Having the freedom of choice is not to be taken lightly. God in all His omnipotence allows us to have free will—freedom to choose right or wrong, make healthy or unhealthy choices. What we don’t always enjoy, however, are the consequences that often go along with unhealthy or unwise choices. At TriVita, it is our mission to help you enjoy greater wellness by inspiring and providing you with quality products, services and educational materials to help you make healthier choices. This month we’re letting you build your own custom 4-Pack with two favorite wellness drinks. Choose any 4-Pack combination of Nopalea™ and Adaptuit™ for only $119.99. I actually create my own concoction each morning with Nopalea, Adaptuit and a scoop of Nopalea™ Daily Cleanse in a partially-filled water bottle. Sometimes I even sprinkle some Vital C Crystal Powder into the mix. If I’m feeling a bit run down, I know I’m giving my body some essential nutrients to help it adapt to whatever the day brings. If you’re looking to better manage your weight and finally achieve a healthy weight, you’ll be excited to try our Garcinia Cambogia™. Don’t forget to take it with a 12 ounce glass of water about 45 minutes before you eat. We want to hear your success stories, so please email us at: Story@TriVita.com. It’s also exciting that our new Leanology® Shake will soon be available in Canada. Call and ask a Wellness Consultant about the new shake that provides a nutrient-dense meal substitute while at the same time feeding a hungry child in Africa. So in celebrating our 15th year of TriVita, we want to especially celebrate and THANK YOU—our valued Member for your support and trust in our products and mission that are making a difference in lives around the world. Celebrate your freedom to make healthy choices!

PURSUING WELLNESS
Is there something BIG happening in your life? By Michael R. Ellison
N
o matter your age or season in life, there is always the possibility of something BIG happening in your life. Sometimes that something BIG may appear almost impossibly good, but there are also times when a very serious BIG may have a negative impact in your life. That is what Michael R. Ellison BIG offers!! There are really only Founder of TriVita two ways to look at what is BIG in our lives: If I succeed, what are the rewards, and if I fail, what are the consequences? Sometimes we cannot choose what is BIG in our lives—it just happens—but most of the time we can choose what is BIG in our lives. Fifteen years ago the launching of TriVita was BIG in my life and the lives of many others. It has at times been most challenging to push forward as change is happening all around us. But what has not changed and is BIG at TriVita, is the fact that many people are experiencing greater wellness!! This is our anniversary month of 15 years, and I want to thank everyone who has participated in making TriVita a success. A special thanks to all of our Members who buy our products and share their life stories with us.
Sometimes we get bogged down and life seems as if it were a rut. When you choose to live with a BIG in your life, and focus on the hope and possibility of the rewards of success, you will find renewed energy, focus and clarity. I would like to hope that if you drink a nutritious Leanology® Shake and feed a child a vitamin-fortified meal, it could be a BIG in your life (Leanology is coming soon to Canada!). When my wife Susan and I were in Africa looking into the eyes of those children and seeing hope and possibilities, it seemed very BIG to us and we felt it could be BIG with others. When we traveled with Peter and Ann Pretorius, founders of Joint Aid Management, and saw the sacrifice of their lives to help the poor and malnourished children and families all over central and southern Africa, we knew what was BIG in their lives. (Be looking for more on Peter and Ann’s inspiring story in the August issue of the VitaJournal.) What if you could share with others this wellness concept of “Drink a shake and feed a child,” and buddy up in a wellness weight loss journey… could that be BIG in your life? Pursue wellness with passion!
If you are not living with something BIG, you have the opportunity to choose something BIG for your life.

TRIVITA’S 15TH ANNIVERSARY
Celebrating a legacy of wellness, Leaning forward into the future
Michael R. Ellison Founder of TriVita
his month, TriVita T celebrates 15 years of bringing wellness to the world. The VitaJournal is privileged to present this look back—and ahead—by Founder Michael R. Ellison.
VJ: Why did you establish TriVita? Michael: TriVita was founded with the purpose of helping people experience greater wellness. I became aware of health and wellness issues when I addressed my own health crisis. I determined to found a company dedicated to helping people experience greater wellness with specialized product formulations, as well as leading-edge information from nutritional science. VJ: TriVita’s mission is “To help people experience wellness.” How do you define wellness? Michael: Wellness must encompass our physical, emotional and spiritual being. A wonderful thing is happening today in both medical and nutritional science: the recognition of how important it is to integrate all three into our wellness programs. I define wellness as having the energy and vitality to do the things you love to do, to daily have the positive emotions of love, forgiveness, gratitude and acceptance, to have a relationship with God and feel connected to His purpose.
6 l VITAJOURNAL
VJ: Early on, you crossed paths with a renowned wellness advocate, Dr. Alfred Libby. How did that help shape the direction of TriVita?
Michael: We have always developed products through a unique filter: Does it help people experience greater wellness?
Michael: God’s plan brought TriVita and Dr. Libby together when the company started. Dr. Libby, a colleague of Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling, had found a wonderful, patented process for helping people take Vitamin B-12 sublingually (under the tongue).
Over the years, TriVita has searched the globe for the botanicals to help people enjoy wellness. With Nopalea, it was the indigenous people of the Sonoran Desert who shared their traditions of beneficial foods—in this case, the Nopal cactus. With Adaptuit, we researched the stress-fighting adaptogenic plants of Siberia to create a unique and popular formula. And Zamu Gold, available only as personal use, came about through my acquaintance with “Amazon John” Easterling. His 25+ years in the Amazon Rainforest helped us bring forward this drink featuring Camu Camu, an antioxidant-rich berry that has been researched extensively for its health benefits.
As great as that process was, Dr. Libby didn’t have a platform for sharing it with large numbers of people. TriVita was the platform: it allowed a large Dr. Alfred Libby audience to enjoy the benefits of B-12 and the sublingual delivery system that Dr. Libby had patented. Today, Sublingual B-12 continues to benefit thousands and thousands of our Members. After all these years, it’s our #2-selling product: there aren’t many products that have that kind of staying power. J: The success of V Sublingual B-12 has been followed by so many other innovations: Nopalea™, Adaptuit™, Zamu Gold™. How do these products reflect TriVita’s mission?
VJ: TriVita has the distinction of operating its own fully-licensed medical center. How does the TriVita Wellness Center in Scottsdale, AZ extend the mission? Michael: We’ve always had the vision of integrating a wellness center into the TriVita mission because of the expanded opportunities it brings. With a medically-licensed facility headed by a medical doctor (Harolyn Gilles, M.D.), we can address certain health conditions and issues in a different way than we can through dietary supplements. Here’s an example: The World Health Organization now talks about the TriVita.com

= x20
“globesity” epidemic worldwide. Overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for deaths around the globe.1 Through our Weight Management Program at the Wellness Center, we can help people achieve a healthier weight—even those who may have medical problems related to weight gain—and therefore reduce their risk of other health issues. VJ: As an international company, how is TriVita helping people all over the world to enjoy greater quality of life? Michael: It isn’t just about losing and maintaining weight: it’s about achieving and maintaining healthy weight for a greater purpose, such as wellness and quality of life. That’s why we’re so committed to the new Leanology program—and to LeanForward.
1-800-344-8797
Our Leanology Shake (coming soon to Canada) is real nutrition: a nutrientdense Shake you can use to manage weight and add lean muscle tissue, when combined with activity. Led by Dr. Bill Wheeler, a noted nutritionist who has counseled two Presidents and sports superstars, our team has created a remarkable product. VJ: What makes the LeanForward program so special? Michael: LeanForward is a meal program connected to the Leanology Shake. It’s our promise, backed up by a contract, that when you drink a shake serving, we will feed a meal to a child. My wife Susan and I have worked with Life Outreach International and with Joint Aid Management for over 25 years, helping to support food
programs in Africa. LeanForward helps us connect our passion for helping children to the elements they need: nutrition, education, clean water and physical exercise (see page 13). VJ: What’s ahead for TriVita? Michael: Our vision is to develop a number of products in the Leanology weight management line to help address the globesity crisis. And, we are making plans for sustaining our company for the long-term to help people experience greater wellness. When people think of TriVita in the future, I hope they will say, “That’s the wellness company that, when you drink their Leanology Shake, they feed a hungry child.” Reference: 1 O besity and overweight. THE DOCTOR IS IN
Why normalizing inflammation is a good thing… And how immune health, stress are involved By Samuel Grief, M.D.
O
uch! You hurt yourself and wonder why your injury is turning red right in front of your very eyes… It’s your body’s primary mechanism of reacting to injury and illness kicking into high gear. This mechanism involves bringing more blood and immune system components to the affected area. This mechanism has a name: Inflammation. Samuel Grief, M.D., CCFP, FCFP, was named one of “Chicago’s Top Doctors” in 2012. Dr. Grief is Medical Director at the University of Illinois. He is also a member of TriVita’s Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Grief received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

Inflammation, literally meaning “setting on fire,” shows up in the human body in four different ways: redness, warmth or heat, swelling and/or pain. Typically, inflammation reveals itself with more than one of these major symptoms. So, it is not surprising that most disease states or disturbances in health are accompanied by some form of inflammation. The inflammatory reaction in the human body is not always related to disease or illness, as demonstrated when the skin is injured. Typical responses ensue: pain, then swelling, followed by heat and redness. This short-term inflammatory reaction helps with healing, and it’s natural and desirable. However, visible or surface inflammation is like the tip of an iceberg: most inflammation or inflammatory reactions occur below the skin surface, at the cellular level within vital organs.
Inflammation… is an immune response Science has confirmed that inflammation at the cellular level is an immune response. Many various protein markers (also called bio-markers) have been identified and implicated in the inflammatory reactions. You may have heard your doctor referring to these markers when he/she uses terms such as: tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), prostaglandins, leukotrienes, C-reactive protein and more. Medical science has developed biological, immune-regulating agents to counteract the body’s normal, and often abnormal, inflammatory responses to a variety of diseases, e.g., Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, psoriasis and allergies, among others. The key to understanding inflammation is to recognize that all humans experience it, likely on a daily basis. The problem is that an excessive inflammatory response will play havoc with normal immune and bodily functions, leading to disease states and sickness. To lessen the impact of these diseases, physicians and healthcare providers regularly prescribe anti-inflammatory medications. These medications help reduce, or “normalize” inflammation to more acceptable levels.
TriVita.com
What “normal” inflammation looks like: Your body is in balance and you’re enjoying optimal wellness.
Normalizing inflammation—not entirely ridding the body of inflammation—is the ultimate goal of maintaining balanced bodily functions and wellness. We need a certain level of inflammation; without any at all, the body will not react to foreign invaders, such as germs and disease-carrying microbes, or the blade of a sharp knife. So, “normal” inflammation is beneficial: we need it to function and thrive. Managing stress and other inflammation boosters Strategies to reduce or normalize inflammation are well-known among healthcare practitioners. They include: eating a balanced diet with an emphasis on plant foods, exercise and physical activity in moderation, coping with and reducing stress, limiting consumption of alcohol, and avoiding noxious substances such as smoke, smog, fumes, chemicals, etc.
1-800-344-8797
Stress deserves some extra mention here. As with inflammation, some stress is necessary to enhance our overall function and performance. But when we’re under too much stress, it can lead to health problems. Excess or negative stress has been proven to cause many disease conditions, including high blood pressure, stomach irritation and ulcers, muscular and joint pains, anxiety and nervousness, heart disease and even cancer. Why is stress such a potent threat to wellness? Because chronic stress weakens the immune system. And a weakened immune system is less able to repair and protect, so early cellular damage can progress into cancer. As I’ve written in these pages before, stress and disease join in a “circle of stress.” When chronic stress afflicts a person, the immune system and its normal function suffers. When the immune system isn’t working well, sickness and
illness occur. This leads to increased inflammation in the body. Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and prednisone (steroids), are known for reducing inflammation. In the right context and when medically necessary, these drugs are valuable in relieving pain and suffering in people with excess inflammation. Other products, such as nutraceuticals (supplements), are often touted as being able to help the body normalize inflammation. Research is ongoing as to which supplements will work best in partnering with our bodies’ built-in inflammatory balancing act. Until then, it is important to check with your doctor before starting any medication, drug or supplemental regimen for your inflammatory condition. This article is intended for educational purposes only.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
“…we have noticed definite health improvements.” “I am not a person who normally writes testimonials. My husband and I will be 80 this year. I am still very active and people don’t believe my age. My husband, however, has had some health issues, and had reached the point where he could hardly stand to walk. Both of us started taking Nopalea recently and we have noticed definite health improvements. My husband walks stronger, is no longer bent over, and his back and neck are more flexible. We are stronger, feel younger, and are more active than we’ve been in a long time.” Faith M., Member—Jonesboro, AR
“TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 helps us to spend more quality time…” “Having a fairly large family demands a lot of our time. We have seven grandchildren that we see often. Sugar drives cravings more than fat Why we can’t say “no” to the sweet stuff
J
ust one more cookie, you tell yourself, only to discover you’ve eaten most of the bag—maybe all of it. What drives this seeming inability to police ourselves when it comes to treats? Researchers at the Oregon Research Institute were surprised to discover that sugar, more than fat, is the culprit behind this overeating. Sugar more rewarding than fat In their study, scientists tracked the brain activity of 106 teenagers as they drank a variety of chocolate milk shakes: high fat/high sugar, high fat/low sugar, low fat/high sugar and low fat/low sugar. Through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), researchers observed the areas of the brain triggered by the various shakes. All the milkshakes activated the pleasure centers of the brain (areas involved in taste and sensation), but it was how the shakes affected the reward regions of the brain that interested researchers. Specifically, how the food reward system was affected (regions of the brain implicated in compulsive eating; increased activity in these areas leads to an increased desire to eat). The low fat/low sugar shakes only activated the pleasure centers of the brain. The high fat/low sugar shakes triggered the pleasure centers of the brain and parts of the reward system. But the high sugar/low fat shakes activated even more areas of the reward system; adding fat to the high sugar/low fat shakes did not increase this activity. These 12 l VITAJOURNAL
findings led one researcher to conclude that “as far as ability to engage brain reward regions and drive compulsive intake, sugar seems to be doing a much better job than fat.” How to cut back Armed with the knowledge that sugar can be difficult to resist (as if we didn’t know it before!), there are steps we can take to avoid our own worst impulses. Below, some simple tips for cutting back and removing the temptation.
• First, decide—you must make the decision to reduce your sugar intake.
• Drink more water—sugary beverages are a major source of sugar in modern diets.
• Get your sugar naturally—fresh fruit can help satisfy your sweet tooth.
• Learn to recognize hidden sugars—it goes by many names so educate yourself and eliminate hidden sugars from your diet.
• Don’t keep sweets around the house—if you don’t have them, you can’t eat them.
• Indulge once in a while—complete deprivation can lead to binging; choose a treat for yourself occasionally. Reference: Stice, E., et al (2013). “D”-fend your health with Vitamin D Why it’s so necessary
V
itamin D is no longer considered just a “bone vitamin.” Now, thanks to extensive research and numerous clinical studies, we know that nearly every area of the body can benefit from Vitamin D.
That’s why so many doctors are recommending much higher amounts of Vitamin D for better health. Without optimal levels of Vitamin D, your body is more susceptible to many different disorders, from heart disease, Alzheimers and dementia to weak, brittle bones and diabetes. Another remarkable fact: Even if you have normal blood sugar, Vitamin D deficiency makes you 91% more likely to progress to insulin resistance or “pre-diabetes,” and it more than doubles your risk of progressing to Type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency is a global epidemic. Approximately 1 billion people don’t have adequate Vitamin D levels, and 64% of North Americans lack enough Vitamin D to avoid many health conditions. So, assessing your own Vitamin D status is clearly very important. Thankfully, achieving an optimal level of Vitamin D is easy, inexpensive and helps protect against a wide range of diseases. We can make some Vitamin D in our bodies, but most of us require additional amounts from diet, the sun, or from supplements to maintain adequate levels. Once Vitamin D has been ingested through food or produced in the skin, the liver and kidneys convert it to the active form: Vitamin D3. Virtually every tissue type in the body has receptors for Vitamin D, which means all tissues need large amounts of this vitamin for adequate functioning. Higher Vitamin D dosage may be necessary to support heart muscle, brain cells, fat tissue and more.1 Insufficient sun exposure Sunlight is one of the main sources of Vitamin D. The glands of your skin secrete a steroid onto the skin surface, which allows some ultraviolet waves of light to be absorbed. This ultraviolet light is then converted to Vitamin D. During the 14 l VITAJOURNAL
summer, you are more likely to receive adequate amounts of sunlight and Vitamin D. However, sun avoidance, use of sunblock or the latitude you live in can all contribute to Vitamin D deficiency. Food and supplements You may need to depend on food or supplements for adequate Vitamin D. Food sources of Vitamin D include liver, beef, eggs, milk, cheese, salmon, tuna and sardines. However, it may be difficult to get enough Vitamin D through food alone, and you may want to consider Vitamin D supplementation.
Two new studies confirm Vitamin D’s value
V
itamin D was proven to be effective with a variety of medical issues, according to two recent studies. The findings were published this spring in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). The first study was designed to measure the death rate from cardiovascular disease, cancer or other health issues. Medical records of 850,000 people from several ongoing trials were analyzed. There was an increased risk of death among those with low Vitamin D levels. It was also noted that supplementation with Vitamin D3 reduced overall death rates significantly among older adults. Another article in BMJ addressed probable associations between Vitamin D and birth weight, mother’s Vitamin D concentrations at term and parathyroid hormone concentrations in patients with chronic kidney disease. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) responded to the study by saying, “There is enough positive research currently to indicate that people should be supplementing with Vitamin D for a variety of positive health outcomes.” Reference: Vitamin D Studies Spotlighted in British Medical Journal. Shoot your scale • Focus on inches lost—not pounds lost. • Lean tissue takes up only 2/3 the space of fat. • Measure weight loss goals in reduced dress sizes and/or belt notches.
5. Walk the pounds off • Regular exercise is important. • Begin by walking 2,000 extra steps (1 mile) per day. • Add 2,000 steps per day each week. Soon you will be walking 10,000 steps (5 miles) a day. 6. Get friendly with weight loss • Tell your friends your goals for losing weight. • Ask your friends to hold you accountable. 7. Celebrate your success • Celebrate your weight loss successes. • You are making a difference in your life: you are taking control.
2. Eat to lose weight • You cannot “starve” the pounds off! • Eat 5-6 small meals a day; keep your metabolism high. • Do not miss meals. Your body will feel like you are starving it and your metabolism will be slowed.
8. Take one pound at a time • Realize your road to weight loss is accomplished “one pound at a time.” • A trip of 1,000 miles starts “one step at a time.” • You lose 100 pounds “one pound at a time.”
3. Drink the pounds off: hydrate • Drink ½ ounce of pure water per pound of body weight each day. • Coffee, tea, milk and soda do not count. • Water helps you flush the by-products of fat-burning from your system.
9. Supplement your weight loss • Use dietary supplements to provide needed additional nutrients for weight loss. • Your dietary supplementation program should provide nutrients needed for optimum health and wellness.
4. Make “better bad choices” • Slight modifications in foods that you choose can make big differences in weight loss. • You don’t need to deprive yourself; just make better choices, such as honey-covered peanuts instead of handsful of candy.
10. Go for healthy weight loss • Have your healthcare provider monitor your weight loss progress. • Be sure that medications are monitored as you lose weight. • Your objective is better health and wellness.

SUMMER AWARENESS
Protecting the skin you’re in A guide to fighting skin cancer By Tammy Pon, M.D.
W
ith summertime almost here, it’s also time to protect your largest organ against a widespread threat: Skin cancer. This is the most common type of cancer in North America, with about one million new U.S. cases and over 80,000 new cases in Canada each year. Wherever you live, it’s important to be on guard against skin cancer, know your risk, and do all you can to help avoid becoming a statistic. Tammy Pon, M.D., is a member of TriVita’s Medical Advisory Board. A functional medicine physician, she received her medical degree from the University of Texas in Houston. Dr. Pon completed specialty training in Healthy Aging.
Cause and types of skin cancer Like all cancer, skin cancer is abnormal cell growth: cells multiply uncontrollably to form a growth or tumor. These tumors can be benign (harmless) or malignant (cancerous). A malignant tumor or growth can spread, cause damage to healthy tissues and make you sick. The root cause of skin cancer is exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) light, whether from the sun, sunlamps or tanning booths. There are three main types of skin cancer: 1. Basal cell carcinoma (cancer), which occurs just under the top layer of skin, where our glands and nerves are; 2. Squamous cell carcinoma, which forms in the top layer of living skin; and 3. Melanoma, which is the most serious, and can occur anywhere on the body.
16 l VITAJOURNAL
Fortunately, the two most common types— basal cell and squamous cell cancers—are also the most treatable. Although melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, it can often be treated effectively if it’s caught early.
Who is most susceptible? Anyone—even people with very dark skin —can get skin cancer. However, you’re most likely to get skin cancer if you:
• Spend a lot of time in the sun. • Use tanning beds or sun lamps. • Live (or once lived) in an intense-sun area, such as Florida, the Caribbean or northern Australia.
You’re at higher risk for getting skin cancer if you:
• Have fair skin (especially blond or red), and blue, green or gray eyes.
• Had bad sunburns in the past. • Have skin that burns or freckles instead of tans.
• Have more than 50 moles. Types of skin changes to watch for Not all skin cancers look the same (see photos), and not all skin changes mean you have skin cancer. The most common things to watch for are: a new skin growth (like a mole), a mole that is bleeding, a sore that doesn’t heal, or a change in an old skin growth. It’s a good idea to examine your skin monthly to check for new growths and changes in old growths. Use a full-length mirror, and a hand-held mirror for closer views. You should let your healthcare provider know about changes in your skin; you may be referred to a dermatologist (a skin specialist). TriVita.com
7 steps to prevention Medical experts advise these precautions to help prevent skin cancer: 1. Don’t use tanning beds or sun lamps: these can skyrocket your risk of getting melanoma by 75%.
3. Use sunscreen that has an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 and says “broad spectrum,” or “UVA/UVB protection” on the label. 4. Wear clothing that protects from UV rays. If you can see through a garment held up to bright light, you won’t be protected. 5. Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Melanoma can develop in the eyes. 6. If possible, avoid time outdoors when the sun is strongest, between 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

2. Wear sunscreen and lip balm during sun exposure, even on cloudy days.

EATING FOR WELLNESS
Eating to stay in balance: Acid vs. alkaline foods By Christa Orecchio
H Christa Orecchio is a Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist. She is the creator of The Whole Journey Healthy Product Review site, a TEDx speaker, the nutrition expert on FOX’s weekly San Diego show, “Food as Medicine,” as well as the host of “The Randy and Christa Show: News that makes you healthier,” which airs nationally on DRTV.
ealth is truly a balance among all the systems of the body. The cells of our body are so interconnected that when you improve the balance of any one system, it improves the balance and vitality of the rest of the organ systems. For example, improving cardiovascular health improves digestive function. Improving the function of the nervous system will improve the lymphatic system, and possibly most important, when you improve the acid/alkaline balance of the body, you improve every other system in the body at the same time. Balance begins in the blood Finding balance begins in our bloodstream, as does repairing injuries, reducing inflammation, burning fat, building strong bones and increasing energy and vitality. In order to function properly, the blood and other body fluids must maintain a very narrow acid/alkaline balance, which is measured by the pH factor (potential hydrogen). pH ranges from 0-14 (very acidic to very alkaline). A pH below 7.0 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. Keep in mind when and if you test your pH that there is a tenfold difference between each number. For example, a pH of 5.0 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 6.0. The dangers of imbalance Blood pH does not shift easily. The pH of our blood is between 7.25-7.45, and if the blood’s pH falls below or above that range, the body cannot function properly. A tremendous amount of energy is expended
18 l VITAJOURNAL
to maintain pH levels; this effort may pull alkaline minerals from your body’s reserves, potentially causing deficiencies and health disorders. The New York Times recently featured an article explaining this theory; the theory was first published in 1968 by two American doctors who were focusing on improved bone health. Bones store calcium, and calcium compounds regulate the acid/alkaline balance of our blood. When our blood becomes too acidic, we leach calcium from our bones and our bones become less dense. When we maintain proper pH levels, injuries heal faster and health challenges improve more quickly because the body is oxygenated and can therefore detoxify and heal itself. If cells are energized in this way, we develop a strong immunity to diseases and a significantly lower propensity for cancer. Maintaining balance The best way to maintain optimal pH levels and optimal vitality is through what we eat and drink and how we react to stress. For the diet, if you follow an 80/20 rule—80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% acid—you should experience all the benefits that a body balance has to offer. Studies at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University demonstrate the acid-neutralizing ability of fruits and vegetables to maintain healthy

bones. Just make sure you’re buying organic produce to offset the additional and unnecessary acid load that pesticides can cause! Start with these low-acid, alkaline-forming recipes.

Blueberries & Belgian endive Blueberries: So berry good for you! Indigenous to North America, these nutritious darlings of the berry world continue to grow in popularity. Annual per capita consumption of blueberries rose from 15.5 ounces in 1995 to 39.5 ounces in 2011. North Americans consumed 853 million pounds of blueberries in 2011. Blueberries contain phytonutrients—substances with antioxidant properties—as well as a host of vitamins and minerals. One cup of fresh blueberries delivers 14% Daily Value (DV) of fiber and 24% DV of Vitamin C. An excellent source of manganese, they also provide Vitamin A, potassium and folate. Blueberries should be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator. If you freeze fresh blueberries for later use, don’t wash them until after they’re thawed. Belgian endive (on-deev) This member of the chicory family, which includes escarole and radicchio, is extremely low in calories, at approximately 17 calories per head (about one calorie per leaf). Belgian endive can be enjoyed raw or cooked, and is commonly used in appetizers, thanks to its scoop-like shape. Low in sodium and fat, endive is a good source of Vitamins B, C and K, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, folate, selenium, beta-carotene and potassium. Select endive that is covered to avoid light exposure. Look for crisp, tight leaves. Store in the crisper section of the refrigerator and use within two weeks of purchase. July 2014 l 19

Q: Is there a link between Vitamin B-12 and energy? By Scott Conard, M.D.
A:
Indeed there is. You see, Vitamin B-12 is critical to the body processes that produce energy.
Scott Conard, M.D., DABFM, FAAFP, has more than 20 years of successful clinical practice, research and leadership experience. Through his Texasbased practice and books he’s authored, he empowers people to take control of their health.
20 l VITAJOURNAL
B-12 plays a key role in metabolism—all the physical and chemical processes in the body that convert or use energy. These body functions include: breathing; circulating blood; controlling body temperature; contracting muscles; digesting food and nutrients; eliminating waste; functioning of the brain and nerves. Every single one of these metabolic tasks requires adequate amounts of Vitamin B-12. As you may know, B-12 helps form red blood cells, and also helps keep our central nervous system running. When we don’t get enough of this powerhouse vitamin, a whole host of physical and mental problems can occur, including: • Fatigue • Anemia • Loss of balance • Memory problems Ideally, we’d all get the B-12 we need from animal products such as eggs, meat, milk, poultry and shellfish. However, very few people eat “ideally.” And, there’s the matter of being able to use all the B-12 that we take in. As time goes on, the body is less able to absorb all the B-12 it needs. We now know that this absorption issue affects not just older people, but even those as young as in their 20s. So, even if your diet is rich in B-12, your body may not be getting what it requires.
There are other causes for B-12 deficiencies. These include following a strict vegetarian or vegan diet; having gastrointestinal surgery (such as weight loss surgery), and having digestive problems such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease. Why I recommend supplementation When any of the “B-blocking” situations exist, you simply cannot enjoy the optimal wellness and energy that make up a vibrant, healthy life. Remember, B-12 is important for metabolism. And metabolism affects both our physical and mental functioning. So, if you lack this key component, you may experience fatigue… confusion… poor memory… mental decline. In my own medical practice, I’ve seen the difference that B-12 can make in people’s lives. I’ve had many patients come to me with low energy, mood problems and a lack of interest in life. And I’ve seen many remarkable turnarounds in these same patients once their B-12 deficiency was corrected. That’s why I recommend a quality sublingual B-12 supplement, so people can get the B-12 they need to enjoy life. This article is intended for educational purposes only. Exercise your way to better brain health By Sandra Bond Chapman, Ph.D.
W
e all know that fitness is beneficial for our physical and cardiovascular health. Now, our new research at the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas shows that it is also good for our mind—specifically, the hippocampus, the part of the brain most notably associated with memory function. New findings show that aerobic exercise (sustained exercise that elevates the heart rate) improves brain function and boosts memory— news that will hopefully motivate you to get up and move your feet as an incentive to prevent Alzheimer’s disease later in life. Published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, the research shows that sedentary adults between ages 57 and 75 who added regular aerobic exercise to their routine experienced improved memory, brain health and physical fitness in just three months—half the time of previous studies. For the study, 18 adults participated in supervised aerobic exercise on a stationary bike or treadmill for one hour, three times a week for 12 weeks. Participants’ cognition, brain blood flow and cardiovascular fitness were assessed at three time points: before beginning the physical exercise regimen, midway through at six weeks, and post-training at 12 weeks. Where we saw improvement was memory for facts. The cognitive test used a short news story to assess participants’ memory for details immediately after hearing the story. The 1-800-344-8797
exercisers’ ability to retain the information from the story improved after aerobic activity, even when asked 20 to 25 minutes after hearing the story. Stay active to keep the brain vigorous It’s important to note that the brain-boosting benefits of exercise last only as long as you engage in regular physical activity. It is important to make aerobic exercise a lifestyle habit to reap the brain health rewards, no matter your age. For the most robust brain gains, our research shows that you must also give your brain a mental workout to keep the mind sharp. Life moves fast, and we often compensate by falling into routine, letting our thoughts, conversations and activities become stagnant. Rote memorization and regurgitation of information at the lowest level fails to challenge our brain to do what it loves best: innovate. Allowing your brain to function at this low level fails to strengthen the connections in your brain. Start thinking like a reporter, and synthesize ideas in new ways. After enjoying a movie, book or news article think deeply, and formulate succinct take-away messages.
Sandra Bond Chapman, Ph.D., is founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas. An acclaimed cognitive neuroscientist, Dr. Chapman is committed to discovering ways to build resilience, regain cognitive function and retrain the brain to maximize the amazing potential of this remarkable organ.
The combination of physical and mental exercise may be the best health measures to improve overall cognitive brain health and elevate memory performance. So challenge your thinking daily, lace up those sneakers and get moving! This article is intended for educational purposes only.

Experience the healing power of Pulsed Magnetic Therapy Help enhance energy, vitality and quality of life
F
eeling like a run-down motor or suffering from aches or pain? It’s no wonder; our modern lives have a way of creating a wide variety of chronic mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and environmental stresses that ultimately become physical distress on our bodies. With the loss of over 90% of the earth’s electromagnetic field (critical to our survival) and today’s polluted environment, almost everybody is filled with toxins and operating at a level far below their true potential. That’s because if cells aren’t healthy, the body is not healthy. There is relief on hand, and it comes in the form of pulsed electromagnetic frequency, better known as PEMF. PEMF therapy has been approved by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) to promote healing and has been used in Europe for over 20 years. The benefits of PEMF therapy have also been demonstrated by many universitylevel double-blind medical studies. PEMF was used by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to help treat astronauts who were deprived of gravity and the Earth’s natural electromagnetic frequency for long periods of time. They often returned to Earth with a wide variety of physical and mental ailments. 22 l VITAJOURNAL
PEMF quickly resolved these issues and allowed them to literally get back on their feet. How it works This revolutionary pain relief therapy pulses an electromagnetic field into the body, creating an extraordinary healing effect. PEMF therapy reenergizes damaged cells by inducing electrical changes within the cell that restore it to its normal healthy state. You may experience improved cellular metabolism, regenerated blood cells and increased circulation and oxygen carrying capacity. Ultimately PEMF therapy may help reduce pain and dramatically improve the quality of your life by allowing your body to function as it was designed to do. This treatment is completely noninvasive and the magnetic pulses are adjusted to your individual needs so there is no discomfort or pain. The electromagnetic frequency range used with PEMF therapy resembles the earth’s natural resonating frequency range and is beneficial to the human body. Some people may notice immediate relief; however, chronic conditions could require more treatments.
Broad range of benefits PEMF therapy can help increase: • Circulation, energy to cells and cell hydration • Bone density, lean muscle mass • Flexibility, range of motion, stamina, strength and endurance • Nerve and muscle response PEMF can help decrease: • Pain, stiffness, swelling • Inflammation and swelling • Spasms, stress, bruises and contusions A free 30-minute appointment is available. To schedule, call the TriVita Wellness Center at 480-337-4148. You must personally visit the Wellness Center to receive this offer. If you’re not able to visit the Wellness Center, you may want to look into PEMF therapy in your own community. TriVita Wellness Center does NOT use or endorse PEMF as treatment or to diagnose any disease. This device is not used as a medical device, but rather as a non-invasive adjunct to standard medical care to enhance energy, vitality and quality of life.

any women know the embarrassment of upper arm jiggle. This is due to our female biology—without regular toning, fat deposits tend to gravitate to our upper arms. Although you can’t spot reduce, you can tone these areas. By targeting the backs of the arms in combination with the shoulders, it is possible to have beautifully sculpted, lean arms. You can do these easy arm moves at home; no gym required! Arm Rotations: Stand or sit with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your spine straight, chin up and tummy pulled in. Next, fully extend both arms in front of you (right arm directly over right knee, left arm over left knee) with your hands in the thumbsup position. Next, rotate the thumbs in and downward (as if you were pouring out a bottle of water). Continue rotating upward and downward. You should feel this in the backs of your arms (the triceps), and also in your shoulders. Work up to doing this for one minute without a break. Repeat 5 times. If you want more of a challenge, you can hold full water bottles to increase the resistance. This is actually more challenging than it sounds! Housework: Lots of household chores can actually tone the upper arms and shoulders. By mindfully engaging certain muscles, you can turn your housework into bodywork.
1-800-344-8797
• Scrubbing a countertop—use the right arm to do five clockwise circles, five counter-clockwise circles and then do the same with your left arm. The harder you scrub, the more you will sculpt your arms. • Vacuuming—use long strokes to push and pull the vacuum cleaner. As you push, try to feel the muscles in your shoulders doing the work, and as you pull back, use your triceps to do most of the work. Stress Relief: Standing with feet hip-width apart, bend your knees slightly and pull your tummy in. Raise your arms up as if you are going to box. Punch your right hand forward (keep your abs tight). Bring hands to center and switch. Box on each side 20 times. Strategic Posing: Use these tips to immediately look slimmer, whether for a photo or just because: • Place your hand on your hip. This visually elongates the arm and makes the shoulder “pop.” When you page through magazines, notice how many celebrities pose this way: it is universally flattering. • Stand up straight with your shoulders back. This will make your entire body look long and lean. To book a free consultation with Jolene, call the TriVita Wellness Center toll-free at 1-888-669-5036.

Boomers turning to fortified foods and beverages Nutrients can help prevent age-related chronic conditions
T
hanks to baby boomers, the number of older people in the world continues to explode. In 1950 only 8% of the world’s population was over 60 years old. That proportion will rise to 21% by the year 2050. Aging is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease, disability and death. The financial burden alone to society for caring for an aging population is substantial. For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the costs for healthcare, long-term care and hospice for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias alone is expected to increase from $183 billion in 2011 to $1.1 trillion in 2050. Aging affects everybody in different ways, but the main contributors to healthy aging are genetics, family history, lifestyle practices, exercise, diet and nutrition. Both exercise and diet can be modified to improve health. That is why so many baby boomers are turning to fortified foods and beverages to fight off the effects of aging, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). These key nutrients include:
• Calcium and Vitamin D—play an important role in bone metabolism and the prevention of bone-related conditions. • Antioxidants—help combat free radical damage and improve health. • B vitamins—Vitamins B-6, B-12 and folate are three important B vitamins that help supply the body with methyl groups that are important to many functions in the body. • Omega-3 fatty acids—thought to have anti-inflammatory effects and to lower blood triglycerides.1 • Prebiotics and Probiotics—these “friendly” bacteria help prevent the growth of unfriendly bacteria and yeast. • Coenzyme Q-10—Supplementation with CoQ-10 helps reduce the inflammatory markers in patients with coronary heart disease.2 This nutrient is also a powerful antioxidant that can reduce oxidative stress. Real love doesn’t hurt: Dealing with the crime of relationship violence By Mamiko Odegard, Ph.D.
R
elationship (or domestic) violence isn’t something that happens only to “other people.” The cruel reality is that in the United States, a woman is beaten or abused every nine seconds. Elsewhere around the world, at least one of every three women is at some time abused and violated. We are all affected directly or indirectly by experiencing or knowing family members, friends, co-workers and others who have suffered the emotional, mental and physical pain of domestic violence. Dr. Mamiko Odegard, a messenger of hope and change, helps individuals and couples to enjoy life and business success. Best-selling author of “Daily Affirmations for Love,” she is known as “The Love and Relationship Expert.” Based in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Odegard brings over 30 years’ experience as a psychologist and college instructor.
26 l VITAJOURNAL
Domestic violence occurs in all social classes, and can affect men as well as women. Sadly, it is still a dirty secret: it comes with threats of further harm if the sufferer reveals the crime. The victim often believes that he or she must not tell anyone for fear of getting beaten or killed. The violence isn’t physical only: Words can also hurt when you are repeatedly told day after day, month after month that “no one could love you, you’re stupid, you’re ugly.” Because of the intimidation, fear and damaged self-esteem, many victims feel trapped. They may believe that they are indeed “damaged goods,” and this worsens their sense of powerlessness and anxiety. They feel stuck and experience sadness, anxiety and loss of hope. These feelings are made worse when the criminals isolate their victims by controlling access to friends and family, making threats of injury or death to the victim or other family members. Perpetrators often exercise control through
rages, in which their quick anger causes great fear to the victim and innocent children. What can you do if you or someone you know is faced with domestic violence? 1. Know the signs of abuse and the profile of the abuser. The abuser tends to belittle, undermine and blame, uses threats, uses physical violence, forces a partner to have sex, and tries to control what the partner thinks, feels and does. Isolation from family and friends is common. The goal? To keep the victim in a state of fear, obedient and dependent. 2. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. Resources vary in Canada; you can contact the local police, a health centre or community organization. 3. Confide in someone you trust. 4. Make plans and seek safety. There are shelters available in many cities; social welfare agencies and spiritual leaders may also be helpful. 5. Get help from a professional therapist. He/she can help you build your resolve, skills and self-esteem to stay away from the abuser and aid in making healthier relationship choices. Know that you are precious! You have the right to protect yourself, and you deserve to live in peace. TriVita.com

True wisdom lies in knowledge of the heart By Chaplain Donna Kafer
“ For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.” —Proverbs 2:10
S
ometimes when faced with major decisions in life, we often hesitate, fearful of not making the right choice. If our personal history has taught us anything, it’s that we don’t always make the best decisions where we’re concerned. As people of faith it helps to remember we can come to The Lord, asking Him to guide us, praying that He will keep us from choosing the wrong path. Sometimes though, our prayers are met by silence, leaving us in even more of a quandary. To begin with, we have a misconception about knowledge. It’s one thing to say that we possess knowledge about the choices we need to make, but it’s quite another to say that we’re using it wisely. Having head knowledge is great, but using heart knowledge is where true wisdom lies. To be able to live in wisdom means we need to move our head knowledge to our heart, which in turn moves it to our feet, which propels us forward. When faced with life-altering decision making, we sometimes fumble, and stall in moving forward in confidence. If we will begin to apply certain principles to our decision-making process we will achieve higher success rates. Pastor Andy Stanley, 1-800-344-8797
from North Point Church near Atlanta, Georgia, teaches this most valuable insight. Difficult decision? The question to ask The next time we’re faced with a difficult decision and fear making the wrong decision, we should ask ourselves this question: “ In light of my past experience, current circumstance and my future hopes and dreams, what’s the wise thing to do?” When we use this “formula,” if you will, we will be able to aptly apply it to the choices that we need to make. It is one that will give us insight in how to move head knowledge from our mind to our heart and then to our feet, to act wisely and definitively. How many of us would love to be able to go back in time and have the opportunity to correct our mistakes? Since we know that’s impossible, we can instead begin to confidently apply this sound teaching to all of our decision making tasks, beginning now.
Donna Kafer, TriVita’s chaplain, has served as chaplain to the Arizona State Legislature for 16 years. In addition, Donna is a motivational speaker and author. She has written two books, and now has a third book in progress.
I have found that this application has liberated my questions about what I should do. It truly is exhilarating to have a tool that will help us apply head knowledge to actual heart wisdom. Let us then redeem the time, choosing wisely, making the most of every opportunity that is presented to us. July 2014 l 27
ABOUT WEIGHT
The latest weight loss news Whey to go! This protein source linked with weight loss n an analysis of multiple studies, researchers found that when whey protein was used to replace calories in the diet, study participants lost an average 9.2 pounds. They also found that when whey protein was taken in conjunction with resistance training, volunteers had an average increase of 4.9 pounds of lean body mass.

“There is a growing body of research that supports the benefits of whey protein for weight maintenance and lean body mass,” said the principal investigator Dominik Alexander, PhD, MSPH. “The results indicate that there is something unique about whey protein, compared to other protein sources and carbohydrates, when it comes to building lean body mass and maintaining or losing weight.” Snacking on the rise Do you find yourself reaching for snacks more than you used to? If so, you’re in good company: about 31% of consumers are snacking more than they did two years ago, according to a recent survey by Technomic, Inc. About 51% of people snack twice a day, up from 48% who said the same in 2012. What are people looking for in snacks? Although consumers are broadening their definition of a “snack,” 50% of them take healthfulness into consideration when selecting a snack. Another important factor: portability. A full 60% of consumers consider portability important or extremely important when it comes to snack foods.

Weight loss at any age may help the heart A recent study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology came to an unsurprising conclusion: the longer a person is overweight, the greater their chance of heart problems later in life. But researchers also discovered that when adults dropped a BMI category (obese to overweight or overweight to normal), they reduced that risk—even if the weight was gained back. “Our study is unique because it followed individuals for such a long time, more than 60 years, and allowed us to assess the effect of modest, real-life changes in adiposity (excess body fat). Our findings suggest that losing weight at any age can result in long-term cardiovascular health benefits, and support public health strategies and lifestyle modifications that help individuals who are overweight or obese to lose weight at all ages,” said lead author John Deanfield in a press release. an believing in a higher power turn young people away from abusing drugs and alcohol? Research over the years has concluded “Yes,” and a new study offers still more evidence.
Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. However, once they began to help other addicts and experience spiritual awakening, they were more likely to stay straight, sober and out of jail after their release.
After observing 195 juvenile criminal offenders over a two-month period following their release from jail, a pair of U.S. researchers found results similar to those of many other studies. They concluded that for young people who abuse alcohol and drugs, frequent involvement in spiritual activities seems to help in their treatment.
Many of the young people in the study were involved with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which emphasizes helping others and “God-consciousness” to help addicts reclaim their lives. The researchers quoted one young woman as saying, “I started to get better when I started to help out in Alcoholics Anonymous. When we help others, we get connected to a power greater than ourselves that can do for us what alcohol and drugs used to do.”
“Young people in our study of juvenile offenders seem to lack purpose and are overwhelmed by feelings of not fitting in,” said the research team, Byron Johnson of Baylor University in Waco, TX and Maria Pagano of Case

It seems that the nerve connections of addiction are “short-circuited” by spiritual experiences; in other words, the brain is being re-wired. RESEARCH DESK Stronger muscles linked to longer life
Los Angeles, CA
The more muscle older adults have, the lower their risk of death, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Medicine. Researchers analyzed data from more than 3,600 older adults who took part in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between the years 1988 and 1994. The participants included men 55 and older and women 65 and older. The study determined that people with the highest levels of muscle mass were significantly less likely to have died than those with the lowest levels of muscle mass. “This survey indicates that the greater your muscle mass, the lower your risk of death,” said study co-author Dr. Arun Karlamangla, an associate professor at University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. “Mature adults should be trying to maximize and maintain muscle mass.”1 ...................................................................
Vitamin D helps improve breast cancer survival rates San Diego, CA
Breast cancer patients with high levels of Vitamin D in their blood may be more likely to survive breast cancer than women who lack the nutrient. This finding comes from a new study published in Anticancer Research. Researchers analyzed over 4,400 breast cancer survivors over a lengthy period. They found that women with high levels of Vitamin D were twice as likely to survive their disease compared to women with low levels of the vitamin. Researchers suspect that Vitamin D helps increase communication among cells, switching on a protein that can help prevent aggressive cell division.2 ...................................................................
Marriage may be good for blood pressure
Cambridge, MA
Marriage may be good for your health, according to a new study published in The Journal of Hypertension. Researchers at Harvard Medical School observed 325 adults over a two-year period. The subjects, about half of whom were married, were asked to follow strict diets and wear devices that monitored their blood pressure throughout the day. People who were married—especially men— were much more likely to exhibit better blood pressure levels than those who were not married. The researchers suggest that marriage might provide a level of social support that leads people to better manage their health and stress levels.3 ................................................................... DON’T LET A B-12 DEFICIENCY DRAG YOU DOWN Long-term multivitamin use decreases cataract risk Rochester, MN Long-term multivitamin supplementation decreases the incidence of cataract or age-related macular degeneration, according to a randomized, doubleblind, placebo-controlled study. A total of 14,641 US male physicians over the age of 50 received a daily multivitamin or placebo. Over the next 11 years, people in the multivitamin group had fewer cataracts and less macular degeneration. Researchers said this data suggests that long-term multivitamin use significantly decreases the risk of cataracts.1

Added sugar in diet could harm health London, UK Eating added sugars, even at levels that are within recommended limits for humans, could be toxic, a new mouse study published in Nature Communications suggests. Researchers gave mice an amount of extra sugar in their diet that corresponded to the current recommendation for humans. When compared to a control group of mice that were not fed the added sugar, the first group of mice died sooner and produced fewer babies during their 32-week life spans. Researchers noted that added sugar could also cause harm to humans in the long run.2
