Our Organization Since its establishment in 1963, Bayards, as a local construction company which at that time specialized in aluminium welding, has evolved into a worldwide respected specialist in design, engineering, construction and installation of complex aluminium structures. Bayards continues to apply its know-how and craftsmanship to its original markets (ship building and transport), however the properties of aluminium (lightweight and climate resilient) lend themselves for many more applications in growing markets, such as the Oil and Gas industry and civil construction. Bayards’ portfolio includes prize winning architectonic projects, which have been designed by world-famous architects who recognize and appreciate the versatility of aluminium. For markets with very strict quality requirements, such as defence and high-tech, Bayards is able to offer customized aluminium solutions as an alternative to less versatile materials. Offshore Helidecks Weight limitations and high maintenance costs are the two main challenges the offshore industry is facing today. It is essential that offshore structures are high in strength but are low in weight and require minimal maintenance. Bayards designs, engineers, fabricates and installs helidecks for any type of vessel and platform. A helideck assembly kit can be delivered to the client’s yard anywhere in the world and thereafter assembled by a local workforce under Bayards’ supervision. Alternatively, we can assemble the helideck at Bayards’ production facilities and deliver it turn-key. Bayards’ designs are approved by DNV, BV, ABS and LRS and the helidecks are compliant with international standards, such as CAP 437, ICAO, NMD, NORMAM 27 and NORSOK.

Lightweight Helipads for Civil Applications Bayards’ rooftop helipads can be installed on any building, whether it is new or existing, low or high rise. No additional structural reinforcements are required due to the light weight of aluminium. Bayards’ helipads are maintenance free and can be supplied with stretcher ramps, walkways and staircases. The proposed operational support equipment, such as fire-fighting, lighting systems and heat tracing, is always configured in accordance with the latest safety regulations and the highest quality standards.

Royal London Hospital London - United Kingdom Located in the heart of London, at over 100 metres altitude, the helipad installed on the Royal London Hospital is one of our most prestigious showpieces. To facilitate fast access, the helipad has a perfectly designed walkway. Within less than 2 minutes, the trauma team is in the air, making the London Air Ambulance one of the most efficient Emergency Medical services in the world and in turn, one of our most appreciative supporters.

The Lord’s Media Centre (London-United Kingdom)
Nichols Bridgeway Chicago – United States of America The Nichols Bridgeway ceremoniously connects the Art Institute of Chicago with Millennium Park. This 200 metres long pedestrian bridge, designed to resemble the hull of a boat, provides an unprecedented physical link between these two civic icons. Bayards has supplied and installed the aluminium bridge, including a cutting edge heating system to prevent ice formation, thus ensuring accessibility all year round. Even in Chicago’s extreme climate, aluminium has demonstrated again to be an excellent construction material.

Palariccione Stairways Riccione-Italy ‘A combination of elegance and industrial use of aluminium’, according to the jury’s report of the ‘European aluminium Award 2008’ received by Bayards. In this project, Bayards was responsible for the design, engineering, construction and installation of all four aluminium external staircases of the conference centre, located in the Italian seaside town of Riccione. All staircases are sized differently and serve the purpose of secure and efficient transfer of large numbers of visitors between the various floors of the building.

Air Traffic Control Tower Barcelona - Spain Architect Bruce Fairbanks is the man behind the special design of the Barcelona Air Traffic Control Tower, in which a 43 metres high self-supporting aluminium staircase is integrated. Smart design An important design requirement of the architect was that the welds would not be visible. Specifically for this project, Bayards designed and produced aluminium sections, measuring up to 43 metres, that could be easily mounted on site in Barcelona, without any welding. The result is a beautiful example of how creativity in engineering and aesthetics can come together.

Sustainable Living on the Water IJburg District Amsterdam - The Netherlands To meet the housing demand in The Netherlands, the city of Amsterdam has created seven artificial islands on a big lake at the east side of the city. For this unique residential development project, Bayards has designed, fabricated and installed the entire footpath as well as the bridges that connect the islands to the mainland. The footpath covers a surface of over 2500 square metres and more than one kilometre of handrails, including lighting and deck piers.

The Most Prestigious Defence Products Because of its expertise and craftsmanship, Bayards is a recognized and appreciated partner in defence projects. Decompression tanks, mine-hunters, transport containers, canister frames for Patriots and several different types of girder bridges, are just a few examples of the products Bayards has completed for the defence industry. Bayards works in conformity with military standards, such as AQAP 2120.
Bayards has built over 400 aluminium chassis for the advanced armored reconnaissance vehicle ‘Fennek’, ordered by the Dutch and German Armies. The ‘Fennek’ consists of more than two thousand components, thus Bayards demonstrates that large serie production processes that are logistically challenging, can easily be accommodated. The light and strong properties of aluminium are fully compatible with the requirements for speed and maneuverability.

High-Tech Aluminium In exploration of all possibilities that aluminium has to offer, Bayards has maintained an ongoing collaboration with various research institutes as well as high-tech companies. Bayards’ extensive knowledge of the behavior of aluminium as well as on production technology has become a valuable asset within the high-tech industry. Our state-of-the-art machine park offers us the flexibility for a successful implementation of the most creative and innovative ideas.
CERN project, Switzerland Aluminium becomes stronger at very low temperatures. Bayards has made use of this property during the design and production of the bottom tray for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest and most powerful particle collider, which has been built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Measuring a staggering 27 kilometres in length, the particle accelerator works at absolute zero (-273° Celsius). While other materials become brittle at such low temperatures, aluminium only gets stronger. The application of special production techniques with precision equipment and ‘orbital’ welding (360 degrees around a pipe) were necessary in order to meet the highest quality requirements.

Lightweight Multi-Purpose Containers Bayards’ lightweight and maintenance-free containers can drastically reduce the fuel expenditures during their full lifecycle. The freedom in design offers many possibilities to adapt the containers to all means of transports as well as for all types of cargos. Bayards designs, engineers and can build tank containers, containers for bulk cargo, refrigerated and deepfreeze containers, flat racks and flatbeds. Our containers are tailored to the client’s specific requirements, and are also available as a standard version with the usual options, such as manholes, loading doors, butterfly valve outlets and handles.
Bayards’ lightweight aluminium containers are always in compliance with ISO, UIC-TIR, CSC and Lloyd’s.

Maintenance-Free Bridges One of the major challenges in building a new bridge or replacing an old one is finding a solution perfectly tailored to fit the existing landscape. Finding a complete and long-lasting solution requires creative thinking. Bayards has designed and built numerous aluminium bridges, both new constructions and bridge deck replacement systems. Aluminium has proved to be a very efficient and durable construction material: light, strong and minimal maintenance.

Floating Road Together with the Dutch research institute TNO, DHV, XX Architects and the Ministry of Transport, Bayards has developed the floating road, which can easily be placed on any water surface. The floating road consists of lightweight aluminium modules, fit for one way traffic with a speed of 80km/h. The floating road offers an immediate solution in situations when roads and bridges are temporarily inaccessible.

Friction Stir Welding Bayards has invested in one of the largest Friction Stir Welding installations available on the market today. Aluminium components are mechanically joined together without inclusions or impurities, maintaining the high strength value of the material unaltered.
State-of-the-Art Machine Park Due to continuous investments in the most advanced production technologies, Bayards is able to guarantee the highest accuracy and quality to the most critical and demanding industries. High Speed Milling With a HSM machine of 15 metres, Bayards has one of Europe’s largest, 5-axis, high speed and high precision gantry milling machines, which offers the highest degree of freedom in design.

Creativity in Engineering Bayards’ in-house engineering department perfectly knows how to make optimal use of the advantages of aluminium. Their vast experience along with their continuous education enables them to execute the most complex projects. Thanks to their creativity in engineering, each challenge is solved to the clients’ maximum satisfaction. Software The designs are made using CATIA V5, Inventor, Autocad and Tekla. Furthermore, stress calculation programs are available as: Staad Pro, Femap and Mathcad. Testing facilities Bayards has its own testing facilities for the required quality inspections, such as testing of the welds by use of X-ray, and vacuum leak detection by use of helium. This makes Bayards a reliable partner in sectors with stringent quality requirements, such as the high-tech and defence industry.
