It’s Only Water September 13th was a pretty gray day to be International Drive Your Studebaker Day (it was also Drive Your Model A Ford Day). Despite the rain, twelve intrepid members of Keystone in six Studebakers met at the Holiday Inn in Grantville, PA for the short trip over to the Hollywood Casino for their well-known buffet. All of our windshield wipers functioned…except for one on Don and Sue Mallory’s GT Hawk that went flying. Don was able to retrieve it and put it back where it belonged. I discovered two new leaks in the cowl of Grace (you know, our ’54 Commander Starliner) and will have to lubricate the defroster motor – what a racket it made. But then, our Studebakers have something our new cars don’t – vent windows. That’s how I kept the windshield clear enough to see where I was going. Notice in the accompanying photo the illegally-parked Avanti belonging to our retired Pennsylvania State Trooper, Ted Engle. In the interest of full disclosure, I asked Ted to park there so I could take photos of all the cars together; he moved it afterward. To be sure, all of our cars looked beautiful with the rain beading up and glistening on them. In attendance from left to right were Sue Mallory, Pat Engle, Suellen & Larry Wiest, June Sheaffer, Mary Moses, Diane Schlott, Jeff Sheaffer, Jack Herb, Ted Engle, and Don Mallory. (I took the picture, so I’m behind the camera.) I certainly hope the weather will be improved for our November business meeting at Hoss’s in Hummelstown on November 15th from Noon to 3:00 PM. Be sure to give Suellen Wiest a call (717 566-0400) a call to let her know you’ll be coming.

Here we go again! The summer of 2014 is behind us and winter is just around the corner. I hope it doesn’t get as cold as it was last winter. I wanted to do some things to my car, but it was just to cold to go out to the garage and work. It seems, the older I get the less I like the cold weather. I did work outside almost all last winter, but when I got home I wanted to stay in the house. Now that I am retired and not working much I can start on my car before it gets real cold. I don’t know how I managed to keep up with the things I needed to do at home and work full time. Our priorities seem to change as we get older. I used to like to go to car shows for the competition of winning a trophy. I’m getting to the point where I would rather go to shows where there are no trophy's or to cruise ins and have some good fellowship with the other people and promote Studebakers. Keystone’s August & September functions were great. In August we went to Rough & Tumble in Lancaster county. I had a great time and really enjoyed seeing all the steam powered equipment. I included some pictures in this issue. Be sure to check them out if you missed the meet. Afterwards we had a business meeting at Tom & Nancy’s home. In September we had our Fall Tour. I could only make it on Friday because it was a work weekend at hunting camp. Thanks to Larry & Ginni Michael for putting the great tour together. Friday after breakfast we visited Turbotville Auto Museum.. All the vehicles and memorabilia are top notch. It was worth seeing. Afterwards we traveled about 26 miles to the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport PA. We parked on the campus where the auto technology students could become familiar with Studebakers. They have a great program for students to learn auto restoration. It is a top of the line program. After eating a great meal in their restaurant run by their culinary department we got to tour the automotive facilities. We saw the classic cars they were restoring and they do fantastic work. I had to leave after visiting the college, but I was told that Saturday was another great day on the tour. I wish I could have been there. If you never been to one of our monthly functions you need to give it a try. We always have good fellowship and great food. ( us Studebaker people like to eat). Look for the Keystone Calendar in this issue for upcoming events. If you would like your Studebaker to appear on the cover of “Keynotes” please contact me and we will arrange it. Bob Dudeck is our cover artist and will need some good pictures of your car, and I will need a story to with it.

MEMBERSHIP NOTES AND NOW....FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.... (with apologies to Monty Python!) Being the Membership Director Keystone Region Chapter give me the opportunity to keep you up-to-date on what our membership is doing, and to alert you to upcoming events. The column this month includes some pictures from the past. Some you may recognize, some you may not. If you're a LONG-TIME Keystone Region Chapter member (back when it was just called Keystone Region), you might recognize the first two shots. If you do, drop me a note at the email address shown below and let me know where the photos were taken at:

The rest of these pictures should be familiar to some of you. This year we celebrate the 46th year of our chapter's formation at Raymond B Winter State Park in September 1968. I know some of the cars in these pictures are still in the possession of their original owners. Anyone you recognize? Yeah, we're a bit older, but the memories of that first meet are still fresh.

RAFFLE CAR REPORT Raffle car ticket sales are progressing at a steady pace. I am still in need of members to send in for tickets to sell for this years' car. Many of you that have sold tickets in previous years have not yet sent for tickets. Please advise me using the form in this Keynotes, or call me and I will send the requested number. Thank you to Jeff Sheaffer and his crew who were able to sell 32 tickets without benefit of the car being at the Strausstown event. Hershey will be over by the time most of the membership receives this issue, and I am hopeful that the weather will have cooperated and that sales will have been successful. Tom Phafler will again this year be taking the car to Reedsville, and I am certain he and his crew will do a great job. At the present time about 2000 tickets have been sold or taken by members for resale. The first ads are now going into Old Cars Weekly, and the Hemmings publications. Sales will now significantly ramp up. We still do not have an alternative if J.C. Taylor insurance does not continue to write our coverage. We are covered until the 2015 Studebaker York Swap Meet, but we must try to solve the problem before that time comes. I would still appreciate input if others have any thoughts. If not, it is my plan to continue the raffle next year, by selling tickets by mail or the internet only since we already have the 2016 car. That means we will no longer take it anywhere except the York meet for the drawing. Perhaps this is the end of a Keystone tradition. Time will tell, and hopefully things will all work out in a positive manner. I must again thank all those who have thus far made ticket sales a success. Many thanks also to Bob Sheaffer, Don Mallory, and Dick Whitehead for all their help in fixing a few minor mechanical problems with the ‘51, and transporting it to my home after the repairs were completed. Hopefully I will be going to Florida again this winter after my mom finishes cancer treatments at Hershey Medical Center in October. I look forward to another successful year with all of your help.

NOV 2014

THIS MONTHS COVER CAR By Denny Foust

The goal of a lifetime...

A long time ago, a spark of interest in Studebaker was planted in a Keystone Region Chapter member. It happened way back in the late 40's, when my Dad, the late Bob Foust, bought a new Studebaker, a 1952 Hardtop, as I remember. Those years are a bit foggy, as I was only about 5 years old at that time, but I remember Dad taking us to the races at Tipton Speedway, near Altoona, PA. This was a small dirt track that existed many years after the famous and short-lived board speedway existed there. I, along with my brother, Bob, was standing alongside the car as we waited for the long line of cars to find their way into the racetrack. That was my first memory of Studebakers that became a part of my life. A year or so later, I can remember a beautiful, new 1953 Studebaker Commander hardtop joining our family. I remember Dad saying he drove all over Western Pennsylvania trying to find one of these cars, and can still remember seeing it through the windows my grandfather's service garage. He had it there, shortly after he bought it to have it serviced "properly" for the many years we owned it. A beautiful shade of red, with a cream top, that car is still vivid in my mind. It was a beautiful car then, and remains a beautiful car now when I see one at a show. A number of years later, I've grown a bit, but my interest in Studebakers has grown. I guess I was about 14-15 years old, when I started reading Car Craft, Hot Rod, Rod and Custom magazines, along with some other long -forgotten titles, looking for those Studebakers. I was building plastic models of Studebaker and other cars and dreaming, soon, of owning my own car. A few things stand out about those years. I can remember being surprised how many Studebakers were being "hot-rodded" at that time. These hot-rod Studebakers were some of the most popular cars in the world if you were interested in making high-speed runs on the salt flats of Bonneville (they're still popular!), or in the case of the new Daytona International Speedway, they were the ticket for speed on the high banks in a division called Sportsman-Modified. I still remember seeing a newspaper my parents brought home from Daytona that showed the finishers of that race, and being amazed that so many Studebaker-bodied cars appeared in the results. Today, a Studebaker-bodied race car still holds a speed record in a race there. Studebakers sometimes appeared in the pages of Hot Rod Magazine. Hot Rod did not have color pages at that time, but many of their features were printed on green-tinted pages in the magazine. What impressed me then was how easy it seemed it was to put the new Chevrolet V-8 in a Studebaker to make it faster on the street. I soaked-up all those articles and wondered if I could ever do that with a Studebaker. For the most part, the cars they modified were coupes, not hardtops. I had no idea then why they chose coupes, except for the fact that they probably were not as popular as the hardtops. I just knew I had to have one....sometime. Roll forward a bunch of years.....the responsibilities of raising and educating two children take priority in Cindy's and my life. The interest is still there for a coupe, and I briefly own a nice '53 coupe missing an engine (perfect candidate), but I have nowhere to shelter it. It stays only a few months and I sell it. THIS MONTHS COVER CAR Now, roll forward a few more years, and an old acquaintance visits me at work and tells me he has spotted a Studebaker in a garage locally. He works for the power company and has spotted it in his travels through a neighborhood, and tells me it might be for sale. I get the address of the owner and stop by one afternoon to inquire about the car. Guess what? It's the car of my dreams.. a Studebaker coupe, this time a '54 Champion, and "YES" the car is for sale. "May I look at it?" I ask. "Of course" is her reply and we venture to the garage when it is stored. My heart sinks as I see furniture and box after box of "stuff" piled on it, around it and behind it. The car was pushed into a corner of the garage sometime after its last inspection in 1972, and it was just pure luck that the door was open the day my friend spotted it. The bumpers need chromed, the pot metal trim on it is shabby, and the seats are dry-rotted from years of storage, but I see the potential. Both sides of the car show the typical rust you expect on early Studebakers in the front fender area, and the furniture that has been stored on it and around it has given the car a lot of dents. IT HAS POTENTIAL! Can I pick the car up tomorrow? Well...that's where this all falls apart. She tells me I have to speak with her son, who lives in Washington, DC to complete the deal. He seldom comes home, and I spend the next 9+ years wondering if I'll ever get the car. I never stop thinking about it, but wonder if the elderly lady who has the car has died. Finally it gets the best of me and I go back to her house, unannounced, one morning. She meets me at the door, and says "Mr Foust, I've been thinking about calling you about the car" I ask "is it still for sale?", I ask, and just that quickly she says "Yes", and we complete the deal. I arrange for a rollback to pull the car out of the garage the next day, and quickly load it and head for home. Things move slowly for a few years, as parts come off, and the car goes to Figart's Auto Body shop. The proprietor, Stan Figart, attacks the rust on the fenders and then removes them to be finished. Hood, doors, rear fenders, deck lid all disappear into stream of work, and a beautiful, rust and dent-free body emerges. In the meantime, a Ford 9" rear goes under the car, A Turner disk brake kit is installed, a dual master cylinder is installed under the floor, and arrangements are made for a new interior, including a headliner, and carpets. Now, what to power it with? What else...that Chevrolet V-8 I've always dreamed of putting under the hood. A tip from a former dirt-track racers leads me to an inexpensive means to mount the Chevrolet engine right over the original Studebaker mounting location. I have a '65 Chevybaker 283 that's been gathering dust in the corner of the garage, and that's the engine that gets put in the car. I later learn it has a stuck valve from setting so long and we pull the engine.. More on that later. Block-hugger headers are purchased as I need clearance on the steering side of the engine, and I install the engine about 1/2" off-center to get the necessary steering clearance. I hook up a GM 700-R4 Automatic Overdrive transmission along with a new driveshaft, and add 3.51 gears in the rear axle, to make the car "cruise" down the road. The moment of truth is upon us, as I hook the original 6-cyl radiator to the engine, time it, and fire it up. The aforementioned stuck valve rears its ugly head. Now, what do I do?

THIS MONTHS COVER CAR GM has a heck of a deal on new engines. They deliver a new 290 HP, 350 CI engine to your door for $1,995 + tax, and I order one. Apple Chevrolet from York delivers it right to my door for free. My son, Neil and I spend the next month hooking everything up, and it runs...but, it's obvious the cooling system is not up to snuff. Now, what do I do? A new reproduction radiator is $300-500 minimum, but, there ought to be something else that can replace it. NOPE...because the top tank on the radiator tapers on the sides, nothing fits it. I spend the next 3-4 months researching until I find a 16" high aluminum radiator on Amazon for $149 that might work. With modifications to the radiator cradle and the bottom outlet, it does. Now, the car runs, but it leaks transmission fluid. We fix that with a $0.16 grommet that the local parts shop orders and we're on our way. Are you taking the car to Dover for the International Meet? Geez, never thought about that....but, yeah, I think I might. I enter the car in Class 9 (Modified, with Non-Studebaker engine), and score enough points to come home with a 1st place in Class. Now, that feels pretty good! I've had my eyes on just such a car ever since I was a teenager, but never quite reached the goal until now. It feels good to be judged by your peers as having a nice car. Now, I just have to put a few more miles on it. Hope to see you more this year in it!

KEYSTONE BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES FOR AUGUST 2014 OLD BUSINESS: The AACA museum in Hershey, Pa sent the club 24 admission tickets to the museum for our adoption of a Studebaker in the museum. After some discussion as to how to distribute these tickets, it was decided to give some away as door prizes at the Christmas banquet and some at the York Swap Meet. They expire June 30, 2015. The Studebaker National Museum gave our club 10 admissions tickets for our adoption of the two Avanti protypes. These tickets will be available at the November meeting. Alan will put a blurb in the next KEYNOTES. They will be given away in pairs. NEW BUSINESS: SDC has banners clubs can purchase and use when displaying their Studebakers as a group. The purpose is to keep the name Studebaker visible to the public. There are 4 different types available and if any are purchased by December 31, 2014, SDC will give a rebate. Alan suggested that the club purchase the 3 x 6 banner and 2 feather banners. The cost with rebate will be $235. A motion was made by Denny and seconded by Gaye Liddick to purchase the 3 x 6 banner, which will display the club name, and the 2 feather banners. Motion passed. Denny will call and order them asking if we can have, at least, the feather banners by the fall tour. Larry Michael reported that he has seen 2 Studebaker cars that are in dry storage and have been for about 25 years. One is restorable and one is not. If interested, contact Larry. Denny reported that a number of past members have not renewed their membership. He suggested that we offer them a 2-year membership for $20 to have them back. Ted Engle made a motion that this offer be made through constant contact. A second by Gary Firce. Motion passed. The maintenance of the Studebaker Monument is falling short. It was suggested that we might consider asking Tyrone County if they would consider taking over the maintenance in the summer. We could offer to provide an escrow account to help pay for the maintenance. Denny will contact Frank Thomas. Denny, Wilbur and Gaye will proceed finding a solution. Discussion followed. Alan spoke about how our Studebakers being on display at the Rough and Tumble steam show brought young people and children over to look at them. The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm on a motion by Gaye and a second by Pat Engle. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Pfahler, Secretary

DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER DAY 2014 Some Keystone members traveled to the Hollywood Casino in Grantville Pa. on “DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER DAY”. Even though the weather was not the best we braved the rain and enjoyed a great buffet at the casino.

We were tour masters for the Ontelaunee Region AACA’s annual two day tour. This year we toured first to Columbia and experienced the Turkey Hill experience, toured the National Watch and Clock Museum, spent the night in Paradise at the Best Western Revere Inn and Suites, and saw the show at the Rainbow Dinner Theatre called Drinking Habits. On Sunday morning, after enjoying a buffet at Miller’s Smorgasbord we toured up to the Renaissance Faire. The Studebaker preformed perfectly and all 16 of the members on the tour said that they had a great time. THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti

Hawk 1962 Lark The first time I saw the 1962 Lark I was stunned. As a 13 year old it looked like a totally redesigned car. The new rear fenders made the Lark look gorgeous. Who knew that six years later I would own one? In the meantime, as an individual too young to drive there were several 1962 Lark miniatures to own. Hawk Model Company made two of them. Hawk Models go back to 1928. Dick and Phil Mates formed the company in Chicago, Illinois. They were brothers. From its inception to the early 1950s the firm manufactured wooden aircraft models. The Mates brothers displayed built-up and painted models at the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair. Hawk supplied identification models of planes for military training during World War II. The company produced the first all plastic model kit in 1946. This was the Curtis R3C-1 racer. By the time the 1962 Lark kits were offered, Hawk had a wide variety of realistic scale replicas. Subject matter included aircrafts, ships, missiles, and vehicles. Beginning in 1963 Hawk offered the “Weird-Ohs-Car-Ichy-Tures. These were caricatures of hot rods and dragsters. They looked like something out of MAD magazine. Surprisingly, these oddball kits were Hawk’s best selling lines. There were two 1962 Lark kits. One was a hardtop and the other was a convertible. Both were 1:32scale. The parts were very realistic looking. Unfortunately, there were many parts. This was great for a skilled builder, but not for a beginner. There was one instruction sheet used for both the hardtop and the convertible. Unlike other model kits that are stationary, the Hawk Larks could move. The tires turned. In fact, the finished kit could move without requiring batteries. As noted on the box, this was because of “Hawk’s new torque reaction drive.” Actually, this was nothing more than a wound up rubber band! The Testors Corporation purchased Hawk in 1970. This firm makes model glue and kits. The Hawk product line was then sold to J. Lloyd International. Hawk has been a part of Round 2 model kits of South Bend, Indiana since 2013.

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti

Arcade Studebaker Ice Truck Here is a toy that younger generations would not understand. Sure, they would know it is a truck. But they would have no clue why the word “ice” is painted on the truck. It would have to be explained to them that before there were refrigerators run by electricity, there were boxes that stored perishables. They were kept cool by ice. Hence, the cube or rectangular food storage units were called an “ice box”. The ice was delivered to houses by trucks. Today, it seems primitive, but was state of the art at the time. Arcade made a miniature of the cab-over-engine 1938 Studebaker ice truck. The body was iron, with a nickel grille, and rubber tires. The toy was 6¾ inches in length. Like many other toy companies, Arcade began manufacturing other products than toys. Edward and Charles Morgan started it in 1868. They were brothers who called their company the Novelty Iron Works. They made spring door hinges, cork extractors, coffee grinders, and other household items. The firm was reorganized and renamed the Arcade Manufacturing Company. The company was located in the Arcade section of Freeport, Illinois, and took its name from that location. Charles left, but Edward remained. His new partner’s name was Albert Baumgarten. Arcade made its first toy in 1908. This was a cast iron bank. These banks were in the shape of a horse in various poses. Then came a lion, seal, pig, buffalo, cow, rhinoceros, and even a rat. In 1910, the banks were also made to look like a safe, a clock, and a mailbox. The first Arcade vehicle came in 1921. It was a miniature cast iron Yellow Taxi Cab. This was not a generic taxi painted yellow. It was a replica of the Yellow automobile. Just as Checker was a brand that concentrated on making taxi cabs, Yellow was a brand that only specialized in taxi cabs. It proved so popular that Arcade began to make more toy cars and trucks. Arcade is said to have made the first farm toy in 1922. This was a miniature Fordson tractor. The driver looked like Henry Ford. In 1923, Arcade began to make toys for girls. The first toy was a food chopper. The next item was a toy stove and then a dollhouse. One of Arcade’s famous toys is a replica of the buses used at the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair. This was a GMC bus that had Greyhound logos on it. Toy production ended when Arcade made military goods during World War II. The company was sold to Rockwell Manufacturing in 1945.

Goodee Studebaker

Take a step-down Hudson and a 1953 Studebaker. Meld them together. What do you get? There are two answers. One answer is a 1954 Starliner proposal that was created by Phil Wright who designed the 1952 Aero Willys. His rendering can be seen on page 76 of Richard Langworth’s book Studebaker: The Postwar Years. The second answer is a “Goodee” die cast toy 1953 Studebaker two-door sedan. Goodee toys were similar in construction, style, and workmanship to Tootsie toys. Headlights, grilles, bumpers, and chrome accent lines are molded into one piece of metal. The wheels are solid rubber, and are attached to the body by axles. Because of this arrangement there are no front wheel openings on the Goodee Studebaker. Instead, there are front “skirts” similar to the late 40s and early 50s Nash. There is no interior, and windows are hole openings. Goodee Studebakers were three inches long, and came in a variety of colors. Goodee toys were made in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Other 1953 marques replicated by this firm included the following: Cadillac convertible, DeSoto station wagon, Ford police car, Ford fire chief car, and Lincoln hardtop. Because the Goodee Studebaker is crude, one could easily and unintentionally overlook it at a toy show. The saving grace is that unmistakable sloping hood. The author was pleasantly surprised to find out that he has a Goodee Studebaker. He was removing his old toys from his parents’ attic to his own house, when he accidentally discovered it. What was once a child’s unimportant toy is now a prized possession on a display shelf.
