The 2015 season was a special year for the Warriors, but the 2016 season promises to be filled with excitement for the Sterling College faithful. The season opens on September 3rd when the Warriors travel to Orange City, Iowa to take on the Northwestern College Red Raiders, as part of the KCAC-GPAC Football Challenge. After a bye week, the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes travel to Sterling to kick off KCAC conference play on September 17th for Warrior Fest. The following week, the Warriors visit the Falcons of Friends University in Wichita on September 24th, followed by another road game in Hillsboro, as Sterling takes on the Tabor College Bluejays October 1st. The Warriors host back-to-back home games against the

Swedes of Bethany College on October 8th and the Threshers of Bethel College for Homecoming weekend on October 15th. Sterling then travels to Ottawa University to face the Braves on October 22nd, followed by a home game in Smisor Stadium against the Spires of St. Mary on October 29th. The final home game of the season has Sterling taking on the McPherson College Bulldogs on Senior Day, November 5th. The 2016 season wraps up on November 12th, when the Warriors travel to Winfield to face off against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. QUARTERBACKS Cedrick Phillips finished off an excellent freshman campaign at the QB position in the 2015 season. After a breakout performance, rushing for 327 yards in a game last season, the 5-11 sophomore looks to continue his strong suit of running the ball. But look for Phillips to also mix in some plays to the air as well. With many targets available in the offense, Phillips looks to follow up with another high-performing campaign in 2016. WIDE RECEIVERS The wide receiver position is full of talent this season. With a core group of upperclassmen, the targets are a threat to opposing defenses. Senior TJ Brown led the Warriors with over 350 yards receiving and five touchdowns last season. Seniors Chad Bennett and Nathan Frame also collected touchdowns in 2015, combining for over 375 yards on the year. Medical Red-Shirt Senior Dentton Hudspeth also returns, creating a very dangerous group on the offensive side of the ball.
2016 Preview
RUNNING BACKS The running backs have a tall task ahead of them for the 2016 season. Losing Mike Lopez to graduation, many new faces and newcomers will look to fill the void. Senior Oby Rios and Junior Richard Newell provide Sterling with some depth at the position, while Freshman Aaron Chisholm brings in some strong running ability as well. Hudspeth’s versatility gives the Warriors another option in the backfield to help with the running game. OFFENSIVE LINE After a strong rushing game last season, Sterling’s offensive line looks to keep the momentum going in 2016. Losing AllKCAC First Team Lineman Jake Holland to graduation up front provides an opportunity for newcomers to step in and learn the role. Seniors Tremayne Hutchins and Lars Lind will be the leaders on the line for the Warriors, while junior Fern Enriquez and sophomore Nate Hiatt return for more depth after limited experience last season. Transfers Anthony Ortiz and Marcus Franks also look to provide strength for the offensive line. DEFENSE LINE The defensive line looks to continue playing fast up front. Senior Keith Lowry, an All-KCAC Second Team selection, will be the leader in the trenches for the Warriors. RJ Turner also returns after an impressive junior season, collecting three tackles for a loss and a sack. Lowry and Turner combined for 56 tackles last season, putting pressure on the opposing quarterback with every step back in the pocket.
DEFENSIVE BACKS Another talented group for the Warriors on defense returns many starters across the board. The defensive backs have a solid core of returners to protect the secondary this season. All-KCAC Honorable Mention Tyus Williams returns as the senior leader for the defensive backs. Juniors Kenya Edner and Ray Winfield led the team in tackles with 69 and 58, respectively. They return to bring an experienced group to the field that has knack for finding the ball. LINEBACKERS Senior Greg Williams and junior Dezmond Howard return to lead a strong linebacker group. In 2015, Williams and Howard combined for 89 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and three sacks. Koltyn Ratliff and Nicholas McGrew look to keep up the pressure from the outside linebacker position, allowing the Warriors to keep opposing offenses in check. SPECIAL TEAMS Junior Michael Winstead takes over the kicking game for the 2016 season. Last year, Winstead was 39 for 42 in PATs for 93% on the season. Winstead will also assume the punting and field goal duties for the Warriors. On the receiving side of the special teams, seniors Nathan Frame and TJ Brown will look to be the key returners for the Warriors. Frame’s quickness and soft hands, combined with Brown’s elusiveness and agility will give punters fits as they attempt to get the ball past them this upcoming season.

KCAC Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference History The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state. The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the first successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time, the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now Kansas State University), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or four years. In about, 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and field meet which has continued yearly since, except for during the World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference. The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predeces-
sor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 -- when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975, women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992, St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, Saint Mary College-Leavenworth joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions. In the fall of 2015, the KCAC expanded to 12 teams in the conference with the addition of Oklahoma Wesleyan University and York College. The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s tennis, and men’s tennis, men and women’s lacrosse, wrestling, .

2015 Recap A Look Back at 2015 After another exciting season for Warrior football in 2014, Sterling started the 2015 season looking to climb back to the top spot in the KCAC. Anticipation continued to build over the summer months as the Sterling faithful looked forward to another thrilling season for the Warriors. The season started off with the Warriors hosting the Morningside College Mustangs for the first annual KCAC-GPAC Challenge Series. As a favorite to make a deep run in the post season, Morningside was too much for Sterling. The Warriors would fall 77-17 in the season opener. The rugged schedule continued for the Warriors as Sterling traveled to Salina, Kan. to take on the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes. The Warriors started off the game down 14-0, but a 60-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Greg Williams kept the Warriors within striking distance. Headed into halftime down 21-7, Sterling made a late surge in the fourth quarter to stay close with Kansas Wesleyan, but was unable to find a final scoring drive, and ultimately fell to the Coyotes, 28-21. With an 0-2 record, the Warriors looked to earn a big victory over Friends University on Warrior Fest. The Falcons took an early 3-0 lead, but a Sterling field goal at the end of the first quarter tied the game 3-3. The Warriors were able to come up with a touchdown by Nathan Frame to take a 10-3 lead, but the Falcons would make a late field goal before halftime to make it 10-6. In the second half, the Warriors found an offensive rhythm, when Cedrick Phillips found TJ Brown and Chad Bennett for big plays to put more points on the board. Sterling’s defense came up with huge plays including a

forced fumble to keep the Friends offense off the field. Friends would make a late run, scoring 13 points in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Sterling would hold on to the 30-19 victory, giving the Warriors a 1-2 record. The next game on the schedule for Sterling was against a tough Tabor College Bluejay squad. The Bluejays took control early, taking a 17-0 lead into halftime. The Warriors struggled to find any offensive momentum, with Tabor controlling the game. Sterling would get on the scoreboard late, but would fall to Tabor, 31-7. With a 1-3 record, it was make or break time for Sterling, as the team began to hit the middle stretch of the season. The Warriors traveled to Lindsborg, Kan., looking to snap back into the win column against the Bethany Swedes. In a back and forth game, the Warriors would prevail, earning the 37-34 victory. Cedrick Phillips would have a career game, recording 327 rushing yards and 425 yards of total offense on the day. The next game for the Warriors was against the Bethel College Threshers in North Newton, Kan. Sterling dominated early taking a 27-0 lead into halftime, behind big plays from Cedrick Phillips and TJ Brown. In the second half, the defense continued to excel, with Ray Winfield intercepting the Bethel QB to return it for a touchdown, and Tyus Williams recovering a fumble. The Warriors continued to strive on all phases, and would go on to win 47-7, giving Sterling an even record at 3-3. Sterling’s next challenge was against Ottawa University on Homecoming. The Braves struck first to make it a 7-0 game, but the Warriors found the end zone before the end of the first quarter to tie it at 7-7. Sterling continued to

gather momentum in the second quarter scoring 17 points to Ottawa’s seven, giving the Warriors a 24-14 lead at the half. In the third quarter, both Sterling and Ottawa would score again, making it 31-21 headed into the fourth. The Sterling defense came through with an interception by Ray Winfield to give the possession back to the Warriors. However, a turnover by Sterling allowed Ottawa to capitalize on a field goal, making the score 31-24. With time running out, Ottawa looked to go on a final drive to tie the game, but a big interception by Tyus Williams sealed the 31-24 victory for the Warriors as time ran out. With a 4-3 record, the Warriors had won three straight headed into the final stretch of the season. Sterling would travel to Leavenworth, Kan., to face the Spires of Saint Mary. The Warriors were in control from the beginning taking a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. A kickoff return from Mike Lopez to end half put Sterling ahead 24-13 headed into the break. The Spires would start the second half with the ball, but not for long, as the Warrior defense forced a fumble giving the possession to Sterling. Sterling would have a strong fourth quarter, scoring 20 points on the way to a 44-25 victory over Saint Mary, giving the Warriors a 5-3 record. Sterling would head to McPherson, Kan., to take on the Bulldogs of McPherson College. The Warriors struck early, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Sterling’s offense would come alive in the second quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points. Cedrick Phillips would find Mike Lopez twice and Ray Winfield would come up with a forced fumble at the goal line, allowing Phillips to score a 3 yard touchdown, giving Sterling a 28-0 halftime lead. Sterling would add another score in the third quarter putting them ahead 35-0. Sterling’s offense rushed for 315 yards,
while the defense only allowed 205 total yards of offense for the Bulldogs. McPherson would score late, but the Warriors cruised to a 35-7 victory, giving Sterling a 6-3 record. In the final game of the season, Sterling looked to capitalize on Senior Day against the visiting Southwestern College Moundbuilders. Sterling was in total control on both sides of the ball, scoring on eight of thirteen drives, while only allowing Southwestern 97 total yards of offense on the day. Offensively, Cedrick Phillips started the scoring off when he took the ball 73 yards to the house for the first touchdown of the game with just under six minutes to go in the first quarter. The Warriors increased their lead to 21-0 behind a Nathan Frame touchdown and a score by Phillips. To open the second half, Sterling would march down the field for their fourth touchdown of the day to make the score 28-0. Sterling wasn’t finished on the offensive, when TJ Brown took a sweep to the right 68-yards for his first touchdown of the game to extend Sterling’s lead to 35-0. Brown added another touchdown late in the quarter to put Sterling up 42-0. Sterling would continue its dominance across the board as Cody Allen and Swain Williams would pick off the Southwestern quarterback and Dezmond Howard and Ray Winfield would come up with fumble recoveries. Sterling would add 10 more points to the board in the fourth quarter, coasting to a 52-0 victory. Sterling College ended the 2015 season with a 7-3 overall record and a 7-2 conference record.
