My Trip to the 50th Annual Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet, Dover Downs, Delaware I took our raffle car to the meet in Delaware on July 1st. The ’51 Land Cruiser could cruise all day at 70 MPH, though I generally obeyed the posted speed limits (plus 5 MPH to keep from getting run over by a dump truck). If you haven’t bought your raffle car tickets yet, don’t delay. The car was quite popular at the meet, and while I didn’t make an exact count of how many we sold, it was over 100 (and that was only over two and a half days). I want to thank Bruccie and Danny Lindamood of Edinburg, VA for helping sell tickets on Wednesday. That’s Bruccie sitting next to me, and Danny took the photo as she sold a ticket to a woman from Canada. The weather was hot, but we were fortunate to be located under the portico of the hotel in the shade (right next to a fully restored Weasel!). While I went to the meet to sell tickets, there was one meeting that I needed to attend – the one for chapter presidents and officers. We learned that new to the Forum is Chapter Support. You’ll find it under the SDC-Specific Boards header. There are sub-sections for chapter presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries, treasurers, chapter membership chair, and activities (equivalent to our Tour Master). This is the place to meet other chapter officers to exchange ideas, discuss issues, etc. SDC also has a new brochure titled Chapter Support which will be a good reference. Also introduced at the chapter presidents meeting is a chapter banner share cost program. We will be able to purchase a variety of banners from the Studebaker National Museum and when we (or any other chapter) submit the receipt to SDC, we’ll get a rebate. For instance, we can purchase a 3’ x 6’ SDC banner with our chapter name for $80 and get a $25 rebate. Other types of banners will be available, too, and they will be a great way for us to let people know who we are. During the meeting we were presented with an International Drive Your Studebaker Day (IDYSD) chapter participation packet. Some of you have gotten an email copy of it; I’ve passed my print copy on to Sue Mallory In it are myriad ideas for publicizing IDYSD – sample news releases, media alerts, ideas on planning chapter events, etc. This is the SDC’s concerted effort to help chapters educate the general public about our marque. Great things are happening on the national level, so watch Turning Wheels for additional information. Oh yes, I have one more thing to report: Keystone has adopted both Avanti prototypes at the Studebaker National Museum. In addition to receiving the official adoption papers, I also received ten complimentary tickets to the museum. I’ll be turning the tickets and adoption papers over to Nancy Pfahler. Let’s talk about what to do with the admission tickets at our next meeting on August 16th.

PS: Our car is back from the body shop looking as good as new.

EDITOR’S MESSAGE Editor’s E-Mail Address jeffsheaffer@comcast.net

Web Address www.sdckeystoneregion.com

My wife and I arrived at Dover Downs around 11:30 Wednesday morning. For the Studebaker International meet. All went well on the trip down. After talking to a few friends I started cleaning up my car for the show on Thursday. Thursday morning I woke up early and decided to take my car to the show field and finish cleaning the car. It had rained the night before so the car was all wet. I dried it off, but the dew was forming faster than I could wipe it off so I decided to do it a little later. Everything went fine for the concourse. After the show, we decided to run to the shopping center about a block away. We went back to the car after doing our shopping and the car wouldn’t start. I flagged down the security guard who was glad to give me a jump. The car started right up and ran good. After getting back to Dover Downs I shut it off and tried to start it. It would not start. The battery was only a week old so I figured it wasn't the problem. I jump started it again and went up the road to the Battery Warehouse. I had them check out the battery and the generator. The battery was good, but the generator was not putting out any power. We then went back to the hotel and talked to a few friends for advice. Tom Erhart said he would help me with it Friday morning. I talked to some club members from the Delmarva Peninsula Chapter SDC. He made a few phone calls and told me he would get me some help. A few minutes later I got a call from a gentleman named Ken Hopkins who said he was at my car and wanted to check it out. I went back to my car and opened the hood for him. He did a few checks and said he thought it was the generator, but didn’t have the right test equipment with him. He said he would return in the morning and check it out some more. Friday morning I got a phone call from Ken who said he was at my car, so I went out to meet him. Tom showed up about the same time I got to the car. Studebaker people are wonderful and always willing to help. We tested the generator and found out it was shot. Now I wasn’t sure what to do. There were only a few venders still set up and one just happened to have a 12 volt generator. I bought it and we installed it in the car and with a jump it started right up so I let it run for a while to charge the battery. It just so happened Ken rebuilds generators for a living. I gave him my generator to rebuild and he is going to call me when its done. I want to thank all the great Studebaker friends who helped me with this problem. Later we went to the barbeque and the car ran fine. We went to the awards banquet Friday night. I took a 2nd place with my Hawk, (Missed a first by 2 points). I also took a first place for the Keynotes, and also received the Eleanor Blume Award for outstanding art work and cover design. I think Bob Dudeck deserves that award for his great covers for the Keynotes. They did manage to spell my last name wrong though. We had a safe trip home on Saturday with no problems.

MEMBERSHIP NOTES Were you in Dover for the International Meet ? This year's International Meet in Dover, Delaware has passed and we look forward to 2015 and St Louis. Did you know Keystone Keynotes won an award for publication excellence at the International Meet again? Congratulations again, Mr. Editor, for a job well done! To see some of the events that took place at Dover, we suggest you check the Studebaker Drivers Club Forum: http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com The week-long meet this year had many in attendance from Keystone Region Chapter supporting the event. Watch for a full report on the 2014 International Meet along with class winners in an upcoming issue of Turning Wheels. Membership in Keystone Region Chapter remains just ovr 300 persons. In our chapter, membership is "family" membership, and not based on individual members. Our membership has remained strong throughout the years. If you have received the current issue of Turnning Wheels, and like to read about numbers, some interesting statistics about our national membership are presented there. The Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc, at the national level has some very creative marketing materials available to us to gain membership. They are also providing some very attractive rebates to buy these materials. Have you had your Studebaker out this year to a meet? We'll soon be reaching the time when leave fall and people think about cold weather again. Take the time to come out to one of our meets and enjoy the fun! I have finally had my '54 Studebaker (above) out this year to an International Meet. For the first time in 40+ years, it felt good to have it judged. Did you have an opportunity to look at your information in the Roster that was included with the last issue of Keystone Keynotes? Is your information correct? If it is not, please drop me a note and let me know of any corrections. As always, check our website for the most current news in our chapter. That’s it for right now‌.as always, drop me a note if you have membership changes or to

SEPT 2014

RAFFLE CAR REPORT Ticket sales continue, however are not too brisk at this time , due to the fact that we are not actively advertising, and the only major show was the International Meet in Delaware. My thanks to our President Alan Mende, for taking the car there and for selling 61 tickets. He was aided by Danny and Brucie Lindamood who sold 45 tickets. This was somewhat disappointing as we hoped to do considerably better. Perhaps the lack of buyers was due to the extreme heat or maybe folks were too busy with the other outstanding array of events available. Bob Sheaffer and Don Dimler will be again carrying the torch for sales at the Magungie Car show the first week of August, and hope to have as successful a time as last year. Strausstown, Hershey, and Reedsville still remain and then we will ramp up advertising in Old Cars Weekly, and Hemmings. As you know, we do already have next year's car--------,however, we have a rather serious problem that will have a devastating impact on the club. We have been advised that effective at the end of our policy year, J.C. Taylor will no longer insure us. They have stated that they will only be writing INDIVIDUAL policies. Since the club is not an individual, we do not qualify. I have polled several other insurers, both about Antique and standard insurance, and have, thus far, been unsuccessful in finding a policy. If we cannot find coverage, we will have to abandon this project. This will have a snowball effect on everything else in the club, since everything from the swap meet to the Keynotes, and all of our donations and recognition awards are basically supported or subsidized by this project. I am reaching out to the membership for input on perhaps another insurer. If you have someone other than J.C. Taylor, American Collectors, or State Farm, please call your agent and inquire as to whether they will insure a car owned by Keystone Region Chapter Inc., and not an individual. If they will please call me, or June Sheaffer, our treasurer, and advise. It will save June and I an awful lot of time and trouble trying to think of or find all the possible alternatives. Again, thanks to all for the help you continue to give me in this project. We are at this point about 30% sold out of tickets. Please if you want tickets for resale or for yourself, call me at 717-574-1529. That is now the only number to reach me. We have discontinued our Home phone and the 717-938-5845 number is disconnected. You may also mail the form in Keynotes. We will be in PA until about 10/20/14, so you may mail ticket requests directly to me at 1970 Valley Green Road, Etters, PA 17319, although anything sent to the Florida address will be forwarded here too.

THIS MONTHS COVER CAR By Jeff Sheaffer

1960 Studebaker Hawk

As far back as I can remember I liked older cars, I especially like the independent automobiles . I owned a ‘39 Packard 120 4 door sedan in 1970. (I wish I would have kept that one). I’m sure you’ve heard that story before. Then came reality, marriage, kids, job and all the things that go with it. I did manage to buy a 1953 Henry J but never got it running. Fast forward to 2002. I was looking on E-Bay for a Packard, when I came across a ‘60 Studebaker Hawk. The pictures were beautiful and it wasn’t too far from where we live. I bid on the car having never looked at it in person with 3 minutes to go on the auction and won the car. I went to pick up the car and was not disappointed at all. I drove it home cleaned it up, waxed it, and took it to a show the next weekend and won 1st place. I then ordered a copy of the build sheet from the Studebaker National Museum and was pleasantly surprised to find out it was an all numbers matching car with all the accessories on the build sheet. My car came equipped with a 289 cid v-8, Flight o matic transmission, tinted glass on all windows, undercoating, Twin traction, White sidewalls, Climatizer, Wheel disc, Electric windshield wipers and back up lights. The color is Sudan Beige. Final assembly date was 5-12-60. It was shipped to St. Joseph Mo. The only items that weren’t on the build sheet were the radio and antenna. They were either added later or dealer installed. In 1960 Studebaker produced 4,280 Hawks. They were all 289 cid V-8 engines, except for a few 259 V-8 and a few 6 cylinder all for export. I especially like the finned Hawks. (‘56 Golden Hawk and all 57-61 Hawks). I’ve put about 1500 miles a year on the car. It just turned 100,000 miles. I did have new bearing put in the lower part of the engine, that’s about the only major thing I have done to the car, although the generator went out while at the Dover International meet. ( I got second place for my car, missing 1st by 2 points). The car runs great, especially since I had radial tires installed. The bias ply tires that were on the car when I bought it looked great, but did not handle very well on the major roads. I love to take my car to shows, but I am getting to the point where I enjoy driving it more. After all, isn’t that what they are made for? It’s a pleasure to drive at highway speeds and gets thumbs up wherever I go. It always surprises me when some older people don’t know what a Studebaker is. Keep driving your Studebakers and promote the Studebaker brand. I want to Thank Bob Dudeck for coming up with the idea of putting Keystone members cars on the cover of the Keynotes. If you would like your car featured, please contact me at the address below. We will need some good Bob to draw your car and a story about your car for the Keynotes.

ORPHAN CAR TOUR 2014 WRITEUP by Jon Battle (540-364-1770) Fifty-five cars covered a 60-mile route through scenic portions of Maryland’s Baltimore and Harford Counties on June 7, 2014 as the 25th Orphan Car Tour once again hit the road. This year’s tour was given the title “The Harford Rural Ramble: Hayfields to Havre de Grace.” The cars – all but a two of them “orphans” (discontinued-make vehicles) 25 years old or older – embarked onto the tour at the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company north of Baltimore Md.,shortly after noon on Saturday. Each driver was given printed directions, and each car was released with ample headway ahead and behind it. The meandering route took the vehicles over scenic, rural back roads, through various state and county parks, to the day’s destination: American Legion Post 47 in Havre de Grace. There, at 5:15 P.M., 72 participants sat down to a pit barbecue served by the Legion in its open pavilion on the shore of the Susquehanna River near Chesapeake Bay. Blue skies prevailed, with temperatures ranging from 75 to 80 degrees. The route passed a number of historic and natural attractions at which participants could pause at their option: Eden Mill and Nature Center, Rocks State Park, the Conowingo Dam Visitor’s Center, and Susquehanna State Park, which features the Rock Run Grist Mill, Carter-Archer House, and the Steppingstone Farm Museum. The tour passed without incident, except for one car’s running out of gas and the loss of another car’s hubcap in a field. After dinner, various awards were given to participants who had distinguished themselves during the day. Oldest Car Award went to Gene Sauter of Ellicott City, for his 1937 Wolseley (a British make). Long Distance Award went to Jere and Carol Avenson, who drove their 1954 Packard a total of 285 miles to the tour from Chesapeake, Virginia. Runner-up was Tom Mancino who drove his 1981 DeLorean 192 miles from Clifton, N.J. Hard Luck Award went to Thomas Johnson of Chevy Chase, Md. for his temporary lack of fuel. As in past years, the printed driving directions had been sprinkled with a number of tricky questions about sights glimpsed along the route, designed to test participants’ observational skills. Those with the highest number of correct answers placed highest in the competition. First place was won by Bob and Phyllis Godwin from Jarrettsville, Md. and their passengers Aden and Pam Harvey. Second place went to Phyllis and John Cherry of Catonsville, Md. Third place was taken by Bob and Kathy Baer of College Park, Md. Honorable Mention went to Buster Zimmerman of Cascade, Md., and his passenger Melissa Cherry. Twenty “orphan” nameplates were represented in this year’s Orphan Tour: Studebaker (including Hawk and Avanti), 13 cars; Packard, 8; DeSoto, 6; AMC (Marlin, AMX, Hornet, Metropolitan), 6; Corvair, 4; Pontiac, 3; Hudson (including Jet), 3, Oldsmobile, 2. Marques represented by only one car each: Austin Healey, Checker, DeLorean, Edsel, Imperial, Mercury, Morris Minor, Nash, Plymouth, Triumph and Wolseley. Two “modern cars” were driven by drivers whose “orphans” weren’t in shape to drive the tour. (Three “staff cars”, all of them “orphans”, are included in the count.) Ross Miller laid out this year’s tour route, and devised the contest questions. Assisting at this KEYSTONE REGION CHAPTER INC.

year’s tour were Bill and Susan Johnson, Jon Battle and Tom Kenney. Harley Smith serves as Treasurer and Rich Miller runs the Tour’s website, www.orphancartour.com. The tour is run annually in different locations around the greater Washington-Baltimore region. Its purpose is to encourage the driving enjoyment of antique “orphan” cars and trucks: vehicles at least 25 years old which were produced either by now-defunct manufacturers or by the discontinued divisions of still-existing companies. It is sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Packards (a region of the Packard Club), The Keystone Region Chapter of the Studebaker Driver's Club (SDC), the Potomac Chapter of the SDC, Potomac Ramblers chapter of AMC Rambler Club, and the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club.

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti

Ideal’s Studebaker Talking Police Cars It is unmistakably a Studebaker toy. In fact, it looks like the 1954 Studebaker because the two grilles have teeth. However, nothing on the toy says “Studebaker”. The toy is Ideal’s talking police car. There are two versions. One is a generic police car and the other is a Dragnet police car. The Dragnet police car was based on the 1950s “Dragnet” television show staring Jack Webb as Sergeant Joe Friday. The box that this toy came in shows a photo of Jack Webb. The rest of the graphics are drawings. The generic police car box has drawings but no photograph. The Dragnet vehicle has black fenders, hood and trunk. The center is white. The generic police car is white and silver. The silver painted portion will remind some of Buick’s pontoon fenders from 1942. Both cars have a clear bubble top that is removable. Both toys are plastic and 14 inches long. Both came with a “Mobile Crime Laboratory”. Each car has a dashboard with removable phones. There are other items for police work. They are as small as one’s pinky. Each car comes with two pistols, two rifles, a Tommy gun, a camera, and binoculars. There is a larger battery operated flashlight that is attached to the bubble roof. The backseat includes a gun storage case. Behind the front and back seats is a table with a map. The map is a decal showing city streets. Both vehicles have a record playing talking device located inside the trunk. A manual crank on the trunk lid generates it. When operated the generic police car says: “Car 99. Car 99. Come in please. Go to 147 Broadway. Go to 147 Broadway. That is all.” The Dragnet car says: “Calling Sergeant Friday. Calling Sergeant Friday. Please dragnet for two escaped convicts. That is all.” Studebakers had distinctive designs. Can you imagine if the Ideal talking police car was based on any of today’s car brands? They all look alike. Thus, it would be impossible to say what marque the police car was. I met the actor Jack Webb. He introduced himself as Sergeant Saturday. I replied: “Sergeant Saturday! I thought your name was Sergeant Friday.” Jack Webb responded: “It was, but I overslept.”

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti

Conquest’s Studebaker Prototype Wagon Back in 1946 Studebaker made two experimental versions of station wagons based on the new 1947 “which way is it going?” body. One prototype used a conventional wood structure. The four doors were wood. The bottom tailgate was wood. The panel and window frame above the rear pontoon fenders were wood. The front of the car ahead of the windshield, pillars, roof, and rear pontoon fenders were metal. The Studebaker woodie had back seat passenger doors that were “suicide”. These are car doors that are hinged at its rear rather than at its front. During the „30s and „40s some cars came with suicide doors. At the time doors sometimes would pop open. Since there were no seat belts a passenger could fall out when a door accidentally opened. There was a greater chance of a person falling out with a rear hinged suicide door than with a front-hinged door. The airflow from the speeding car would push the door closed on a front-hinged door. In contrast, the air current would push the door opening wider on a suicide door. A spare tire hung outside on the woodie‟s tailgate. Because of the fat, hung-on pontoon fenders, the tailgate was narrow. Conquest has made a 1:43-scale die-cast replica of the Studebaker woodie experimental wagon. This model is highly detailed. The real prototype languished for years at the Studebaker proving grounds. It was saved and restored. This vehicle sometimes appears at Studebaker national meets. If you saw a photo of the real wagon and the Conquest model, you would be hard pressed to determine which one is the replica. That is how authentic the Conquest model is. Another Studebaker wagon prototype used plastic for much of the body. This “test mule” was also built in 1946 and had the sensational 1947 styling. This was probably the first attempt by a major automaker to use plastic in the production of an automobile body. This wagon was a two-door. The “B” and “C” pillars, as well as the roof were plastic. The “B” pillar looked similar to the “B” pillar of the 1947 Starlight. The panel and window frame after the passenger door was plastic. The front of the car ahead of the windshield, “A” pillars, and rear pontoon fenders were metal. No tire hung on the tailgate. Like the woodie, the partial plastic wagon had a narrow tailgate because of the pontoon fenders. Sadly, there is no miniature of the plastic wagon prototype.

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti

El Hawk Here is something for you HO train buffs. It will fit nicely on any train diorama. It is t he 1962 in 1:87 scale.

Gran Turismo Hawk

For such a tiny object El Hawk is right on the mark in proportion to its real counterpart. HO trains are realistic, but HO size cars often are not. El Hawk is an exception and looks real. By now you notice the unusual name. It is Spanish because this toy was manufactured in Spain first by Anguplas. When this firm went out of business, Eko, another Spanish company, made reissues of the original toy by Anguplas. El Hawk has a separate body and base plate. The plastic body is molded in one piece and includes bumpers, headlights, and grille as one unit. There are clear plastic windows but no interior. El Hawk comes in a variety of colors. Headlights, taillights, bumpers, and grille are painted silver. Tires are either all black or all white. El Hawk must have been great for elementary school boys tired of learning about fractions and pronouns in class. They could pretend their desktop was the Bonneville Salt Flats where 64 Studebakers filled pages in the United States Auto Club record books. And, more important, El Hawk was small enough to put up a sleeve, or hide in the desk before the teacher put 2 and 2 together that someone was not paying attention or doing independent seatwork. Your chances are better at finding El Hawk at old train fairs than at antique toy shows.

This solid gold reprint first appeared in the May 1989 issue of “Keystone Keynotes.
