In the Bleak Mid-Winter As I write this, we’re still a week away from Thanksgiving, but by the time you read it, we’ll be in the new year of 2014. I hope you all prepared your Studebakers for a long winter’s nap safe and snug in your garage, barn, or storage unit. The time for our annual planning meeting will soon be upon us, so if you haven’t made your reservations for lunch at the Midway Diner on January 12th, please contact Pat Engle at 717-834-3274. Then on February 8th, we’ll be holding our business meeting at a new venue – the Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Though I haven’t been there yet, I’m told that the Bayou Restaurant is a good place to eat in picturesque town. The cost is only $20.00 per person, and you can get more information from Joe Prechtel (410-477-8270) or Jim Laird (410-457-4833). At our November business meeting, we learned that there were only about 500 tickets left for our Avanti raffle car. There will be fewer now (if any), so if you still want tickets, you’d better act fast. I’m betting that we’ll be sold out by the time the York swap meet rolls around. Grace (AKA our 1954 Commander Starliner hardtop) received her 4th Preservation Award at the AACA Eastern Fall National Meet in Hershey. While there, I was contacted by an individual who volunteers at the America on Wheels Museum in Allentown, PA, inviting Grace to participate in a six-month exhibit of orphan cars. So between April and October of 2014, you won’t see me driving a Studebaker. You might see us in our 1930 Model A Ford Cabriolet convertible as it has a Studebaker connection. It has a grille bar from a 1920s era Studebaker. Take a look at Andy Beckman’s column in the November 2013 issue of Turning Wheels to see one on a 1923 Big Six Speedster. I’ll have to ask our Tourmaster if I can still get two points for attending Keystone events in the cabriolet while Grace is in the museum. Oh, and if you don’t recall what Grace looks like, purchase a 2014 calendar from Studebaker International; Grace is Miss October! I was quite surprised to be contacted by a person from the company that prints SI’s calendars asking if they could use a photo of our car. Yes, we’re in the middle of winter, but if the day is sunny and the roads are dry, take your Studebaker out for a drive. They love the exercise, and people always love to see and talk about the cars we love. Until next time,

Another year has come and gone. They seem to go quicker every year. I didn’t get everything done I wanted to this year, but then again I don’t work as fast as I used to. I just got back from a week at hunting camp in Potter County. I didn’t get a deer, but did get to see a bear the first morning of deer hunting. Now it’s time to relax get caught up on Studebaker stuff. It’s that time of year to put your Studebaker to rest and get it in shape for the season coming up. I want to do some work on my car this winter while its in the garage resting. I hope its not to cold to do some painting in the garage. The Keystone Chapter is having its planning meeting Jan 7th 2014 at the Midway diner in Bethel PA. Come out and join us for a great meal and help in planning our Studebaker adventures for the 2014 and beginning of 2015. If you know of and interesting place to visit please let us know. We are always looking for places to visit with our Studebaker family. Feb 8th is our business meeting at the Bayou restaurant in HAVRE de GRACE, MARYLAND . Don’t forget the Studebaker York Swap Meet, March 6,7, 8, at the York Fair Grounds. If your are looking for parts for your car or just want to come socialize with old friends, that’s the place to go. I will be having the Keystone consignment table again this year so if you have any Studebaker parts you want to get rid of, let me know and I will help you out. There will be a 10% fee to the Keystone club plus 6% PA sales tax, so price your parts accordingly. If you don’t need the parts,. Someone else may. Help keep our Studebakers on the road. There will be something there for all the family. Lets plan for a good year in 2014. Till then. Driving the past into the future

Membership Notes! Exciting news....just around the corner.....
In the next few months, Keystone Region Chapter will begin the delivery of Keystone Keynotes to your desktop. A number of our membership has been asking for this option, and we are ready to begin the process of giving you that option. Keystone Region, like everyone, has been seeing increasing postal rates. Along with that go requirements for bundling of our issues to permit faster processing through the US Postal Service. Is it helping? I'll let you be the judge of that... Our Editor of Keynotes, Jeff Sheaffer, has done a tremendous job of giving us an informative issue each time, but has not been able to use COLOR in the issues as he would like to. That will change with our Keystone Keynotes. As membership director of Keystone Region Chapter, I note adoption of ONLINE that 75% (or more!) of our members have email addresses. With the availability of an email address and access BY YOU to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP, such as Verizon, AOL, Earthlink, etc), you have a means for delivery of Keynotes. We're going to be testing the email we have on file for you t o send you a message for you to test and see if you can receive notification of the availability of Keynotes online. KEEP IN MIND....IF YOU DON'T
HAVE A COMPUTER OR ACCESS TO THE INTERNET, THIS DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR GETTING KEYNOTES IN THE MAIL. Delivery of Keynotes to you by the US Postal Service will continue,
even for those who are testing delivery via the Internet. Studebaker had a presence at Hershey AACA Fall Meet this year. The Studebaker Drivers Club, at the national level, sought and received spaces on the Red Field (spaces RSE15 & 16) to promote the national club along with the Studebaker National Museum. The weather was foul (rain), and although it put a damper on things, SDC has committed long-term to having a space there.
Membership dues renewal is due this month for 2014. On every issue of Keynotes, we show the expiration date for your membership of your mailing label. Please take a look now at your address label and note if your membership is expiring in December of this year. Membership renewal is quick and easy to accomplish ONLINE through the website, or by using the form in this issue. Unfortunately, we cannot mail membership reminders to your attention due to the cost of postage. Check your expiration date now, and renew it now if it expires in December of this year. We don't presently know if all of our members are receiving the email we send and the purpose of this mailing is to test if you can receive this email. RAFFLE CAR REPORT 2013 is now a memory, since this report is being written for the January 2014 issue of Keynotes! Probably so is the possibility to buy tickets for the 1963 Avanti. If you have not secured tickets for that car, you may try to call me, but since as I write this message on the 29th of November, with only about 400 tickets available, you will likely not be successful in purchasing them now. My sincere thanks to the many members who bought and sold tickets making this 2013 raffle another success. We now have tickets available for the 2015 raffle car, the gorgeous 1951 Black Land Cruiser, which is pictured on the back cover. There should also be pictures (many) on the web site www.sdckeystoneregion.com under raffle car 2015 heading. If you would like an early start on tickets for the 2015 car send me a note specifying tickets for resale for 2015 raffle car. On March 7-9 at the Studebaker York Swap Meet, we will again have our book sale and Chinese Auction With the proceeds going to the troops stationed in war zones. As in the past, we sent boxes of goodies to some of them. We ask for your help in donating books and nick-knacks, etc. Last year we sent two boxes to Afghanistan to one of our servicemen, who is a neighbor of a member of the Keystone Region Chapter. NOVEMBER 2013 BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES. The Keystone Region Chapter, Inc., of the Studebaker Drivers Club held a business meeting at Hoss’ Restaurant in Hummelstown, PA on Saturday, November 16, 2013. Following our meal, the meeting was called to order by President, Alan Mende, at 1:00 PM. Secretary-Nancy Pfahler Alan asked that we dispense with the reading of the minutes of the August 24th, 2013, meeting as these minutes were printed in the November issue of KEYNOTES. Dick Whitehead moved that we dispense with the reading of the minutes with corrections. First correction-Rob Reese and his wife provided the meal at the Easton Business meeting-not Alan Mende and his wife. Second correction-The minutes stated that Jewell Geouge was in the hospital. It should read Doug. The corrected minutes were seconded by Gaye Liddick. Motion carried. Treasurer: Ed Wenger Ed passed out copies of his report and then discussed it. The report included a financial report on the raffle car. Gordon has less than 500 tickets on this year’s car. As soon as theses tickets are sold, the club will begin selling tickets on the 2015 raffle car. Tom Pfahler gave Gordon credit for the idea to raise ticket prices to $10 and only sell a certain number. The raffle car has been very good to Keystone. Vince moved that the treasurer’s report be accepted. Neil Smith seconded the motion. Motion carried. COMMITTEE REPORTS; Membership: Denny Foust As of November 14, 2013, we have 306 members. He is accepting renewals now. You can renew on line, also. He noted that the name label on KEYNOTES has your renewal date. Denny will hold the Membership position for one more year. He will give it up in 2015. Denny thanked Ray Albert for putting the labels on the 60-70 first class KEYNOTES and taking them to the post office to be mailed. The Printer (DRS) is putting the labels on all the other issues and mailing them. He charges the club for putting on the labels. Ed suggested that the club only do first class. He feels that this would make DRS processing easier. KEYNOTES was put on-line a couple of months ago. He asked how many had seen it and if they felt it was easy to read and access. It was reported that it was. The newsletter can be printed off, but, right now, it would be in black and white. Alan spoke in favor of on-line KEYNOTES. A motion was made that for the next 6 months KEYNOTES be sent both by email as well as by the printed copy. Vince Habel seconded the motion. Motion carried. Editor: Jeff Sheaffer Jeff asked that all articles be sent to him, if possible, before the November 29th dead line. It makes it easier for him to work on the newsletter by spreading the work out over a longer period of time. Ed moved that bulk emails be sent through constant contact to remind members to renew their memberships and use this to send copies of KEYNOTES. Cost to the club is $15 a month. 500 emails can be sent out at a time. It was seconded by Pat Engle. Motion carried. Swap Meet: Scott Tanner. Gaye Liddick reported the contracts are done for the Swap Meet. The forms need to be submitted in January. Bob Sheaffer reported that there are vendors who have signed up and others are coming in. There was a discussion on costs. It was stated, again, that the swap meet is a service to Studebaker people. We are not doing this to make a profit. However, charges are going up every year. A good example is the cost to rent the buildings at the York Fairgrounds. Some prices may be needed to be raised in the near future.

NOVEMBER 2013 BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES. Tour Master: Tom Pfahler Al Hall spoke on the December 7th Christmas Banquet. We will eat at noon. He is accepting reservations today. He told us that Gloria Richard has contracted a 5-piece brass musical group to play for us. They will play for 40 minutes at a cost of $200. She asked if the club would also pay for their meals. The club will do that. Pat Engle spoke of the January 12th planning meeting. She said the price for the meal has gone up $2 from last year. She will submit the information to Jeff for the KEYNOTES and, also, to Denny to put on our website. Tom spoke on the February business meeting in Havre de Grace, MD, explaining how nice the restaurant and how delicious the food. He reminded everyone that when writing up information for events, to please remember to include the time the event will begin. He offered to review the write-ups before they are submitted to Jeff, if they could be sent to him by email. Humanitarian: In the absence of Irene Shoul it was reported by Alan that Jim Shoul has pneumonia but is improving. They will be going to Florida in December. Tommy Shoul is improving. They plan to be at the Christmas banquet. Denny and Cindy thanked everyone who sent cards and called their condolences on the death of Cindy’s dad. Nancy had an address for Bernadette Firce where she is in hospice. OLD BUSINESS: A motion that was put on hold several times was again brought to the forefront. A motion had been made and passed to give $5,000 to the National Wounded Warriors campaign. After much discussion, especially, on the percentage of the $5,000 that this campaign would actually pass on to wounded service members, it was noted that the PA Wounded Warrior campaign uses almost all of the donated money to help PA veterans. The club decided, on a motion made by Ed, to re-designate the $5,000 from the National Wounded Warrior Campaign to the PA Wounded Warrior Campaign. Cindy Foust seconded the motion. 39 voted yes. Two voted no. They felt that the amount was too high. (Cindy had originally brought this idea to the club, so this was a joint presentation by her and Ed.) Ed will invite Helen Sajer to our Christmas dinner to talk about the PA Wounded Warriors. Jeff was asked to submit an article into TURNING WHEELS. Denny recommended that the Humanitarian Committee meet before the next business meeting (February 2014) to study and make suggestions as to where our donations should go each year. NEW BUSINESS: There was discussion on the lack of enough people running for office. The by-laws say that we shall have two candidates for each office. This has been the case in a number of past elections. A motion was made to change Article V Section B as follows: In the event that the number of people nominated for election to each office equals the number to be elected to each office, the voting may be waived and those nominated will be confirmed as elected at the December Christmas banquet. This change will be printed in the January KEYNOTES and voted on at the February business meeting. Ed moved that we give free 1-year memberships to SDC and Keystone. We would begin with giving 10. A tab will be kept. It was seconded by Vince Habel. Discussion followed. Motion carried. One idea-when we meet people who own Studebakers but do not belong to SDC, we can offer them a free one year membership to both SDC and Keystone. Wilber spoke on the club brick that Keystone is buying from the Studebaker Museum. It will be placed in the garden. He showed a photo of our new logo and asked for comments. It was noted that the keystone, as is, may not look good engraved. It was asked that we check with the museum to see if the keystone can be made solid. Nancy will continue working with this. CANDIDATE FOR ATLANTIC ZONE DIRECTOR.
Larry Merhaut I have been a member of The Studebaker Drivers Club since 1986. In 1987, I joined the Potomac Chapter of SDC, becoming active in just about all of the facets of the club. In typical family traditions, my wife, Pat was very supportive of my involvement in the club. She was the bulletin (The Commander) editor for many years. I subsequently held club offices of President, Vice President, Activities Director, Membership Director and Secretary. I co-chaired two Atlantic Zone Meets and managed a third over a period of seven years. Pat and I thoroughly enjoyed owning and financing the complete restoration of a 1950 Champion Starlight Coupe. We owned that beautiful car, attending many International Meets over a 17 year period. It subsequently found a new home in Canada. Our current Studebaker is a beautiful 1962 Lark Regal Convertible. It has served us well. In fact, Pat and I participated in a caravan of seven Studes driving to and from California on what remains of good old Route 66. Our Lark performed flawlessly all of the 6,000 plus miles. We own what we believe to be one of the better collections of Studebaker memorabilia which consists of numerous Studebaker die cast models, photos, artist‟s prints and a wonderful assortment of 1:64 models. I have become interested in constructing Studebaker related dioramas. One is a 1:43 scale 1950 Vintage Dealership. I have just completed a 1960‟s vintage gas station 1:18 scale. Both are my pride and joy. In my “other” life, I was employed by Rockwell International Corporation for 26 years. I was a middle management marketing person selling Rockwell power tools (Porter-Cable), machinery (Delta) and other related products. I was also Regional Director of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in the late „70‟s. The Region covered five states and DC. The region was comprised of 6,000 members. As a result of corporate maneuvering, along with my wife Pat, we started our own business as a Manufacturers Representative selling power tools and machinery to the Federal Government. We retired from that wonderful experience after 22 years. I celebrate my 77th birthday on November 5, 2013. I believe I have the stamina and the tenacity to perform well and do the Studebaker Drivers Club proud.

Box 229, Concord, VA 24568-0229 434-609-7199 keydetsdj@aol.com Dear SDC Atlantic Zone member, I am writing you as candidate for the Atlantic Zone Director position on the Studebaker Drivers Club Board of Directors. In this position I will represent you as Director for the Atlantic Zone. I believe a new era is dawning within SDC, and now is the time to help it grow and prosper. At the Internationational Meet held in Colorado Springs CO this year, a new set of Bylaws was approved by the Board. One of the more important provisions of the bylaws was a limiting of the number of terms a Board Member could serve. That limit is now set at three consecutive two-year terms and then a new representative must be elected. This simply means there will now be regular change-over on the Board and new ideas as we move further into the 21st Century. I believe we must now focus our efforts to deal with the following: Since 2011 we have lost over 1,000 members Since August 2012 to August 2013 we lost 600 members Our total membership now stands at 11,289 as of August 31, 2013. I am sure there are many legitimate reasons for this, but I also believe we can reverse the trend by focusing our efforts on three specific areas: 1. New Member Growth 2. Retention 3. Reach back (meaning reaching out to those members of the past and urge them to rejoin the ranks of our more-dynamic club. As Atlantic Zone Director, I believe it will be my responsibility to assist your chapter in this effort, and as your Zone Director I plan on doing just that. I also believe that as Atlantic Zone Director, my responsibility is to represent your views and to communicate with you on a regular basis. I plan to do this by being readily available to you through either mail, email or by phone. As your Atlantic Zone Director, I also plan to write a column for your local chapter newsletter at least quarterly laying out the actions of the Board and also assisting your local chapter when asked to do so. I will also use the SDC Forum’s Atlantic Zone Talk page for blast emails. Voting this year will commence with the receipt of ballots in the January and February issues of Turning Wheels. This ballot will be the only document that will be eligible to be counted and it is designed to be mailed to the SDC VP. One exception is that you may also use the ballot that appears on the SDC website at www.sdc.org. Don Jones Bio Don joined SDC and Keystone Region Chapter in 1975 with the purchase of his first Studebaker, a 1956 Pickup. For a number of years, he moved about the country while remaining a member of SDC. In 1995 with the purchase of his first Avanti, that all changed, as Don became very active in Keystone Region Chapter while maintaining his SDC membership. In 1998 he was elected as Keystone’s Vice President and served two years in that position. In 2000 he was elected as Keystone’s President serving in that position for two years. Don also served as Keystone’s Historian for 15 years. After serving two years as the Keystone Region Chapter President, Don elected to run for the Avanti Owners Assoc. National Board and was elected to that Board in 2002. He served three consecutive terms on that Board, choosing not to run again in 2008. In 2009 Don ran for and was elected to the SDC position of Pennsylvania Regional Manager, a position he held for two consecutive two year terms. Due to his move to South Central Virginia, he chose not to run again in 2013. Don played an integral role in Keystone’s 2008 International Meet Committee serving as the Director of Public Relations, Concours Chairman, and as AOAI’s Meet Chairman and Host for the event. In 2011 he again chaired the AOAI International event in Gettysburg serving as co-chair of the Atlantic Zone Meet held at the same time. He currently is Chairman of the AOAI 2014 meet being held in Dover DE, being held in conjunction with the SDC's 50th anniversary meet. Don currently is a member of the SDC's International Meet Committee where he has played a role in returning International Meet Events to sound financial footing. He currently is a member of three local chapters including the Keystone Region, The Central Virginia Chapter and the Greater Virginia Chapter of the SDC In other classic and antique car related activities, Don served as Co-Vice Chair of the Exhibit Committee of the America On Wheels Museum,. He also is active in the AACA where served three years as a local Region President in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania and currently serves as editor of the monthly publication Hub and Spoke, produced for the Lynchburg Region AACA. He also served five years as Assistant Show Operations Manager and Operations Manager for the Concours d’ Elegance of the Eastern US, one of the country’s oldest Concours shows in the country. Don is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a BA in History. Upon graduation he served his country as a Regular US Army Officer for six years, including a tour in Southeast Asia. He entered the private sector in 1970 serving as a Territorial Manager managing 36 Service Stations for the Sun Oil Country. In mid-1972, Don began his own business as an Agent for the Nationwide Insurance Companies building agencies encompassing over 2500 policies. At the beginning of 1981 he opted to take his career into the ranks of Sales Management for Nationwide, serving in positions of increasing responsibility from local to national. Retiring in 1996, he took his career in a new direction accepting an assignment in Career Consulting and Marketing. In 2000, he and a business partner opened their own firm generating over $1,000,000 in revenue in just three years. They sold their firm to Mc Kinsey Scott Partners, Denver, Co., the country’s leading Career Consulting and Marketing firm where he remained until 2006 as Vice President Regional Manager of their Northeast Office generating and managing revenue in excess of $7,000,00. Since 2006 until his move to South Central Virginia, Don was the operations Manager for an Antique and Classic Car Restoration Shop where he also managed an on-line parts business. Don and his partner Diana now live in Appomattox County Virginia where he is an active volunteer at the Museum of the Confederacy and continues to pursue his love of history and preparing of articles on various national publications. Old Man Winter is comin’
Winter is coming. Without going through all the do’s and don’ts that most people should know by now, here are a few suggestions that folks may not necessarily remember: 1) If you flushed your cooling system, remember to run some antifreeze through the heater core. If you do not, it will freeze and the core will burst. 2) Remember, for all those of us with generators and distributors with “oilers,” now is the time to give them a squirt of oil. According to the shop manual, you are suppose to do this once a year or every 20,000 miles. 3) For those of you who have exposed type heater cores that will allow leaves and debris to enter, you need to keep them cleaned out so that air passage is not impeded. 4) Batteries take their toll in winter. Make sure yours is “topped off” with distilled water and fully charged. In addition, a) If your car had water leaks into the cab, take time to dry the carpets before storing the car for winter. b) Leave a slight gap between the glass on the doors and the frame to allow air to get into the car. If the side vents work and they have screens on them, they may be left open. The screens are necessary to keep mice from entering the car. c) Start and run engine periodically and operated until engine is at full operational temperature. While this is happening, pump on the brake pedal to move the pistons and cups in the master and wheel cylinders to prevent corrosion from actively taking place in the cylinders. Remember, what is happening inside the cylinders is not visible from the outside. d) If you are parking your car in an underground parking area where there are many cars coming and going throughout the course of the day, the exhaust from the cars will cause deterioration on your Stude’s chrome. The unburned carbon plus the moisture in the air creates acid to attack the chrome. You have a choice 1) Wipe the chrome chrome often to keep it clean, or 2) Apply a coating to protect the chrome. FLUID FILM, a bit messy but claims to be a rust and corrosion inhibitor and CRC also has a product that may be suitable. Wax or chrome wax will work. Some car collectors believe that fertilizer should not be stored in the garage with cars. They think that the presence of the fertilizer causes chrome to deteriorate. *************************************** A smile - - - A smile cost nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. - - - It takes but a moment but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it and none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it.

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti
30th Anniversary A big “thank you” goes out to all the readers and editors of Keystone Keynotes. Without your support The Toy Department would not be celebrating a 30th Anniversary. I would like to acknowledge several individuals who also helped to make this happen. The first person is Mike Margerum. I first met Mike at Hershey on October 8, 1983. He was selling raffle tickets for a Studebaker, and as editor of Keystone Keynotes Mike was giving out free copies. I asked if I could have a copy, and whether I could write an article for the publication about miniature Studebakers. Mike said “yes” to both requests. I thought I would be able to write three articles, at best, on Studebaker toys. I went to a Matchbox conference taking pictures of Studebaker miniatures on October 21, 1984. By happenstance, I met Gary Menkin. He realized that I was taking photos for Keystone Keynotes. He offered me an opportunity to take pictures of his vast Studebaker toy collection. Gary was also generous with sharing his information about Studebaker models. It is a miracle that Gary and I crossed paths. Without his help, I would not be writing about Studebaker toys thirty years later. Gary and his wife, Laney, were always gracious hosts when I came to take photos at their house. The third person to acknowledge is the late Bob Van Arsdale. When Bob was the editor he coined the term The Toy Department. I like to thank a former coworker by the name of Jean F. Dibbell. She would proofread the articles and correct my grammar and spellings errors. Luckily for me when she retired, I learned Word Perfect and had the spelling and grammar check tools available. It is a privilege to be able to write for Keystone Keynotes. The publication is the glue that keeps members together. I particularly like the fact that it is a family publication and children friendly. That is, one can leave Keystone Keynotes on the living room coffee table without hesitation for any age child to see.

THE TOY DEPARTMENT By Michael Petti
Corrections & Additions Before you read the first toy article that appeared 30 years ago, I have to correct some errors. I was not aware that there were Studebaker models before World War II. National Products made 1934 and 1935 Studebakers as well as a 1934 Studebaker platform truck. More specifically, the 1934 President four -door sedan came two ways. They either came with early style vertical hood louvers or later style horizontal louvers. For 1935 a President four-door sedan and a Land Cruiser fastback sedan were available. By the way, National Products also made a 1934 Graham model and a 1934 Terraplane model. All these models were pot metal. This was the same metal that was used in making pot stoves. s National Product made models of the 1949 Studebaker pickup and stake truck. This was not mentioned in the original article. Another correction is that Banthrico also made models of the 1953 and 1954 Studebaker Starliner in pot metal at the same time that AMT made the plastic versions. One might ask what is the difference between a toy and a model. Toys were not always exact images of a real car. In contrast, the models discussed here are accurate scale miniatures with intricate details. In the first article I forgot to mention that the assembled models were produced only in the year that the real cars were originally sold. National Product made the models from 1947 to 1949. AMT made the models from 1950 to 1956. JoHan made the models from 1959 to 1962, and the kits in 1961 & 1962. The reissued 1962 JoHan models were made by X-EL. The AMT and JoHan models were made of acetate plastic, which warps and distorts the model’s form as it ages. The X-EL models were made of cycolac, a non-warping plastic. However, the colors were not true Studebaker colors as were on the JoHan models. The National Product promos were 1:30-scale. In other words, 30 inches of a real car are contained within one inch of a model. The AMT and the Banthrico models were 1:25-scale while the JoHan models were 1:24-scale. Looking at this from another perspective, the National Products models were the smallest in size and the JoHan models were the largest in size. Let me fine tune things. Strictly speaking a promo was a model that was given to customers at auto dealers. Frictions were almost identical looking to a promo, and sold at toy stores. They had some kind of mechanism to have the toy move on its own for a short distance. The colors were not necessarily the colors found on real Studebakers in showrooms. KEYSTONE REGION CHAPTER INC.

National Product and Banthrico models were promos only. They often had dealer imprints on the roofs of their cars. I have a 1949 Studebaker with the dealer name, address, and telephone number on the roof. The AMT models from 1950 to 1956 were available each year as promos and as frictions. The JoHan models were considered promo/frictions. They were friction powered and the same item was available at a Studebaker dealer or a toy store. Although there were kits made by other manufacturers at the same time as the JoHan kits, they were not of the “promo/friction” scale. Likewise, they were not precisely detailed and proportioned as the JoHan kits. AMT also had assembled models that were remote control. These were 1950 to 1952 Studebakers. A long cloth covered wire connected the plastic remote control unit to the plastic miniature car. The remote control had a push button and switch that allowed the car to start, stop, and reverse. This model required two D-sized flashlight batteries.
For one year only AMT offered a “three car assembly kit”. These were unassembled promos of the 1953 Studebaker, Ford, and Pontiac that one put together. A more rare find is a kit featuring these same three cars with one remote control that could be attached to the Studebaker, Pontiac, or Ford. Long after Studebaker went out of business there have been numerous promo-like kits made by various manufacturers. These often come with miniature Studebaker engines. The original JoHan kits did not have a replicated engine. Today, a kit that does not have a replicated engine is known as a “curb side” model. When the article originally appeared assembled models were more valuable than kits. Now the opposite is true! An unassembled JoHan kit can cost a lot more than an assembled model. Promos are slightly more expensive than friction models. The remote control models tend to be priced similar to the friction models. KEYSTONE REGION CHAPTER INC.
