KCAC Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference History The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state. The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the first successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time, the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now Kansas State University), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or four years. In about, 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and field meet which has continued yearly since, except for during the World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference. The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predeces-

sor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 -- when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975, women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992, St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, Saint Mary College-Leavenworth joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions. In the fall of 2015, the KCAC expanded to 12 teams in the conference with the addition of Oklahoma Wesleyan University and York College and will add Avila University in the fall of 2018. The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, men and women’s lacrosse, and wrestling, .

2016 Recap A Look Back at 2016 The 2016 Sterling College Football season proved to be one for the record books, as the team displayed exciting play game after game. With Chuck Lambert in his first year at the helm as head coach, the Warrior fans were eager to see what this team was about throughout the year. The season started with the Warriors making the trip to Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern College for the second annual KCAC-GPAC Challenge. Sterling and Northwestern battled it out as the game came down to the wire. However, the Warriors would use a late score by TJ Brown and key defensive stops to hold off the Red Raiders, to earn the 28-21 victory. The Warriors would return to Sterling for Warrior Fest as the No. 10 Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes were in town. Sterling started off quickly as Cedrick Phillips scored an 85-yard touchdown to open the game. The Warriors continued their strong start going into halftime up 31-0. Sterling made key plays throughout the game, including two interceptions and fumble recovery for a score by Dezmond Howard as the Warriors cruised over the No. 10 Coyotes, 43-12. With a 2-0 record and a dominant victory over ta ranked opponent, Sterling moved up into the polls at No. 18. Sterling would then head to Wichita to take on Friends University. After a weather delay moved the game to Sunday, the Warriors and Falcons went back and forth until the final seconds. Sterling had a chance to win the game on the final play in the end zone, but would come up short as the Warriors fell to Friends, 42-38. With a big game around the corner in Hillsboro

43 2017 Football Media Guide

at No. 12 Tabor College, the No. 25 Warriors looked to get back on track to pick up a key win on the season. Sterling and Tabor would keep it close in the first quarter, as Cedrick Phillips would find TJ Brown for the early score. The Bluejays would score with a minute left, but Ray Winfield would block the extra point, giving Sterling the 7-6 lead after the first. The Warrior offense would find their rhythm in the second quarter, as Sterling scored 21 unanswered points to jump ahead 28-6. However, the momentum would shift in Tabor’s favor in the second half, as the Bluejays would score on back-to-back possessions to retake the lead 3228. After both teams traded scores, the Warriors would answer back by taking a 42-39 lead with less than 30 seconds to play. However, Tabor would move the ball down the field quickly and efficiently to score in the final seconds to defeat Sterling, 45-42. With a 2-2 record, Sterling needed to bounce back into the win column. The Warriors regrouped taking on Bethany College in Smisor Stadium looking to do just that. Sterling started hot and never looked back, as Cedrick Phillips finished with 355 yards in the air and Aaron Chisolm racked up 134 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving the Warriors a 56-6 victory over the Swedes. The next game for the Warriors was against the Bethel College Threshers as Sterling looked to pick up another victory on Homecoming. Both teams exploded offensively, as Sterling led Bethel 35-33 at the half. The Warriors would continue their offensive surge into the second half scoring 35 more points, behind big plays from Nathan Frame and Dentton Hudspeth. Bethel would use big plays of the own, but

2016 Recap

Sterling proved to be too much for the Threshers late in the game, earning the 70-56 victory at home. Looking to keep the momentum going, Sterling traveled to Ottawa to take on the Ottawa University Braves in another offensive showdown. Sterling dominated early, taking a 28-3 lead into halftime. In the second half, Ottawa would start to find their offensive rhythm, but the Warriors continued to find ways to score by creating turnovers on defense. Phillips would have a record-breaking day, finishing with a total of 629 yards, throwing for 589 and six touchdowns, as the Warriors defeated the Braves, 65-50. As Sterling found themselves back in the rankings with a 6-2 record, the next challenge for the No. 18 Warriors was against the visiting RV University of St. Mary Spires. Sterling once again jumped out to an early lead, as TJ Brown took the opening kickoff to the house, to lead 7-0. The Spires struggled against the Sterling defense, as a forced fumble by Swain Williams and an interception from Tyus Williams created scoring opportunities for the Warriors. Sterling would continue to make plays throughout the game, earning scores from Chad Bennett and Frame, as the Warriors would go on to defeat the Spires, 51-9. With one last home game on the schedule, the No. 15 Warriors would host McPherson College on Senior Day. Sterling would again take an early lead, jumping ahead 20-7 after the first quarter. In the end, Phillips would finish with 460 passing yards connecting with TJ Brown, Nathan Frame, and Chad Bennett for touchdowns. Despite the Bulldogs strong defensive game and late comeback, the Warriors would keep their win streak alive, defeating McPherson, 44-31. With a shot at the playoffs around the corner, the No. 15 Warriors needed a big win at Southwestern College to finish off the regular season. After the news of the passing of Xavier Bradford and Esther Jenkerson earlier in the week, the Warriors took on an emotional and exciting game, as Sterling would be in control from start to finish. The Warriors led 42-6 after the first quarter and pushed ahead 49-13 at the end of the half. Sterling continued their

dominance into the third quarter, scoring 21 unanswered to take a 70-13 lead over the Moundbuilders. With both sides of the ball executing tremendously, the Warriors soared to a 77-22 victory, finishing the regular season with an 8-2 record and a KCAC record of 7-2. With an excellent finish to the regular season, Sterling moved up to No. 13 in the rankings, seeking to be selected as an at-large bid into the NAIA Football Championship Series. As the selection show made its debut, the Warriors discovered their fate, as they were selected to take on No. 2 Baker University in the First Round of the NAIA-FCS. In Baldwin City, the Warriors and the Wildcats battled it out, as the game was a rematch of Sterling’s previous First Round game in the 2013 NAIA-FCS. The Warriors would fall behind early, 17-0 at the end of the first, but an offensive surge in the second quarter from Phillips connecting on scores with Brown and Frame made it 24-14 at the half. The Wildcats continued their strong offensive game scoring 20 points in the second half compared to the Warriors 7, as No. 13 Sterling would fall to the eventual national runner-up, No. 2 Baker, with a final score of 44-21. Sterling finished the 2016 season with an 8-3 overall record, breaking many KCAC all-time records including total scoring (535), total touchdowns (74), total offense yards per game (516) and scoring offense (48.6/gm). Sterling had three AFCA-NAIA All-Americans in TJ Brown (First Team) and Cedrick Phillips and Lars Lind (2nd Team) as well as multiple players selected to the KCAC All-Conference teams, putting together one of the best seasons in school history.
