coach Adam Hooker will be in his first season at the helm for SC, as the Warriors look to start the 2019-20 season off strong. Key returners for Sterling this season include Third Team All-KCAC selection, junior forward JaMiah Windom-Haynes and seniors; forwards Isaac Ostrosky and Edo Okafor, and guards Rylee Hayes and Saleem Holden. The Warriors also return seniors Darius Stewart and Matthew Hart, along with sophomores Kenan Comley and Lucas Briar. Key newcomers to the Warrior basketball program are senior guard, Marcell Houser, junior forward, Neorck Brown, sophomore forward, Gabriel Mendez, and freshman center, Grant Olson. “Coach Jaderston left behind a great legacy and a talented senior class,” said Coach Hooker. “We are counting on that veteran
group to set a new foundation and to leave a legacy of their own. We will certainly have a different look and feel, this season, and much of our success rides on the expediency of the learning curve. We will make few promises other than a tireless work ethic aimed at energizing a program and its fan base, through an aggressive and discipline system of play. It is a new era of Warrior basketball and I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of it.”

STERLING COLLEGE ATHLETIC TRAINING The Sterling College Graduate Athletic Training Program was developed to assist and nurture the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional growth of students into the field of athletic training. It is our goal to meet the needs of the students with active clinical participation, classroom instruction and interpersonal relationships. Once a student enters into the graduate athletic training program, that student becomes part of the athletic training family at Sterling College.
“We are excited for our first graduate cohort graduating this academic year while also graduating our last undergraduate cohort,” said Pete Manely, Professor of Athletic Training and Program Director of Graduate & Undergraduate Athletic Training Education. “These six students have bought into our culture and have committed themselves to the excellence we expect of our graduates! They will be wonderful examples of what a Christian Health Care Professional should look like!” Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who work as part of a healthcare team, in collaboration with and under the direction of physicians. The services provided by ATs include prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions that occur across the span of patients’ lives. Students interested in Athletic Training must attend a school with an Athletic Training Degree Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

STERLING Construction Update: November 2019 Gleason Expansion: Excitement on campus continues to build as the vision of the Gleason Center Expansion comes to fruition. At any given time last week, there were no less than four different crews working on various parts of the building. Sheetrock is currently going up, data cables are being pulled into place, the brick facade is nearly complete, and windows have been installed to the offices on the north and east sides of the building. The steel structure for the Wilkey Fieldhouse is now in place and sheeting will begin next week. In addition, security cameras and card-reader and door locks infrastructure is being installed. We anticipate that many pledges will be fulfilled in November and December and that new gifts to the campaign will be made. Thank you to everyone who has supported and will support the SterlingNOW capital campaign. Your gifts are changing our campus and will make an eternal impact in years to come. For more information on SterlingNOW, including ways to give to the campaign and construction updates, visit www.sterling.edu/SterlingNOW.
