Butler threw for 2,001 yards and 13 touchdowns, the 5th best total in the KCAC this season. Butler also did work on the ground last year, collecting a total of 617 yards with eight touchdowns. The All-KCAC Honorable Mention looks to continue his surge into 2018, leading the way on offense for the Warriors. WIDE RECEIVERS KCAC Offensive Player of the Year Darryl Terrell returns for the Warriors, as he led the KCAC in receptions and receiving Yards last season. Terrell finished his All-American season with 10 touchdowns, collecting a total of 85 receptions for 1,045 yards, while also adding 38 carries for 171 yards. Greer Chandler and
2018 Preview Raphael Williams also return for Sterling, as upperclassman who combined to finish with 325 yards, 33 receptions, and two touchdowns. RUNNING BACKS The running backs will have new core group to take over the rushing attack this season. Eric Haynes returns after finishing with 230 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors, while newcomer Ce’von Mitchell-Ford, a transfer from American River College, looks to be a key addition to the run game this season for Sterling. OFFENSIVE LINE Sterling’s offensive line looks to keep moving in the right direction in 2018. Junior Rigo Guzman (First Team All-KCAC) will lead the way for the Warriors, while juniors Shawn Wheat and Nicolas Parga, along with sophomores Nate Wilson and Layne Becker, will also look to provide strength up front for the offensive line. DEFENSE LINE The defensive line will work to keep up the success from last season, as the Warriors lost seniors Charles Booker, Dezmon Walker and Dominique Wilkins. Senior Vinnie Haider returns up front to anchor the defensive line, as he finished with 36 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss last season. Freshman JT Duree from Central Christian High School is a solid newcomer who could make an impact on the defensive line as well this season for the Warriors.
graduated. Junior Maurice Rucker and sophomore Dwight Wilkerson return for Sterling, as Rucker finished with 43 tackles and nine pass break ups, while Wilkerson led Sterling with three interceptions, collecting 35 tackles and six pass break ups. Sophomore newcomer Kwame Sexton is another key defensive back that the Warriors are looking at to join the defensive backfield this season. LINEBACKERS Losing All-KCAC linebackers Swain Williams and Dezmond Howard, leaves the Warriors with big spots to fill. However, Sterling will count on senior Nicholas McGrew (45 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions 1 sack, 1 forced fumble) and sophomore Lucas Dunbar (19 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble) to lead the way. Newcomers Antwon Smith (Junior; West L.A. College) and Brayden Lock (Freshman; Buhler High School) look to be key additions to the Warriors defense, as Sterling looks to keep the pressure on opposing teams. SPECIAL TEAMS The Warriors will look to replace All-KCAC selection Michael Winstead on the kicking duties this season. Sophomore Bo Rouse Jr. returns as an option for Sterling, looking to make an impact for the Warriors. On the receiving side of the special teams, All-KCAC First Team Kick Returner Maurice Rucker will be a key piece to the Warrior special teams. Rucker finished with 22 returns for 563 yards last season for Sterling, ranking second in the KCAC.
DEFENSIVE BACKS The defensive backs will look to replace key players from last season, as All-KCAC selections Kenya Edner and Ray Winfield

KCAC Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference History The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state. The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the first successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time, the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now Kansas State University), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or four years. In about, 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and field meet which has continued yearly since, except for during the World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference. The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predeces-
sor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 -- when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975, women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992, St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, Saint Mary College-Leavenworth joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions. In the fall of 2015, the KCAC expanded to 12 teams in the conference with the addition of Oklahoma Wesleyan University and York College and added the 13th member institution, Avila University in 2018. The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, men and women’s lacrosse, and wrestling, .

2017 Recap A Look Back at 2017 The 2017 Sterling College Football team looked to continue their success from the previous year, hoping to compete for the top spot in the KCAC. With a number of new faces and hard fought victories, the Warriors would unite to put together one of the most exciting seasons in history, capping off an excellent year to earn the KCAC Championship. With Chuck Lambert at the helm as head coach for his second season, the Warrior fans were taken on a ride that will be remembered forever. The season started with the No. 14 Warriors hosting the No. 11 Doane University Tigers in the KCACGPAC Challenge. Sterling and Doane battled it out as the game came down to the wire. After an early lead from the Tigers at the half, Sterling would answer with a surge of their own late in the action to make it a one score game. However, the Tigers would hold off the Warrior rally, defeating Sterling, 34-28. Looking to bounce back the following week, the Warriors would make the long trek up to North Dakota to face Mayville State University. With a new lineup of players, Sterling would capitalize early on offense to take a lead at half. However, the Comets would use the home crowd energy to battle back, keeping the game close. A key pick six from Nicholas McGrew would give the Warriors the lift they needed, as Sterling would hold on for the victory over Mayville State, 44-40. Heading into conference play, the No. 20 Warriors would begin the KCAC slate against Southwestern College. After taking a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter, a weather delay would halt the action between the Warriors and Moundbuilders. With the storm passing by, the game would resume, as a huge interception and score from Ray Winfield would seal the victory for Sterling, as the Warriors would defeat the Moundbuilders, 28-14.

With a big game around the corner in Salina against No. 24 Kansas Wesleyan University, the No. 18 Warriors looked to keep their momentum on track as they took on the Coyotes in the KCAC Game of the Week. A miscue on special teams by the Coyotes would allow Sterling to get on the board in the second quarter to make it 7-0. The Warriors would keep the pressure on Kansas Wesleyan forcing a safety before the half, making it 9-0 heading into the break. In the second half, the two teams would not disappoint, putting together exciting plays on both sides of the ball. After trading scores throughout the remainder of the game, the score would be tied at 23-23 in the final seconds with the Warriors having possession on the Kansas Wesleyan 12-yard line. Needing a field goal to win, senior Michael Winstead would connect on a 29-yard field goal as time expired, lifting Sterling to victory over Kansas Wesleyan, 26-23. Coming off a key victory, the No.19 Warriors were back in action at home against the Falcons of Friends University. After a slow start, the Falcons would lead at the break 15-10. However, a strong fourth quarter surge from the Warriors by way of key plays from Eric Butler and Darryl Terrell would help the Warriors seal the comeback victory over the Falcons, 19-18. The next game proved to the game of the season, as the No. 17 Warriors hosted the No. 16 Tabor College Bluejays for Homecoming. With both teams coming in undefeated in conference play, the game looked to be the decisive factor for the conference championship. The Warriors would get off to slow start against the Bluejays, falling behind 21-3 early in the second quarter. However, Sterling would continue to fight, scoring back-to-back touchdowns before the end of the half to make it 21-17. After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams would head into the fourth period, as the Warriors looked to jump ahead for the first time. With time running out on Sterling’s chances, a key turnover by the
2017 Recap Bluejays would give the Warriors life in the final minutes of the game. Needing to move down the field quickly and efficiently, Sterling would come up with big plays down the stretch to reach the red zone with second on the clock. After numerous goal line plays, including penalties and back-to-back untimed downs, Darryl Terrell would score on a sweep with 0:00 on the clock, giving the Warriors the 23-21 comeback victory over Tabor. After a hard fought win over Tabor, the No. 15 Warriors would head to Lindsborg to take on the Bethany College Swedes. Coming into the game, the Swedes were off to a hot start of their own sitting right behind the Warriors in conference play with a 3-1 KCAC record. Both teams started out strong, scoring early and often in the first half, as Bethany would lead 16-13 at the break. Needing to find a spark to get back in the game, the Warriors would get a punt return for a touchdown from Raphael Williams, making it 23-22 to start the fourth, but the Swedes would answer with a score of their own to extend their lead. Sterling would score late in the final minutes to reach within two, but Bethany would hold off the Warriors, handing Sterling their first conference loss, 30-28. Looking to get back on track, the Warriors would travel to Bethel College to take on the Threshers. A quick start by the Warriors including a pair of touchdowns from Janson Robeson, would allow Sterling to take an early 21-9 lead into the break. The Threshers would continue to battle, coming up with key plays of their own to keep within distance of the Warriors, but a late field goal and strong defensive stops for Sterling would keep the Warriors ahead for the 31-26 victory. The next game for the Warriors was against the Ottawa University Braves, as Sterling looked to keep their momentum going on Senior Day. The Warriors would explode on offense, as Sterling would lead 34-0 at the break. The Warrior defense would also do their part, keeping the Braves from putting any consecutive drives together. The Warriors would add another score late in route to defeating Ottawa in Smisor Stadium, 41-7. No. 18 Sterling would hit the road, this time heading to Leavenworth to take on the University of Saint Mary Spires. Sterling dominated early, taking a 26-0 lead into halftime using key plays down the stretch. In the second half, the Spires would get on the board, but the Warriors would continue to increase their lead behind plays from Eric Butler and Darryl Terrell, coming away with a 39-20 road victory over Saint Mary. In their final game of the regular season, the No. 16 Sterling College Warriors would travel
to McPherson to take on the McPherson College Bulldogs. With the KCAC Championship in sight, Sterling once again jumped out to an early lead, making it 21-7, but the Bulldogs would answer back with two scores of their own to tie the game at 2121 at the half. Needing to turn up the intensity, the Warriors would come out strong in the second half on both sides of the ball. Key plays from Aaron Chisolm, Eric Butler, and Darryl Terrell would give the Warriors the spark they needed to prevail over McPherson, giving Sterling the 50-34 victory. The win would earn Sterling the 2017 KCAC Championship as the Warriors would finish the regular season with a 9-2 overall record and a KCAC record of 8-1. With an excellent finish to the regular season, Sterling held their spot at No. 16 in the rankings, earning an automatic bid into the NAIA Football Championship Series as KCAC Champions. As the selection show made its debut, the Warriors discovered their matchup as they were selected to take on No. 3 Morningside College in the First Round of the NAIAFCS. In Sioux City, the Warriors and the Mustangs took the field for the First Round of the NAIAFCS. Morningside would strike first to take a quick 7-0 lead, but the Warriors would work patiently on offense, earning a score of their own late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Morningside would continue to put together key plays on both offense and defense, taking a large lead into the half to make it 35-7. The Warriors would struggle against the Mustangs in the second half, quickly falling behind to Morningside. Unable to create any momentum of their own, No. 16 Sterling would fall to No. 3 Morningside, with a final score of 63-7. Sterling finished the 2017 season with a 9-3 overall record and an 8-2 conference record, earning the 2017 KCAC Championship. Sterling had 15 Warriors selected to All-Conference teams, including Darryl Terrell being named the KCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Terrell was also selected as an AFCA-NAIA Second Team All-American at wide receiver. The 2017 Sterling College Football team will go down in school history, as one of the all-time greats and as Champions.
