The View from the Center of the Polar Vortex Well, I hope you’re all staying warm and that your Studebakers are safe and snug in your garages, barns, sheds, or wherever you store them during the winter months. Our garage is insulated but not heated, so I spend as little time in it as possible. Grace, our ’54 Commander Starliner, is hooked up to the Battery Tender, and her tank is full of fuel treated with Ethanol Defense, so she’ll be ready to go when we finally have more clement (that’s the opposite of inclement, isn’t it) weather with no salt residue on the roads. I certainly hope you have the proper mix of antifreeze in your car’s radiator or that you drained it in the fall. I neglected to drain the cooling system of our Model A Ford and it froze solid. Luckily, that didn’t result in any damage, but there’s no reason I should have forgotten. I hope you were able to make it to our February 8th business meeting in Havre de Grace, Maryland. There were so many things on my calendar for that date that I had to miss it due to a commitment that I made last October. (And if I hadn’t had that commitment, I would have been in Barcelona, Spain with my wife, Cathy, who was there on business.) Please check our calendar of events elsewhere in this issue. We have some special things planned for the rest of this year. And since this is my second term as president of our club, please consider running for president for next year. I never thought I could handle being the president of anything – that I would be far out of my depth – but it has turned out to be rather easy. If you are interested in running and want to know what it is all about, just call me or send me an email. While you’re staying inside where it’s warm, take a look at our updated Keystone website as well as the Studebaker Drivers Club website. And if you haven’t visited the Studebaker Forum in a while, you’re missing some great stuff. You might even be able to answer another club members questions. Hope to see you at the Swap Meet.

As I write this, January 2014 is coming to an end. It has been way to cold for me, although I did get to drive my Studebaker to the Keystone planning meeting on Jan 12th at Midway diner. I attended a swap meet in Allentown and visited a few open houses at some area restoration shops. Just a few of the auto related things to do in the winter months. It‟s really interesting to see what‟s going on in the hobby. Our planning meeting went real well. Keystone members planned out our activities for the year and into 2015. The Swap Meet this year will be March 6, 7, and 8th. Don‟t miss it. I hope the weather is nice enough I can drive my Studebaker. Lots of other activities are planned so there is something for everyone. Plan on attending as many Keystone functions as you can. See you there. I had a pleasant surprise the beginning of January. A big envelope showed up in my mail box. I just figured it was Michael Petti‟s article for his March Toy Dept. He is always very prompt with the Toy Dept. Thanks Mike. I opened the envelope without even looking at the return address. Much to my surprise was two calendars from “Auto Restorer” magazine. My „60 Hawk was on the cover of the calendar and in August. Bob Tomaine did a story on my car for “Auto Restorer” back in Feb. of 2009, but I sure wasn‟t expecting to be in their calendar for 2014.

MEMBERSHIP NOTES OOPS..... A mistake took place on the last mailing of Keynotes. Information is taken directly from the membership database and converted into mailing information that is supplied to the printer of Keynotes. The alignment of the name and addresses was off and a lot of you got Keynotes with a name on it you didn't recognize. It seems the USPS delivers by address and not by name as most everyone got Keynotes. If you did NOT GET Keynotes this last issue, would you please call me at the number at the bottom of this page, or email me and I will hopefully be able to send you a copy. A great number of our members have email addresses and I have been using those email addresses to send out reminders using Constant Contact throughout January to remind them of dues expiration. The result is that almost 75% of our membership has renewed their membership by check or online. THANK YOU!! For the rest of our membership I offer this reminder:

RAFFLE CAR REPORT Another successful raffle is completed!! As predicted, we sold out of tickets on the Avanti early. The last ticket was sold on January 5th, 2014. We would have sold out by mid-December had the Hershey Fall Meet not been a washout. Only 64 tickets were sold there, compared to several hundred in past years. I want to again thank all those recognized in the last issue of Keynotes for selling (or buying) at least 30 tickets. I neglected to mention Frank Hunter and Brad Johnson last time- Frank earned a free Keystone membership, and Brad earned both Keystone and National. If I missed any others, please call it to my attention. I also want to recognize those who purchased or sold lesser amounts of tickets than the 30 required to gain formal recognition! You are also very important to the success of the raffle. In reality, considering the size of this club, if every member bought or sold just 10 tickets we would sell out without any advertising!!! Now it is time to move onward and upward with the 2015 raffle. If you did not see the picture last time, note the 1951 Commander Landcruiser pictured on the rear cover. This beautiful black car is in magnificent condition. It was completely examined and small corrections, to insure road worthiness, were made by master mechanic Jim Shoul. Expert detailing was completed by Nelson Berlin to bring the car to near showroom appearance. Studebaker International discounted a new set of full wheelcovers that we purchased to enhance the appearance, and we put on new radial tires to insure roadability. This car needed little, but thanks to Jim and Nelson, it now really pops!! Try to stop at the Studebaker York Swap Meet and see it in person. For those members who may be interested, I have a few tickets available now for resale. However. THEY MUST BE SOLD AND RETURNED TO ME , no later than 5/31/14. This is due to the fact that the license for our small games of chance expires on that date. I will have the rest of the tickets printed with the new license information on them after that date. If you know you can sell tickets quickly, and desire them now, use the form printed elsewhere in Keynotes or call me and I will send tickets and flyers/cards with color pictures on them to you. There is also a photo spread on the website of 15 pictures. Please ignore the dates on the pictures--they were taken in late October 2013, but since I am technologically challenged, I was unable to change the date on my camera. I hope to have someone correct my camera date and I will take a new series of pictures to post after the Studebaker York Swap Meet. I urge all who helped me so much last year to continue to do so again this year. Those of you who did not to join the effort last year, please add your support to help your club succeed in this endeavour. To give you some idea how well this car should do, as of today, January 26, 2014, 200 tickets have already been sold!!!! STUDEBAKER YORK SWAP MEET Keystone Region Chapter will have a Consignment table at the Studebaker York Swap Meet. It will be open to all Keystone members. If you have any Studebaker parts you want to sell, please let me know so we can try and sell them for you, or better yet, volunteer for the consignment table and help sell the stuff. Keystone will be collecting 10% plus 6% state tax for their efforts. Two spaces (2) will be set up in Hort Hall. Clean parts only. If you are interested in selling or helping at the consignment table call, e-mail. Or bring your stuff to the Swap Meet. All parts must be priced and members identification on parts. On March 7-9 at the Studebaker York Swap Meet, we will again have our book sale and Chinese Auction With the proceeds going to the troops stationed in war zones. As in the past, we sent boxes of goodies to some of them. We ask for your help in donating books and nick-knacks, etc. Last year we sent two boxes to Afghanistan to one of our servicemen, who is a neighbor of a member of the Keystone Region Chapter. Please look around your home and ask friends and relatives to consider saving books for us. You can drop them off at our regular meetings or at the Swap Meet. 2014 YORK STUDEBAKER SWAP MEET The 2014 Swap meet is quickly approaching. There are currently only 18 spaces left in Old Main. That number decreases daily many vendors are returning plus some new vendors. We currently have 45 vendors in Old Main. Keystone will have the hospitality area in Old Main, Studebaker Museum display, and Keystone Club Membership renewal. Delmarva Chapter will attend with 50th SDC meet info to be held June 28- July 5. In Horticulture Hall. The used Books sale will be held. Bring your old books. The silent actions will be taking place. Seventeen craft vendors have signed up so far. Joanne Ehrhart keeps track of vendors to insure a variety. There is a vendor selling handmade wood rocking horses and other designs. A Vendor selling handmade wooden utensils and bowls. Longaberger Baskets, jewelry, Knitted scarves, remix clothing designs, plus other stuff. The Keystone Consignment Table will again be in Hort. Hall. Across from the Raffle car area. Bring your parts. Put a price on them with a sticker of some sort. A 10% fee will be charge when item is sold. We need part time or full time help manning this table. Call Jeff Sheaffer 717- 865- 5560 he has the answers. The Avanti will be given away on Sat March 6.The 2015 raffle car a ‘51 Land Cruiser will be on display with tickets being sold. KEYSTONE SUPPORTS OUR TROOPS Keystone Studebaker Chapter's donation to PA Wounded Warriors, Saturday, December 7th, 2013 at our club Christmas Banquet in Mifflinburg, PA. The PA Wounded Warriors is a 100% volunteer organization with 100% of all donations ending up in the service of our wounded veterans. Zero percent spent on administration or solicitation; this organization is run entirely with volunteers. That means you will need to seek them out to if you want to make a contribution. They do not solicit! It is strictly by word of mouth contributors. The PA Wounded Warriors was founded by The late Maj. Gen. Gerald Sajer and his wife, Helen, have been on the frontlines of aiding veteran families. They founded the non-profit PA Wounded Warriors in 2006. They started out in a simple way, driving to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (near Washington, D.C.) to visit with wounded soldiers, including many amputees, and their families. Through the years, the Sajers continued to bring veterans to their farm. A nurse, Helen is able to provide special care and cater to dietary restrictions. As friends and neighbors learned what was going on, they donated food, transportation and recreation. As word spread, PA Wounded Warriors started working with the VA Hospital in Lebanon and getting calls about other veteran needs. Warriors, Inc. is a Pennsylvania Non-Profit Corporation that has 501(c)(3) charitable Pennsylvania Wounded status from the Internal Revenue Service. We offer Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, their families, or Pennsylvania veterans with medical emergencies in their families financial assistance. IMPORTANT PEOPLE Most of you know a life-time and charter member of Keystone SDC, Lee Reish, Sr. Lee died 1/3/2014 at his home. Lee & Thelma were very active in the Keystone club and will be greatly Missed. Keep Thelma and the Reish family in your thoughts and prayers. After a lot of thought I would like the donation for my father Lee Reish to be given to the studebaker drivers club for the trophies at the national meet in honor my dad. I see each year they advertise in turning wheels for this. Thank You William R. Reish
Some of you may remember when Dan and Emma Lou were members of Keystone SDC. Emma Lou is having some serous health issues. Please keep Emma Lou in your thoughts and prayers!
Lewis Walton, a former Keystone member. I know many of our members would remember him and his wife, Frances. Great folks. It can be read at LancasterOnline,com/Obituaries and is listed as H. Lewis "Lew" Walton 1917-2013. Lewis passed away on December 9 following a stroke. He was 96. His green Studebaker truck was featured in the book, "SOMEPLACE ELSE" by Carol P. IMPORTANT PEOPLE A TRIBUTE TO BERNADETTE FIRCE Yesterday, we attended the funeral of our friend, Bernadette Firce. The church in Levittown was beautiful. We sat with Dan Dobbins, who drove from New York extending respect for Gary and Bernie following a long-time friendship. As we exited the sanctuary, we noticed Ed, Wenda and Sarah Wenger. There may have been other Keystoners there, but we did not see them. We understand there were multitudes at the viewing, held the night before the day of the funeral. We shared social get-togethers with Gary and Bernie at their home and ours, and occasionally met for lunch or supper at a restaurant that was equally “distant” for the people meeting. Long-time Keystone members, Gary and Bernie were highly visible and well-known in the club. Bernie was active through the years, willing to cheerfully volunteer her time. She always had a smile and a hug for all. That optimistic and courageous attitude carried her through Gary’s illness and subsequent wheel-chair bound life. She was an exceptional care-giver, and an even better wife. Many friends and family members were at the funeral to support Gary and honor the memory of Bernadette. The catholic service was officiated by three priests, who spoke highly of Bernie. The service was a lovely testimony to a beautiful lady. She will be greatly missed. Don and Sue Mallory
IN MEMORIUM-BERNADETTE FIRCE 1940-2013 I can’t remember the first time I met Bernadette (Bernie, as I called her), but it seems that I have always known her. That is the way she was. A friend to everyone she met. Whenever we would be together, she would remember things we had talked about the last time we were together and remember to ask me how things were going. She was interested in my family and loved to be involved with two of our grandchildren who would often travel with us on Keystone spring and fall tours. Once she walked the stairs of the Statue of Liberty with our grandson, Tom, who was so anxious to go to the top. When he was getting married, Bernie and Gary came to his wedding shower. This was very special to all of us. I remember Bernie at the SDC International Meets with a sign on her back saying that she had raffle car tickets for sale for that year’s Keystone Raffle Car. She did very well selling them. Bernie and Gary attended many SDC International Meets. I have a picture of Bernie and me trying to do the hoola hoop at the meet in Spokane, Washington. Another picture is one of the Firces, Don and Sue Mallory, Stan and Gloria Richard, Tom and I travelling and touring on our way to the Charlotte, NC meet. Other pictures that I have show them at a table with other Keystoners at the various fun nights at the meets. They were always surrounded by friends. Gary and Bernie stayed overnight with us on several occasions when day tripping with Keystone. We had a great time visiting into the late night hours. She took a liking to our cats (we always had one or two), but Gary never seemed to care much for cats. Somehow, though, two cats did win a place in their home and hearts. Their names: Tom and Nancy. When Gary became sick, she worked with him everyday to keep his body in working order and was always looking for new ways to help him. Whenever I would have information of a place to contact or something to read concerning the West Nile Virus, I would pass that information on to her. She would follow up, but as they often found out, so little is known about this illness. It was learning for all. Her smile will be one of the first memories to come to mind when I hear her name. KEYSTONE MAIL BAG "My other car is a Studebaker" We have all seen those bumper stickers. My wife Joanne wears her's proudly, even cleaning it on occasion, on her nameless daily driver which is seldom washed. On a typical shopping day she was approached by a gentleman in the parking lot as she returned to her car. He saw her bumper sticker and decided to wait for the owner. He asked if she really did have a Studebaker. Of course with pride she said, "yup". He then proceeded to explain that he had a Studebaker '52 Champion for years but no longer does. However he kept the Studebaker keys. He had been carrying them around for years looking for a Studebaker owner to give them to. Joanne was the lucky recipient. To continue the gentleman's Studebaker benevolence and in the spirit of Christmas, Joanne had our President, Alan Mende, at the Keystone Christmas Party give the two keys to owners of a 52 Champion at the Party. The caretakers of these keys were Brad Johnson and Charlie Stigerwalt. Sadly, Joanne lost the gentleman's name. But he can rest assured that the spirit of Studebaker continues. This little story just tugs at your Studebaker heart, doesn't it?? Bricklin 1964 Studebaker Major model and toy manufacturers have not yet made a replica of the 1964 Studebaker sedan or Daytona hardtop. If you want bread and butter 1964 Studebakers, then you have to go to the cottage industry. Only two firms have made replicas. Superba made a realistic kit in 1:87-scale of the 1964 Studebaker four-door sedan. This was featured in the June 2009 issue of Keystone Keynotes. Tim Palmer from Fairbanks, Alaska has made finished replicas of the 1964 Studebaker four-door sedan and Daytona. These are in 1:43-scale. He also plans to make a two-door sedan miniature. Tim calls his operation “the Bricklin factory” because he primarily makes miniatures of the mid-seventies sports car. Tim’s replica of a Studebaker has no interior. So at first glance it may be hard to tell whether his 1964 Studebakers are first or second series. The former were made in South Bend and the latter were assembled in Hamilton, Ontario. The Hamilton Studebakers had white steering wheels, while those from South Bend matched interior colors or were two-toned. There were enough Studebaker engines for all 1964 model year Studebakers built in Hamilton. These were left over motors from South Bend. Tim mentioned that his replicas are more of a caricature of a Studebaker. They have exaggerated proportions. They also have after market wheels and tires. The overall appearance is one of a sportier look, according to Tim. Studebaker offered a variety of engine choices in 1964. “Jet-Thrust” powered engines went beyond the normal six and V8 motors. There were four versions of these performance engines. They were called: R1, R2, R3, and R4. Horsepower ratings were 240, 289, 335, and 280 for R1, R2, R3, and R4 power plants, respectively. R2 and R3 were supercharged. R1, R2, and R3 had one four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. The R4 had two four-barrel carburetors and dual exhausts. All four “Jet-Thrust” engines were available for the bread and butter Studebakers. In reality, only one R3 engine was placed in a “B & B” Studebaker for 1964. This was a two-door Commander. Only one R4 engine was placed in a “B & B” 1964 Studebaker. This was a Daytona hardtop. The other “Jet-Thrust” 1964 “B & B” vehicles had either R1 or R2 engines. R engines were only available on the South Bend built Studebakers. Tim’s replicas have dual exhausts. Therefore, his miniatures are of the first series 1964 Studebaker. Dave Shrock’s Remarkable Model If you think the Studebaker miniatures that Dave Shrock has created over the years are terrific, then you have to see the one Dave made when he was 18 years old. It is probably one of his finest, if not the best. Dave decided to make a replica of his father’s 1953 Studebaker Starliner in the spring of 1958. It took him over five hundred hours. The time was worth it because the result was outstanding. Dave’s model was scaled to perfection (1:18-scale), and included minute detailing. Unlike the Shrock Brothers models that are made of metal, this replica was composed of wood, aluminum, and cardboard. The body was wood. The hood and trunk were made of cardboard, and then laminated by wood. The bumpers and grille were made with aluminum. Dave’s miniature had a white roof and a red body just like his dad’s car Dave’s replica could certainly compete with those from Franklin Mint and Danbury Mint when it came to features. Like those of the two giant model firms, Dave’s miniature had doors, trunk, and hood that opened. Similar to the two conglomerates, the front seat on Dave’s replica folded forward, had front and rear springs, and a spare tire in the trunk. This was no stationary model. It was not even a push mobile. Instead, Dave’s 1953 miniature went on its own! Dave installed a 6-volt electric motor that made his replica go forward and reverse. Dave’s model even had a working “transmission” and drive shaft. Dave’s realistic looking replica was featured in the January 8, 1959 issue of the Union PressCourier newspaper of Patton, Pennsylvania. That caught the attention of Studebaker-Packard Corporation’s Public Relations Department. The result was that Eugene J. Harding, the firm’s legendary chief engineer, sent a letter of praise to Dave. In addition to congratulating Dave on his “remarkable model”, Mr. Harding sent David a JoHan promo of the newly released 1959 Lark. The 1:24-scale promotional model was delivered to L.C. Hegarty & Son. This was the Studebaker dealership in Coalport, Pennsylvania. It made for a great photo op for Studebaker, the local dealership, and of course, for Dave. Continued on next page:

Schuco Packard Hawk I can hear the howls now. Some will be complaining that this is a club for Studebakers, not Packards. Why a Packard toy article? Because this article is about the 1958 Packard Hawk which is really a Studebaker Hawk. Along with the Edsel, the Packard Hawk was the only other new brand for 1958. This car was based on the avant-garde 1953 Studebaker that was designed by Bob Bourke. Depending upon your opinion, Duncan McRae either updated or downgraded the original design. Three distinguishing features included the fiberglass “catfish mouth grille”, Imperial influenced birdbath spare tire on the trunk, and exterior armrests consisting of tan leather. Also, traditional Packard wheel covers were added. Roy T. Hurley, president of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, which had financial control of Studebaker, had a Maserati style front end grafted onto a Studebaker Hawk for his personal use. Studebaker managers thought this car might sell and put it into production as the Packard Hawk. One may argue that the 1956 Studebaker Hawk (with the Packard 352-cid V8 and 275 horsepower) was more of a Packard than the Packard Hawk (with the Studebaker supercharged 289-cid V8 and 275 horsepower). The Schuco Hawk is a convertible version of the Packard Hawk. In reality, there was no convertible Hawk – Packard or Studebaker. However, this is the closest thing one will get to a miniature of a 58 Packard. The Schuco Hawk is a Japanese tin toy. Unlike the American plastic promotionals of the time that accurately reflected the lines of the real car they were modeled after, Japanese tin toys often exaggerated the lines of the real autos they replicated. However, for those who felt the Hawks became cluttered with doodads over the years, then this Japanese tin is an accurate rendition. All the ad-on doodads are glaringly highlighted. In 1958 about 8,172 Studebaker Hawks were produced, while only 588 Packard Hawks were assembled. In 1958 a Packard Hawk cost $3,995. Today, a Schuco Packard Hawk in mint condition sells for $1,400. This sold gold reprint first appeared in Keystone Keynotes Vol. 24 #5 October 1992.
