INTRODUCTION
THE JEWISH 411
Welcome! The 2021 Jewish 411 is Southern California’s annual business directory and your source for information about everything from the performing arts, kosher bakeries, synagogues, lifecycle resources and day schools. Covering Orange County, San Diego County, Palm Springs and surrounding desert areas, you’ll find color-coded sections to help you navigate to your region of choice. As usual, there are also feature articles representing each region and an advertiser’s index at the back of the book to help you flip quickly to the business of your choice. For stories and information about Jewish events, organizations and people all year round, subscribe to the San Diego Jewish Journal at sdjewishjournal.com, or Orange Country JLife at jlifeoc.com. We hope this booklet provides useful information throughout the year whether you get the 411 every year or this is your first time. “When the day comes that we have to give accounting for our deeds, we shall be summoned before the millions who were murdered in the Holocaust. They will want to know, ‘What have you done?’ Some will say they were merchants, others will describe buildings they have built, but I will have the privilege of saying to them ‘I have never forgotten you.’” -Simon Wiesenthal
Most of us were spared the hell he endured. But we were not spared the obligation to remember…and to act. Keep Simon Wiesenthal’s legacy alive. Merage JCC’s J Camps is Open and Ready for You! BY CHAR WILLIAMS-CAVITT
Everything seems like it is changing. In this era of the great quarantine, we shop, work, exercise and eat (hello carbs!) differently. It won’t be a surprise to you, that Camp has changed as well with rules and regulations governing every aspect of fun and care. In addition to taking temperatures and conducting health questionnaires each morning, we are making huge efforts to reduce the number of people campers cross paths with, like forgoing field trips. Cohort sizes are smaller and large group fun is practically non-existent. Separate space has been created for campers, including entrances, hallways, bathrooms and outside areas. All snacks and lunches are individually wrapped — no sharing or trading. What won’t look different? What we want you to know is that with all the differences, the best parts of Camp will look the same. Camp is a respite. Camp remains a beacon of memories, friends, independence and problem-solving. Dress-up days, water fun, sports, singing and dance, science, and more create daily opportunities to learn, adventure and share. 20

ORANGE COUNTY FEATURE
THE JEWISH 411
We continue to prioritize play. Play allows kids to create, innovate, brainstorm and to work outside of the structure, where they experiment and self-initiate, where deep social and emotional education takes place. Camp allows kids to unplug. Kids take a break from television and digital play and learn to engage in the real world. Unplugged play is critical; it allows kids to practice socialization skills. Moving is the name of the game. As quarantining has forced children to spend so much time inside, Camp provides wonderful opportunities to run, jump, swim and dance. The lifelong impact positive camp experiences have on our kids is immeasurable and Jewish-based camps are uniquely positioned to provide kids an opportunity to develop their Jewish identity in a peer community not otherwise available to them at other times during the year. Even in a Covid-19 crazy era, our kids emerge from camp with enthusiasm, higher self-esteem and a sense of belonging and inclusion. While it seems like much of our day-to-day experiences have shut down. The J is open and ready for fun!

A Rabbi’s Message for this Transition Year BY RABBI BEN LEINOW
I was born in Los Angeles in 1936. As a youth, I saw the natural beauty of the ocean, mountains and valleys in all of Southern California as my home town. The people in my home town were freedom lovers. We worked. We swam. We hiked. We ran, and we sat still to take in the aroma of nature. We lived to conquer the problems of nature and mankind. Between the cities there was a joyful closeness and exciting competition. This year’s edition of ‘411’ reflects the tragedy and recovery of Covid-19. We have lived through the unfortunate loss of life. We have experienced the isolation of keeping distance and the fear of the future. With caution, it may now be the time to once again enjoy the wonder of life and the beauty of nature. I believe that we are now in the midst of change which compares to the transportation dynamic of using machines instead of horses. An example of the present change is when millions of people were dying, our medical science in less than a year was able to come up with a vaccine which safely immunes us. The vaccine is saving millions of lives in the United States as well as around the world. I also find it amazing that our cellphones easily give us freedom to talk to friends, relatives and businesses around the world. The world of opportunity is reaching out to us. My challenge to you in this transition year of 2021-2022 is to enjoy the beauty of nature. Listen to the stories of your friends and acquaintances. Lovingly debate the ideas of one another and remember that we live in a wonderful natural world that challenges the mind and heart. Take advantage of every opportunity to make the world a better place. Something as simple as picking up an idle paper and tossing it. When you have the opportunity to add joy to the world of your family and friends, don’t hold back. Use your energy to find how much we have in common and how much we can do to help one another. Let love and friendship be your guide and know that we all become friends by connecting with one another. THE JEWISH 411 • 2021

Another Winning Palm Springs Jewish Film Festival BY PAM PRICE
The eighth annual Jewish Film Festival, supported by The Jewish Federation of the Desert and Temple Isaiah Jewish Community Center, was held Apr. 18-21 this year and featured eight films and eight shorts, pleasing passholders from start to finish. The event went virtual along with other Jewish film festivals worldwide. According to Doug Morton, the maestro behind the event, the films were diverse yet thought-provoking, with striking changes in the format thanks to Zoom. Palm Springs Life Magazine noted that while the Festival went virtual “it brought its audience together to interact with speakers and each other,” for example a fascinating Zoom chat moderated by Rabbi Steven Rosenberg with film director Dror Sahavi. Interviews with Festival supporters provided a platform for conversation and comment from viewers from the “The Tattooed Torah” 44

directed by Lisa Effress and narrated by Ed Asner to “Welcome to Kutsher’s,” about the last surviving Jewish resort in the Catskills. Enhancing this playbill were eight shorts including a documentary about Victor Reis, designer of the 10 Commandments in Hebrew hanging on the bema in the Liberman Sanctuary at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. Free events were scheduled Apr. 18-21, the first one a conversation with Neil Friedman, President of Menemsha Films (live from Santa Monica), followed by a discussion of his narrative on a ‘film festival during a pandemic’ and his new venture, ChaiFlicks, which he describes as exclusive streaming access to hundreds of Jewish and Israeli movies, television series and documentaries. From drama to comedy, Jewish-themed films were diverse. For example the documentary, “Sammy Davis Jr. I’ve Got to be Me” was chosen because, coincidently, the Jewish performer, a resident of Palm Springs, once lived across the street from Temple Isaiah. An animated short film, “The Tattooed Torah” based on the book authored by Marvell Ginsburg and now considered an educational resource for Holocaust education, reveals the story of the journey and rescue of a small but remarkable Torah from Brno, Czechoslavkia. Throughout the Festival were free events, from a conversation from Mexico City with Isaac Cherem, producer of “Leona” to a Conversation with Dror Zahavi, Director of “Crescendo,” live from Berlin. Co-sponsors of this year’s festival were Robert and Cheryl Fey, Feys Canyon Realtors were among many others who made this cherished event possible. THE JEWISH 411 • 2021

San Diego Jewish Community Covid-19 Emergency Fund: Big Community Effort, Big Community Impact STAFF WRITER
Since mid-March 2020, our Jewish community leaders have been in active crisis management mode as the global pandemic has impacted every aspect of Jewish life. Jewish Federation of San Diego County, Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego and Leichtag Foundation joined together to establish the San Diego Jewish Community Covid-19 Emergency Fund. The accelerating scale of Covid-19 called for a coordinated, streamlined response to support those who were most vulnerable and impacted in San Diego’s Jewish community. The Fund responded to immediate needs, understood emerging challenges and helped build a roadmap for the future. To date, hundreds of donors have come together to contribute a collective $3 million to support our Jewish community. Thousands of lives have been touched through the Fund, which helped organizations meet payroll and PPE needs, funded support for the individuals and their most basic needs, and helped Jewish organizations make necessary changes to stay open. Thank you to those that gave. Jewish tradition places great value on learning through taking action. At a time when we knew the pandemic would dramatically affect our community, but did not yet grasp the profound and long-lasting needs, your vision to invest in future solutions meant the Fund could respond immediately to support families and individuals seeking critical services. In the words of our Sages, a community is too heavy to carry alone. 66

San Diego Jewish Academy Marks Major Milestone in Unprecedented Sustainability Initiative BY JASON EDELSTEIN
San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA), a pluralistic community K-12 school with a thriving early childhood center, marked a major milestone in the school’s ambitious Sustainability Initiative (SI) celebrating the completion and activation of its 800 kW solar project, further placing the school on the road to electricity independence. “SDJA’s Sustainability Initiative highlights our school’s commitment and vision for environmental sustainability while continuing our focus on innovation and graduating community leaders,” said Zvi Weiss, Head of School at SDJA. “The initiative is a direct reflection of our Jewish value, bal tashchit, to protect the earth.” “Today’s celebration highlights the leadership, innovation and environmental stewardship undertaken by SDJA for the health of our kids and our community,” said Heidi Gantwerk, Board Chair at SDJA. “SDJA’s quest for electricity independence should serve as an inspiration for schools and communities throughout the country and the world.” 70

“ A key goal of our Sustainability Initiative includes the designation as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.” — MICHAEL ZIMERMAN
The project includes the installation of solar panels on most of the school’s building rooftops, as well as on newly constructed carports in its Upper School parking lot. Once a planned large energy storage (battery) system is installed on campus, SDJA will save approximately $400,000 annually by generating its own electricity. Additionally, the project design includes a roadmap to develop the SDJA campus into a micro-grid, whereby SDJA would become completely self-sufficient in meeting its energy requirements. While some college campuses have achieved this, SDJA is not aware of any independent school in the U.S. that has, placing SDJA at the forefront. “A key goal of our Sustainability Initiative includes the designation as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School,” adds Michael Zimerman, SDJA’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “This important designation will include environmental and sustainability educational programming, and we envision our students learning the technology and operating the controls of the eventual microgrid on our campus, creating an invaluable and unique experience we can offer our students.” SDJA’s Sustainability Initiative has included many innovative, historical and creative steps, including the creation of SDJA’s current home, the 56-acre Jaffe Campus, which provides the fundamental platform to develop the SI, and the September 2019 appointment of Zimerman as the schools CSO to liaise with school leadership, employees, suppliers, parents, students and the broader community to address sustainability. “As a community, San Diego Jewish Academy focuses on creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking — each of which are essential parts of this initiative,” adds Weiss. “We are proud of the progress we have made thus far and will continue to work with our students, parents and staff on the exciting journey to sustainability.” THE JEWISH 411 • 2021

No charitable gift has a greater impact on the lives of Israelis.
There are many ways to support Israel and its people, but none is more transformative than a gift to Magen David Adom, Israel’s paramedic and Red Cross service. Your gift to MDA isn’t just changing lives — it’s literally saving them — providing critical care and hospital transport for everyone from victims of heart attacks to casualties of rocket attacks. Save a life through a gift to Magen David Adom today. Support MDA by visiting AFMDA.org/give or calling 866.632.2763.
