lthough I don’t suffer from anxiety and depression, I have friends and family who do, so I know just how debilitating these conditions can be. What’s worrying is that anxiety is now more common than depression and is no respecter of age. It strikes young and old without mercy and is very difficult to deal with without good support and treatment. We explore the issue in Worried sick (p32), and I’d love to hear about your experiences of living with this illness. Autumn and winter can be hard on the hands if you do a lot outside. Last year, I really struggled to find a hand cream up to the job, but won’t this year after including hard-working products in our Tried and Tested feature this month (p43). October is also a great time to be looking up at the skies, so be inspired by our fascinating behind-the-scenes piece about the Royal Observatory Greenwich in Stars in their eyes (p26). From the heavens to the home, I’ll be heading to the kitchen for the latest creations food editor, Catherine Hill, has come up with in Classics with a twist (p70). Until next month!

MAKE THE MOST OF

October While autumn officially starts on 22 September in the northern hemisphere, it isn’t truly felt with all our senses until October with the spectacular colours of the turning leaves, the smell of wood and leaf fires, the fresher, cooler morning air and the sounds of crunching leaves underfoot. It’s a great month for spotting intricate spiders’ webs on frosty mornings, having a go at pumpkin carving, or admiring the skill of others, getting the casserole pot out and dusting off the pressure cooker ready to make the most of root veg and rich slow-cooked dishes. Halloween and ghostly events abound and charity fundraisers show no sign of abating, so pick what appeals to you and get involved. Especially as we all get an extra hour to enjoy on 29 October, when the clocks go back one hour at 2am. As LM Montgomery wrote in Anne of Green Gables, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” What’s not to love about October?

This month, dormice, hedgehogs, bats and queen bees prepare to hibernate for the winter. Hibernation is a state of inactivity and decreased metabolism, meaning body temperature drops and heart rate slows, as does breathing. This allows these creatures to save energy – surviving the winter months on the fat reserves they built up during summer. Dormice hibernate from October in an underground nest after having gorged on hazelnuts, buds and seeds as well as spiders and woodlice. When they emerge next April, they will be half the size they were. As nocturnal animals, they are hard to spot, and populations of the cute hazel dormouse are in decline. Local wildlife trusts are providing nest boxes to help increase numbers, and are encouraging wildlife enthusiasts to get involved. To create a nest box suitable for dormice, visit the People’s Trust for Endangered Species website. ptes.org CANDIS.CO.UK | OCTOBER 2017 9

Five minutes with... Lynda La Plante We chatted with the Liverpool-born author, screenwriter and actress to find out what’s on her horizon Your latest Jane Tennison book, Good Friday, Friday is set in the Seventies – was it fun to research that era? I’ve enjoyed finding out about 1970s’ London and talking to policemen and women who were serving at the time. The film Widows is due out next year. Are you excited? Very much! They filmed it in Chicago with Viola Davis and Liam Neeson. I have also rewritten and edited the original novel of Widows, which is out next year, too. Who is your favourite of the characters you’ve created? It has to be Jane Tennison – it is interesting to take her from a young WPC to DCI Tennison, the character portrayed on TV by Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect. Are we likely to see you acting again in the future? No, I have not acted in many years and I get too much enjoyment from writing. I love meeting readers at events and seeing their feedback through social media. What are you reading and watching at the moment? I watched Big Little Lies, which I thought was excellent – great performances by a very strong cast. I am reading Ripper by Patricia Cornwell; the amount of research she did is quite astonishing and it is a fascinating read. What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self? You’ll have success on stage and screen, but one day you’ll write a synopsis for a TV series. Make sure you send it to Verity Lambert at Euston Films. And don’t buy racehorses – invest in property! Good Friday (£18.99, Bonnier Zaffre) is out now

Unexpected twists and turns makes this gripping novel an ideal book club read.

Enjoy evenings on the sofa with the latest dramas – and a great night out with our film of the month

Our Girl, Series 3 BBC One Michelle Keegan is back as feisty army medic Lance Corporal Georgie Lane. We last saw her leaving fiancé Jamie at the altar while she and her ex, Elvis, foiled a bomb plot. With her love life still in turmoil, Georgie works in emergency disaster relief and her first mission is in Nepal in the aftermath of an earthquake. Luke Pasqualino and Ben Aldridge return as Elvis and Charles, joined by Shalom Brune-Franklin as Private Maisie Richards.

Lucifer, Series 3 Amazon Prime British actor Tom Ellis returns as the Devilturned-club owner Lucifer Morningstar in this US fantasy police drama. The ex-Lord of Hell is trying to discover who kidnapped him in the last series – and how he got his wings back. Meanwhile, new cop Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling, the young Superman in Smallville) seems to be charming Lucifer’s favourite LAPD detective, Chloe Decker.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2007, Imelda Staunton, her husband, Jim Carter, and their daughter, Bessie Carter, all appeared in BBC series Cranford. Staunton played gossip Octavia Pole, Carter was Captain Brown and Bessie was a maid.

FILM of the month

Finding Your Feet When snooty Sandra (Imelda Staunton) realises her husband of 40 years is having an affair with her best friend, she seeks the advice of her bohemian older sister, Bif (Celia Imrie), who lives on a council estate. Bif talks her sister into trying the community dance class and to everyone’s surprise she begins to enjoy herself and ‘find her feet’. This is a truly heart-warming comedy with a top cast that includes Timothy Spall, John Sessions, David Hayman and Joanna Lumley.

though I dropped out after two years. They were very loving and conscientious, and I’m still grateful to them for that.” She was born and raised in New York City, the daughter of photographer and computer consultant Christopher Danes and his artist and sculptor wife, Carla. They believed in letting both Claire and Asa, her older brother by seven years, develop according to their own individual needs. Something, she says laughing, that backfired on them in the case of the sports-mad Asa. “They tried not to impose their own personalities on us, and were comfortable with me keen to dance and act, as they understood it. But Asa was interested in sports which they had no clue about. They encouraged him, and dutifully took him to soccer practice, basketball games and athletic meets and stuff… but they really didn’t understand the sporting kind of life!” Meanwhile, Claire was most happily doing her own thing. A performer to her bones, she began studying dance at six, and by ten was taking acting classes at the renowned Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. “And I was probably the only person there who took it seriously,” she remembers

I remember doing things like trying to raise sense memories, to feel the wind or cold when it wasn’t there, and I remember trying so hard to do so. I don’t know if I ever really did feel it, but I really, really did try.” Obviously, the lessons have paid off – today, she is one of the most in demand actresses in Hollywood. But ask her if she ever intends to up sticks and move to Hollywood and the answer is an emphatic no. “I feel very much rooted in New York. I’m still surrounded by all of my oldest friends who predate any of this show business nonsense in my life. I’m in a book club with the friends I’ve had since I was a child. They’re not actresses

– they’re doing all sorts of different things professionally, and that kind of plugs me in to different parts of the world and different ways of thinking, which has been a real gift. They keep me sane, which is not easy for an actress. It helps that I feel so connected to the people in my personal life, which is a great balancer. I’m very lucky to have the friends I have.” She stops, and looks bashful. “And I married a very nice man, too,” she adds. “So I’ve been lucky there as well.” The very nice man is oh-soBritish actor Hugh Dancy – son of philosophy professor Jonathan Dancy, educated at Winchester College and Oxford, and best known on television for playing FBI profiler Will Graham in the TV series Hannibal. STARS IN THEIR EYES The Royal Observatory Greenwich has played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known as the location of the Prime Meridian, or Longitude 0º, which we know as Greenwich Mean Time. S

itting majestically on the green and pleasant upper reaches of Greenwich Park in south-east London is the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Its magnificent centrepiece is Flamsteed House, an elegant 17th century building designed by Sir Christopher Wren and where the original observatory once was sited. Just south of here lies the Astronomy Centre with its world-famous Peter Harrison Planetarium. Each year, more than three-quarters of a million visitors pore over paraphernalia relating to time, longitude and the oceans, and take photos of themselves astride the Prime Meridian. Curator of the Royal Observatory, Louise Devoy, says, “When the Observatory was founded in 1675 by Charles II, it was tasked with producing accurate star charts for navigation at sea. These were crucial at a time of emerging trade routes between Europe and Asia, Africa and the Americas.” Once navigation was sorted out, the focus moved on to questions of astronomy – how old are the stars? What are they made of? How far away are they? And these questions are precisely what many visitors still come to the Royal Observatory to find answers to for themselves.

FAMOUS FACE

The Shepherd 24-hour Gate Clock, set into the outside wall to the left of the Observatory gates, is controlled by a quartz mechanism inside the building. Installed in 1852, this beautiful clock was the first to show GMT – where the counting of the 24 hours of each day begins at midnight – directly to the public and was at the heart of Britain’s time system. GMT is the yearly average (or ‘mean’) of the time each day when the Sun crosses the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory. The Shepherd clock’s time was promptly sent by telegraph wires to London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Belfast and the USA. In terms of sending out accurate time to the public, it’s one of the most important clocks in history.

PUT THE FLAG OUT

Every morning, the Union Jack flag is hoisted to signal that the Observatory is about to open to the public. Here, Sandra Jupe, one of a team of supervisors tasked with the duty, is tying a knot in the flag rope with a little help from a visitor experience manager. ‘I’m not a nautical knotter, though,” she jokes. “I do it my way.” The flag is raised every day at 10am and is taken down when the Observatory closes at 5pm. LONGITUDE ZERO

Just inside the Observatory gates, cut into the cobbles, lies the Prime Meridian. This is the line that bisects the Earth from north to south pole, dividing it into eastern and western hemispheres. Visitors travel thousands of miles to stand astride the line founded in 1851 by the Astronomer Royal Sir George Airy. Engraved into the tiles on either side of the line are some of the countries it passes through from Greenwich, including France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Ashantiland Peninsula and Queen Maud Land in Antarctica.

MASTER TIMEPIECE

ROOM WITH A VIEW

Inside Flamsteed House is the beautiful Octagon Room, one of the few Christopher Wren-designed interiors still in existence. Visitors can look through a replica of a telescope that would have been used by the Astronomer Royal to observe the night sky, which is why the room has huge windows.

In the Time and Longitude gallery, Richard Dunn, Senior Curator of History of Science, winds up the John Harrison clocks. This particular clock, the H1, was made in 1735 and first went on a sea trial in 1736 to Lisbon and back. Harrison created the first sufficiently accurate clock (chronometer) to determine longitude at sea in 1773. The clocks are one of the Observatory’s biggest attractions, and are made of metals that don’t need any oiling.

A LIFE SCIENTIFIC

On the balcony outside the dome, curator Louise Devoy enthuses about the Observatory’s collection, “The instruments on display are really just the tip of the iceberg – we have about 3,000 astronomical components, anything from a giant 1890’s telescope to a tiny copper washer, and the majority are in storage.” In the 17th century, Greenwich had good visibility, but by the late 19th century, smoke and light pollution clouded the skies. Then electric railway lines were a disaster for the sensitive magnetic instruments. So, after the war, the Royal Observatory was moved to Herstmonceux in Sussex. 28 OCTOBER 2017 | CANDIS.CO.UK

INCREDIBLE INSTRUMENTS

Next to the Observatory is the Great Equatorial Telescope. Anna Rolls is oiling it – a job that’s done every six months, while on a ladder 20ft up in the air. At 28 inches in diameter, it’s the UK’s largest refractor, which means it uses lenses to collect light as opposed to mirrors. As Scientific Instruments Conservator, Anna looks after all metal objects, from ship’s engines to silverware. “A lot of my work is the instruments’ care and maintenance, lubricating and cleaning them.” Which includes cleaning pigeon droppings up after birds have flown into the dome! “In winter, we use this telescope for our Evening With the Stars events, so it’s important to keep it in good condition,” she says.

AROUND THE CLOCKS

In the Horology Workshop, curator Rory McEvoy is taking apart a clock so valuable he can’t put a price it. It’s a German piece from the 1580s, and he has laid out its innards, including four metal bears that decorate it, for renovation. He looks after all the clocks, “in an intellectual and, occasionally, physical capacity, like today,” he says. Part of the workshop is visible from the public area, but, the two clocks that gave the signal to BBC radio – the Greenwich Time signal, or the ‘pips’ still used to mark the hour – are not on display. Rory spends a fifth of his time in the Horology Workshop; the rest of the time he does research, writes articles and gives talks on horological techniques and conservation practice. STAR TURN

The bronze cone of the Planetarium is one of the single largest use of this metal in the world. A host of courses and talks take place at the site, led by Lead Astronomy Education Officer Radmila Topalovic. She has taught GCSE astronomy, creates workshops, lessons for schools and coaches teachers who, she says, “can be nervous about teaching the subject.” She adds, “We want to make astronomy accessible to everyone,” and cites Professor Brian Cox as a huge influence in popularising the subject.

Astronomer Tom Kerss sits behind a bank of digital equipment, creating the shows that thrill visitors to the Peter Harrison Planetarium. He spends two days a week here when the auditorium is off limits to the public, developing shows such as the popular Sky Tonight Live. “We can visualise and simulate the entire observable universe,” says Tom. “We’ve reproduced solar systems from sci-fi films like Alien, but mostly we focus on travelling round the real universe.” This year is Star Season at the Planetarium, with a focus on the Sun, while the Solar Superstorms show simulates what it might be like to go inside our closest star.

LIZ GREGG

OUT OF THIS WORLD

THE SKY AT NIGHT

The constellations, such as Aries, Taurus and Capricorn, are projected on to the Planetarium’s domed ceiling. Tom Kerss explains the reason constellations are named after animals – because, historically, astronomers looked for animal shapes in the night sky. Leo is one of the oldest, he says, adding, “Over 6,000 years ago, a lion in the sky was depicted by many cultures across the northern hemisphere because lions used to be the second most widely spread large mammal after humans.”

TIME BEAM

Want to find the Prime Meridian at night when in London? Look out for a powerful green laser projecting from the Observatory in a northerly direction across the city’s night sky.

Turmeric+ is in a different league

O

lympic physiotherapists and premier league football coaches are now recommending turmeric as the best way to keep the body’s joints in lifelong working order. Turmeric+ is being used to reduce the risk of inflammation caused by intensive training, and for treating damaged joints without exposing elite athletes to the problems caused by standard over-the-counter painkillers. The supplement has already been used by soccer stars from FC Barcelona and Athletico Bilbao, and is being tried out at Barcelona’s Olympic Training Centre as well as in other training centres in Britain and France. “We are always looking for something that's better than paracetamol or aspirin, which don't work very well and cause side

effects,’ says Francek Drobnic, head of research at the Barcelona centre. The powerful effect of the plant extract on joint health has also been welcomed by doctors, who are concerned people are risking their health because of long-term painkiller use. The rise of turmeric came about because many scientists noticed that populations with high intakes of turmeric as a curry spice have lower rates of arthritis and joint damage, and they began to investigate. The key element of turmeric called curcumin, comes from the underground stems of the turmeric plant. These stems called rhizomes, are boiled, dried and then ground up to produce the medicinal powder, which is also prized by Asian cooks for its unique peppery flavour.

Scientific studies found that turmeric works by interrupting the chemical pathways and signaling mechanisms involved in joint inflammation and arthritis. These same mechanisms are also being targeted by pharmaceutical companies racing to produce a much more expensive drug that does the same thing as turmeric. Until now it has been difficult to boost the body’s absorption of natural turmeric sufficiently for it to have a really rapid effect on the aches and pains that are symptoms of joint damage. That has all changed with the launch of Turmeric+, a formulation supported by Cambridge scientists that combines turmeric with another plant extract called soy lecithin. This combination which now has 22 published clinical research papers to confirm its effect, is 30 times better absorbed or ‘bioavailable,’ than natural turmeric alone. Longer term studies are expected to show that the Turmeric+ formulation is the most effective treatment for joint health currently available.

WAYS TO TACKLE ANXIETY Dr Michael Mantell says:

especially ‘shoulds, musts and oughts’ – the demands we make on ourselves to be perfect.

Learn to replace irrational core thoughts

with more rational, balanced, accurate, realistic, calming and positive statements.

4

Eat right. Avoid fried and salty food,

high-glycaemic carbs, refined sugars, caffeinated drinks and alcohol, which can amplify heart palpitations, dips in blood sugar etc. Instead, eat wholegrain foods, dark leafy greens, blueberries, almonds, milk, bananas and peanut butter.

6 The most common thoughts related to creating anxiety are ‘I must win the approval of others or else I am no good’, ‘Everyone should treat me kindly’ and ‘Life must be fair’. Let go of these thoughts.

3

Be physically active. Aerobic exercise

is good for your head as well as your heart. It lifts your spirits and calms you down, easing depression and anxiety.

5

Get more restorative sleep. Just before bed, do some deep

breathing and clear your mind. Be sure you’ve had enough physical activity early in the day (not right before bedtime), take a warm bath, keep your bedroom cool and dark and don’t use digital devices 30 minutes before bedtime.

7

Smile and laugh. The more you smile, the less anxious you’ll feel. Hearty laughter relieves physical tension and stress, and helps relax muscles. Research suggests when people see someone smiling, their own smile muscles cannot help but switch on too.

Grim and bear it Some people love Halloween – they relish the opportunity to hit Quidland and slap on a Scream mask, or to plan an elaborate party complete with themed food and games. But not I, explains LUCY SWEET

es, as you may have already guessed, I’m a Halloween Grinch. The whole thing makes me extremely stressed and anxious. Firstly, it’s about death. Secondly, it brings out the exhibitionists and the opportunists and the door knockers and children with terrible face paint. Thirdly, it invades your privacy at home and assaults your eyes when you’re out. Fourthly, there are so many things that can go wrong in general, aren’t there? Will you hack your hand to bits trying to hollow out a root vegetable with a blunt knife? Or will you open the door to find 12 hairy teenagers threatening you for Haribo and cigarettes? Even though this Americanised version of Halloween was once as welcome on our shores as rabies, it has continued to fester and grow and glom on to our culture like a wart on a witch’s chin. TRIED AND TESTED This month our testing panel put intensive hand creams, ready-made frostings and dashcams through their paces to find the best value product for your needs

Intensive hand creams m Hands bear the brunt of our day-to-day lives more

than any other part of our bodies. Exposed to the elements, they can easily become dry, cracked or sore. With the cold weather approaching, they may need extra protection to keep them in shape. Our testers from all walks of life – nurses, gardeners, chefs and eczema sufferers – tried out some of the most intensive hand nourishers around. See how they fared on page 44.

ready-made frostings m Whether you’re young or old, a cupcake isn’t a cupcake

unless it has frosting. And at this time of year, when cakes are in demand for school fairs, fundraisers and treats for kids, it makes sense to have a ready-made version on standby for the ‘Mum, I need to take cakes into school tomorrow’ late-night statement. Our tests discovered which are worth buying – see page 46.

Dashcams m Dashcams are becoming increasingly popular with drivers

as they can save a lot of time, stress and money if video footage can be produced as evidence after an accident. Some of the larger insurance companies even offer a discount if a goodquality dashcam (offering clear footage) is fitted to the vehicle. There are lots of models available and a basic one starts at £50. We put four brands through our rigorous testing for ease of use and value for money. If you’re considering investing in a personal road safety guardian, turn to page 48 for the results. CANDIS.CO.UK | OCTOBER 2017 43

TRIED AND TESTED

Application

Once applied

CONCLUSION

A strangely textured white, almost solid cream that melts into hands. Easy to work in, absorbed well, leaving a matt texture and no scent. Only a small amount needed.

Skin feels instantly soft. Absorbed so well that our testers felt able to do hair, make-up, prepare food and use a smartphone without worrying about residue. Testers’ hands were dry and quite cracked; with regular application, improvement was visible after 48 hours.

The unscented cream and utilitarian packaging appeals to men and women – especially those who are outside a lot or need to wash their hands often, such as nurses or kitchen staff. Excellent results and non-greasy.

Has an interesting, unisex, earthy smell. Lovely, thick and creamy texture. Just a pea-sized amount is needed for both hands.

A little oily to begin with but soaked in after about 10 minutes. Hands felt smooth and instantly moisturised. They continued to feel protected after more than one hand wash. Regular twice daily usage did result in softer, smoother skin.

A little goes a long way. Testers were split on the distinctive smell but overall found it natural and not overpowering. Long-lasting effect and reasonably priced. A good budget buy.

Rubbed in easily and had lovely fresh yet not overpowering smell. Quite rich in texture. Needed only a 5p-sized amount for both hands.

Skin felt silky to the touch and hydrated. However, hands retained a slightly greasy-moist feeling, which disappeared only after washing – when some testers said they’d normally add another application.

Good for very dry skin as high moisture levels made for instant hydration. Small, handbag-friendly tube. Probably better to use at night due to the greasier residue.

Testers either found the scent pleasant and reminiscent of holidays or felt that it was slightly synthetic. Nice, thick consistency.

Gave a good coverage and absorbed fairly well. Left a slight residue on a smartphone five minutes after application, but seemed to have absorbed after 15. Hands felt hydrated afterwards, but less so after washing hands.

Our testers liked that it was made almost totally from natural ingredients. Also great value for a good-sized tube – a little goes a long way. Moisturised well, with frequent applications.

Some testers weren’t sure about the scent. Gave instant and soothing relief to those with eczema patches. Skin felt nicely moisturised.

Cream was visible on skin but not greasy. Regular OUR D REA twice daily use FULL REVIEW saw itchiness at CAN DIS.CO.UK/ and redness reduced. dcreams

han

We used a mixture of testers with and without eczema and those with skin issues chose this product as their favourite. No stinging or irritation, very soothing and good for general use on moderately dry hands. Most expensive tested. CANDIS.CO.UK | OCTOBER 2017 45

TRIED AND TESTED

First impressions

Application

Taste and texture

The attractive packaging and handy nozzle (contained in the lid) makes this look like a quality, user-friendly product, as does the promised two-tone swirl effect.

Quite tough to squeeze out of the tube to begin with, though this got easier with each cupcake. It was a bright ‘bubble gum’ pink colour (with a white stripe) and the consistency looked smooth, even and swirls initially held thier shape. The smell was more strawberry than vanilla.

Despite initially holding its shape, it began to melt after ten minutes and after another ten minutes it looked droopy. First taste impressions were of a pleasant strawberry flavour, but some testers reported an unpleasant aftertaste. Most found more than one bite too sweet and sickly.

Packaged in a good-sized tub, this had a pleasant chocolatey smell upon opening. It looked rich and chocolate fudge-like with a smooth, dense texture.

Easy to scoop and pipe (using a sandwich bag), if a little sticky! The icing flowed well from the bag. One expert tester found it worked better if beaten in a bowl beforehand for an even smoother look. We liked the fact that unused frosting can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Sweet but with an authentic chocolate taste. Testers unanimously loved the texture and look of finished cupcakes, which held their form well, describing them as luxurious and professional yet still with a home-made feel. The best-tasting of all on test.

Packaged in tubs rather than pouches, no sooner have you opened the lids than the sweet scent of each is immediately apparent. Each a different yet pleasing shade of pale pink, the texture appears thick and mousse-like.

Testers used a sandwich bag to pipe frostings. Piping consistency was excellent and held its form well. Combined with the pretty colours, testers all felt they looked very professional!

Our testers were unanimous about the lovely light, airy texture, which meant it wasn’t too heavy or ‘claggy’ likesome others. Each duo had a distinct and identifiable taste. The delicate taste of candyfloss was a clear winner as some found the bubblegum flavour a bit too sweet.

This soft pouch is a good size A certain amount of strength was and comes with three needed to extract the frosting, shaped nozzles to give which, when it came out, was three piping effects, a pleasant cream colour. so is useful While it looked READ OUR if you don’t silky and smooth, have piping it also looked quite FULL REVIEW at equipment thin, and like it / .UK CAN DIS.CO at home. might melt quickly.

frosting

Sure enough, this frosting began to ‘wilt’ slightly after about 15 minutes, so frosted whirls looked a little soft. However, what it lacked in form, it made up for in its pleasant and ‘natural’ vanilla taste and smooth texture. Testers complimented it for its palatable flavour and lack of aftertaste. Ease of use

Footage quality

CONCLUSION

Clear instructions are included: plug the 12V adaptor into the cigarette lighter and off you go. Easy to navigate menus and settings. Has an extra-long lead which could be hidden around rubber surrounding windscreen for neater use. An easy-to-attach windscreen mount is included.

Impressive HD video quality with embedded time and date. It records on a loop and continually overwrites previous recordings, handy as you don’t have to delete unwanted footage from the SD card. Crucially, it will save footage if the G Sensor senses an accident has occurred.

Compact, uncomplicated, the perfect first dashcam. Downside: the micro SD card is not included so you need to buy a 32GB Class 10 micro memory card. Battery lasts around 30 mins unplugged, which might be an issue if phones are being recharged. However, it’s good quality and great value.

Has a concise quick-start guide. You set the time and date then just plug into a 12V cigarette lighter. The first dashcam to have a Powered Magnetic Click & Go car mount for easy installation, which testers really liked. Direct downloading of data to an iPhone is very user-friendly.

Excellent – very clear, day and night. We liked the GPS and G-force recording system, which tracks your location so you can watch your footage back with speed, location and G-force data shown alongside. It works on a loop, ensuring it is recording at all times.

We liked that this hi-tech, slimline model can easily be tucked away behind the rear-view mirror for unobtrusive use. It has great video quality. Downsides are you can download a video only into the app, not into your phone, and you need to buy a 32GB Class 10 micro memory card for it to work.

The menu system is easy to navigate. It was easy to position with the provided mount and ‘clip-on’ ball joint. The camera has no internal battery and must be plugged in all the time, via the 12V adaptor in the cigarette lighter – annoying if you need to charge your phone.

With 1080p HD and a wide-angle lens the video quality was great with lots of sharp detail. The optimised night-view function means the camera constantly adjusts itself to match the lighting outside, which ensured that the footage was clear even in low light.

The sound quality could be better and the settings in the clock are lost if the camera is not powered for more than five days. For the price, we feel it should have GPS and come with an SD card. We loved the wide-angle lens, however, and liked the option for one-touch emergency recording.

Pop in the 16GB micro SD card (supplied) and plug into the cigarette lighter for instant use. If you want to use the advanced driving assist features you need to go into the main menu to enable them to work, which isn’t difficult. Testers felt overall set-up was straightforward.

The video footage is crisp and clear in extreme HD. Can zoom into an image to capture a number plate. Lens is adjustable so you can obtain the best view of the directions on the satnav while filming the road – an amazing feature, not currently as standard in dashcams.

We like that this is a dashcam and satnav in one, especially as separate devices generally each need plugging in to a power point. We also liked that the built-in battery allows you to use it unplugged. The view of the road is excellent. It has numerous potentially life-saving features. CANDIS.CO.UK | OCTOBER 2017 49

G oing glam

Looking after three children leaves Katy with little time for styling her hair; a quick blast of the hairdryer and she’s out the door. Karine wanted to give Katy a glossy, youthful colour that’ll leave her hair looking fabulous with minimal effort, plus tips on achieving superstar style for nights out.

* KARINE GETS COLOUR CLEVER… After a quick skin analysis, Karine decides Katy’s cool skin tone lends itself to a creamy toffee all-over hue with soft beige pieces to add depth. Opting for fashionable balayage – a low-maintenance hand-painted colour technique that minimises obvious regrowth – Karine applies a toffee shade on the roots and then with beige balayage slices higher in the front to contour Katy’s face.

* A CUT ABOVE… Katy has exceptionally thick hair, so in order to reduce her blow-drying time Karine reduced the weight by cutting a ‘haircut within a haircut’. This technique helps to take hair out without creating too many lines. Removing 6in from the length made Katy’s hair more manageable and then shaping it away from the face highlighted her eyes and cheekbones.

Adding shine and depth to Katy’s thick hair with balayage “colour has given it an enviable celeb-style quality Karine ” * THE FINISHING TOUCH…

Prepping hair with OCS Thermal 2 Twenty to protect and add shine, Karine rough-dried the roots. Then, using a round brush, she blow-dried Katy’s hair in large loose curls for a red-carpet glam finish, advising Katy to invest in large-barrelled tongs to achieve similar results at home. Finally, to hold the look, a spritz of Elnett Flexible Hold Hairspray.

Adding oomph!

Overprocessing, neglecting trips to the hairdressers and the age-old complaint of not having enough time have left Lalita’s locks looking unloved. Karine injected a clever colour combo, a new cutting technique and some styling tricks to reveal a new look for Lalita with lift and life.

* KARINE GETS COLOUR CLEVER…

* A CUT ABOVE…

Lalita has very fine hair that, due to overbleaching, has become frazzled at the ends. To give her locks a lift and make them look fuller, Karine created alternating golden blonde and chestnut brown highlights. The contrast of the two shades gives Lalita’s fine hair a thicker appearance and the warm tones give her skin a fresh radiant glow.

Everything about this look was devised to reinstate volume with simple styling techniques and minimal effort. Using her latest cutting technique, which Karine named the MoMu for longer hair, she took 4in off the length to keep it solid and looking healthy, then the top was taken shorter in a brave disconnected layer to keep the thickness and make the hair look fuller.

* THE FINISHING TOUCH… Lalita has four children and a busy morning routine, so styling must be quick and simple. Fortunately, fine hair lends itself to speedy drying, so a quick spritz of Curl Memory spray on the roots gives an instantly fuller feel. Massaging the root area by blow-drying with the fingers creates a great foundation and root lift that holds all day. Using soft curl tongs from GHD, Karine created volume and explained that at home Lalita can add Velcro rollers to damp hair, allow it to cool and then finger-tease the style in place.

G olden girl

Although Liz was blonde in her 20s she felt being blonde belonged to a younger version of herself. Karine convinced her that a new golden blonde colour would be flattering and age-appropriate and when combined with a funky new cut Liz would be transformed back to her true rock-chic roots.

* A CUT ABOVE…

PERFECT PRODUCTS

Liz’s hair was cut into a short modern mullet, perfect for Liz as she wanted plenty of volume and shape around the face. As her hair is fine, Karine cut a short layer within the haircut around the widest point of the head to help to lift the top layer and give the illusion of thickness.

* THE FINISHING TOUCH… Karine worked OCS mousse mixed with a drop of argan oil evenly through the hair for shine and volume. She created lots of volume at the roots by drying with fingers and lifting away from the scalp, then pushing and drying all the hair forward. To finish she then teased the style into shape and held in place with a fine veil of lacquer.

Liz wanted to go from dark hair to a golden blonde. “It’s a big colour process and managing expectations is the most important thing to do as this shade is not always achievable,” said Karine. To bring Liz’s look up to date, Karine used a colour-meshing technique – where the roots are kept a different colour. Once the old colour was removed using a non-ammonia colour cleanser, Karine coloured the roots a dark golden blonde and a light golden blonde on the ends before meshing the shades together.

HEALTH NEWS Health editor Charlotte Haigh has all the latest medical research and advice to keep you and your family fighting fit

Full beam ahead for cancer treatment

F

or the first time in the UK, a machine has arrived that can deliver powerful proton beam therapy (PBT) to treat cancer. It will be housed at a unit opening in Manchester’s Christie Hospital in 2018, while University College Hospital London will offer PBT from 2020. At the moment, the NHS sends some patients abroad for PBT, normally to either the USA or Switzerland, at a cost of about £114,000 per patient. “This type of therapy delivers a powerful dose of radiation right inside the tumour,” says Dr Justine Alford, Cancer Research UK’s senior science information officer. “Unlike conventional radiotherapy, the radiation doesn’t go any further into the body, so there’s less risk of damaging healthy tissue. It’s safer for people whose tumours are near organs like the brain, or for children who are vulnerable to long-term side effects. It’s very good news that some cancer patients will be able to have it in the UK from next year. Offering the treatment here will help lower costs, reduce stress for patients and make it available to those who are too unwell to travel. Having PBT in the country will also

mean British researchers can find out more about who might be helped by this technology.” But, she explains, PBT isn’t the answer for all cancers. “Right now there isn’t evidence PBT benefits people with cancers that are normally and successfully treated with conventional radiotherapy, such as breast cancer or prostate cancer, but it is an exciting treatment option.”

IS IT BETTER TO… DO AEROBIC EXERCISE OR STRETCHES FOR A HEALTHY HEART? We’re often told cardiovascular exercise is the way to a healthier heart, but studies now show flexibility counts too. Research from both the University of North Texas and the National Institute of Health and Nutrition, Japan, found older people who were unable to touch their toes in a seated position may be at higher risk of a heart attack or stroke. Researchers think improving flexibility might help keep arteries more flexible, keeping blood pressure lower. Their advice? Aim for 150 minutes of aerobic activity plus simple stretches each week.

CANNABIS GUM FOR MS?

*SOURCE ASDA PHARMACY

THINKSTOCK, ISTOCK

Pharmaceutical company AXIM Biotech is developing a chewing gum containing cannabinoids to treat MS. The substances – derived from the cannabis plant – may help ease the pain linked with MS. The company hopes trials will be complete by 2019. If the studies show the medicine is safe and effective, registration of the gum as a treatment could happen soon after. So why a gum rather than pills? “The act of chewing encourages the release of reward hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. Gum also delivers a greater yield of the medicinal substances while reducing toxic metabolites,” says Dr George Anastassov, CEO at AXIM.

DID YOU KNOW?

FUTURE PROOF AGAINST BREAST CANCER A recent review of studies has found three key factors could help lower your risk of breast cancer. The first is to exercise regularly. Women with the highest amounts of daily activity – including housework and gardening – cut their risk by 13 per cent. However, scientists also found it’s important to stay active throughout the day rather than just having a single burst of activity. Avoiding alcohol is another key step – even one drink a day can slightly increase your risk factors. Finally, keep to a healthy weight – being overweight can also raise your risk. LOVES

WATER RETENTION Kate Taylor, from Lloyds Pharmacy, says, “Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, some blood pressure medication and hormone replacement drugs can all make water retention worse. M

any of us rely on home monitors to keep an eye on our blood pressure, but a small Canadian study suggests they may give the wrong reading seven times out of ten. So, should we still be using them? Yes, says Katharine Jenner, chief executive officer of Blood Pressure UK. “While the findings from the study are of potential concern, blood pressure is one of the most preventable and treatable conditions, but remains one of the leading causes of death. That’s why it’s extremely important to regularly check your blood pressure to minimise the risk of stroke and heart attack. Many people find using a home blood pressure monitor helps them feel more in control of their condition. It can also give your doctor or nurse a more complete picture of what your blood pressure is like from day to day. ” She advises making sure your device is clinically validated by the British and Irish Hypertension Society. “This means it has gone through a series of tests to make sure it gives results you can trust.”

Alison Cullen says, “The simplest way is to drink plenty of water. The body reacts to a lack of fluids by conserving water in your body. Aim for 1.5 litres of water daily. Potassium regulates fluid levels so eat fennel and celery to increase potassium and avoid caffeine, which drains it.”

“ I had to pull myself up the stairs”

T

hroughout my teenage years, my hips were painful and clicked when I walked. Once, during an exercise class at college, I was doing star jumps when my right hip gave way. I collapsed on the floor and could hardly walk. A chiropractor gave me some exercises, but the pain remained. By my 20s, I’d seen my GP a lot. Each time I was told I was too young to have osteoarthritis. Despite knowing the condition runs in my family – my mum had a hip replacement when she was 53 – they insisted arthritis was not hereditary and told me to take everyday painkillers when the pain became too much. I was in my mid-30s when I persuaded my doctor to send me to hospital for an X-ray. At Colchester Hospital I discovered I had osteoarthritis in both hips with moderate damage in my right hip, slight damage to the left and my right leg was 1cm longer than my left. A consultant hip surgeon recommended a hip replacement right away. But I felt hesitant

because my children were only young at the time and decided to soldier on. While I knew my mum’s hip surgery had changed her life, I also knew that new hip joints had a limited lifespan of around 15 years, so I thought I’d put it off as long as possible to save further surgery later on.

DID YOU KNOW? Arthritis is one of the oldest diseases known to humans and has even been discovered in the remains of people living more than 500,000 years ago My own research unearthed self-help groups and charities, which provided exercises to do at home. These helped at first, but nothing lasted. I tried heat packs and pain relief gels which rarely worked. Occasionally, I took ibuprofen when the pain got bad. I tried a

Tasmin McCulloch, 42, from Colchester, lived with osteoarthritis symptoms for more than ten years before she was diagnosed six-week acupuncture course after one of the charities suggested it and had three months with reduced pain, which was more manageable. However, my condition soon reached the point where I had to cling on to the banister to drag myself up stairs. Driving became difficult too. Every time I got in the car, I had to sit with my right leg sticking out, then lift it and swing it into the car. When I sat down, I was sticking my right leg out at an angle as that was less painful. And bending over to put my shoes on was impossible. When the children started fun activities like ice skating, I’d join in but couldn’t walk for two or three days afterwards. By last September I accepted the time had come and by February this year, I let my hip consultant book me in for the procedure. On the day, I was terrified but I knew I had no choice. The operation took one-and-half hours under general anaesthetic. The surgeon removed the existing hip joint as well as the upper part of my thigh bone. A

REAL plastic socket and hip joint was then fitted into the hollow in the pelvis. When I came round, I could see a 10-inch scar down the side of my hip. Initially, painkillers eased the pain, but once they wore off, I was pain-free for the first time in nearly 30 years. It felt amazing! My right leg with the new joint had been lengthened to reduce the chance of it dislocating. This made my right leg 3cm longer than my left one so I had to have built-up shoes made specially. I

life-changing. Whereas just walking was a painful challenge, I can now go swimming and I’ve joined a walking netball group. I’m also able to kneel on the floor to alter wedding dresses, although I sometimes have to heave myself up again by holding on to the furniture! I know I will need to have my left hip replaced in the near future but, after having gone through the operation once and reaping the benefits, I am far less anxious about it now.

OSTEOARTHRITIS

What is it? Arthritis causes pain and inflammation inside a joint. In osteoarthritis the cartilage becomes thinner and this change causes inflammation, which in turn causes pain and damage. Eventually the joint becomes stiff and hard to move.

It was hard to crouch down but I was given lots of gadgets at home to help. HEALTH

What are the symptoms?  Joints feel stiff, painful and difficult to move  Swelling, pain and discomfort around the joints  Pain varies from infrequent to intense  Joints can become knobbly around your bones forming bony lumps  Weakness and loss of muscle  Experiencing a limited range of movement in your joints. What causes it? Osteoarthritis is caused by several factors acting together. Previous injuries, a family history, a physically demanding job with repetative movements and lifestyle factors may play their part too.

How is it diagnosed? It is a potential disgnosis if you’re 50+, suffer joint pain that worsens with use, get joint stiffness for about 30 mins in mornings. X-rays and blood tests may rule out other causes, such as fractures. What treatments? Although no cure, it’s managed by regular and safe exercise, and keeping a healthy weight. Medication for pain-relief and topical gels can also be used. Where to go for help Arthritis Research UK has a video series of exercises to help people with joint pain moving. 6 WAYS TO

CUT DOWN ON SUGAR

Banish it from your diet for a healthier life

W

e know eating too much sugar isn’t good for us, but as it is highly addictive – some claim it is more addictive than cocaine – reducing the amount you eat needs a strategy. Too much sugar can lead to stubborn tummy fat, chronic fatigue, hormone imbalance, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Sugar interferes with immunity, putting our system on alert, which contributes to the development of

1

chronic inflammation, anxiety and depression. Over time, chronic inflammation makes your arteries more likely to collect plaque, which can lead to heart disease. Sugar also disrupts the natural balance of gut flora, as it’s the food of choice for bad bacteria. Health coach Fran McElwaine uses food as medicine to help her clients overcome chronic illness. Here, she reveals practical steps to wean yourself off sugar…

STOP BUYING PROCESSED AND PACKAGED FOODS. Most of the sugar we consume comes added to processed foods such as breakfast cereals, soups, sauces and baked goods, but it can also be found in the most unexpected places – processed meat, mayonnaise and cheese. If you only do one thing, cook everything from scratch and you will be well on the way to controlling your sugar intake.

EAT MORE GOOD FATS AND STOP EATING LOW-FAT FOODS. Low-fat foods usually contain sugar to make them taste nicer. Healthy fats from avocados, olives, coconuts, tree nuts and organic grass-fed animals keep our neural pathways – which allow our brain to communicate with our bodies – functioning, support our immuneboosting gut flora and help us manage cravings by staving off hunger.

3

Cut down on refined carbohydrates. Your body can’t tell the difference between white bread, white rice and sugar, so even if you don’t eat puddings or add sugar to food, your organs could still have too many sugars to deal with. Instead, eat wholegrain breads from ancient grains like rye and spelt instead of white bread, opt for brown rice and pasta and swap cakes and biscuits for fruit and nuts.

4

MANAGE YOUR CRAVINGS. While you wean yourself off a sugar dependency, cravings for sweet things or carbohydrates are normal. Manage them by having alternatives handy – a handful of nuts, a couple of dates, fresh fruit or small squares of 80 per cent dark chocolate will all help to stave off a craving. Buy, or make your own, protein balls too – the healthy fats and fibre help delay the release of natural sugars into your system, which makes them a healthier alternative to refined sugar and carbs. Gradually, as you consume less and less sugar, those cravings will fade.

5

EAT A VARIED DIET. Sugar cravings also come from depleted nutrition reserves. Boost the amount of nutrients in your body by eating as many different vegetables as possible. All the phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins in vegetables help stabilise blood sugar, which makes it easier to resist the urge to splurge on chocolate.

THINKSTOCK, ISTOCK

6

Drink more water. It’s surprisingly easy to misread thirst for hunger. By drinking at least eight large glasses of water a day, you’ll not only stay hydrated but you’ll flush out toxins, manage hunger pangs and beat cravings.

CATHERINE’S KITCHEN This month, food editor CATHERINE HILL brings you top tips for perfect profiteroles, great ideas to glam up your crumble plus some fab supermarket goodies…

Super crumbs!

O

ur recipe for chilli Scotch eggs on page 73 required more than a little research and experimentation! Once I’d mastered the timings for cooking the perfect boiled egg to go inside a Scotch egg, I experimented with Japanese panko breadcrumbs for a crispier coating. If you haven’t tried these miraculous, lighter-than-air dried breadcrumbs, it’s time to get your hands on them – especially now they’re in major supermarkets. Try using them for crumbing chicken, pork, aubergines – you name it. They’re even fabulous on top of gratins and baked pasta dishes. Because they’re so fine they have a wonderful crisp texture that creates a tight, light casing on ingredients that seems to prevent the oil from soaking in. My new favourite kitchen staple!

FROM YUMMY...

Three ways to turn your favourite crumble into a real showstopper…

Make a crumble mix by pulsing 80g plain flour and 50g butter in a blender. Stir in 50g each jumbo oats and demerara sugar and then crumble in 50g amaretti biscuits. Delicious over apple crumble. Sweeten cooked pears with the syrup from stem ginger and top with your favourite crumble topping pepped up with some extra chopped stem ginger. Serve your favourite apple crumble with a heavenly Calvados cream! Stir 2 tbsp icing sugar into 2 tbsp Calvados and fold through a pot of velvety-smooth clotted cream. Heaven!

Once boiling rapidly, turn off the heat and add the flour. 3 Using a wooden spoon, beat the mix until it comes away from the pan and forms a ball. Tip on to a plate, flatten out and let it cool for 10 minutes, or until just warm to the touch. 4 Return mix to the pan and beat in the eggs a tablespoonful at a time. Keep adding egg until the mix almost drops off the spoon. 5 Preheat the oven to 200ºC/R6 and lightly grease some baking sheets. Spoon teaspoon-sized rounds of the mixture on to the sheets. Use wet fingers to shape them into rounds if needed. 6 Bake for 20 minutes until golden and puffed up. Make a little hole in the bases with a knife tip. Return to the sheets, hole side up, and pop back in the oven for 5 minutes to crisp up. Once cool, open each ‘ball’ up a little and spoon the whipped cream inside. Place on a platter. 7 To make the sauce, place the cream and chocolate in a small saucepan and gently heat. Once melted, beat well and pour into a warm jug. Bright ideas There’s no need to consign the winter garden to dullness. Set aside a couple of weekends to plan and plant a few well-placed containers to reap the cheerful benefits of colourful pots in your garden or patio, says ANNE SWITHINBANK

N

ow is the time to clear away the remains of any summer bedding in pots, troughs and baskets that are starting to look tired and out of place against the rich opulence of autumn leaves and fruits. Refill containers with fresh plant stock for the autumn to winter period. The palette is more restricted, but small evergreens and a variety of weather-resistant pansies, polyanthus, dainty violas, fluffy bellis ‘Pomponette’ and

bulbs will bring smart outlines and a good spring show. Emptying and refilling a large number of containers with fresh compost can be costly, so can any of the old, root-filled mix be left behind and re-used? The previous occupants will have taken the nutrients, but I would say yes. Remove the top third, wet the rest and loosen it by chopping with a trowel. Add in a few controlled-release fertiliser granules (temperature will control their availability) and

top up with fresh compost, ideally half-and-half John Innes No 2 and a multipurpose mix with a little added potting grit. To avoid diseases, don’t repeat the same type of plants in used compost, so no whiskery-faced violas where summer pansies were growing. Plants like polyanthus and pansies demand good winter drainage, so place crocks to arch over the drainage holes or a layer of shingle in the base. Water needs a free escape, so raise containers on tiles,

JOBS FOR THE MONTH

THE KITCHEN GARDEN

THE FLOWER GARDEN Lift and divide large clumps of herbaceous perennials like doronicums, achillea, phlox and geraniums, setting smaller sections 30cm apart in groups or drifts.

Sort out summer-fruiting raspberry canes by pruning to ground level those that have fruited. For each plant, select six to eight new canes, tie them in and remove the rest. Plant garlic before the weather turns cold. In wetter areas, plant into mounds for better drainage. Set cloves of varieties like ‘Solent Wight’ just below the surface 15cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Apples are ready to pick when they come away easily, stalk attached, when gently lifted and twisted. Mid-season varieties keep well for a month or so, stored in a cool place.

Make a flowering lawn by planting short narcissus, such as ‘Jack Snipe’ and Crocus tommasinianus. In sandy soils, try Anemone pavonina, pavonina but soak the tubers first. Don’t cut grass until six weeks after flowering. Plant new herbaceous peonies into good, open soil, making sure not to bury the growing point more than an inch. This is also the best time to move peonies.

Trick of the trade:

IF IN DOUBT, HAVE IT OUT! Professional gardeners don’t take prisoners and are quick to grub out failing plants, so gardens stay fresh and beautiful for visitors. Never be scared to clear away roses permanently stricken with mildew, yellowing shrubs or inherited plants you don’t like. Dig and condition the soil before adding plants that suit your garden. 82 OCTOBER 2017 | CANDIS.CO.UK

LAND OF THE

Midnight Sun

As Finland celebrates its 100th anniversary of independence, there’s never been a better time to visit. LUCY HIGGINS heads to Helsinki to find out all the capital has to offer...

F

inland has a turbulent and interesting history. Pre-1907, the country was part of the Russian Empire, and before that was a part of Sweden. Now fully independent, the Finns are only too happy to celebrate their centenary year – and welcome visitors to join them. Concerts, festivals and special events are taking place throughout the country, so visit suomifinland100.fi to join locals in the ‘Finland 100’ celebrations right into 2018. Traditionally known as the Land of the Midnight Sun, you

could think a country as spread out as Finland might make exploring difficult, but getting around, especially in the major cities, is near flawless. Trams in Helsinki make travelling around the city a pleasure, and travelling further afield by train is stress free, offering stunning snow-covered vistas and a chance to see more remote parks and forests. When in Helsinki, however, you’ll be right in the thick of it, so take advantage of the city vibe and everything it has to offer. It’s a city with a rich history, and the Panorama

Sightseeing bus is a good way to discover the hotspots. English-speaking guides will drive you around, pointing out buildings of note and revealing fascinating facts – the country has almost 200,000 lakes, no payphones and even boasts a National Day of Failure – on October 13, if you’re interested! One of the city’s highlights is the Temppeliaukio Church (or, its easier-to-pronounce name, the Rock Church). Looking like an alien space ship that’s crash-landed into the ground, its bunker-like appearance

from outside belies the truly breathtaking interior where it’s light, airy and modern, and is saved from feeling claustrophobic thanks to the high ceilings and balconies. A pretty and peaceful place to visit, it’s also the home to free concerts throughout the year, and is a definite must-see for anyone with an interest in architecture or history. Whatever the weather, Finns love to embrace the great outdoors, and winter in Helsinki is no exception. The new outdoor swimming baths, which only opened

last year, are already one of the city’s most popular spots to while away an afternoon. With a floating cold seawater pool of 2˚C, and a steaming warm pool of 27˚C, you can choose whether you want your dip to be refreshing or warming. And if all else fails, to warm up, head to the three public saunas next to the pools. Finns know how to make the most of their beautiful country, and are only too proud to show it off to you, leaving holidaymakers feeling welcomed, inspired and, undoubtedly, impressed.

EXPLORING FURTHER AFIELD

Dine on the traditional

– and the not-so-traditional

Finland is fast becoming better known for its diverse food and, even more, its drink options. However, traditional Finnish or Scandinavian food is still the most popular, and with good reason. Reindeer is on most menus (try it as a steak, or even on pizza), as is fresh fish – don’t leave without trying salmon soup, a national delicacy often made lake-side on fires with salmon pulled straight from the water and added to a creamy veg broth. As for snacks, make sure you try a Karelian pasty. These savoury rye pastries, filled with rice and enjoyed with egg butter, are a favourite with locals and tourists alike. Cinnamon buns, known as pulla, are also plentiful across the city, either in cosy cafes or from market stalls in the many parks. As the world’s biggest drinkers of coffee per capita, make sure you wash them down with a black, filter coffee. Or take a tour around one of the many microbreweries and distilleries thriving around the country. Napue gin is made by a tiny distillery and has one notable difference – it’s made with rye. Winning first place in the Gin & Tonic category of the International Wine & Spirit Competition, it’s now a firm favourite throughout Finland. What better excuse to try it?

If there’s one place guaranteed to take your breath away, it’s KOLI NATIONAL PARK. About 500km east of Helsinki, it’s easily accessible by trains and shuttles, but is like stepping into another world. It’s one of the most southerly places from which to see the aurora borealis – the journey from the closest train station, Joensuu, affords the first glimpse of the breathtaking lights to lucky travellers. The trip gets even better as you reach the heart of Koli – Lake Pielinen stretches almost 5,000 square miles and is dotted with many islands. In winter, it is frozen and the purest, whitest snow covers every tree and mountainside. The only tracks are those of lynx and bears (both stay away from humans), or from someone skiing or hiking in snowshoes. The few hotels and cabins dotted across the park are well-equipped with cosy restaurants, toasty socks and glögi, a type of mulled wine, to keep you warm.

TAKE TO THE SEAS One of Helsinki’s selling points is its proximity to other countries. Sitting on the edge of the Gulf of Finland, it’s just a boat ride away from other cities. Cruise company Tallink Silja Line (tallinksilja. com) offers trips from Helsinki to Tallinn and Stockholm, as well as other Finnish cities – and thanks to a stop in Åland (a region of Finland that’s autonomous), the boats benefit from tax-free shops. The journeys are far from ‘booze cruises’ and more akin to five-star luxury cruises. There’s something special about boarding a ship in the evening, dining on superb seafood, or relaxing at the wine bar, then retiring to an expansive cabin, only to wake up to find yourself cruising through the archipelagos by sunrise. It’s surreal and simply stunning.

Running a B&B gets harder as online reviews become malicious. Colin wants to save the business – and his relationship – but at what cost? An exclusive short story by FIONA WALKER, author of The Love Letter and The Country Escape

Her round cheeks bore tear streaks, hurt morphing to self-blame as she garrotted the brass fittings, dislodging tiny shards of limescale. This level of deep cleaning meant just one thing. “Another bad review?” he asked with a sigh. “Awful.” “What did they complain about this time?” “A short and curly in the shower.” Tess couldn’t look at him, shame etched into her forehead, mortified that her fastidious eye had failed to spot the B&B owners’ nemesis. “Plus noisy pipes,

curdled milk on the welcome tray – it’s always fresh from the dairy – and they whinged about the mud on the drive.” “We’re a working farm – do they know how long I spend applying that mud to look authentic?” Once, Tess would have laughed, but the throaty burst of joy that Colin loved to hear rarely escaped her lips. He clicked the offending web page, which read, ‘Perry Farm Bed & Breakfast. One Star. Such a disappointment given its rating’. It was Perry Farm’s third one-star review this month, yet they had only catered for two guests so far. Colin might not have been a great mathematician, but he knew that it just didn’t add up, and he was certain who was behind it – Justin and Gaynor West from White Gates Guest

pump slowly into the underfloor heating system to refill it. The review sites soon teemed with complaints. ‘White Gables Guest House. One star. Terrible, terrible smell! NOT recommended. We had to leave early.’ The stench at White Gables worsened until it was beyond the help of scented candles. Eventually the Wests were forced to cancel every booking. Colin knew suspicion would eventually find him, but the longer it remained a mystery, the more righteous and noble he felt. Clever, joyful Tess would surely laugh again soon. But Tess didn’t laugh. White Gates’ downfall made her sad and frightened. She saw the Wests as allies in a bitter war waged against them both and their own reviews were getting worse, she pointed out. “Trying to cover up the smell of sour grapes,” Colin insisted, but his dark secret made him uneasy. Soon, another review appeared. ‘Perry Farm Bed & Breakfast. One Star. Freezing cold room. Terrible heating. Felt damp. The barns outside are eyesores. Such a disappointment given its rating.’ Cliff’s flashy car delivered a man on a mission. “I’ve just been to White Gates. Got my boys working there. Terrible mess. Insurance job. I told them, all sorts of nasty fungi can grow in those underfloor pipes if you don’t add a corrosion inhibitor.” The smile fixed on his older brother. Colin looked away. Cliff stepped closer, his voice lower. “The Wests have shut the guest house. Too many bad reviews. Such a disappointment given its rating.” Colin looked down at his boots, processing what his brother had just said. “Shame really because they were about to jack it in anyway,” Cliff went on. “Too much like hard work, they said. You and Tess should take

their lead. We can all make enough to see us good if we convert these old barns.” ‘Such a disappointment given its rating’. The truth finally hit Colin. His brother, who saw no future in small-scale dairy farming, knew that Perry Farm only survived through its paying guests and if it failed, he could redevelop its buildings. “You’re the one behind the bad reviews!” “No idea what you’re talking about,” Cliff blanked. “How could you do this?” he asked. “To Tess?” “I have to say I’m impressed. My best plumber would struggle to recommission a buried heating system that fast, let alone with milk in it. Didn’t think you had it in you.” Cliff said slyly. “What are you planning to do?” sighed Colin. “Milk it, Col. Milk it until you give in.” A new review emerged: ‘Perry Farm B&B. One Star. Mein host is a stubborn, grumpy sod. Such a disappointment given its rating.’ Later, Colin confessed his dark secret to Tess, and shared the truth behind his brother’s campaign. “I’m so ashamed. I’m sorry I let you down.” “Never.” Tess held his hands forgivingly in hers. “You’re a five-star husband. Always. You defended us as you thought best. Justin and Gaynor wanted out anyway. This is Cliff’s fault, not yours.” “What do we do now?” Tess opened her laptop and went online, Googling before starting to type. ‘CP Property Development. One star. Cliff Perry is a corrupt...’ Colin didn’t know much about computers, but he knew how to close the lid. “Some battles can’t be won with words, love,” he told her, a strange sense of empowerment coursing through him. “Let’s hitch up the muck spreader. It’s time to pay my little brother a visit and sling some real mud.” Oh, how Colin loved the deep, throaty burst of joy of his wife’s laughter filling the house for the first time in months. to us that although she was born with the virus, it has now gone so she’s not ‘sick’ at all and won’t degenerate. Everything she learns to do now will stay with her, she won’t lose the abilities she has, and although her progress may be very slow, she is improving, so the future is quite positive. I’ve learnt that when you’ve got a child with special needs, you should take every opportunity to make life that little bit easier for yourself and your family to take the pressure off. Four years ago, we admitted we needed some help caring for Ellie, for both her and Tom’s sake. We used some of the funding towards her care to pay for a part-time nanny, which meant that a few evenings a week someone else gets Ellie ready for bed and reads her a story, so Paul and I can spend time with Tom. Even if it’s just picking him up from sports practice, it makes such a difference not to have to take Ellie in the evenings after school when she’s tired. And that’s another reason why SeeAbility’s initiative has meant so much to our family. It has given us that little bit more time together, and nothing is more valuable than that.

This autumn, the charity will test its 1,000th child with learning disabilities, making the SeeAbility sight-testing programme the biggest global study of its kind. 

Tom came along to hospital appointments when he was younger, he’s so patient and supportive and never once complained. Ellie’s condition also means we’re very restricted on where we can go for holidays and family days out. My husband, Paul, and I don’t just worry about Ellie, but also about not being able to spend as much quality time with Tom as we would like. We’ve been lucky enough to get a place for Ellie at Perseid School in Surrey, which specialises in teaching children with learning difficulties and complex medical needs, but a typical hospital appointment usually takes half a day out of school time, which means her attendance isn’t good. Last year, she had a lot of time off when her weight dropped dangerously low and we had to prioritise her feeding issues. This meant that the non-urgent appointments then had to be postponed, a cycle that we repeat quite often due to Ellie’s complex condition. So we were delighted when, in 2013, we learnt that SeeAbility would be visiting Ellie’s school to pilot the idea of tailored, expert sight tests for children with complex special needs during the school day. Ellie was one of the first children to be seen by SeeAbility, and she has developed a bond with the staff, who are all lovely. What’s more, it takes only around half an hour and means that she doesn’t have to miss lessons or go through the anxiety of yet another hospital appointment. The last time Ellie had an eye test at school with SeeAbility, it changed her prescription and her glasses. The first I knew about it was when she came back from school with a new pair! The staff are so helpful and efficient. I’m an advocate for sight tests to be done in all special schools and hope that this incredible service will one day be available to all who need it. Life for Ellie isn’t as bad as it is for some. When we got Ellie’s diagnosis, the doctor explained

A problem shared... Got a worry or dilemma that’s keeping you up at night? Let our trusted agony aunt PAT GODFREY solve your woes with her insightful advice

“I despair whether I’ll ever be a grandma!”

M

y son and his wife are waiting too long to start a family and I’m worried. My son is 28 and she’s 33. They say they want children one day, but their focus seems to be on their high-paid careers. From experience, I know getting pregnant isn’t easy and I hint at how great it is to be a mum but my son just says, ‘All in good time’. I feel frustrated – I’d like to enjoy being a grandma while I’m still young. JULIE

PAT SAYS: I know you mean well but you need to back off a little. Deciding to start a family and all that entails – or not – is an intensely personal matter. Dropping hints won’t help. I understand why you’re worried, but many women do start their families later these days, even if their fertility is already falling by their late 20s. Your son and his wife may already be trying – and worrying – if it is taking longer than expected. Don’t add to their stress or take it

personally if they don’t discuss it with you. Of course, they may have decided the timing just isn’t right and while that may be hard to accept, in truth, it’s nobody’s business but theirs. If you think they would welcome advice, choose your moment carefully. Expert support can be found at Fertility Network UK (fertilitynetworkuk.org, 0142 473 2361) – and then leave it at that. In the meantime keep busy with projects you enjoy to take the pressure off yourself.

“Collections at work cost too much”

G

oing back to work after six years while my three sons were small, has been great. However, I’m getting annoyed by the number of times I get asked to contribute towards various whip rounds. I’ve been asked to give money for leaving gifts, donations for flowers when a colleague was sick, even a gift for the baby of someone I’ve not even met! I’ve tried saying I haven’t got enough in my purse, only to be told ‘tomorrow would do’, to give me time to pop by the cash point! I don’t want to seem mean but I really don’t have the money to spare. How do others deal with this situation? LYNNE

YOUR PROBLEMS

PHOTO PAUL BULLER

You can send your problems to Pat at the address given on page 121 or email pat@candis.co.uk Pat will endeavour to send a personal reply to every letter she receives.

PAT SAYS: I do sympathise. Money is tight for a lot of people and it’s no cause for shame. I expect you will already be paying out for non-uniform days, raffle tickets and plenty more besides at your son’s school – all for good causes but still making a big hole in the budget. Try not to be intimidated. Just give what you can or have a quiet word and explain that having three sons in school is expensive enough as it is. I bet you’ll find you’re not the only one feeling this way.If you bring it out into the open you may find colleagues would be just as happy with a simple card with their co-worker’s good wishes. It’s low cost, personalised and even better, it won’t take up space! It’s important to stick to your guns and create personal boundaries so you don’t feel resentment about being drawn into these collections. Being confident enough to say how you feel you will also garner respect. After all, you go to work to earn money, not spend it.

“My sister’s misery is dragging me down”

M

y sister looks sad all the time, so she gets all the attention from neighbours and friends. My life’s been much tougher, but nobody asks how I am. I’m 45 and my partner moved out when my two sons were young, so I brought them up alone and got on with it – all the time keeping a smile on my face. My sister is 42, has two lovely girls and a devoted husband who does housework while she’s out and about. When our mum died last year, it seemed like everyone consoled my sister; only my two closest friends cared about me. I’m not jealous, but I wish people would stop feeling sorry for her and spare a thought for me. Should I be honest and say so? JOANNE

PAT SAYS: I doubt being so honest about your sister would make you feel better. It’s a sad fact of life that we can’t control others and it’s wise not to try. What does interest me is how people treat you. It’s hard raising two sons alone and you can be proud you managed to cope. But I’m wondering if you have found it difficult to ask for help in the past? Did you feel you had to prove you could deal with whatever life threw your way? Showing no weakness can be a useful coping mechanism but over time, this habit may have inhibited you. If a neighbour asks how you are, do you

always say you’re fine? If you’re convincing, they will believe you’re OK and you’re coping well with the stress. Try something new. If people ask about your sister, try, “Don’t worry, she has lots of support, but I’m not feeling too great myself.” It’s OK to show weakness sometimes. Let your guard down and allow yourself to be honest. Say, “I’m worried” when you are. You’re only human, like everyone else. You might be surprised at the difference it makes. Be prepared that this works both ways though; they may feel that they can share their worries too.

Your horoscope What do the stars have in store for you this month? From health and work to money and relationships, resident astrologer RUSSELL GRANT reveals all

Your year ahead... LIBRA (24 Sept-23 Oct) Be good to yourself. Getting a massage will help release tension that has been building. This would be a great time to treat yourself to a new hairstyle and to add to your wardrobe. Not only will you find styles and colours that enhance your best features but you’ll get some great bargains, too. Check your cupboards before heading for the shops. Make notes of what you have and what you need. If you’re in a relationship, go out for a special dinner with your amour as October ends. You might enjoy trying a new restaurant in your area or exploring unfamiliar places together. Exercising with other people will keep you physically healthy, socially active and happier too. Someone’s success story could inspire you to embark on a new health regimen. As always, no matter what works for others, you should go with what suits you. You might go for a light workout at the gym or take walks through a park or beautiful neighbourhood. Trust your instincts regarding your health. Focus on balancing mind, body and spirit over the weeks and months ahead to ensure future wellness.

SCORPIO (24 Oct-22 Nov) Jupiter entering your sign promises so much in terms of travel, foreign deals and future planning. This marks the start of an auspicious cycle for Scorpios. Be ready to make the most of it. Project energy and enthusiasm in all you do. This will attract luck in all forms, especially financial. Slowly but surely you will radically transform. You will be breaking with the past and you will need to prepare yourself mentally and physically for a new future.

YOUR STARS

SAGITTARIUS (23 Nov-21 Dec) You’ve been helpful in mentoring a group of trainees – a serious responsibility. They’re on their own now and this month they will get the chance to show what they have learned under your guidance. There’s some excitement mid-October but this won’t make you impulsive and you will turn down an offer around the 21st if the risk is too high. When thinking of the future, plan intermediate goals rather than focusing on longer-term aims.

CAPRICORN (22 Dec-20 Jan) Your job and other responsibilities need top priority. You want to catch up with work that has fallen behind and you intend to do a good job. Cutting corners is not an option. By the 7th you will be on top of it all. October will bring many interesting things for you to do. You may hear some bizarre stories and several bits of juicy gossip at this time too. Eating well and getting a little exercise every day will make you more mindful of your body.

AQUARIUS (21 Jan-19 Feb) It may be necessary to overhaul your lifestyle or change your eating habits. Even the smallest effort to improve your quality of life will make a difference long-term, as long as you stick with your intentions. Small changes such as reducing your alcohol intake, taking more walks or cutting out certain foods will make you feel you are positively enhancing your well-being. Regular exercise and ample rest and recreation is recommended as October ends.

PISCES (20 Feb-20 Mar) You won’t be missing out on a lot if you opt out of attending social gatherings early in the month. Get-togethers are fun but will interfere with your aims. You can be really hard on yourself when you fall short of your expectations. Hard work and dedication will make a success out of an important assignment. You are putting a lot of thought into your future goals and will make the right choices even though this may mean big changes to come.

ARIES (21 Mar-20 Apr) Conversations on Facebook or Twitter could lead you to end friendships that are no longer meaningful. You’ve been spending too much time on social networking sites. Switch off your computer and visit outdoor centres offering fun activities for people of all ages. Joining youngsters in the family in pastimes you used to enjoy as a child will be uplifting. Helping vulnerable members of the community is also a good to integrate your mind, body and spirit.

YOUR STARS

TAURUS (21 Apr-21 May) A heavy workload is taking a toll. You always take responsibilities seriously and when there is a lot going on in life, you could forget to take care of your health. If you haven’t much time to exercise, try walking to work or using the stairs instead of lifts. Keep your body moving and watch what you eat. If your energy flags, take a break. Relaxation is the natural answer to stress and towards the end of the month, you should make time every day to relax.

GEMINI (22 May-21 June) Having time alone is not a sign that you’re anxious or depressed. Withdrawing from the mainstream when you feel tired or overwhelmed can be therapeutic. Take some quiet time to restore your equilibrium. Around the 11th, something may prevent you from making progress with work requiring a lot of energy. If you aren’t in the mood for chores, leave them. Why force yourself to do what you don’t want to? Listening to soothing music will relax you.

CANCER (22 June-23 July) Racing from one month to the next, trying to do everything yesterday, means you can’t stop and smell the roses. Dealing with erratic people drains your energy. Your inbox is heaped with messages and the phone won’t stop ringing, leaving you feeling slightly brittle. Take a few days off to recharge your batteries. Never feel guilty for needing to take it easy. After all, you can’t work flat out all the time. Think about adding some me-time into your days.

LEO (24 July-23 Aug) You could be surprised by how little time you have to yourself. From the start of the month, so many people want so many things that you don’t know whether you are coming or going. You could be more susceptible to any coughs and colds doing the rounds around the 19th. Vitamin C or a good multivitamin might help ward off such issues. Some good news about a neighbour or relative will cause you to breathe a sigh of relief as October ends. VIRGO (24 Aug-23 Sep) Something going on in the background could prevent you from progress in a private project. Whether it is a person or an unexpected hurdle, persevere and you’ll get there. Your assertive mood and can-do spirit will help you overcome difficulties. People enjoy your earthy sense of humour. You will be entrusted with important information around the 28th. People know they can trust you. Steer clear of a colleague who gets embroiled in a scandal.
